The Manufacturing And Ballistic Testing Of Tri-Axial Quasi Three Dimensional Woven Composites Layered In Polyurea, Brandon Saint

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The protection of important infrastructure and vital resources of the United States is essential to the Nation's security. Attacks using the Nation's infrastructure as weapons of mass destruction could have a disturbing physical and psychological consequences. Work needs to be done to enhance the protection of the Nation's infrastructure to prevent, deter, or mitigate the effects of deliberate attacks by terrorist. Toxic inhalation hazard (TIH) chemicals such as chlorine gas and anhydrous ammonia are very dangerous hazardous materials. Rail transportation of TIH creates risk that exposes highly populated areas across the country to this threat. This study investigates the ballistic …

Processing Of Affective Faces Varying In Valence And Intensity In Shy Adults: An Event-Related Fmri Study, Erica Tatham, Louis A. Schmidt, Elliott A. Beaton, Jay Schulkin, Geoffrey B. Hall Jan 2013

Processing Of Affective Faces Varying In Valence And Intensity In Shy Adults: An Event-Related Fmri Study, Erica Tatham, Louis A. Schmidt, Elliott A. Beaton, Jay Schulkin, Geoffrey B. Hall

Psychology Faculty Publications

Recent behavioral and electrocortical studies have found that shy and socially anxious adults are hypersensitive to the processing of negative and ambiguous facial emotions. We attempted to extend these findings by examining the neural correlates of affective face processing in shy adults using an event-related fMRI design. We presented pairs of faces that varied in affective valence and intensity. The faces were morphed to alter the degree of intensity of the emotional expressive faces. Twenty-four (12 shy and 12 non-shy) young adult participants then made same/different judgments to these faces while in an MR scanner. We found that shy adults …

Home Sweet Home: An Infinite Grid Of Memory And Repressed Abuse Trauma, Melissa Bush Jan 2013

Home Sweet Home: An Infinite Grid Of Memory And Repressed Abuse Trauma, Melissa Bush

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Incorporating traditional craft mediums of crochet and embroidery, I use digital technology to experiment with wording to graphically represent my abuse trauma. Due to the severity of the subject matter and the work ethic I employ in my art practice, using my hands and being completely involved is a form of masochistic pleasure. My process takes on a Sisyphean approach of penance for the sins of others in my work. During my studio practice, my process reaches a meditative state where my mind is clear and free of the burden. Once I've completed a panel of trauma, the burden is …

Faculty and staff from the institution complete every aspect of Phase I with the freshmen. Phase II is class time that concentrates on development of critical thinking and writing skills.

Through surveys and interviews, participants in the Keystone Learning Community reported strong peer, faculty, and upperclassmen engagement initiated by …

An Exploration Of The Perceived Academic Self-Efficacy And Locus Of Control Of Urban Students With Learning Disabilities, Olukayode Abimbola Nuga Jan 2013

An Exploration Of The Perceived Academic Self-Efficacy And Locus Of Control Of Urban Students With Learning Disabilities, Olukayode Abimbola Nuga

Wayne State University Dissertations

The search for an answer to the question of the achievement gap between Black and other minority students and their White counterparts has been pervasive. This study, however, reframes the question not by using the White student as a frame of reference against which to make the comparison but by using the Black student himself. Therefore, relying on some scholarly work that found that studies of achievement within ethnic groups yielded far more significant results than between groups, the study focused on a comparison of the academic achievement between urban Black students with learning disabilities and their typical peers. The …

Social Support, Parent-Child Communication And Reactions To Pediatric Cancer Medical Procedures, Amy Marie Peterson Jan 2013

Social Support, Parent-Child Communication And Reactions To Pediatric Cancer Medical Procedures, Amy Marie Peterson

Wayne State University Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between social support, parent-child communication during pediatric cancer treatment-related medical procedures, and parent and child reactions to these procedures.

Cancer is the leading cause of disease-related death in children (ACS, 2012) and children and their parents both report that cancer-related medical procedures are worse than the disease itself (Hedstrom et al., 2003). Social support may serve as a buffer against parent and child negative responses to treatment.

One hundred and fifteen families were included in the analysis from two pediatric oncology treatment centers. Self-report questionnaire data and observational coding of …

Qualitative Reports Of Michigan Medical Marijuana, David Charles Peters Jan 2013

Qualitative Reports Of Michigan Medical Marijuana, David Charles Peters

Wayne State University Dissertations

After hundreds of years of use the medical properties of Marijuana have been marginalized in our society. Qualitative interview data was collected from medical marijuana patients and knowledgeable producers and activists in Michigan about their perceptions and observations on the medical use of marijuana. Patients consistently reported using marijuana to substitute or wean off prescription drugs. All patients and producers who were taking opiate narcotics claimed they reduced overall drug use, especially opiates, by using medical marijuana. Patients and caregivers also claimed medical marijuana was preferred over opiates, eased withdrawal from opiates, and in some cases was perceived as more …

Response To Intervention: Understanding School Counselors' Awareness, Involvement, And Experiences, Amanda Winburn

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this mixed methods study was to better clarify the role and experiences of school counselors within the Response to Intervention (RtI) model. This study explored school counselors' involvement with and understanding of the RtI model. An integrative approach of both quantitative and qualitative methods was used as part of this mixed method study. As part of the design, quantitative data collection was the priority method for the study, folloby qualitative data collection to continue to explore and expand upon the results from the quantitative section (Creswell, 2009). The quantitative data was obtained from the author originated Response …

Mathematical Tasks Without Words And Word Problems: Perceptions Of Reluctant Problem Solvers, Sydney Margaret Holbert Jan 2013

Mathematical Tasks Without Words And Word Problems: Perceptions Of Reluctant Problem Solvers, Sydney Margaret Holbert

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This qualitative research study used a multiple, holistic case study approach (Yin, 2009) to explore the perceptions of reluctant problem solvers related to mathematical tasks without words and word problems. Participants were given a choice of working a mathematical task without words or a word problem during four problem-solving sessions. Data were gathered from problem-solving sessions, in the form of session transcripts, written reflections, and interviews to determine how the reluctant problem solvers perceived the problems presented in each session. Participants' views of the problems before and after working were recorded and thick descriptions of the sessions including quotes from …

The Dilemma: Career Transition Of African American Male Football Players At Division I Institutions, Kellen Jamil Northcutt Jan 2013

The Dilemma: Career Transition Of African American Male Football Players At Division I Institutions, Kellen Jamil Northcutt

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to explore and understand perceptions of African American male football athletes at Division I institutions that also played professional football, regarding their collegiate experiences and transition from athletics to post-playing careers. The study examined issues of race and social interaction, academic preparation, economic status, leadership opportunities, and the transitions from collegiate and professional sports. The participants in this study consisted of six former NFL players who attended college and played collegiately at NCAA predominately white Division I institutions in the Southern Regional Education Board member states in the United States. Using qualitative …

Scaffold Perception, Compharmacophore Model Development, And Quantitative Structure-Affinity Relationships Of Sigma Site Ligands, David Enos Watson Jan 2013

Scaffold Perception, Compharmacophore Model Development, And Quantitative Structure-Affinity Relationships Of Sigma Site Ligands, David Enos Watson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Sigma receptors are endogenous proteins with potential utility in treating psychological disorders, ischemia, the psychological and convulsive effects of drugs of abuse, and as an imaging agent for cancerous tissues, among others. Drug design efforts targeting these receptors have been hindered by a lack of structural information of the receptors themselves. Traditional ligand-based approaches have succeeded in generating many compounds with high affinity, and quite a few with selectivity for σ-1 receptors. There are few selective ligands for use as pharmacological probes for the σ-2 receptor. Much effort has gone into exploring the structure activity relationships of ligands targeting these …

Laughing Matters, Matthew Moore Jan 2013

Laughing Matters, Matthew Moore

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis defends a weak version of the superiority theory of humor: the superiority theory explains some instances of humor better than the incongruity theory. This thesis features an overview of the philosophy of humor in ancient, modern, and contemporary philosophy; this section contains criticisms of the incongruity theory. Connections between the superiority theory and humor about death are explored. Parallels are then drawn between this type of humor and Aristotle's great-souled man. A new type of laughter, jubilant laughter, is subsequently identified as being similar to laughter classified under the superiority theory since both exhibit a triumphant quality. But …

Panpsychism And Mind-Dust, John Heath Hamilton Jan 2013

Panpsychism And Mind-Dust, John Heath Hamilton

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

It is only recently that panpsychism has emerged as a viable position in philosophy of mind and metaphysics. As such, the exploration and defense of it is not yet on par with some competing views. The current project is a step towards a remedy to this unfortunate state of affairs. It concerns one of the most important objections to the view, which I label the 'mind-dust' objection in homage to William James. It is essentially the conceptual difficulty of how proto-experiential being at the micro-level is supposed to 'sum' in a way that forms the consciousness with which we are …

Issue Publics Gone Wild Or The End Of Narrow Interests, Michael Calton Bowen Jan 2013

Issue Publics Gone Wild Or The End Of Narrow Interests, Michael Calton Bowen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Issue public theory holds that individuals are more likely to base political judgments, such as the decision of who to vote for on election day, on issues that are particularly important to them. This subset of issues is presumed to be relatively small in quantity for most individuals, allowing them to specialize in information gathering and attention. There is reason to believe the nature of issue publics has significantly changed in recent years as a result of profound shifts in the information environment. Many of the traditional findings within the literature are reassessed using data primarily from the 2008 Presidential …
