Evaluating The Discriminant Validity Of The Metaphors Test, Daniel N. Erosa Jan 2013

Evaluating The Discriminant Validity Of The Metaphors Test, Daniel N. Erosa

McNair Poster Presentations

The Metaphors Test (Barchard, Hensley, Anderson, & Walker, 2013) is a new test of emotion perception in which test takers indicate the extent to which various emotions are conveyed by metaphors. In order for the Metaphors Test to be considered a valid test of emotion perception, it must have discriminant validity. The Five-Factor Model (McCrae & John, 1992), also known as the Big Five Model, is one of the most well-known frameworks for personality. Based upon theory and previous research, the Metaphors Test should have low correlations with the Big Five. Conscientiousness had a moderate correlation with the Metaphors Test. …

Detecting Low Incidents Effects: The Value Of Mixed Methods Research Designs In Low-N Studies, Isadore Newman, Carolyn S. Ridenour, Carole Newman, Shannon Smith, Russell C. Brown

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

Many important educational situations such as traumatic brain injury among preschoolers, school gun violence, preadolescent eating disorders, and adolescent suicide happen relatively infrequently. In this article, the authors explain why mixed methods research designs offer more meaningful empirical results than do qualitative or quantitative designs alone when asking research questions about low incident situations. The authors present and explain three mixed methods models applicable to low incidents situations.

Keeping It Real: Intensive Instruction And The Future Of Russian Language And Culture In U.S. Universities, Thomas J. Garza Jan 2013

Keeping It Real: Intensive Instruction And The Future Of Russian Language And Culture In U.S. Universities, Thomas J. Garza

Russian Language Journal

Since the global economic downturn in 2008, few programs in languages other than English in the U.S. have managed to escape the chilling effect of shrinking budgets on academic institutions. With fewer financial resources available to support the educational missions of language departments, many programs nationally have either devolved into smaller, leaner academic units at best, or at worst, have been cancelled entirely. These dire economic times, coupled with a new incarnation of culture wars aimed at the very heart of the relevance and value of a liberal arts education, have compelled some university administrators and program directors to seek …

Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptors Containing Α6 Subunits Contribute To Alcohol Reward-Related Behaviors, Matthew S. Powers, H. J. Broderick, Ryan M. Drenan, Julia Chester Jan 2013

Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptors Containing Α6 Subunits Contribute To Alcohol Reward-Related Behaviors, Matthew S. Powers, H. J. Broderick, Ryan M. Drenan, Julia Chester

Department of Psychological Sciences Faculty Publications

Evidence is emerging that neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) in the mesolimbic dopamine (DA) system are involved in mediating the reinforcing effects of alcohol. Midbrain DA neurons express high levels of α6 subunit-containing nAChRs that modulate DA transmission, implicating their involvement in reward-related behaviors. The present study assessed the role of α6-containing nAChRs in modulating alcohol reward using transgenic mice expressing mutant, hypersensitive α6 nAChR subunits (α6L9′S mice). α6L9′S mice and littermate controls were tested in three well-established models of alcohol reward: 24-hr two-bottle choice drinking, drinking in the dark (DID), and conditioned place preference (CPP). Confocal microscopy and patch-clamp …

Two Methodologies: How Well Can Universities Predict Retention, Tiffany Lynette Gregory Jan 2013

Two Methodologies: How Well Can Universities Predict Retention, Tiffany Lynette Gregory

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Student retention has been a long standing focus in higher education research with one of the earliest work dating back to 1937. Many researchers have proposed factors that affect a student's decision to depart from the university without successfully completing a degree. It is important to not only research different attributes and characteristics that affect student departure but it is also important to study different statistical methodologies. With the advancement in technology, new methodologies such as the Classification and Regression Tree (CART) have proven to yield significant results in a variety of research fields. As these new statistical methodologies emerge, …

The Effect Of Instrument-Specific Rater Training On Interrater Reliability And Counseling Skills Performance Differentiation, Paul Douglas Meacham

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to explore the effect of instrument-specific rater training on interrater reliability (IRR) and counseling skills performance differentiation. Strong IRR is of primary concern to effective program evaluation (McCullough, Kuhn, Andrews, Valen, Hatch, & Osimo, 2003; Schanche, Nielsen, McCullough, Valen, & Mykletun, 2010) and counselor education (Baker, Daniels, & Greeley, 1990; Jennings, Goh, Skovholt, & Banerje-Steevens, 2003; Lepkowski, Packman, Smaby, & Maddux, 2009). The ability to differentiate between low and high performances of counseling skills is central to informing the classroom instruction of counseling students and the supervision of early clinical experiences (Byrne & Hartley, …

Multifunctional Furniture For Underprivileged Communities: A Milestone In Sustainable Development, Farah Nasser Jan 2013

Multifunctional Furniture For Underprivileged Communities: A Milestone In Sustainable Development, Farah Nasser

Department of Computer Graphics Technology Degree Theses

Overcrowded living space is a contributing factor to the social and economic problems in impoverished areas such as Jabal Al-Natheef refugee camp in Jordan. Addressing such a convoluted problem requires long-term planning and availability of resources. However, initiation of small projects to target pain points, employing technologies such as Building Information Modeling (BIM) to design solutions, and empowering the people to implement them could alleviate the impact of poverty. Giving the stakeholders the ability to build and reproduce the designed solutions will help communities grow by allowing individuals to provide for themselves. This will also create jobs and sets the …

Pilot Study Of A Kinect-Based Video Game To Improve Physical Therapy Treatment, Jacob Samuel Brown Jan 2013

Pilot Study Of A Kinect-Based Video Game To Improve Physical Therapy Treatment, Jacob Samuel Brown

Department of Computer Graphics Technology Degree Theses

Burnie is an exergame being developed at Purdue University and is used in this study. Burnie was developed using the Unity3D engine and OpenNI to interface with the Xbox Kinect. This study looked at how gesture intensity affected perceived enjoyment and perceived fatigue of the game. The results of the study could not reject the null hypothesis. Gesture intensity does not have a significant relationship to perceived enjoyment and perceived fatigue. This result means that future studies can alter the gesture intensity of the game Burnie without adversely affecting the player’s enjoyment and fatigue levels.
