A Profile Of Children With Complex Chronic Conditions At End Of Life Among Medicaid Beneficiaries: Implications For Health Care Reform, Lisa C. Lindley, Maureen E. Lyon
A Profile Of Children With Complex Chronic Conditions At End Of Life Among Medicaid Beneficiaries: Implications For Health Care Reform, Lisa C. Lindley, Maureen E. Lyon
Pediatrics Faculty Publications
Background: As the United States braces for full implementation of health care reform, the eyes of the nation are on Medicaid. The large number of newly eligible Medicaid beneficiaries may challenge health care resources and ultimately impact quality of care. This is a special concern among current Medicaid beneficiaries such as children with complex chronic conditions (CCCs) who have significant health care needs, especially at end of life (EOL). Yet, a comprehensive profile of these children is lacking.
Objective: To understand the demographic and health characteristics, health care utilization, and expenditures among Medicaid children with CCCs at EOL.
Methods: Our …

Crimes Against Children Research Center
This bulletin summarizes findings from the Internet‐Facilitated Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children (IF‐CSEC) component of the 2006 Second National Juvenile Online Victimization study. Following are some key findings from the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention‐sponsored study: • An estimated 569 arrests for IF‐CSEC were made in the United States in 2006; more than half of the arrests involved the offender marketing and selling child pornography. • Most offenders (83%) purchased child pornography or sex with a minor, but an important minority (17%) profited from the exploitation. Profiteers appeared to be more seasoned offenders who were involved in larger, …
Cooperative Struggle: Re-Framing Intercultural Conflict In The Management Of Sino-American Joint Ventures, Kathleen J. Krone, Sarah Steimel
Cooperative Struggle: Re-Framing Intercultural Conflict In The Management Of Sino-American Joint Ventures, Kathleen J. Krone, Sarah Steimel
Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications
Sino-American economic joint ventures are most often studied through a lens of technical rationality that typically emphasizes organizational efficiency, reduces culture to a manageable resource, and views conflict as discrete disruptions requiring efficient handling. Here, we conceptualize Sino-American business partnerships as sites of struggle where co-managers' accounts of intercultural disagreements reveal friction around action, voice, interests, and identity. We propose cooperative struggle as a critical management practice for working creatively with the multiple forms of difference that arise in this organizational form.

Global Health Faculty Publications
BACKGROUND: Wealth disparities in child developmental outcomes are well documented in developed countries. We sought to (1) describe the extent of wealth-based neurocognitive development disparities and (2) examine potential mediating factors of disparities among a population-based cohort of children in rural Nepal.
METHODS: We investigated household wealth-based differences in intellectual, executive and motor function of n = 1692 children aged between 7 and 9 years in Nepal. Using linear mixed models, wealth-based differences were estimated before and after controlling for child and household demographic characteristics. We further examined wealth-based differences adjusted for three sets of mediators: child nutritional status, home …

Can You Swim In Waves? Children's Swimming, Floating, And Entry Skills In Calm And Simulated Unsteady Water Conditions, Per-Ludvik Kjendlie, Tommy Pedersen, Trine Thoresen, Trond Setlo, Kevin Moran, Robert Keig Stallman
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
Little is known about the transfer of swimming skills from indoor, flat, calm conditions to outdoor, wavy, unsteady conditions. The aim of the current study was to examine the differences in swimming, floating and entry skills in children between calm and simulated open water conditions. Sixty-six children, 11 years of age, were tested on two occasions, once in calm water and once in simulated open water conditions. Testing consisted of a 200 m time trial, a 3 min back floating test, a diving entry, and a rolling entry. The results show an 8% decrement in performance on the 200 m …

A Monte Carlo Comparison Of Robust Manova Test Statistics, Holmes Finch, Brian French
A Monte Carlo Comparison Of Robust Manova Test Statistics, Holmes Finch, Brian French
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) is a popular statistical tool in the social sciences, allowing for the comparison of mean vectors across groups. MANOVA rests on three primary assumptions regarding the population: (a) multivariate normality, (b) equality of group population covariance matrices and (c) independence of errors. When these assumptions are violated, MANOVA does not perform well with respect to Type I error and power. There are several alternative test statistics that can be considered including robust statistics and the use of the structural equation modeling (SEM) framework. This simulation study focused on comparing the performance of the P test …
Distribution Of The Ratio Of Normal And Rice Random Variables, Nayereh B. Khoolenjani, Kavoos Khorshidian
Distribution Of The Ratio Of Normal And Rice Random Variables, Nayereh B. Khoolenjani, Kavoos Khorshidian
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
The ratio of independent random variables arises in many applied problems. The distribution of the ratio |X/Y| is studied when X and Y are independent Normal and Rice random variables, respectively. Ratios of such random variables have extensive applications in the analysis of noises in communication systems. The exact forms of probability density function (PDF), cumulative distribution function (CDF) and the existing moments are derived in terms of several special functions. As a special case, the PDF and CDF of the ratio of independent standard Normal and Rayleigh random variables have been obtained. Tabulations of associated percentage points …

Preliminary Testing For Normality: Is This A Good Practice?, H. J. Keselman, Abdul R. Othman, Rand R. Wilcox
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
Normality is a distributional requirement of classical test statistics. In order for the test statistic to provide valid results leading to sound and reliable conclusions this requirement must be satisfied. In the not too distant past, it was claimed that violations of normality would not likely jeopardize scientific findings (See Hsu & Feldt, 1969; Lunney, 1970). Recent revelations suggest otherwise (See e.g., Micceri, 1989; Keselman, Huberty, Lix et al., 1998; Erceg-Hurn, Wilcox, & Keselman, 2013; Wilcox and Keselman, 2003; Wilcox, 2012a, b). Unfortunately the data obtained in psychological investigations rarely, if ever, meet the requirement of normally distributed data (Micceri, …
The Impact Of Continuity Violation On Anova And Alternative Methods, Björn Lantz
The Impact Of Continuity Violation On Anova And Alternative Methods, Björn Lantz
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
The normality assumption behind ANOVA and other parametric methods implies that response variables are measured on continuous scales. A simulation approach is used to explore the impact of continuity violation on the performance of statistical methods commonly used by applied researchers to compare locations across several groups.

The Single-Case Data Analysis Package: Analysing Single-Case Experiments With R Software, Isis Bulté, Patrick Onghena
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
The RcmdrPlugin.SCDA plug-in package is discussed. It integrates three R packages in the R commander interface: SCVA (for Single-Case Visual Analysis), SCRT (for Single-Case Randomization Tests), and SCMA (for Single-Case Meta-Analysis). This way the plug-in package covers three important steps in the analysis of single-case data.

Robust Regression Estimators When There Are Tied Values, Rand R. Wilcox, Florence Clark
Robust Regression Estimators When There Are Tied Values, Rand R. Wilcox, Florence Clark
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
It is well known that when using the ordinary least squares regression estimator, outliers among the dependent variable can result in relatively poor power. Many robust regression estimators have been derived that address this problem, but the bulk of the results assume that the dependent variable is continuous. It is demonstrated that when there are tied values, several robust regression estimators can perform poorly in terms of controlling the Type I error probability, even with a large sample size. The presence of tied values does not necessarily mean that they perform poorly, but there is the issue of whether there …
Testing The Assumption Of Non-Differential Misclassification In Case-Control Studies, Tze-San Lee, Qin Hui
Testing The Assumption Of Non-Differential Misclassification In Case-Control Studies, Tze-San Lee, Qin Hui
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
One of the not yet solved issues regarding the misclassification in case-control studies is whether the misclassification rates are the same for both cases and controls. Currently, a common practice is to assume that the rates are the same, that is, the non-differential misclassification assumption. However, it has been suspected that this assumption may not be valid in practical applications. Unfortunately, no test is available so far to test the validity of the non-differential misclassification assumption. A method is presented to test the validity of non-differential misclassification assumption in case-control studies with 2 × 2 tables when validation data are …

Evaluation Model Construction And Simulation Research On Tourist Diversion Strategy In Ecotourism Scenery Sport, Shaojiang Lin, Yuguo Yuan, Weimin Zheng, Peiyu Ren, Maozhu Jin
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
Due to unbalanced distribution of tourists during peak time, tourists are likely to highly flock in certain areas of scenery spots if imperfect organization and management. For this reason, there may be crowds or even trample accidents in addition to unrecoverable damages for the ecological environment in such areas. Therefore, the valid solution is to formulate scientific tourist diversion strategy, reasonably adjust the tour routes, and realize the balanced distribution of tourists over space and time. The prerequisite and base of the research is to establish scientific rational evaluation indicators for diversion strategy. At present, the common indicators include the …

Transitional Justice: Prioritizing Truth Commissions Or International Tribunals To Ensure Healing And Reconciliation, Jlateh Vincent Jappah, Danielle Taana Smith
Journal of International and Global Studies
There is a recent increased examination of the effects of international funding for truth commissions and criminal tribunals in post-conflict societies as they transition to peace. The discourse on whether to prioritize truth commissions or international criminal tribunals and which form of transitional justice more effectively fosters healing and reconciliation continues to be highly polemical. This paper explores whether, in terms of post-conflict healing and reconciliation, international funding would be better spent on truth commissions than on international criminal tribunals or vice versa. It examines the complexities and heterogeneity of transitional societies and suggests that international funding for transitional justice …
Transnational Policy Networks In Global Water Governance In India, Vandana Asthana Ph.D.
Transnational Policy Networks In Global Water Governance In India, Vandana Asthana Ph.D.
Journal of International and Global Studies
This paper argues that in the processes of global water governance, transnational policy networks play a significant role in defining spaces of engagement that privilege certain voices and versions. These networks produce narratives that not only convey storylines of sustainable water practices but also often have embedded within them the advocacy of a particular policy instrument that they intend to promote. What appears as knowledge is often structured towards the goal at which it is directed. Using application of private sector participation in water as an example from India, the paper explores how these power/knowledge regimes are established and supported …

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is characterized by a persistent pattern of inattention and impulsivity/hyperactivity and is estimated to affect 3% to 7% of the school population (American Psychiatric Association, 2000). In the majority of cases the disorder persists into adolescence and adulthood (Barkley, Murphy, & Fischer, 2008; Simon, Czobor, Bálint, Mészáros & Bitter, 2009). Although many studies have reported on the relationship between ADHD and younger children, there are fewer studies examining this with older participants. Recent research indicates that increasing numbers of high school students with ADHD are pursuing college (Wolf, Simkowitz, & Carlson, 2009). While the exact rates of …
