A Descriptive Exploratory Study Of The Experience Of Gay Partners Of Hiv-Positive Men, Jon Christensen Phd, Msn, Rn

Dissertations

HIV disease/AIDS has been the focus of much research since its introduction in 1981 and continues to have profound implications for those living with the disease and for those who are in close social relationships with them. One group that has received minimal attention in the HIV/AIDS literature is gay partners of HIV infected men. The aim of this study was to explore and describe the experiences of gay men living with a life partner who has HIV disease/AIDS who were not primary caregivers. A qualitative study using an interpretive descriptive approach was employed to study the experiences of ten …

A Study Of Household Finance In China, Zhen Huang Nov 2013

A Study Of Household Finance In China, Zhen Huang

Lingnan Theses

The emerging field of household finance, which studies the welfare benefits of financial markets for households and how effectively households use this market, is of significant importance for both academics and policy makers. However, studies in this new field remain scarce. Using data from a national representative survey that is unique for its combination of abundant household characteristics and heterogeneous individual preferences, attitudes and believes, and for its inclusion of investment behaviour and performances, this thesis pioneers a positive household finance study in developing countries by systematically investigating Chinese householders’ investments in the stock market. Moreover, this is the first …

Analysis And Construction Of Engaging Facial Forms And Expressions: Interdisciplinary Approaches From Art, Anatomy, Engineering, Cultural Studies, And Psychology, Leejin Kim Nov 2013

Analysis And Construction Of Engaging Facial Forms And Expressions: Interdisciplinary Approaches From Art, Anatomy, Engineering, Cultural Studies, And Psychology, Leejin Kim

Theses and Dissertations

The topic of this dissertation is the anatomical, psychological, and cultural examination of a human face in order to effectively construct an anatomy-driven 3D virtual face customization and action model. In order to gain a broad perspective of all aspects of a face, theories and methodology from the fields of art, engineering, anatomy, psychology, and cultural studies have been analyzed and implemented. The computer generated facial customization and action model were designed based on the collected data. Using this customization system, culturally-specific attractive face in Korean popular culture, “kot-mi-nam (flower-like beautiful guy),” was modeled and analyzed as a case study. …

Genetic Basis Of Neurocognitive Decline And Reduced White-Matter Integrity In Normal Human Brain Aging, David C. Glahn, Jack W. Kent, Vincent P. Diego, Anderson M. Winkler, Joanne E. Curran, Harald Hh Goring, Thomas D. Dyer, Laura Almasy, Ravi Duggirala, John Blangero Nov 2013

Genetic Basis Of Neurocognitive Decline And Reduced White-Matter Integrity In Normal Human Brain Aging, David C. Glahn, Jack W. Kent, Vincent P. Diego, Anderson M. Winkler, Joanne E. Curran, Harald Hh Goring, Thomas D. Dyer, Laura Almasy, Ravi Duggirala, John Blangero

School of Medicine Publications

Identification of genes associated with brain aging should markedly improve our understanding of the biological processes that govern normal age-related decline. However, challenges to identifying genes that facilitate successful brain aging are considerable, including a lack of established phenotypes and difficulties in modeling the effects of aging per se, rather than genes that influence the underlying trait. In a large cohort of randomly selected pedigrees (n = 1,129 subjects), we documented profound aging effects from young adulthood to old age (18-83 y) on neurocognitive ability and diffusion-based white-matter measures. Despite significant phenotypic correlation between white-matter integrity and tests of processing …

The Perceptions Of Students Toward Online Learning At A Midwestern University: What Are Students Telling Us And What Are We Doing About It?, John A. Huss, Shannon Eastep Nov 2013

The Perceptions Of Students Toward Online Learning At A Midwestern University: What Are Students Telling Us And What Are We Doing About It?, John A. Huss, Shannon Eastep

i.e.: inquiry in education

This action research explored attitudes and perceptions of students at a Midwestern university enrolled in at least one fully online course during fall 2012. Our objective was to initiate a study that gathered comprehensive information about the diversity of the online phenomenon at our university so that we could seek improvement as online designers and professors and subsequently share our findings with other instructors on campus who teach students within the targeted population. The study focused on student perspectives toward web-based instruction and student expectations and experiences in the areas of course format; technological support; interaction with faculty and peers; …

(Re)Discovering Retrospective Miscue Analysis: An Action Research Exploration Using Recorded Readings To Improve Third-Grade Students’ Reading Fluency, Melissa Born, Reagan Curtis Nov 2013

(Re)Discovering Retrospective Miscue Analysis: An Action Research Exploration Using Recorded Readings To Improve Third-Grade Students’ Reading Fluency, Melissa Born, Reagan Curtis

i.e.: inquiry in education

An action research project was undertaken focused on integrating recorded readings and Retrospective Miscue Analysis (RMA) into center-based instructional time in a third-grade classroom. Initial DIBELS test results were used to select 6 struggling readers, all of whom showed improved fluency in response to our instructional interventions. The impact of these instructional approaches on the teacher and her students is discussed, as is the impact on the teacher of engaging in action research. The article concludes with practical ways to implement recorded readings and RMA into classrooms in order to boost student motivation, attitudes toward reading, reading fluency, and comprehension.

The Scholarship Of Teaching And Learning Within Action Research: Promise And Possibilities, Thomas G. Ryan Nov 2013

The Scholarship Of Teaching And Learning Within Action Research: Promise And Possibilities, Thomas G. Ryan

i.e.: inquiry in education

Herein the idea that Action Research (A.R.) and the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SOTL) are very much related is explored. For instance, educational action research demands a series of commitments; it is a journey of self, through reflective inquiry, that is social. We do it to improve our teaching and self. We desire to improve praxes (practices) and understanding within the contexts in which these understandings are implemented. The action can be described as a quest to improve just as the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SOTL) can be viewed as a systematic, even recursive effort to illuminate, improve …

“I Don’T See Myself As A Medical Assistant Anymore”: Learning To Become A Health Coach, In Our Own Voices, Rachel Willard-Grace, Adriana Najmabadi, Christina Araujo, Dalia Canizalez, Denise Devore, Camille Prado, Amireh Ghorob, Thomas Bodenheimer Nov 2013

“I Don’T See Myself As A Medical Assistant Anymore”: Learning To Become A Health Coach, In Our Own Voices, Rachel Willard-Grace, Adriana Najmabadi, Christina Araujo, Dalia Canizalez, Denise Devore, Camille Prado, Amireh Ghorob, Thomas Bodenheimer

i.e.: inquiry in education

Health coaching may improve the health of patients with chronic conditions, and the model is growing in popularity. However, little is known about the experience of becoming a Health Coach. We explored our experiences as medical assistants moving into new roles as health coaches, a trainer of health coaches, and their supporting team. A focus group was conducted in November 2012 with three health coaches and one health coach trainer. Using participatory methods, our whole team, including the health coaches, took part in data analysis. We found that learning to become a Health Coach required embracing a radically new role …

Facilitating Executive Learning: Development And Application Of A Conceptual Model, Anthony J. Mento, Raymond M. Jones Nov 2013

Facilitating Executive Learning: Development And Application Of A Conceptual Model, Anthony J. Mento, Raymond M. Jones

Journal of Executive Education

We developed our required ten-week Executive MBA Leading Organizational Change course to specifically maximize meaningful learning according to the stipulations of Ausubel’s (1968) cognitive assimilation theory. The centerpiece of our work is the implementation of an eight-step explicit conceptually transparent learning model whose components are internally consistent and require the assimilation of new concepts and propositions into existing conceptual frameworks held by the learner. Concept maps (Novak, 1998), which are presented, help explicate our model, and generalizations to other learning milieus are addressed. While we address specific strengths and weaknesses with our approach, we conclude that we have met Ausubel’s …

Brain-Compatible Study Strategies, Lori Desautels Nov 2013

Brain-Compatible Study Strategies, Lori Desautels

Scholarship and Professional Work – Education

Driving my 15-year-old daughter home from cross country, I asked her where she learned to study. She replied, "Mom, I have never been taught how to study, we just do it because teachers have way too much to teach! They assume we know, and Cornell Notes are their idea of teaching us how to study!" I thought about this conversation and began to create a template that can hopefully assist students to organize, plan and create capacity in their working memories to learn content for the long term.

Below is a brief, simply-stated template on study skills for fifth grade …

The Impacts Of Urban Renewal: The Residents' Experiences In Qianmen, Beijing, China, Yongxia Kou Nov 2013

The Impacts Of Urban Renewal: The Residents' Experiences In Qianmen, Beijing, China, Yongxia Kou

Dissertations and Theses

The study examines the influences of the Qianmen urban renewal project on its original residents, which is one of a few demonstration projects under the new policy orientation of urban renewal practices in Beijing, China, entering the new century. It employs "residential satisfaction" as an evaluative indicator to understand the residents' experiences before and after urban renewal. Seventy-two residents were interviewed. Among them, 25 remained in Qianmen; 20 relocated to Hongshan, a neighborhood in the central city area; 21 moved to Longyue, a neighborhood in one of the suburban areas; and 6 residents relocated to other locations.

The study found …

A Discussion Of Ethics In Relation To Business And Non-Business Students, Casey Mejeur Nov 2013

A Discussion Of Ethics In Relation To Business And Non-Business Students, Casey Mejeur

Honors Theses

In recent years, society has seen a major shift when it comes to the importance of ethical behavior, and also in what constitutes ethical behavior. One of the biggest reasons for this shift is because of scandals in the last couple of decades (ex. Enron). As the public loses trust in upper management because of these scandals, a greater emphasis is placed on the importance of ethics. This paper discusses ethics in relation to business majors and how their behaviors carry over into the workforce.

The thesis begins by determining different sources of ethical behavior, and what may drive people …

"Do Not Disturb": A Micro-Macro Examination Of Intrusions At Work, Bing Chun Lin Nov 2013

"Do Not Disturb": A Micro-Macro Examination Of Intrusions At Work, Bing Chun Lin

Dissertations and Theses

Intrusions, or interruptions by others, are a common phenomenon in the modern workplace (Grove, 1983; Jett & George, 2003), particularly in the computing and information-technology (CIT) industry, as cross-specialty, and cross-team collaborations become more common (Beck et al., 2001). The present study examines the relationship between day-to-day intrusions (measured Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday) and strain reactions and perceived job performance over the week (measured on Thursday) among 150 CIT employees. Using a number of resource-based theories (i.e., Conservation of Resources, Ego Depletion Model, Cognitive Fatigue Model), I hypothesize that participants experiencing more frequent intrusions on a day-to-day basis will experience …

Time Spent With Children And Working Parents’ Willingness To Medicate Adhd-Like Behaviors, Bora Pajo, David Cohen Nov 2013

Time Spent With Children And Working Parents’ Willingness To Medicate Adhd-Like Behaviors, Bora Pajo, David Cohen

All Faculty and Staff Scholarship

How much time parents spend with their children is likely to influence their judgments of children’s behaviors and the behaviors themselves. In the diagnosis of children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), parents are key informants and decide whether their children should receive medication. This exploratory study investigates the relationship between working parents’ willingness to medicate ADHD-like behaviors and the time they can spend with their children during a regular workday. The participants (409 parents of 5- to 17- year-old children reporting having no child with emotional or behavioral problems and 87 reporting having such a child) were drawn from a population-based …
