Student Works (2010-2019)

Functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) for the removal of mercury ion from aqueous solution were studied. This project had two parts, first part was the functionalization of MWCNTs using different method. Second, the performance study of the removal mercury ion using functionalized MWCNTs. Functionalization of MWCNTs was carried out using two separate methods. The first method was a gas phase treatment in a Universal Temperature Program (UTP) reactor by flowing H2SO4/SO3 vapour onto the MWCNTs. The second method was a liquid phase treatment which includes refluxing the MWCNTs in H2SO4. All samples were heated at different temperatures (100, 200, 300 …

Study Of Laser Interactions With Quantum Particles / Tan Kai Shuen, Kai Shuen Tan

Student Works (2010-2019)

In this research, we consider the interaction between an atomic or molecular quantum system (QS) and a metallic nanoparticle (MP). We modelled QS by a three-level lambda system. Under the probe field and control field, the QS become transparent to incident light within a narrow spectrum of frequency, a phenomena known as electro- magnetically induced transparency (EIT). The quantum coherence of the QS under EIT and the strong exciton-plasmon coupling between the QS and MP are dependant on each other. The analytical expressions for the interaction of QS and MP are derived using two methods. First, the QS-MP system is …

Surface Polariton With Arbitrary Dielectric And Magnetic Materials / Low Ka Chun, Ka Chun Low Jan 2013

Surface Polariton With Arbitrary Dielectric And Magnetic Materials / Low Ka Chun, Ka Chun Low

Student Works (2010-2019)

Surface Polariton dispersion is demonstrated in the interface of two mediums and thin slab. Starting from 4 Maxwell equations, dispersion equations for s-polarization and p-polarisation are derived. Solutions of the tangential dispersion relation and normal dispersion relation for s-polarization is completely symmetrical to that of the p-polarization, due to the symmetry between the electric and magnetic responses in the Maxwell equations. If the materials are both dielectric and magnetic, mi ; ei 6=1, the s-polarized light can also excite the propagating surface modes, not just the p-polarized light. Analysis reveals additional new regimes of surface polariton resonances with magnetic materials …

Student Works (2010-2019)

The interaction between β-cyclodextrin and ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([Bmim][BF4]) had been studied. The inclusion complexation interaction was confirmed by FT-IR spectra. The inclusion complex was also characterized by 1H NMR, TGA and DSC. The results showed that the host-guest system presented a channel type structure and each glucose unit of β-cyclodextrin was in similar environment. The decomposition temperature of inclusion complex was lower than that of [bmim][BF4] and β- cyclodextrin individually. The ratio of 1:1 inclusion complex was determined in this study.

Quorum Sensing And Quorum Quenching Abilities Of Selected Bacteria Isolated From Antarctic / See-Too Wah Seng, Wah Seng See-Too

Student Works (2010-2019)

Quorum sensing (QS) is a phenomenon which refers to bacterial cell-to-cell communication in a population manner. QS regulates diverse activities in bacteria. Bacteria that possess QS activity communicate through secreted signal molecules or autoinducer. The Gram-negative bacteria and archaeon use acyl homoserine lactones (AHLs) as a QS signal to achieve regulation through the luxI-luxR homolog system, wheareas Gram-positive bacteria use small peptides as autoinducers. Some of the Proteobacteria use quinolone compound as signaling molecules. Quorum quenching (QQ) on the other hand refers to interference of QS that inactivates the signaling molecules. Even though QS and QQ were extensively studied in …

Entanglement of quantum is a quantum phenomenon which cannot be described using classical physics. This study reviews the quantum entanglement which discusses the various methods which are used to detect the entanglement. The properties of entanglement in the quantum system have been determined through the theoretical analysis of the quantities of nonclassical measure. That leads to the estimation of quantum entanglement with different parameters conditions. The study of the features and the nature of quantum entanglement enhance our understanding of the nature of entanglement processes. Furthermore, the entanglement is useful in the field of information processing where the entanglement is …

Student Works (2010-2019)

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are endogenous 18-25nt RNAs that regulate genes at the protein translation level. They can act as tumor suppressors or oncogene and are often dysregulated in various cancers. ANXA7 is a tumor suppressor gene that encodes for a Ca2+-dependent membrane-binding protein and its expression was found to be reduced or lost in advanced androgen-independent prostate cancers. This research aims to identify miRNAs that are regulated by the ANXA7 tumor suppressor gene and the putative pathways involved in prostate cancer. The overexpression of wild-type ANXA7 was achieved by using a mammalian expression vector harboring the gene. From our miRNA microarray …
