This chapter from The Cult of Individualism: A History of an Enduring American Myth describes the evolution of the culture that, today, is known as that of the Trump supporter, the red-state American culture descended from that of the Scots-Irish Borderers who came to the British colonies, primarily from Ulster Plantation, in the 18th century.
Unhinged: Kairos And The Invention Of The Untimely, Robert Leston
Unhinged: Kairos And The Invention Of The Untimely, Robert Leston
Publications and Research
Traditionally, kairos has been seen as a “timely” concept, and so invention is said to emerge from the timeliness of a cultural and historical situation. But what if invention was thought of as the potential to shift historical courses through the injection of something new or alien into a situation? This essay argues that kairos has not been able to free itself from its historical constraints because it has been bound to a human sense of temporality. By evolving along patterns different from print, the apparatus of the cinema developed in a way where it was not bound to illustrating …

Determinants Of Neighborhood Exposure To Extreme Heat: A Spatial Examination Of El Paso And Juárez, 2010, Faraj Mohamad Aboargob
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Numerous studies have been conducted on the modification of local weather by the urban environment. In studying urban environmental effects on the urban heat island (UHI), researchers have investigated influences such as land use, vegetation density, topography, population density, and neighborhood socioeconomic status. Many studies have used data collected from field observations, while other studies relied solely on computer modeling. This Dissertation research used a spatial analysis approach, which has been less widely employed, to investigate neighborhood level biophysical, built environmental and socio-demographic determinants of the El Paso and Juárez UHI. The research utilized inexpensive data obtained from US and …

Interaction Of Ceo2 And Zno Nanoparticles Towards The Symbiotic Association Of Alfalfa (Medicago Sativa) And Sinorhizobium Meliloti In Soil, Susmita Bandyopadhyay
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The production of engineered nanoparticles (ENPs) has rapidly increased due to their wide range of applications in the field of electronics, medicine, chemistry and biology. Consequently, concerns have risen about the environmental release and potential negative impact of NPs. A few reports have described the effects of TiO2 NPs and quantum dots upon nitrogen fixing bacteria. However, the understanding of the interaction of NPs in plant-microbe interface (symbiotic association), like alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.)-Sinorhizobium meliloti, is still in its infancy. Alfalfa is the world's most important forage crop. It grows in association with S. meliloti, which is very important in …

BACKGROUND AND SIGNIFICANCE: Historically, there has been a transnational migration flow from Mexico to the United States. There are many reasons for which people make the decision to migrate; the most common ones are unemployment and economic hardship. Currently, Oaxaca is considered one of the states with the highest poverty levels in Mexico. As a result of extreme poverty groups of indigenous people, such as Zapotec and Mixtec, are forced to migrate out of their communities in order to find jobs. Migration has been associated with various health outcomes, including diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease as well as …

Preparation Of Cobalt/Nickel Molybdenum Sulfide Catalysts Supported By Aqueous Media Soluble Multi-Wall Carbon Nanotubes., Hassan Ahmad Bleibel
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) have been subjected to chemical treatment in order to introduce hydrophilic functional groups on their surfaces. These covalently bonded groups did enhance the solubility of MWCNTs in aqueous media as expected. Functionalized MWCNTs were characterized using FTIR, Raman spectroscopy, TGA, X-ray diffraction, dispersion test and TEM. Then, functionalized MWCNTs were incorporated in the hydrothermal synthesis method of transition metal sulfide catalysts (CoMo, NiMo, and Ethylenediamine-CoMo Sulfides). Catalysts were characterized using X-ray diffraction, TEM, SEM, N2 Gas adsorption-desorption, elemental analysis, and Hydrodesulfurization (HDS) reaction of dibenzothiophene (DBT). The objective was to study the functionalized MWCNTs' effect; being …

Routes Of Compromise: Road Building And Motor Transportation In Modern Mexico, 1920-1952, Michael K. Bess
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
"Routes of Compromise" studies the creation and function of the government bureaucracy that built motor roads and highways, and the everyday impact of those roadways on public life in Mexico. It covers roughly thirty years of construction efforts from 1920 to the early 1950s as foreign and domestic actors, working at the transnational, national, state, and local levels, established a series of policy and investment programs that became the primary model for infrastructure development in Mexico during the mid-twentieth century. Road building offers a unique perspective to the study of Mexican state formation, underscoring how the national government sought to …

Expression And Characterization Of The Major Capsid Protein (Mcp) Of A Giant Marine Virus: Cafeteria Roenbergensis Virus, Sayan Chakraborty
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The oceans play significant roles in maintaining the climate on Earth and providing nutrients to the whole biosphere. Oceanic microbes produce approximately half of the Earth's oxygen. It has been shown that the populations of microbial communities in oceans are largely regulated by viral infection and thus affect the marine ecosystem. Cafeteria roenbergensis Virus (CroV) is a giant marine virus with a linear, double stranded, and AT-rich DNA genome. The genome of CroV has a size of 744kb and encodes for 544 predicted genes. CroV derived its name from its host, a unicellular marine zooplankton Cafeteria roenbergensis (Cro) that is …

Seismic Reflection Exploration Of Geothermal Reservoir Atnaval Air Station (Nas) Fallon, Nevada, Alay Ghebremariam Gebregiorgis
Seismic Reflection Exploration Of Geothermal Reservoir Atnaval Air Station (Nas) Fallon, Nevada, Alay Ghebremariam Gebregiorgis
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The Primary objective of this study is to increase geologic and tectonic understanding of the geothermal resources at the Naval Air Station (NAS) Fallon, Nevada. The seismic reflection method is employed to study faults, fractures and other tectonic structures in the subsurface in order to identify geothermal drill targets. The efficiency of geothermal systems is strongly dependent on water circulation. Discrete faults may be permeable and provide pathways for water flow depending on the fracture density. It is therefore desirable to detect and map faults and fracture zones and characterize their physical properties when evaluating a geothermal prospect.
The seismic …

Despite their often dangerous and unpredictable nature, landslides provide fascinating templates for studying how soil organisms, plants, and animals respond to such destruction. The emerging field oflandslide ecology helps us to understand these responses, aiding slope stabilization and restoration and contributing to progress made in geological approaches to landslide prediction and mitigation.
Summarizing the growing body ofliterature on the ecological consequences of landslides, this book provides a framework for the promotion of ecological tools in predicting, stabilizing, and restoring biodiversity to landslide scars at both local and landscape scales. It explores nutrient cycling; soil development; and how organisms disperse, colonize, …
Chapter 5 Biotic Interactions And Temporal Patterns Forlandslide Ecology, Lawrence R. Walker, Aaron B. Shiels
Chapter 5 Biotic Interactions And Temporal Patterns Forlandslide Ecology, Lawrence R. Walker, Aaron B. Shiels
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
1. Landslide succession is the sequential replacement of plant communities following landslide creation. It is affected by biotic interactions and abiotic conditions and occurs in the intervals between recurrent erosion events.
2. Plant species can facilitate or inhibit landslide succession by direct species interactions or indirectly by the alteration of resources including light levels, soil stability, soil moisture, or soil nutrients. Species replacements may also occur due to differences in the life histories of landslide colonizers.
3. Herbivores, pathogens, and non-native species influence landslide succession and contribute to the variety of successional trajectories found on landslides, potentially with long-term consequences. …
Chapter 2 Spatial Patterns For Landslide Ecology, Lawrence R. Walker, Aaron B. Shiels
Chapter 2 Spatial Patterns For Landslide Ecology, Lawrence R. Walker, Aaron B. Shiels
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
1. Remote sensing tools have greatly improved the mapping of both terrestrial and submarine landslides, particularly at global scales. At regional and local scales, environmental correlates are being found that help interpret spatial patterns and related ecological processes on landslides.
2. Landslides are frequent on only 4% of the terrestrial landscape and coverage varies over time because new landslides do not occur at a constant rate.
3. Multiple landslides triggered by the same event, such as an earthquake or severe rainstorm, can vary in physical characteristics. This variety contributes to a mosaic of landslide conditions across the landscape.
4. A …
