A System Of Transnational Business Interactions: The Case Of The Living Wage, David J. Doorey
A System Of Transnational Business Interactions: The Case Of The Living Wage, David J. Doorey
Comparative Research in Law & Political Economy
The subject of transnational business governance (TBG) interactions is an emerging field of study. These interactions are complex, involving multiple public and private actors crossing vast geopolitical spaces, with sometimes shared, but often conflicting interests. This complexity makes TBG interactions both an exciting new field of inquiry for scholars, but also an extremely challenging one. In these early days of theory development, it is useful to engage in a mapping exercise that will help scholars identify and test the relationships between the many inputs and outputs of TBG interactions. This paper contributes to this exercise by proposing and developing a …

Functional Analysis And Operations Review Of The Oregon Department Of Education, Masami Nishishiba, Shannon Grzybowski, Andrew Dzeguze
Center for Public Service Publications and Reports
In November 2012, the Oregon Department of Education (ODE) entered into an Intergovernmental Agreement with Portland State University’s (PSU) Center for Public Service (CPS). This agreement outlines the scope of work for CPS to perform a Functional Analysis and Operations Review of ODE. The Scope of Work includes:
1. Conduct interviews with key ODE personnel, Oregon Department of Justice (DOJ) legal advisors, Oregon Department of Administrative Services (DAS) staff, and education community key stakeholders. Interviews will be used to determine the extent to which existing ODE personnel have the understanding and tools needed to effectively perform their jobs consistent with …
Cornerstones, Curb Cuts, And Legal Education Reform , Judith Welch Wegner
Cornerstones, Curb Cuts, And Legal Education Reform , Judith Welch Wegner
Journal of Dispute Resolution
This essay seeks to contribute to this dialogue by offering both theoretical and practical observations about legal education reform. This approach reflects the judgment that current efforts to improve legal education will only get so far unless underlying impediments to change that are often invisible become better understood. The essay provides legal educators with theoretical insights from the design, organizational behavior, education, and psychology literature in order to help that process along. Theoretical insights can be hard to apply in the abstract, however. The essay therefore also offers practical recommendations about both small and large actions that might be taken …

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios
The increase of international economic collaboration as a result of globalization has an impact on various aspects of society at the regional level. To improve the effectiveness of such collaboration, the government of numerous countries begins to focus on internationalizing the education system as an approach to increase the level of global competence among the local population. Nevertheless, the results of integrating the international elements in each county are often varied whereby some countries are able to conform to the international policies according to the standards set by global agencies while others distort the international policies to conform to the …

It's Not To Be Discussed: Safety, Acceptance, And Professional Development For Lgbtq Faculty At A Large Southeastern University, Jessie Barnett, Jessica Legge Muilenburg, Corey W. Johnson, Jennifer Miracle
Journal of Higher Education & Student Affairs
Studies show that a discriminatory, unsafe university environment negatively impacts educators identifying as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or queer. The purpose of this study was to describe perceptions of safety, acceptance, and professional development from LGBTQ faculty at a Southeastern university. LGBTQfaculty (n=21) completed an online survey with open-ended questions. Analysis of detailed responses using the constant comparative method resulted in six themes, including: Identity management in the work place, repercussions of identity disclosure on career trajectory, and lack of support from university administration. These themes are illustrated using participant data and then used to provide recommendations for change.

Alternative Education: A Comparative Case Study Of The Behavior Modification Programs Of Two Upstate South Carolina Alternative Schools For Youth Who Exhibit Behavior That Is Disruptive, Timothy Lamont Scipio
Theses and Dissertations
This study examined behavior modification programs in schools designed to focus on discipline and that aim to reform disruptive behavior in students, usually over a limited period of time. This was a comparative case study of two type II alternative schools in the Upstate of South Carolina. The findings contributed to the research base regarding the practical implementation of the essential components for an effective behavior modification program in type II alternative schools. The primary research question was used to guide the study to discover the most effective components within the behavior modification program used by two leaders of Type …

Program Planning, Prioritizing, And Improvement: A Simple Heuristic, Peter Felten, Deandra Little, Leslie Ortquist-Ahrens, Michael Reder
To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development
As educational developers working with multiple constituencies and demands on our time, how can we efficiently and creatively improve our programming and prioritize our efforts? In this chapter, we offer a simple heuristic to prompt quick yet generative examination of our goals or programs in relationship to three key characteristics of effective educa tional development on three different institutional levels. We then describe uses and applications of the tool and reflective process, which allow developers to efficiently gain insight into their work and effectively frame priorities for planning and improvement.

Why Some Physicians Accept Healthcare It And Others Resist It: An Activity-Theoretic Analysis., Anol Bhattacherjee, Christopher Davis, Neset Hikmet
USF St. Petersburg Campus Faculty Publications
This paper examines why physicians react differently to the introduction of healthcare information technology (IT) in the same hospital at the same time. These diverse reactions, manifested as different forms of acceptance and resistance, are interpreted within the social-historical context of physicians’ work at a large urban hospital in the USA, using Activity Theory as the theoretical lens. While prior IT research has examined patterns of “similarities” in user behaviors, we examine user “differences” and reconcile these differences within a meta-theoretic framework. We also extend current IT usage research from voluntary to mandatory setting and demonstrate the viability of activity …
The Heart Of Social Networks: The Ripple Effect Of Emotional Abilities In Relational Well-Being, Virginie Lopez-Kidwell
The Heart Of Social Networks: The Ripple Effect Of Emotional Abilities In Relational Well-Being, Virginie Lopez-Kidwell
Theses and Dissertations--Management
To better understand the effect of emotions on formal and informal interactions in the workplace, I focus on emotional dynamics, the exchange and experience of emotions occurring within repeated interpersonal interactions. Emotional Ability (EA; how individuals perceive, use, understand, and manage their own or others’ emotions) is a key component in emotional dynamics. Specifically, I focus on the role of EA on individuals’ choices of coworkers for gaining emotional support (the receipt of empathy, caring, trust, and concern), and in turn, their occupational well-being and task performance. In addition, I investigate the “ripple effects” of EA, how the EA of …
Enhancing Servant-Leadership’S Practice Through Utilization Of Authentic Dialogue, Russell Horton
Enhancing Servant-Leadership’S Practice Through Utilization Of Authentic Dialogue, Russell Horton
International Journal of Servant-Leadership
While the concept of servant-leadership dates back to biblical times more than two thousand years ago (Sendjaya and Sarros 2002, 57), it is only since the 1970s that the ideas of servant-leadership came into modern leadership scholarship through Robert Greenleaf's writings (ibid.). Several authors, including Gergen and Zelleke (2008), Heineman (2006), Russell and Stone (2002), and Tierney (2006) have commented on a societal leadership deficit. Wong and Davey noted that in some cases this manifests itself as a lack of interested or available leaders for a given organizational or community leadership position (Wong and Davey 2007, 1 ). The lack …

Decentralized Expertise: The Evolution Of Community Forums In Technical Support, Steven Ovadia
Decentralized Expertise: The Evolution Of Community Forums In Technical Support, Steven Ovadia
Publications and Research
This chapter discusses the authority structures found within the community support forums of open and closed source operating systems (Linux, Windows, and OS X), demonstrating how, because of these forums, technical expertise is shifting away from the organizations responsible for creating these systems and into the community using them. One might expect this kind of migration within Linux communities, where in theory anyone can contribute to the code of the project, but it is also being seen in closed source projects, where only certain people, usually employees, have access to the underlying code that controls the operating system. In these …

Whether our interest is business, government. education, or almost any other entity that organizes humans in some way, it seems that we are perpetually in need of more individuals who can lead organizations effectively. But we also live in an era when we need institutions - i.e., the organizations that have formed, and that we have formed, to regulate and improve our lives - that are willing and able to be led. I have long felt, and have been heard to say from time to time, that "the dean can cause problems all by himself, but the dean by himself …

Reforming Legal Education To Prepare Law Students Optimally For Real-World Practice, John M. Lande
Reforming Legal Education To Prepare Law Students Optimally For Real-World Practice, John M. Lande
Faculty Publications
This article synthesizes major points in the October 2012 symposium of the University of Missouri School of Law Center for the Study of Dispute Resolution, entitled "Overcoming Barriers in Preparing Law Students for Real-World Practice." There is a growing consensus that American law schools need to do a better job of preparing students to practice law. Teaching students to think like a lawyer is still necessary but it is not sufficient for students to act like a lawyer soon after they graduate.
Teaching Group Dynamics, Tracy Wallach
Teaching Group Dynamics, Tracy Wallach
Journal of Pedagogy, Pluralism, and Practice
During the last ten years, I have had the opportunity to teach group dynamics to a variety of audiences: graduate and undergraduate students across disciplines (law, social work, conflict resolution, business, human services) in traditional semester-long format; as well as to experienced practitioners in half-day or day-long workshop formats. This article describes my experiences teaching group dynamics in the United States, Palestine, and Turkey. To begin, I will introduce the theoretical perspective of group relations, which underlies my teaching, and offer a critique of the model. Following that, I will describe some of my experiences teaching in the United States, …

Quality Modeling And Improvement Of University Facilities Services Using Six-Sigma - A Case Study On Wayne State University Fpm Services, Mohsen F. Mohamed Isa
Wayne State University Dissertations
Literature survey shows that there is no published information concerning the investigation and/or evaluation (by the customer) of the services provided by universities facilities management units, and no previous research was done to measure and evaluate such services to address, identify, and model the critical factors affecting quality.
This research work proposed a service quality model relating factors affecting quality of services provided by facility management units at higher educational institutions to the customer perception of service quality. It also examined the use of the Six-Sigma DMAIC methodology as an improvement strategy for services provided by facility management units at …
Making An Impact: New Directions For Arts And Humanities Research, Ellen Hazelkorn
Making An Impact: New Directions For Arts And Humanities Research, Ellen Hazelkorn
Articles
The severity of the global economic crisis has put the spotlight firmly on measuring academic and research performance and productivity, and assessing its contribution, value, impact and benefit. While traditionally, research output and impact was measured by peer-publications and citations, there is increased emphasis on a “market-driven approach”, which favours the bio-, medical and technological sciences, and helped reinforce a disciplinary hierarchy in which arts and humanities research (A&HR) has struggled for attention. This article charts the changing policy environment across Ireland, the Netherlands and Norway. It draws on evidence from the HERAVALUE project which studied how different stakeholders value …

Building A Culture Of Innovation: A Case Study In Digital Integration, Anthony H. Vonbank
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
This case study dissertation examines the implementation of digital technology in a mid-sized public school district in southern Minnesota. The methodology involved unstructured interviews and close observation of several teachers, administrators and related staff in the junior-senior high building. These observations were presented in informative vignettes that help to tell the story of the culture of innovation in this school, as well as highlight some of the implementation strategies that aid this school and district in meeting its goal to meet all learners in a 21st century society. The study identifies common barriers such as staff resistance, funding, and technology …
Managing Inner And Outer Conflict: Selves, Subpersonalities, And Internal Family Systems, Leonard L. Riskin
Managing Inner And Outer Conflict: Selves, Subpersonalities, And Internal Family Systems, Leonard L. Riskin
UF Law Faculty Publications
This article describes potential benefits of considering certain processes within an individual that take place in connection with external conflict as if they might be negotiations or other processes that are routinely used to address external disputes, such as mediation or adjudication. In order to think about internal processes in this way, it is necessary to employ a model of the mind that includes entities capable of engaging in such processes. The Internal Family Systems (IFS) model, developed by Richard C. Schwartz, works well for this purpose. The IFS model is grounded on the construct that the mind is composed …

“[B]etter followers beget better leaders.”
Through the years, I have been fond of a set of expressions I sometimes use to underscore the importance of an idea or a cause I believe important and worthy of personal or institutional investment, or both. The expressions fit together like this: our society has a particular problem that needs attention; our colleges and universities, being institutions broadly representative of our society, also have this problem (as we should expect); we need to work on this problem in our colleges and universities; if we cannot solve this problem in our institutions of higher learning, …

Stories Of Journalistic Careers: From Serial Killers To The Changing Nature Of Journalism, Linda Hughes-Kirchubel
Open Access Theses
A career narrative is a story that helps a person define who she is, and how she should act, within the context of career (Meijers & Lengelle, 2012). This thesis is an analysis of three distinct, yet related, career narratives: a metanarrative, a mesonarrative, and a micronarrative. I examine the field of journalism through metanarratives that reflect the sea-change brought about by the advent of the Internet and the production of on-demand news (see 111th Congress, 2009; Rainey & Wellman, 2012; Weldon, 2008). Using the story of two serial killers, I show how the industry has begun to think differently …
Employee Determinants To Share Knowledge In A Us Federal Government Environment, Kenneth White
Employee Determinants To Share Knowledge In A Us Federal Government Environment, Kenneth White
CCAC Theses and Dissertations
Although the literature indicates that knowledge sharing (KS) research is prevalent in the private sector, there is scant empirical research data about KS in the public sector. Moreover, organizations lack an understanding of employee KS behavior. This study investigated two research questions: First, how does the perceived importance of five determinants of KS behavior (organizational culture, workplace trust, incentives, management support, and technology) vary based upon the variables of job function, gender, and work category? Second, what is the relative importance of the five determinants of KS behavior to U.S. federal government employees? This descriptive study employed a Web-based survey …
Developing Software Requirements For A Knowledge Management System That Coordinates Training Programs With Business Processes And Policies In Large Organizations, James Richard Kiper
Developing Software Requirements For A Knowledge Management System That Coordinates Training Programs With Business Processes And Policies In Large Organizations, James Richard Kiper
CCAC Theses and Dissertations
For large organizations, updating instructional programs presents a challenge to keep abreast of constantly changing business processes and policies. Each time a process or policy changes, significant resources are required to locate and modify the training materials that convey the new content. Moreover, without the ability to track learning objects to processes and policies, training managers cannot conduct an effective training gap analysis in these areas. As a result, the corporate training picture is unclear and instructional needs cannot be accurately determined.
The research addressed these problems by recognizing the need for linkages between an organization's business processes, its policies, …

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This study was designed to explore four primary research questions. Why do schools and districts adopt PBIS? Which stakeholders were included in the decision-making process to adopt PBIS? Do these adoption dynamics influence PBIS Tier 2 implementation? With PBIS Tier 2 implementation fidelity as a desirable outcome, what are the relevant facilitators, constraints, and obstacles?
A Survey-Based Study Of Social Workers' Critical Consciousness And Practice With Lgb Clients, Cynthia Lynn Bott
A Survey-Based Study Of Social Workers' Critical Consciousness And Practice With Lgb Clients, Cynthia Lynn Bott
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Social workers are responsible for providing the majority of mental health and substance abuse services in the United States in the role of direct service. Lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LBG) individuals utilize these services at rates that are believed to be higher than other populations. The field of social work embraces social justice as one of its core principles. This cross-sectional survey of 220 BSW and/or MSW social workers investigates two questions: what is the relationship among key aspects of social worker critical consciousness, i.e., attitudes about social justice, change agency, and awareness of heterosexism; and in what ways does …
How Cultural Elements Are Reflected In Policy Discourse Regarding Work-Life Balance : Policy Discourse As An Indicator Of Korean Culture, Ji Sung Kim
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
As the proportion of both working women and dual-income families has increased worldwide over the last few decades, employees' value orientations related to their quality of life have changed considerably, in regard to both their work and personal lives. With these changes, a variety of work-life balance policies and practices have emerged to help employees manage their work and family responsibilities. In addition. policy discussions and public discourse regarding issues of work-life balance have expanded. In the Republic of Korea, the research context of this research, although there have been many efforts both from the legislature and government to promote …

From Capability Trap To Capacity Development : Understanding Local Capacity For Managing Disasters, Asmita Tiwari
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The concept of capacity development is essential to the idea of governance and development. Over the decades, governments and development agencies have promoted capacity development programs. With the increasing number of disaster events and associated losses, there has been heightened attention given to governments' capacity to manage disasters. This is associated with a paradigm shift from reactive to proactive actions. Prevention requires capacity to understand, reduce, and manage risk. Nevertheless, a universally acceptable overarching framework of capacity development does not exist.
A Critique Of Single-Issue Campaigning And The Importance Of Comprehensive Abolitionist Vegan Advocacy, Corey Lee Wrenn, Rob Johnson
A Critique Of Single-Issue Campaigning And The Importance Of Comprehensive Abolitionist Vegan Advocacy, Corey Lee Wrenn, Rob Johnson
Animal Rights Movement Collection
A popular tactic in the professional nonhuman animal rights movement is to utilize species-specific or issue-specific campaigns to increase public concern, motivate participation and extend movement support. This article challenges this traditional tactic of moderate nonhuman animal organizations in critiquing the issue-specific approaches to abolition advanced elsewhere and calls for a holistic abolitionist method that requires advocates to relinquish confusing piecemeal campaigns and instead challenge the underlying problem of speciesism in order to influence lasting and meaningful social change. The article applies Francione's radical theory of nonhuman animal rights, which recognizes the importance of vegan education in challenging this oppression. …

Library Faculty And Instructional Assessment: Creating A Culture Of Assessment Through The High Performance Programming Model Of Organizational Transformation, Meredith G. Farkas, Lisa Janicke Hinchliffe
Collaborative Librarianship
In an environment in which libraries increasingly need to demonstrate their value to faculty and administrators, providing evidence of the library’s contribution to student learning through its instruction program is critical. However, building a culture of assessment can be a challenge, even if librarians recognize its importance. In order to lead change, coordinators of library instruction at institutions where librarians are also tenure-track faculty must build trust and collaboration, lead through influence, and garner support from administration for assessment initiatives. The purpose of this paper is to explore what it takes to build a culture of assessment in academic libraries …
