The Effects Of Rainfall-Runoff On Particulate Organic Carbon Cycling In Salt Marshes, Si Chen
The Effects Of Rainfall-Runoff On Particulate Organic Carbon Cycling In Salt Marshes, Si Chen
Theses and Dissertations
Low tide rainfall-runoff processes have been proposed as a kind of coastal ocean "hot moment" capable of transporting disproportionately large amounts of material from the salt marsh surface to the water column. However, the resulting organic matter cycling has not been well characterized and the cumulative effects of recurring short-term low tide rainfall events are not known, especially in the context of outwelling. The purpose of this Ph.D. research is to quantitatively evaluate the effects of low tide rainfall on particulate organic carbon (POC) cycling in a South Carolina salt marsh.

Characterization Of The Role Of Fro6 In Metal Homeostasis In Arabidopsis Thaliana, Margo Ellen Maynes
Characterization Of The Role Of Fro6 In Metal Homeostasis In Arabidopsis Thaliana, Margo Ellen Maynes
Theses and Dissertations
Iron deficiency is the most common human nutritional disorder in the world today, affecting approximately 2 billon people worldwide, almost a third of the world's population. For most of the world's population, plant foods serve as the major source of dietary iron. One approach that may contribute towards the solution of iron deficiency is the development of crop plants that contain higher levels of bioavailable iron. This project focuses on FRO6, a ferric chelate reductase in Arabidopsis thaliana that is thought to reduce apoplastic iron for transport across the plasma membrane in leaf cells. We hypothesize therefore that FRO6 controls …

Going Beyond Phosphorylation: Acetylphosphate-Mediated Ran Polymerase Acetylation And Caper Phosphorylation Co-Regulate Transcription Of Escherichia Coli Stress-Responsive Gene Cpxp, Bruno P. Lima
Dissertations
The ability of bacteria to sense and adapt to environmental changes has al-lowed these organisms to thrive in all parts of the globe and to establish many complex interactions with the environments they live as well as other members of these environments. Crucial to monitoring extracellular conditions is a group of signaling pathways known as two-component signal transduction system (2CST). These systems relay information from the extracellular environment to the interior of the cell via a transfer of phosphoryl groups from the sensory protein know as sensor kinase (SK) to the output protein known as response regulator (RR).

Reverse Innovation From The Least Of Our Neighbors: Community Health Workers And U.S. Health Care, M Therese Lysaught
Institute of Pastoral Studies: Faculty Publications and Other Works
In a recent New York Times article, Pauline Chen, MD, asks: “What We Can Learn from Third-World Health Care?” Chen rattles our assumption that the vector of aid and insight travels in one direction — from the U.S., with all our resources, knowledge and technology, to less fortunate places that need our help. Could the arrow point in the opposite direction? Could we who have everything learn from the widow and her mite?

Pregnant And In Prison: Can The Quality Of Services Provided Affect The Overall Perception Of Being Pregnant In Prison?, Peter Chatten
The Plymouth Law and Criminal Justice Review
The suicides of six women within a year at Styal Prison in 2006 (Prison Reform Trust: 2010) lead the Government to appoint Baroness Jean Corston to undertake a review of women with particular vulnerabilities in the criminal justice system. The result? The Corston Report, a document with recommendations for a new woman-centred approach in dealing with female offending. Whilst this was a progressive movement, one particular minority of prisoners received little mention – pregnant women. With no official statistics on the number of pregnant women in prison, they become a difficult group to provide services for even though they are …

Mechanisms By Which Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy May Resolve Inflammation In Chronic Wounds, Anwar J Al-Mzaiel
Mechanisms By Which Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy May Resolve Inflammation In Chronic Wounds, Anwar J Al-Mzaiel
Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses
Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy is the intermittent inhalation of 100% oxygen at a pressure greater than one atmosphere absolute. It is an effective treatment for various inflammatory conditions, including chronic wounds which are characterized by an excessive influx of neutrophils and their prolonged persistence at the wound site. Neutrophil apoptosis and clearance have been shown to be required for resolution of inflammation. The mechanisms by which HBO aids wound healing are well documented, but its effects on cellular inflammatory response are not well understood particularly with respect to neutrophils. The hypothesis presented in this thesis is that increased oxygenation via …

A Comparative Analysis Of How The Rights Of Children As Set Out In The United Nations Convention On The Rights Of The Child Are Made Effective Through Their Implementation In Kurdistan/Iraq And The United Kingdom, Nishitiman Mohammed
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child was unanimously adopted in 1989. It was hoped that the Convention would have a positive impact on all children however, despite a country ratifying the Convention and proclaiming to have laws in the interests of children it is still possible for that country to fail in the attempt to implement children’s rights effectively. This can clearly be seen in Kurdistan, Iraq where implementation of children’s rights remains limited. With the continuing violence in Iraq, children’s rights have been somewhat neglected and as with many such situations children are the innocent …

The Characterisation Of The Freezing Damage Response During Flowering In European And Middle Eastern Wheat Cultivars (Triticum Aestivum L), Mohammed Hamdan Edan Al-Issawi
Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses
Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) is occasionally exposed to low temperature during flowering and huge economic losses can occur especially in some key production countries such as Australia. Although it is generally predicted that there will be a rise in global temperature there are still predicted to be risks associated with low temperature for temperate crops. Post head emergence frost damage remains a major constraint to increasing wheat production. Five Iraqi varieties (Abu-Ghariab, Fatah, Sham6, IPA95 and IPA99) were screened for their frost hardiness (LT50). Abu-Ghariab was chosen for further investigations along with the European cv. Claire because the acclimated frost …

Building Morale In A Soldier Town: Home Front Women And The Gi In Columbia, South Carolina, 1941-1945, Jessica Kathleen Childress
Theses and Dissertations
As the United States mobilized for war in 1941, cities and towns across America, especially those closest to military bases, were faced with an unprecedented influx of soldiers, airmen, and sailors. To cope with these waves of servicemen in their off-duty hours, particularly to provide for wholesome entertainment and lessen the emotional weight of wartime, Columbia, South Carolina solicited participation in morale-building programs from its residents. Community leaders recognized their responsibility for funding programs and providing buildings to meet the soldiers' recreational needs, but they relied on women's organizations and female students to build morale through meaningful social interactions with …
Promoting Early Childhood Development Through Community Health Worker Interventions: Implementation And Measurement Issues In Rural Pakistan, Zaeem Haq
Theses and Dissertations
Appropriate nutrition and psychosocial stimulation during the first three years of life can have long-lasting effects on a child's health and development. However, not all children in the world receive adequate nutrition and psychosocial stimulation during this period. There has been enormous interest in developing the evidence on the most effective ways of implementing and assessing early childhood development (ECD) promotion interventions in resource poor settings. Despite the interest, the integration of ECD interventions into pre-existing public health programs, and assessment of these interventions in extended family, rural household environment have not been addressed.
The dissertation research presented here was …

Some of these adults may benefit from learning a problem-solving decision-making method to assist them in dealing with everyday problems they encounter. This study taught three men with extensive histories of homelessness, but who were currently housed, the SODAS problem-solving decision-making method, and assessed their ability to learn it and guide another adult in the use of the method in simulated role-play problem situations. The acquisition of SODAS from behavioral rehearsal training was evaluated using a multiple-baseline design across participants' role …
Snail Induces Mesenchymal Transition And Promotes Egfr Tki Resistance In Nsclc Cells Harboring Efgr Kinase Domain Mutations, Rutu Gandhi
Master's Theses
Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer related death, accounting for one third of all deaths from cancer worldwide. About 85-90% of lung cancers are non-small cell lung cancers (NSCLCs). Molecular targeted therapies such as epidermal growth factor receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitors (EGFR TKIs) provide an effective treatment option for oncogene addicted NSCLC. However, the development of resistance to EGFR TKIs continues to be the major limitation in the treatment of NSCLC. Resistance to EGFR TKIs has been associated with the loss of canonical epithelial protein E-cadherin, suggesting involvement of epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT) in conferring EGFR TKI …
Identifying And Characterizing The Degradative Pathway Of The Retroviral Restriction Factor Rhtrim5Α, Rachel Nelson
Identifying And Characterizing The Degradative Pathway Of The Retroviral Restriction Factor Rhtrim5Α, Rachel Nelson
Master's Theses
Human immunodeficiency virus 1 (HIV-1) is a lentivirus that progresses to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). The protein TRIM5alpha from rhesus macaques (rhTRIM5alpha) restricts HIV-1 by blocking infection after entry of the virion into cells. Treatment of rhTRIM5alpha expressing cells with inhibitors to a cellular degradation pathway, the proteasome, partially relieves restriction but does not inhibit rhTRIM5alpha protein turnover. The role of a second degradation pathway, the autophagy-lysosomal pathway, in TRIM5alpha mediated restriction has not been explored.
In the present study, we demonstrate that rhTRIM5alpha is degraded by chaperone mediated autophagy (CMA). Inhibition of CMA alters rhTRIM5alpha localization and turnover, while …
Selective Expansion Of B Cells By Intestinal Microbiota, Karina Ochoa
Selective Expansion Of B Cells By Intestinal Microbiota, Karina Ochoa
Master's Theses
In rabbits, antibody diversity and B cell expansion are generated in gut-associated lymphoid tissues (GALT), in an antigen- and T cell-independent mechanism, and require interaction with intestinal microbiota. I investigated, in vitro, the mechanism by which commensals drive GALT reactions. Bacteria were isolated from the GALT of rabbits and identified by 16sRNA sequencing. I found that the commensals can bind to Ig, independently of their specificity. In addition, a ~20kDa bacterial molecule was immunoprecipitated with recombinant Ig molecules. Stimulation of B cells with selected bacterial molecules induced the activation of B cells. Stimulation of B cells through TLR2 induced the …

Vocabulary Instruction : Becoming Word Conscious To Support Reading Comprehension, Amy Evelyn Bries
Vocabulary Instruction : Becoming Word Conscious To Support Reading Comprehension, Amy Evelyn Bries
Graduate Research Papers
Currently, many classroom teachers are striving to support students' comprehension skills. Teachers are currently teaching vocabulary through incidental exposures. The dependency of vocabulary skills are falling to the students. The students might be asked to memorize rather than gathering a deeper meaning of a word and how we use the word within context. Over the past several years research has shown that vocabulary develops more rapidly after grade three, but the primary grades need to begin with a strong literacy foundation in word learning strategies (Biemiller, 2003, 2006). This research project organized professional development sessions for teachers, to provide the …
