Mechanisms And Cytotoxic Effects Of Nqo1-Directed Lavendamycin Derivatives And Mitochondria-Targeted Anthracenyl Isoxazole Amides As Novel Antitumor Agents, Alison King Kearns
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Cancer is a common, complex, and oftentimes fatal disease. Despite extensive research in the field of cancer drug discovery, there are still improvements to be made in the design of effective anticancer agents. This project involved three separate but related studies that fall under the category of anticancer drug discovery as a whole. The overall goal of this project was to design and investigate the mechanisms of action of new antitumor agents to be used against solid tumors. First, we developed a series of anthracenyl isoxazole amides (AIMs) designed to bind to G-quadruplex DNA and inhibit telomerase. Results from this …

Developmental Stress In Birds: Phenotypic And Fitness, Ondi L. Crino
Developmental Stress In Birds: Phenotypic And Fitness, Ondi L. Crino
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
The environment animals experience during development can have important effects on phenotype, performance, and fitness across multiple life-history stages. Environmental cues experienced during development can provide information to animals about the environment they will soon inhabit and promote phenotypic changes which affect fitness. Increasing evidence suggests that physiological stress may be one such cue that conveys environmental information to developing animals. Here, I explore the short- and long-term consequences of developmental stress in captive and free-living birds. In chapter one, I explore the effects of developmental stress on body size and physiological stress responses across life-history stages in zebra finches …

Microbiology Of Cheddar Cheese Made With Different Fat Contents Using A Lactococcus Lactissingle-Strain Starter, Jeff Broadbent, C. Brighton, D. J. Mcmahon, N. Farkye, M. E. Johnson, J. L. Steele
Nutrition, Dietetics, and Food Sciences Faculty Publications
Flavor development in low-fat Cheddar cheese is typified by delayed or muted evolution of desirable flavor and aroma, and a propensity to acquire undesirable meaty-brothy or burnt-brothy off-flavor notes early in ripening. The biochemical basis for these flavor deficiencies is unclear, but flavor production in bacterial-ripened cheese is known to rely on microorganisms and enzymes present in the cheese matrix. Lipid removal fundamentally alters cheese composition, which can modify the cheese microenvironment in ways that may affect growth and enzymatic activity of starter or nonstarter lactic acid bacteria (NSLAB). Additionally, manufacture of low-fat cheeses often involves changes to processing protocols …

Results demonstrated increased intent to follow food safety practices by properly cooking, chilling, and separating food items, as well as properly cleaning food preparation surfaces.
Exploring Nurse Case Managers' Language Describing Health Needs And Interventions With Populations, Kathleen I. Gremel
Exploring Nurse Case Managers' Language Describing Health Needs And Interventions With Populations, Kathleen I. Gremel
Open Access Dissertations
Major advances in health information technologies, safety and quality initiatives, and health policy changes have fueled the development and implementation of the Electronic Health Record (EHR). Any discipline’s work and contribution to patient care exist in the EHR only as they are coded. Thus, coding nursing’s knowledge, work and contribution to patient care in meaningful ways requires nurses to have a language that defines nursing concepts and works consistently and reliably. Currently the American Nurses Association (ANA) recognizes twelve (12) nursing languages being used in the EHR. Over the last forty years many research efforts have validated these nursing languages …

Food safety is a hotly debated issue. While food nourishes, sustains, and enriches our lives, it can also kill us. At any given meal, our menu comes from a dozen different sources. Without proper incentives to encourage food safety, microbial pathogens can, and do enter the food source--so much so that according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), each year roughly one in six Americans (or forty-eight million people) gets sick, 128,000 are hospitalized, and 3,000 die of foodborne diseases. What is the optimal way to prevent unsafe foods from entering the marketplace?
Safety in the food …

Understanding Multidrug Resistance In Gram-Negative Bacteria -- A Study Of A Drug Efflux Pump Acrb And A Periplasmic Chaperone Sura, Meng Zhong
Theses and Dissertations--Chemistry
Multiple drug resistance (MDR) has been a severe issue in treatment and recovery from infection.Gram-negative bacteria intrinsically exhibit higher drug tolerance than Gram-positive microbes. In this thesis, two proteins involved in Gram-negative bacterial MDR were studied, AcrB and SurA.
Resistance-nodulation-cell division pump AcrAB-TolC is the major MDR efflux system in Gram-negative bacteria and efficiently extrudes a broad range of substances from the cells. To study subtle conformational changes of AcrB in vivo, a reporter platform was designed. Cysteine pairs were introduced into different regions in the periplasmic domain of the protein, and the extents of disulfide bond formation were …

Survey Of Medicinal Herbs Of Central Illinois Prairie And Woodlands, Debra Ann Welch
Survey Of Medicinal Herbs Of Central Illinois Prairie And Woodlands, Debra Ann Welch
Masters Theses
Illinois has been named the "Prairie State" for good reason. When the pioneers discovered a vast sea of grasses and forbs, they thought the prairie infertile. However, they soon found out that the blacksoil prairie was composed of a rich diversity of plant species that could provide much of the medical and nutritional needs of everyday life. The medicinal uses of many prairie species have not only been tested throughout history, but today modern science has also discovered their therapeutic importance.
The purpose of this study was to survey prairie species growing in the central Illinois counties of Coles and …

Nebraska Household Participation In The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, Randolph L. Cantrell
Nebraska Household Participation In The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, Randolph L. Cantrell
Cornhusker Economics
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) has become a point of contention during negotiations over the passage of a new Farm Bill, with a version of the bill now being offered in the House of Representatives that contains no provision for the massive nutrition program. This is a move that is largely unsupported by the agricultural industry, for which SNAP has long been seen as a way to align urban interests with agriculture.

Effects Of Dissolved Nutrient Ratios And Concentrations On Litter-Associated Microbial Activity In Streamside Channels, Timothy Burns
Effects Of Dissolved Nutrient Ratios And Concentrations On Litter-Associated Microbial Activity In Streamside Channels, Timothy Burns
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Heterotrophic consumers, such as microorganisms and invertebrates, play a fundamental role in the flow of carbon and energy in streams. The effects of dissolved nutrient concentrations, and especially ratios, on litter—associated microorganisms and decomposition rates of detritus are poorly understood. This study addressed the responses of heterotrophic microbes to a wide range of concentrations and ratios of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) in streamside channels simulating headwater streams. Two main questions were: (1) do microbial parameters and litter decomposition rates peak at a dissolved N:P ratio that approaches the nutrient ratio of microbial biomass, and (2) does microbial …
The Rise And Fall Of Bread In America, Amanda Benson
The Rise And Fall Of Bread In America, Amanda Benson
Honors Theses - Providence Campus
Over the last century bread has gone through cycles of acceptance and popularity in the United States. The pressure exerted on the American bread market by manufacturers’ advertising campaigns and various dietary trends has caused it to go through periods of acceptance and rejection. Before the industrialization of bread making, consumers held few negative views on bread and perceived it primarily as a form of sustenance. After its industrialization, the battle between the manufacturers and the neighborhood bakeries over consumers began. With manufacturers, such as Wonder Bread, trying to maximize profits and dominate the market, corporate leaders aimed to discourage …
