Front-Of-Package Nutrition Claims: Trustworthy Facts Or Deceptive Marketing? Closing The Loopholes In Labeling, Kathryn E. Hayes Jan 2013

Front-Of-Package Nutrition Claims: Trustworthy Facts Or Deceptive Marketing? Closing The Loopholes In Labeling, Kathryn E. Hayes

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The note argues that front-of-package (FOP) labeling on children's food products is insufficient and often misleading, failing to meet basic nutritional standards. It advocates for the adoption of uniform, science-based labeling standards developed by an objective body like the Institute of Medicine (IOM) to help parents make healthier choices. The analysis highlights the limitations of self-regulation by manufacturers and the need for stronger governmental oversight to address deceptive practices and improve public health outcomes.

Shafqat, Neeraj Kumar, P. Stephen Baenziger, M. Liakat Ali, Ismail M. Dweikat, B. Todd Campbell, Kulvinder Singh Gill

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Earlier we identified wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) chromosome 3A as a major determinant of grain yield and its component traits. In the present study, a high-density genetic linkage map of 81 chromosome 3A-specific markers was developed to increase the precision of previously identified yield component QTLs, and to map QTLs for biomass-related traits. Many of the previously identified QTLs for yield and its component traits were confirmed and were localized to narrower intervals. Four novel QTLs one each for shoot biomass (Xcfa2262-Xbcd366), total biomass (wPt2740-Xcfa2076), kernels/spike (KPS) (Xwmc664-Xbarc67), and Pseudocercosporella induced lodging ( …

Interventions varied in type and level of family involvement, cultural adaptation, delivery format, and behavior change intervention strategies; most targeted parent-child dyads. Some similarities in approach based on …

Calendula Officinalis Growth And Production Of Secondary Compounds In Greenhouse And Soil-Based Herbal Organic Production Systems, Victoria M. Anderson Jan 2013

Calendula Officinalis Growth And Production Of Secondary Compounds In Greenhouse And Soil-Based Herbal Organic Production Systems, Victoria M. Anderson

Theses and Dissertations--Plant and Soil Sciences

Calendula officinalis is a useful model crop because calendula flowers are used both ornamentally and medicinally. Organic production systems have many challenges; among these is the synchrony of nitrogen mineralization with the requirements of the crop. Organic greenhouse substrates have significantly different initial nitrogen levels which influence the performance of calendula, the highest initial N and plant performance was found in the organic compost peat substrate (OCP). The addition of supplemental nitrogen improved performance, but only OCP performed as well as the conventionally fertilized peat-based substrate. The nitrogen mineralization patterns in a soil-based greenhouse pot experiment showed that highly processed …

What's Law Got To Do With It?: Why We Should Mediate, Rather Than Litigate, Cases Of Wrongful Life, Shawna Benston Jan 2013

What's Law Got To Do With It?: Why We Should Mediate, Rather Than Litigate, Cases Of Wrongful Life, Shawna Benston

Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution

In light of the legal and societal disfavor toward wrongful life suits, this Note examines the cultural, (bio)ethical, legal, and philosophical background of the wrongful life tort. While the disability rights movement and the pro-life strains of the abortion debate hope to silence proponents of wrongful life suits, the evolution of a legal right to die underscores the importance of autonomy and privacy for the individual. Philosophical exploration of prospective children-including the nonidentity problem, claim-rights and corresponding duties, and the subjunctive-threshold notion of harmhelps explain the confusion and moral conundrum that pervade the very notion of "wrongful life" and that …

Nitrogen–Climate Interactions In Us Agriculture, G. Philip Robertson, Tom W. Bruulsema, Ron J. Gehl, David Kanter, Denise L. Mauzerall, C. Alan Rotz, Candiss O. Williams Jan 2013

Nitrogen–Climate Interactions In Us Agriculture, G. Philip Robertson, Tom W. Bruulsema, Ron J. Gehl, David Kanter, Denise L. Mauzerall, C. Alan Rotz, Candiss O. Williams

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Agriculture in the United States (US) cycles large quantities of nitrogen (N) to produce food, fuel, and fiber and is a major source of excess reactive nitrogen (Nr) in the environment. Nitrogen lost from cropping systems and animal operations moves to waterways, groundwater, and the atmosphere. Changes in climate and climate variability may further affect the ability of agricultural systems to conserve N. The N that escapes affects climate directly through the emissions of nitrous oxide (N2O), and indirectly through the loss of nitrate (NO3-), nitrogen oxides (NOx) and ammonia to downstream and …

Soil Type And Moisture Regime Control Microbial C And N Mineralization In Grassland Soils More Than Atmospheric Co2-Induced Changes In Litter Quality, Virginia L. Jin, Richard L. Haney, Philip A. Fay, H. Wayne Polley Jan 2013

Soil Type And Moisture Regime Control Microbial C And N Mineralization In Grassland Soils More Than Atmospheric Co2-Induced Changes In Litter Quality, Virginia L. Jin, Richard L. Haney, Philip A. Fay, H. Wayne Polley

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Global change-induced alterations in litter quality and soil moisture regime will likely impact grassland C and N dynamics, but how these changes interact with edaphic properties across the landscape is unclear. We measured the effects of litter quality, soil type, soil moisture level, and soil drying-rewetting frequency (D-RW) on microbial C and N mineralization of litter and soil organic matter (SOM) in a full-factorial, controlled incubation experiment. Four levels of litter quality (no litter; or litter from Bouteloua curtipendula grown under 280, 380, 500 μL L‒1 CO2) were surface-applied to three contrasting soils common to Blackland Prairie …

Greenhouse Gas Fluxes From No-Till Rotated Corn In The Upper Midwest, R. Michael Lehman, Shannon L. Osborne Jan 2013

Greenhouse Gas Fluxes From No-Till Rotated Corn In The Upper Midwest, R. Michael Lehman, Shannon L. Osborne

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

We determined soil surface fluxes of greenhouse gases (carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, methane) from no-till, dryland corn (Zea mays L.) in eastern South Dakota and tested the effect of rotation on greenhouse gas fluxes from corn. The corn was grown within a randomized, complete block study that included both a 2-year (corn–soybean) rotation and a 4-year (corn-field peas–winter wheat–soybean) rotation with plots containing the corn phase present in every year, 2007–2010. Annual carbon dioxide (CO2) fluxes were between 1500 and 4000 kg CO2–C ha−1 during the four-year study. Annual nitrous oxide (N2O) …

Adoption Of Site-Specific Variable Rate Sprinkler Irrigation Systems, Robert G. Evans, Jake Larue, Kenneth C. Stone, Bradley A. King Jan 2013

Adoption Of Site-Specific Variable Rate Sprinkler Irrigation Systems, Robert G. Evans, Jake Larue, Kenneth C. Stone, Bradley A. King

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

More than 20 years of private and public research on site-specific variable rate sprinkler irrigation (SS-VRI) technology on self-propelled center pivot and linear move irrigation systems has resulted in limited commercial adoption of the technology. Competing patents, liability, and proprietary software have affected industry’s willingness to move into a new technology area. Documented and proven water conservation strategies using site specific irrigation are quite limited. Marginal costs associated with site-specific technologies are high. Although sales of SS-VRI are increasing, they are primarily being used for eliminating irrigation and chemigation on non-cropped areas of a field or for land application of …

Impacts Of Drought On Plant Water Relations And Nitrogen Nutrition In Dryland Perennial Grasses, Albina Khasanova, Jeremy J. James, Rebecca E. Drenovsky Jan 2013

Impacts Of Drought On Plant Water Relations And Nitrogen Nutrition In Dryland Perennial Grasses, Albina Khasanova, Jeremy J. James, Rebecca E. Drenovsky

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Background and aims Extensive worldwide dryland degradation calls for identification of functional traits critical to dryland plant performance and restoration outcomes. Most trait examination has focused on drought tolerance, although most dryland systems are water and nutrient co-limited. We studied how drought impacts both plant water relations and nitrogen (N) nutrition.

Methods We grew a suite of grasses common to the Intermountain West under both well-watered and drought conditions in the greenhouse. These grasses represented three congener pairs (Agropyron, Elymus, Festuca) differing in their habitat of origin (“wetter” or “drier”). We measured growth, water relations, N resorption efficiency …

Feed Management Practices To Reduce Manure Phosphorus Excretion In Dairy Cattle, E. Kebreab, A. V. Hansen, B. Leytem Jan 2013

Feed Management Practices To Reduce Manure Phosphorus Excretion In Dairy Cattle, E. Kebreab, A. V. Hansen, B. Leytem

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Phosphorus (P) is an essential mineral that needs to be supplied in sufficient quantities for maintenance and growth and milk production in dairy cattle. However, over 60% of the P consumed can be excreted in faeces with a potential to cause environmental pollution. Concern over higher levels of P in intensively managed livestock systems has led to legislation such as the Water Framework Directive in the European Union. In this manuscript, several methods of reducing P pollution are discussed. A major source of environmental P pollution has been overfeeding P mainly due to addition of ‘safety margin’ over the animal’s …

Rats Acquire Stronger Preference For Flavors Consumed Towards The End Of A High-Fat Meal, Kevin P. Myers Jan 2013

Rats Acquire Stronger Preference For Flavors Consumed Towards The End Of A High-Fat Meal, Kevin P. Myers

Faculty Journal Articles

Rats learn to prefer flavors associated with postingestive effects of nutrients. The physiological signals underlying this postingestive reward are unknown. We have previously shown that rats readily learn to prefer a flavor that was consumed early in a multi-flavored meal when glucose is infused intragastrically (IG), suggesting rapid postingestive reward onset. The present experiments investigate the timing of postingestive fat reward, by providing distinctive flavors in the first and second halves of meals accompanied by IG fat infusion. Learning stronger preference for the earlier or later flavor would indicate when the rewarding postingestive effects are sensed. Rats consumed sweetened, calorically-dilute …

Juvenile Ornamentation: Its Evolution, Genetic Basis, And Variation Across Habitats, Angela Tringali Jan 2013

Juvenile Ornamentation: Its Evolution, Genetic Basis, And Variation Across Habitats, Angela Tringali

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Ornamental traits are considered honest advertisements of fitness, and their evolution is usually explained in terms of sexual selection. This explanation remains unsatisfactory in some instances, for example, juvenile birds whose plumage is molted prior to adulthood and breeding. I first evaluate whether juvenile plumage reflectance signals dominance status in the Federally Threatened Florida scrub-jay (Aphelocoma coerulescens) using a combination of observational and experimental methods. Then I estimate the heritability, non-genetic maternal and environmental effects, and strength of selection on juvenile plumage reflectance using archived feather samples and a pedigree constructed from historical nest records. Finally, I compare plumage reflectance …

Demographic and schooling information was gathered from school aged children in the Eastern Province of Zambia. The four subtests of the Zambian Achievement Test were used to capture academic achievement. Three subtests of …

Modeling The Epidemiological Impact Of Human Hookworm Infection, Laura Skrip Jan 2013

Modeling The Epidemiological Impact Of Human Hookworm Infection, Laura Skrip

Public Health Theses

Background: Chronic hookworm infection affects an estimated 576 to 740 million people worldwide. Despite mass drug administration efforts, the morbidity associated with this soil-transmitted helminth remains a significant public health issue. Due to inter- and intra- community heterogeneity in susceptibility to infection, mathematical modeling can serve as an effective and efficient tool for investigating hookworm transmission in different settings and for guiding policymakers to consider new treatment and prevention strategies.

Methods: Here we developed an age-structured, compartmental S-I model to identify epidemiological parameters for hookworm infection and to assess rates of attributable anemia within the population of Zanzibar. The model …

Neighborhood Level Socioeconomic Status And Rurality And Shiga Toxin-Producing Escherichia Coli Incidence: Connecticut, 2000-2011, Bridget Morrissey Whitney

Public Health Theses

Background: Shiga toxin Escherichia coli (STEC) O157 and other STEC strains are a well-known cause of enteric illness. National estimates are that STEC O157 causes approximately 96,534 illnesses every year in the United States, with another 168,698 illnesses caused by non-O157 STEC serotypes. Determining economic and sociodemographic factors associated with enteric disease incidence may provide new understandings of the transmission of these illnesses, particularly community transmission, and may prove useful in the prevention of disease.

Methods: A total of 764 incident STEC cases were reported in CT from 2000 to 2011. Incident cases were geocoded based on the case's address …
