International Journal of Speleology

The metabolism of hypogean organisms is frequently molded by the cave environment traits, especially food scarcity. The aim of the present work was to evaluate the influence of such environment on lipid composition and hepatic lipogenesis in the fish Ancistrus cryptophthalmus. For this, the species was compared to an epigean population of the same species. A greater accumulation of total lipids was observed in the cave-dwelling fish (18.36 g/100 g tissue) compared to the surface fish (14.09 g/100 g tissue). The muscle fatty acid profile also varied between the populations. Arachidonic acid was only detected in the epigean fish, while …

Diversity And Biosynthetic Potential Of Culturable Aerobic Heterotrophic Bacteria Isolated From Magura Cave, Bulgaria, Iva Tomova, Irina Lazarkevich, Anna Tomova, Margarita Kambourova, Evgenia Vasileva-Tonkova

International Journal of Speleology

Biocapacity of bacteria inhabiting karstic caves to produce valuable biologically active compounds is still slightly investigated. A total of 46 culturable heterotrophic bacteria were isolated under aerobic conditions from the Gallery with pre-historical drawings in MaguraCave, Bulgaria. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that most of bacterial isolates affiliated with Proteobacteria (63%), followed by Actinobacteria (10.9%), Bacteroidetes (10.9%), and Firmicutes (6.5%). A strong domination of Gram-negative bacteria (total 81%) belonging to nine genera: Serratia, Pseudomonas, Enterobacter, Sphingobacterium, Stenotrophomonas, Commamonas, Acinetobacter, Obesumbacterium, and Myroides, was observed. Gram-positive isolates were represented by the genera Bacillus, Arthrobacter, and Micrococcus. One isolate …

Historical Remedies Versus Current Pathogens : Laboratory Investigation Of The Efficacy Of Traditional Herbal Remedies Against Present-Day Common Causes Of Bacterial Pneumonia, Eibhlin Mccarthy

Theses

Despite the medical advances of recent years, pneumonia is still a common disease in Ireland, accounting for approximately 7% of deaths in this country'. While national databases such as those run by CIDR and SARI ensure that incidences of systemic and notifiable infections such as tuberculosis are recorded, there are currently no available statistics on commonplace respiratory isolates within Ireland. This study analysed the available data on bacterial pathogens isolated from respiratory samples at a 355 bed Irish hospital over a one year period. Seasonal variations and resistance patterns were noted. The most frequently isolated pathogens were Staphylococcus aureus (27%), …

Evaluating Hypotheses That Explain Non-Continuous Responses To Syllable Periods ("Skipping") During Phonotaxis By Female Acheta Domesticus, Tori Joy Steely Jan 2013

Evaluating Hypotheses That Explain Non-Continuous Responses To Syllable Periods ("Skipping") During Phonotaxis By Female Acheta Domesticus, Tori Joy Steely

Master's Theses

One way to classify female cricket phonotactic response is as "non-skipping" or "skipping." "Skipping" is defined as crickets that respond to a non-continuous range of calling songs. This investigation evaluates the temporal aspects of typical phonotactic protocols and attempts to determine if "skipping" is due to a filtering mechanism or if "skipping" is an artifact of testing protocol. Rather than a notch filter or testing parameters inhibiting a phonotactic response to a syllable period within the range of a band pass filter, I hypothesize that "skipping" occurs as a result of the probabilistic nature of phonotaxis.

International Law In A Time Of Scarcity: An Introduction, Harlan G. Cohen Jan 2013

International Law In A Time Of Scarcity: An Introduction, Harlan G. Cohen

Faculty Scholarship

Stories of scarcity litter the morning newspapers. Around the world, resources — food, water, fuel sources, clean air — seem stretched to, or even beyond, capacity. Consequences have already been serious, including suffering and unrest. Competition for resources seems likely only to increase. Does international law have the tools to manage or even solve this growing global problem? It was with this question in mind that the editors of the Georgia Journal of International and Comparative Law convened their 2012 symposium: “International Law in a Time of Scarcity.”

This short essay serves as introduction to that symposium and the related …

The Influence Of Exotic Plant Invasion On Native Bee Abundance And Demography, And The Pollination And Abundance Of Native Plants, Jennifer Palladini Jan 2013

The Influence Of Exotic Plant Invasion On Native Bee Abundance And Demography, And The Pollination And Abundance Of Native Plants, Jennifer Palladini

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Flowering plants and bees are fundamentally linked. Bees rely wholly on floral resources for food and many native plants rely on bees to assist in reproduction. Despite this fundamental connection, how plants and their bee pollinators influence one another's abundance remains unclear. Also unclear is how invasion by exotic flowering plants disrupts bee- native plant relationships. I examined how the invasive plant, Euphorbia esula (Euphorbiaceae) influenced the native annual forb, Clarkia pulchella (Onagraceae) by altering pollinator visitation (i.e., indirect effects) and through direct resource competition. I observed pollinator visitation and estimated the extent to which plant reproduction was limited by …

Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND: Adaptation to chronic ethanol (EtOH) treatment of rats results in a changed functional state of the liver and greatly inhibits its regenerative ability, which may contribute to the progression of alcoholic liver disease.

METHODS: In this study, we investigated the effect of chronic EtOH intake on hepatic microRNA (miRNA) expression in male Sprague-Dawley rats during the initial 24 hours of liver regeneration following 70% partial hepatectomy (PHx) using miRNA microarrays. miRNA expression during adaptation to EtOH was investigated using RT-qPCR. Nuclear factor kappa B (NFκB) binding at target miRNA promoters was investigated with chromatin immunoprecipitation.

RESULTS: Unsupervised clustering of …

Factors Shaping The Ontogeny Of Vocal Signals In A Wild Parrot, Karl S. Berg, Steven R. Beissinger, Jack W. Bradbury Jan 2013

Factors Shaping The Ontogeny Of Vocal Signals In A Wild Parrot, Karl S. Berg, Steven R. Beissinger, Jack W. Bradbury

School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Biology)

Parrots rely heavily on vocal signals to maintain their social and mobile lifestyles. We studied vocal ontogeny in nests of wild green-rumped parrotlets (Forpus passerinus) in Venezuela. We identified three successive phases of vocal signaling that corresponded closely to three independently derived phases of physiological development. For each ontogenetic phase, we characterized the relative importance of anatomical constraints, motor skills necessary for responding to specific contexts of the immediate environment, and the learning of signals that are necessary for adult forms of communication. We observed shifts in the relative importance of these three factors as individuals progressed from …

Opportunistic Pathogenic Bacteria Colonize Thorns Of Native Rio Grande Valley Plants, Felicia A. Charles, Sergio Cepeda, J. Andrew Mcdonald, Kristine L. Lowe Jan 2013

Opportunistic Pathogenic Bacteria Colonize Thorns Of Native Rio Grande Valley Plants, Felicia A. Charles, Sergio Cepeda, J. Andrew Mcdonald, Kristine L. Lowe

School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Biology)

Thorns serve as mechanical defenses of plants against herbivory. However, plant thorns harbor microorganisms that are potentially pathogenic. These pathogens may be transferred to herbivores and other animals and provide an additional defense for the plants. Thorns from 5 plant species native to the Rio Grande Valley of South Texas were collected and used to isolate bacteria colonizing the thorn surface. Thorns, leaves and stems of plants were visualized using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) to observe any bacteria on the plant surface. Isolated bacteria were tested for their ability to grow in aerobic versus anaerobic environments, to produce hemolysis, carbon …

Competitive swim experience ranged from novice to seven years or more (M …

The Sensory Processing Patterns And Activity Choices Of A Child With Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Mixed-Methods Case Study, Valerie Miller Jan 2013

The Sensory Processing Patterns And Activity Choices Of A Child With Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Mixed-Methods Case Study, Valerie Miller

Online Theses and Dissertations

It is estimated that up to 95% of children with autism spectrum disorder experience sensory processing problems. Minimal research is available on the relationship between specific sensory processing patterns, activity preference and behavior patterns in children. It is hypothesized that if children participate in play activities that support their sensory needs, they will experience less behavioral problems, more self-regulating behavior and a higher quality of life. This mixed-methods case study examines how a child with autism spectrum disorder participates in activities and looks at if those activities support sensory needs, thus reinforcing self-regulatory behaviors.

Shortcut To Long-Distance Developing Of A Tissue Culture Medium: Micropropagation Of Mature Almond Cultivars As A Case Study, Mehmet Nuri̇ Nas, Yüksel Bölek, Nevzat Sevgi̇n

Turkish Journal of Botany

Culture medium development methods are time-consuming, laborious, and require a large amount of experimental materials. The Nas hypothesis for the development of a micropropagation medium offers a less time-consuming and a less laborious approach. According to this hypothesis, the composition of a culture medium for a particular species should resemble the seed composition. In accordance with this hypothesis, first, an almond culture medium [Nas Almond Medium (NAM)] was developed based on almond kernel composition. Then, using mature tissues of almond cultivars, the growth of cultures on NAM was compared to that on Murashige and Skoog medium (MS), Woody Plant Medium …

Predictors Of The Number Of Under-Five Malnourished Children In Bangladesh: Application Of The Generalized Poisson Regression Model, Mohammad Mafijul Islam, Morshed Alam, Md Tariquzaman, Mohammad Alamgir Kabir, Rokhsona Pervin, Munni Begum, Md Mobarak Hossain Khan

Journal Articles: Biostatistics

BACKGROUND: Malnutrition is one of the principal causes of child mortality in developing countries including Bangladesh. According to our knowledge, most of the available studies, that addressed the issue of malnutrition among under-five children, considered the categorical (dichotomous/polychotomous) outcome variables and applied logistic regression (binary/multinomial) to find their predictors. In this study malnutrition variable (i.e. outcome) is defined as the number of under-five malnourished children in a family, which is a non-negative count variable. The purposes of the study are (i) to demonstrate the applicability of the generalized Poisson regression (GPR) model as an alternative of other statistical methods and …

In Denial: The Role Of Law In Preparing For Death, Barbara A. Noah Jan 2013

In Denial: The Role Of Law In Preparing For Death, Barbara A. Noah

Faculty Scholarship

Only approximately 20% of Americans have engaged in any form of advance care planning and, even among older Americans, the process frequently is delayed until an acute illness provides sufficient pressure to act. End of life law, though flawed, offers some opportunity to express individual values and preferences via advance directives of various kinds in order to prepare for death before it is imminent. Yet many people avoid making these preparations because the thought of death is uncomfortable to confront. This Article considers the utility of existing law in preventing and resolving end of life disputes and avoiding over-utilization of …
