Safe Sex As Patriotic Ideograph In Wartime Std Prevention Campaigns, Jessica Ann Johnson Jan 2013

Safe Sex As Patriotic Ideograph In Wartime Std Prevention Campaigns, Jessica Ann Johnson

Master's Theses

Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are a problem that has afflicted people in the USA for centuries. Health communication and mass communication scholars have attempted to determine the effectiveness of STD prevention campaigns. It is crucial for scholars to take into account the persuasiveness of these campaigns and beliefs that become significant to these campaigns.

This rhetorical history examines how acted as a patriotic ideograph in World War I and II STD prevention campaigns. A history of war and knowledge associated with STDs gives readers a broad overview of the cultural aspects that are a part of the context of this …

Effects Of Site Characteristics, Pinyon-Juniper Management, And Precipitation On Habitat Quality For Mule Deer In New Mexico, Louis C. Bender, Jon C. Boren, Heather Halbritter, Shad Cox Jan 2013

Effects Of Site Characteristics, Pinyon-Juniper Management, And Precipitation On Habitat Quality For Mule Deer In New Mexico, Louis C. Bender, Jon C. Boren, Heather Halbritter, Shad Cox

Human–Wildlife Interactions

Wildlife enterprises are increasingly important to ranch income in the western United States. Habitat management practices that facilitate wildlife are needed for optimal management of multiple-use ranches, particularly for economically important species, such as mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus), that are declining throughout much of their range. We tested the effects of vegetation cover type, site characteristics, pinyon-juniper management treatments, and precipitation on body condition and size of spring-summer-autumn (SSA) home ranges of mule deer to assess habitat quality on the Corona Range and Livestock Research Center (CRLRC), a multiple-use research ranch in east central New Mexico. Accrual of …

A Survey Of Journalism Schools' Online Publication Of Student Content, Sarah E. Moore

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Journalism in the digital age has changed dramatically as the needs and demands of journalism consumers have changed. In turn, the institutions preparing journalists to enter the field must adapt their methods. How can a school of journalism effectively integrate the web into their daily practices and equip students for post-graduation employment through the publication of an online magazine? This paper explores the broadly divergent methods and philosophies of three journalism schools and offers suggestions for schools developing their own online publication based on these observations.

Physician Assisted Suicide: Debunking The Myths Surrounding The Elderly, Poor And Disabled, Anne Marie Su Jan 2013

Physician Assisted Suicide: Debunking The Myths Surrounding The Elderly, Poor And Disabled, Anne Marie Su

UC Law Journal of Race and Economic Justice

In most states, patients with terminal, painful, and debilitating conditions have no means of ending their suffering except by waiting to die. As interest in physician assisted suicide began to grow in this country, the Supreme Court in a series of decisions expressed fear that recognition of a right to die would lead to abuses. For example, disability rights activists in particular argue that it would encourage burdened family members to pressure disabled persons to end their lives. Evidence from the two states that have legalized physician assisted suicide, however, should lay these fears to rest.

This note opens with …

Planting People, Growing Justice: The Three Pillars Of New Social Justice Lawyering, Artika R. Tyner Jan 2013

Planting People, Growing Justice: The Three Pillars Of New Social Justice Lawyering, Artika R. Tyner

UC Law Journal of Race and Economic Justice

To accomplish meaningful social change, lawyers must move beyond their traditional role as mediaries between clients and the justice system and work collaboratively with marginalized communities. Lawyers should stand as leaders to help underprivileged people obtain the basic necessities of life and dignity. To that end, Dr. Tyner introduces three pillars of new social justice lawyering: social justice lawyering, leadership, and public policy advocacy.

This essay opens with a survey of several theoretical approaches to social justice lawyering. It moves on to examine how lawyers can serve as leaders. Finally, the article explores ways in which lawyers can serve as …

Rape By The System: The Existence And Effects Of Sexual Abuse Of Women In United States Prisons, Samiera Saliba Jan 2013

Rape By The System: The Existence And Effects Of Sexual Abuse Of Women In United States Prisons, Samiera Saliba

UC Law Journal of Race and Economic Justice

For thousands of women incarcerated in U.S. prisons, punishment has come to include sexual abuse by male prison guards. Twenty-five percent of women inside prison report such abuse, and that number likely falls short of the true figure. Nonetheless, the majority of guards in women's prisons continue to be male.

This note first explores the reasons for the prevalence of sexual abuse in women's prisons. It moves on to the effect of this abuse on women inside and on their communities. The note also surveys the legal barriers that prevent abused women inside from seeking redress. Finally, the note proposes …

The Affordable Care Act And Beyond: Opportunities For Advancing Health Equity And Social Justice, Rene Bowser Jan 2013

The Affordable Care Act And Beyond: Opportunities For Advancing Health Equity And Social Justice, Rene Bowser

UC Law Journal of Race and Economic Justice

In 2010, the most monumental health care legislation in forty-five years was enacted. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act ("ACA") makes changes great and small in virtually every important component of the American health care system. The new law's implications will not be known fully for many years because state governments and federal agencies are in the process of interpreting key provisions, drafting rules and devising general implementation strategies. And, uncertainty exists about the scope of the ACA because of the recent Supreme Court ruling in National Federal of Independent Business v. Sebelius. The court upheld nearly all of …

The Role Of Ectomycorrhizal Fungi On Fertilized And Unfertilized Nursery Grown White Spruce, Alistair James Henry Smith Ii Jan 2013

The Role Of Ectomycorrhizal Fungi On Fertilized And Unfertilized Nursery Grown White Spruce, Alistair James Henry Smith Ii

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Nursery grown seedlings are an essential part of the forestry industry. These seedlings are grown under high nutrient conditions caused by fertilization. Though grown in a controlled environment, symbionts such as ectomycorrhizal fungi (EcMF) are often found in these conditions. To examine the effects of EcMF in these conditions, colonized Picea glauca seedlings were collected from Toumey Nursery in Watersmeet, MI. After collection, the EcMF present were morphotyped, and seedlings with different morphotypes were divided equally into two treatment types- fertilized and unfertilized. Seedlings received treatment for one growing season. After that time, seedlings were collected, ectomycorrhizas identified using morphotyping …

The Journey Of Addiction: Barriers To And Facilitators Of Drug Use Cessation Among Street Children And Youths In Western Kenya, Lonnie Embleton, Lukoye Atwoli, David Ayuku, Paula Braitstein

Internal Medicine, East Africa

This mixed-methods study examined barriers to and facilitators of street children’s drug use cessation in Eldoret, Kenya utilizing a cross-sectional survey and focus group discussions with a community-based sample of street-involved children and youth. The primary objective of this study was to describe factors that may assist or impede cessation of drug use that can be utilized in developing substance use interventions for this marginalized population. In 2011, 146 children and youth ages 10–19 years, classified as either children on the street or children of the street were recruited to participate in the cross-sectional survey. Of the 146 children that …

Predictors Of Successful Weight Loss Following Bariatric Surgery, Francine R. Broder Jan 2013

Predictors Of Successful Weight Loss Following Bariatric Surgery, Francine R. Broder

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

Obesity is a major public health problem involving both medical and quality-of-life
issues. During the past 20 years, obesity has dramatically increased and is currently at an all-time high (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2011). More than two thirds of the adult population in the United States is estimated to be overweight, with over one third of the population classified as obese (National Institute of Health, 2009). While attempting to lose weight is common, calorie reduction combined with physical activity typically results in 5 to 10 % reduction of body weight over a 6-month period, yet these moderate losses …

China’S Musical Revolution: From Beijing Opera To Yangbanxi, Yawen Ludden Jan 2013

China’S Musical Revolution: From Beijing Opera To Yangbanxi, Yawen Ludden

Theses and Dissertations--Music

This study seeks to investigate the modern derivative of Beijing opera, known as yangbanxi, through macro and micro approaches. The first part of the thesis surveys the development of Beijing opera under the historical context and in its social, political, and cultural perspectives. The second part, taking a microscopic perspective, undertakes an in-depth analysis of the compositions that were solely created by composer Yu Huiyong. First, it assays the application of Yu’s theory to his compositions of various Beijing opera arias. Second, it analyzes Yu’s instrumental music in compositional dimensions such as material, structure, and techniques, considering the larger implications …

The Physiology Of Invasive Plants In Low-Resource Environments, Jennifer L. Funk Jan 2013

The Physiology Of Invasive Plants In Low-Resource Environments, Jennifer L. Funk

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

While invasive plant species primarily occur in disturbed, high-resource environments, many species have invaded ecosystems characterized by low nutrient, water, and light availability. Species adapted to low-resource systems often display traits associated with resource conservation, such as slow growth, high tissue longevity, and resource-use efficiency. This contrasts with our general understanding of invasive species physiology derived primarily from studies in high-resource environments. These studies suggest that invasive species succeed through high resource acquisition. This review examines physiological and morphological traits of native and invasive species in low-resource environments. Existing data support the idea that species invading low-resource environments possess traits …

Crew Training Requirements For Long Duration Missions, Ann Wargetz Jan 2013

Crew Training Requirements For Long Duration Missions, Ann Wargetz

Theses and Dissertations

After reviewing the journals of astronauts, cosmonauts, and others who lived and worked in confinement, a new pre-mission training approach for missions in confinement was developed. This new training approach is founded on the idea that conflicts in confinement often arise due to humanity's propensity to focus on how others behave rather than our own behavior. After reviewing the stresses experienced during spaceflight and astronaut training and selection methods, a survey was written and distributed to researchers with experience living and working in confined environments. The questions sought to discover whether conflicts arise for these reasons based on the participant's …

Consequences Of Mycorrhizal Colonization For Piriqueta Morphotypes Under Drought Stress, Paul Sochacki, Jennifer Rhode Ward, Mitchell B. Cruzan Jan 2013

Consequences Of Mycorrhizal Colonization For Piriqueta Morphotypes Under Drought Stress, Paul Sochacki, Jennifer Rhode Ward, Mitchell B. Cruzan

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Field and greenhouse studies have shown that arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) can improve plant growth in environments with restricted water availability. The benefits of AMF symbiosis vary among plant species, but the extent to which AMF-mediated drought tolerance varies among subspecific taxa remains poorly understood. In this study, we examine differences in AMF response among three recently diverged, ecologically heterogeneous plant taxa (morphotypes) within the Piriqueta cistoides spp. caroliniana complex. We performed a greenhouse experiment using cuttings of each morphotype inoculated in field-collected soil to test for inoculum source effects of AMF on plant growth under drought. Correlation between AMF …

An Ethical Justification Of Weight Loss Surgery, Amy Marie Vandyke Jan 2013

An Ethical Justification Of Weight Loss Surgery, Amy Marie Vandyke

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation provides an ethical justification of surgical weight loss interventions for the treatment of obesity. Situating obesity as not merely a public health concern but also fundamentally a problem of clinical medicine confronting individual patients and physicians, the dissertation argues that the time frame of public health interventions is too long for individuals presently facing obesity and its deleterious physical and social co-morbidities. It argues that failure to address weight loss on an individual level, and specifically to consider the clinical appropriateness of weight loss surgery (WLS), raises serious questions about failure to respect autonomy and promote patient welfare. …

Somewhat Damaged And Interrogating The Incubus : Sleep Paralysis Explored In The Young Adult Novel, 'Somewhat Damaged', Lauren Payne Jan 2013

Somewhat Damaged And Interrogating The Incubus : Sleep Paralysis Explored In The Young Adult Novel, 'Somewhat Damaged', Lauren Payne

Theses : Honours

This thesis, comprising an excerpt from my young adult paranormal novel ‘Somewhat Damaged’ and an essay, examines the mythic potential of sleep paralysis, a paralytic transitory state between sleep and consciousness during which frightening hallucinations are projected onto the waking environment. While the neurophysiology is generally agreed upon, further investigation is warranted on the anomalous phenomena that manifests during sleep paralysis hallucinations. Within the theoretical framework of psychoanalysis, particularly Carl Jung’s collective unconscious theory (1959), I will imaginatively explore the recurring figure of the ‘incubus’ of sleep paralysis that has provoked ubiquitous fear and ambiguity. The essay will describe the …
