Research outputs 2013

Environmental factors such as stress, anxiety and depression are important to consider with the global increase in chronic diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, cancer, stroke, obesity, diabetes and neurodegenerative diseases. Brain metabolic diseases associated with conditions such as obesity and diabetes require early intervention with diet, lifestyle and drug therapy to prevent diseases to various organs such as the liver with non alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and other organs such as the heart, lungs thyroid, pancreas, brain, kidneys and reproductive systems. Behavioural stress and the molecular mechanisms that are involved in neuroendocrine diseases such as insulin resistance in obesity …

Review Of Ear Health And Hearing Among Indigenous Australians, Jane F. Burns, Neil J. Thomson Jan 2013

Review Of Ear Health And Hearing Among Indigenous Australians, Jane F. Burns, Neil J. Thomson

Research outputs 2013

Indigenous Australians experience some of the highest levels of ear disease and hearing loss in the world, with rates up to ten times more than those for non-Indigenous Australians [4]. Children and adolescents are particularly vulnerable to ear infections. The most common ear disease among Indigenous children is otitis media (OM), which is inflammation/infection of the middle ear typically caused by bacterial and viral pathogens. Indigenous children living in urban, rural and, particularly, remote areas, are more likely than their non-Indigenous counterparts to have OM at younger ages, more often, at a greater level of severity, and with more likelihood …

Patient Perceptions Of Patient-Empowering Nurse Behaviors, Patient Activation, And Functional Health Status After Surgery, Teresa Arline Jerofke

Dissertations (1934 -)

PATIENT PERCEPTIONS OF PATIENT-EMPOWERING NURSE BEHAVIORS, PATIENT ACTIVATION, AND FUNCTIONAL HEALTH STATUS

AFTER SURGERY

Teresa A. Jerofke, BSN, MSN, APNP-BC

Marquette University, 2013

Patient empowerment has been advocated as a way to engage patients in self-management of chronic illnesses in emerging patient-centered models for healthcare improvement. The majority of research on patient empowerment has studied empowerment as an outcome in outpatient settings, with little attention to provider processes used to empower patients during a hospitalization. Post-operative patients with life-threatening chronic illnesses face multiple illness-related transitions associated with the recovery from their surgery and taking on the role of managing their …

Resilience In Quaking Aspen: Recent Advances And Future Needs, Paul C. Rogers, C. Eisenberg, S. Clair Jan 2013

Resilience In Quaking Aspen: Recent Advances And Future Needs, Paul C. Rogers, C. Eisenberg, S. Clair

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

Quaking Aspen (Populus tremuloides) sustainability is a topic of intense interest in forest ecology. Reports range from declines to persisting or increasing coverage in some areas. Moreover, there is little agreement on ultimate factors driving changes. Low aspen recruitment has been attributed to climate patterns, past management, herbivore increases, competitive interactions with conifers, predator and beaver extirpation, and livestock grazing. Several of these potential causes result from direct or indirect actions of human agency. On June 27–28, 2012 a group of leading aspen ecologists from diverse backgrounds convened at the High Lonesome Ranch in western Colorado to address the state …

Effects Of Varying Levels Of Caclium Lignosulfonate, Mixer-Added Fat And Feed Form On Feed Manufacture And Broiler Performance, Alina M. Corey Jan 2013

Effects Of Varying Levels Of Caclium Lignosulfonate, Mixer-Added Fat And Feed Form On Feed Manufacture And Broiler Performance, Alina M. Corey

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Feed manufacture accounts for approximately 60--70% of the costs required for commercial broiler chicken production. Increased costs resulting from manufacturing high quality pellets can be problematic for commercial poultry production. However, these costs can be justified by improved broiler performance attributed to high quality pellets. In Experiment 1 pellets were manufactured by utilizing varying levels of a commercial Calcium lignosulfonate (CaLS) pellet binder inclusion (0, 0.5, or 1%), mixer-added fat (MAF) (1 or 3%), and feed form (pellet or ground pellet) in order to create 12 dietary treatments. In Experiment 2 diets were fed and broiler performance and digesta viscosity …

News In Cyberspace: The Creation Of The New Ignorance, Ronald Charles Griffin Jan 2013

News In Cyberspace: The Creation Of The New Ignorance, Ronald Charles Griffin

Journal Publications

Computers are dummying us down. Book learning has given way to computer speak. Modern technology overwhelms us. Users are enthralled with gadgets to the point where they have lost themselves in them. We have abandoned, perhaps mislaid, our sense for ignorance; what it means to be illiterate in the 21st century; and working definitions for truth. In this environment a dab of education (enough to make somebody lethal), a sprinkle of bigotry, and fear produce people with ideas that are bad for us. This essay cautions against trucking with those folk; it marks what they do in the media that …

Prudential Standing, The Zone Of Interests, And The New Jurisprudence Of Jurisdiction, Micah J. Revell Jan 2013

Prudential Standing, The Zone Of Interests, And The New Jurisprudence Of Jurisdiction, Micah J. Revell

Emory Law Journal

Threshold limitations on the availability of judicial review are ubiquitous in the modern federal court system. While many are fact-specific and malleable, the most foundational one, jurisdiction, is not. The D.C. Circuit recently held that prudential standing, specifically the zone of interests test, is a jurisdictional limitation on the court's power to decide a case. This holding directly contradicts several other circuits, which have held that prudential standing is not jurisdictional and may be waived when the parties fail to raise it. Twenty years ago, this decision likely would not have garnered much attention because jurisdictional dismissals were common for …

Application Of Pcr-Rflp Technique To Determine Booroola Gene Polymorphism In The Sangsari Sheep Breed Of Iran, Reza Jamshidi, Mohammad Mahdi Kasirian, Ghodrat Allah Rahimi

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Phenotypic evaluation and the culling of candidate animals for traits by applying traditional animal breeding are usually costly tasks, which need to be carried out over a considerable span of time. The use of molecular genetics as an alternative method enables animal breeders to select eligible animals for the desirable trait, or traits, at earlier ages. Selection based upon markers could result in increased accuracy as well as a better selection response of animals. The Booroola gene has long been recognized as a candidate gene responsible for a higher rate of ewe ovulation, which results in increased litter size. In …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Increased lipid peroxidation due to reactive oxygen species (ROS)-induced oxidative stress has been demonstrated in the neoplastic mammary tissue of dogs with malignant mammary tumors. Dietary factors implicated in ROS production may influence mammary cancer incidence or prognosis. Balanced diets (as commercial dog food is considered) may be more protective against oxidative damage than homemade diets. The purpose of this preliminary study was to compare the extent of lipid peroxidation, as evidenced by thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS) and \alpha-tocopherol concentration in the neoplastic mammary tissue, among dogs with mammary cancer fed with different kinds of diet (commercial or homemade). Eighteen …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

This study was conducted to investigate the performance, carcass characteristics, and meat quality of lambs fed barley/triticale silage treated with/without inoculant and enzyme mixture-based diets with similar barley supplementation. Thirty Tahirova × Sakız crossbred weaned ram lambs (mean body weight: 34 ± 0.5 kg) were used in this study. Lambs were randomly divided into groups of 3 and fed the respective diets. These 3 diets were: 1) hay grass + barley, 2) triticale/barley silage + barley, and 3) triticale/barley silage with inoculants and enzyme mixture + barley. There were significant differences among groups in daily live weight gain (P < 0.001). Cold carcass weight and dressing percentage based on empty body weight and carcass conformation scores were not significantly different among groups, but fatness scores and proportion of omental and mesenteric fat were significantly affected by diet (P < 0.05). No differences were found in terms of meat lightness (L*), redness (a*), and yellowness (b*) values for M. longissimus thoracis muscle. However, silage-fed lambs in both groups had higher shear force values than hay-fed lambs in the current study (P < 0.05). It can be concluded that barley/triticale silages offered with concentrate had no unfavorable effect on lamb performance, carcass characteristics, and meat quality.
