The Amino Acid Permeases Aap3 And Aap6 Are Involved In Root-Knot Nematode Parasitism Of Arabidopsis, Heather H. Marella, Erik Nielsen, Daniel P. Schachtman, Christopher G. Taylor
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
The root-knot nematode, Meloidogyne incognita, is an obligate parasite which depends entirely on the host plant for its nutrition. Root-knot nematodes induce the formation of a highly specialized feeding site consisting of several giant cells surrounded by a network of vascular tissues. Nutrients, including amino acids and sugars, are transferred apoplastically from the vascular tissues to the feeding site. Using Arabidopsis thaliana lacking the vascular-expressed amino acid permeases (AAP) AAP3 or AAP6, we demonstrate that disruption of amino acid transport can affect nematode parasitism. Nematode infestation levels are significantly reduced on the aap3 and aap6 mutants. AAP3 and AAP6 …

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
An experiment was conducted to determine the effects of feeding two commercially available direct-fed microbials (DFM) on finishing steer performance fed steam-flaked corn based diets. Dietary treatments included a control diet without DFM, and two commercially available products (10-G and Bovamine). No significant differences were observed among treatments for animal performance or carcass characteristics. However, numeric advantages were observed for ADG and feed efficiency when cattle were fed a DFM.

Effects Of Feeding 44 G/Ton Rumensin® During Grain Adaptation On Animal Performance And Carcass Characteristics, Cody J. Schneider, Matt K. Luebbe, Karla Jenkins Jenkins, Stephanie A. Furman, Galen E. Erickson
Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
Cattle were adapted to a finishing diet over 20 days while feeding 33 or 44 g/ton (DM) of Rumensin. Following grain adaptation, all cattle were fed a common finishing diet containing 33 g/ton Rumensin for the remainder of the feeding period. Feeding 44 g/ton of Rumensin during the adaptation period did not affect performance during the adaptation period or over the entire feeding period when compared to the 33 g/ton adaptation level.

Calves backgrounded in a forage-based system at a high winter supple- mentation level maintained a performance advantage through finishing. High level supplemented cattle gained an additional 0.2 lb. daily during finishing, consumed less total feed in the feedlot, required fewer days on feed to reach a common finish point and produced an additional 85 lb. of saleable live weight compared to cattle backgrounded at a low supplementation level. High level supplemented cattle returned $56.01 more than cattle fed a low level of supplementation during the winter backgrounding phase.
Unleashing The Potential Of The Root Hair Cell As A Single Plant Cell Type Model In Root Systems Biology, Zhenzhen Qiao, Marc Libault
Unleashing The Potential Of The Root Hair Cell As A Single Plant Cell Type Model In Root Systems Biology, Zhenzhen Qiao, Marc Libault
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
Plant root is an organ composed of multiple cell types with different functions. This multicellular complexity limits our understanding of root biology because -omics studies performed at the level of the entire root reflect the average responses of all cells composing the organ. To overcome this difficulty and allow a more comprehensive understanding of root cell biology, an approach is needed that would focus on one single cell type in the plant root. Because of its biological functions (i.e., uptake of water and various nutrients; primary site of infection by nitrogen-fixing bacteria in legumes), the root hair cell is an attractive …

The aim of the present study was to investigate the associations of iron depletion (ID) with menstrual blood losses, lifestyle, and dietary habits, in pubertal girls. The study sample comprised 1222 girls aged 9-13 years old. Biochemical, anthropometrical, dietary, clinical, and physical activity data were collected. Out of 274 adolescent girls with menses, 33.5% were found to be iron depleted (defined as serum ferritin < 12 g/L) compared to 15.9% out of 948 girls without menses. Iron-depleted girls without menses were found to have lower consumption of poultry (P = 0.017) and higher consumption of fruits (P = 0.044) and fast food (P = 0.041) compared to their peers having normal iron status. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that girls with menses were 2.57 (95% CI: 1.37, 4.81) times more likely of being iron depleted compared to girls with no menses. Iron depletion was found to be associated with high calcium intake, high consumption of fast foods, and low consumption of poultry and fruits. Menses was the only factor that was found to significantly increase the likelihood of ID in these girls. More future research is probably needed in order to better understand the role of diet and menses in iron depletion. © 2013 George Moschonis et al.
Marr Family Transcriptional Regulators From Streptomyces Coelicolor, Hao Huang
Marr Family Transcriptional Regulators From Streptomyces Coelicolor, Hao Huang
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
A family of transcriptional regulators that ubiquitously exists in prokaryotes is the multiple antibiotic resistance regulator (MarR) family. These transcriptional regulators participate in many cellular processes and can provide valuable knowledge about transcriptional regulation in response to specific conditions. The closely related MarR homologs TamR (trans-aconitate methyltransferase regulator) and PecS in Streptomyces coelicolor were studied to investigate their potential role in this bacterium. In Streptomyces coelicolor, the gene (SCO3133), which encodes TamR, is oriented divergently from the tam gene, which encodes trans-aconitate methyltransferase. TamR was found to regulate several target genes, which encode several enzymes closely related to the citric …

Essays On The Impact Of Income On Family And Child Well-Being, Christian Werner Raschke
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
In this dissertation I offer three independent studies that each contribute to the literature on the impact of income on family and child well-being. I present three essays that investigate three different contexts and sources of income variation. First, I investigate the extent to which an unconditional cash transfer to families in Germany that is intended to benefit children actually translates into an improvement in the circumstances related to child well-being. Next, I analyze how shocks to mothers’ earnings impact their demand for health inputs during pregnancy, and how this affects the health of the newborn child. The fourth chapter …
Effect Of Bitterness Blockers And Salt Substitutes On The Quality Of Low Sodium White Cheddar Cheese, Kennet Mariano Carabante
Effect Of Bitterness Blockers And Salt Substitutes On The Quality Of Low Sodium White Cheddar Cheese, Kennet Mariano Carabante
LSU Master's Theses
Reducing added salt in processed foods is one of the major challenges facing food industry worldwide. Salt (NaCl) replacement in a Cheddar cheese has been successfully achieved up to 25%, which qualifies it as “reduced sodium”. However, a low sodium cheddar cheese (less than 140 mg Na/ 50 g cheese) requires at least 50% of salt reduction. Bitterness is one obstacle for development of an acceptable low sodium cheddar cheese. In this study, sensory optimization of low sodium white cheddar cheese was performed. A 3-component mixture design was used: NaCl (30-60%), KCl (45-65%) and glycine (5-10%). A fixed level of …

Transport And Adsorption-Desorption Of Heavy Metals In Different Soils, Tamer A. Elbana
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Understanding the reactivity and mobility of heavy metals in soils is indispensable for assessing their potential risk to the environment. In this study, column transport and batch kinetic experiments were performed to assess the sorption-desorption and mobility of Cd, Cu, Pb, and Sn in alkaline and acidic soils. Furthermore, sequential extractions were accomplished to examine their behavior in soils. Also, the competitive reactivity of Sn and Pb in two acidic soils was quantified. Additionally, the effect of introducing Cd and Cu after a Pb pulse in calcareous soil was presented. Modeling of these heavy metals retention and transport was carried …

Language Of Exclusion: A Mixed Method Evaluation Of Text Complexity On Comprehension Within Selected U.S. Government Food Assistance Application Materials, Leah Katherine Saal
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
After over 60 years of plain writing advocacy calling for government agencies to increase the clarity of official communication, the Plain Writing Act (PWA) of 2010 codified the incorporation of plain language in any federal government document for pubic use. However, no extensive evaluation of government food assistance applications has been completed by an independent evaluator since the PWA’s passage. The objective of this exploratory sequential mixed methods research is to examine selected federal government food assistance applications (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Application (SNAP) for Assistance and Free and Reduced Price School Meals Family Application). The study seeks to explore …
Role Of Retrotransposons As A Major Source Of Intra- And Inter-Individual Epigenetic Variations In The Mammalian Genome, Muhammad Badre Ekram
Role Of Retrotransposons As A Major Source Of Intra- And Inter-Individual Epigenetic Variations In The Mammalian Genome, Muhammad Badre Ekram
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Transcription of retrotransposons is usually repressed by DNA methylation, but a few elements partially escape this repression mechanism. I used two approaches as my dissertation study to identify unmethylated intracisternal A-particles (IAPs) and also to understand why some of IAPs escape DNA methylation-mediated repression. Firstly, I sought to catalog the retrotransposons (LTRs and LINEs only) in the mouse genome known as ‘epialleles’ which escape the repression variably even in individuals with an identical genome sequence. Using bioinformatic approaches, 143 candidate epialleles were first identified based on their promoter activity and association with active histone modification marks. Detailed methylation analyses suggested …

Lifestyle Factors And Risk Of Heart Failure: A Prospective Cohort Study, Yujie Wang
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Heart failure (HF) has become a major health problem with its high prevalence, poor clinical outcomes, and large health-care costs. Compared with medical intervention, the prevention of HF through lifestyle approaches is free of side effect. Therefore, the prevention of HF through lifestyle approaches is of special interest. In this project, we aim to investigate 1) the association of different levels of occupational, commuting and leisure-time physical activity with HF risk; 2) the association of coffee consumption with HF risk; 3) the role of lifestyle factors in explaining the risk of HF; and 4) the association between antihypertensive drug treatment …
Examining Neotropical Primate Community Structure At Regional And Local Scales : Insights From Taxonomic And Phylogenetic Approaches, Maria Mercedes Gavilanez
Examining Neotropical Primate Community Structure At Regional And Local Scales : Insights From Taxonomic And Phylogenetic Approaches, Maria Mercedes Gavilanez
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Understanding mechanisms underlying distribution of biodiversity remains a central issue in ecology. I integrate ecological and phylogenetic information at multiple spatial scales to better understand neotropical primate distribution and community structure. I investigate the variation within species ranges in relation to species richness and patterns of species relatedness. Results suggest positive associations among species throughout their distributions, whereby species tend to present higher richness within their ranges than average richness for the entire taxon. However, comparing empirical distributions to a null model of range cohesion suggests mechanisms other than dispersal are setting a limit to the number of species capable …
Optimizing Yield And Crop Nitrogen Response Characterization By Integrating Spectral Reflectance And Agronomic Properties In Sugarcane And Rice, Yumiko Kanke
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Nitrogen (N) is one of the most important and limiting nutrients in crop production. The best management practices for N fertilization is always challenging due to its dynamic system in the nature. Remote sensing has emerged as one of the most useful technologies in modern agriculture for non-invasive monitoring of plant N status. The objectives of this research were to 1) determine the effect of water background turbidity and depth on red and red-edge reflectance based prediction models for biomass and grain yield in rice, 2) evaluate agronomic parameters of different sugar cane varieties in response to variable levels of …
Nonprofit Organizations In The Making Of Civic Community : Exploring How The Structure Of Nonprofit Sectors Matters For Community Wellbeing, Sarah Prater Walsh
Nonprofit Organizations In The Making Of Civic Community : Exploring How The Structure Of Nonprofit Sectors Matters For Community Wellbeing, Sarah Prater Walsh
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
In this dissertation, through the lens of the civic community perspective, I examine the role of nonprofit organizations in enhancing community wellbeing. The primary contribution of this dissertation to existing literature on civic communities is the theoretical development of the concept of civically engaging institutions. I take a multifaceted approach to the understanding and investigation of civically engaged institutions, in which I expand the concept beyond civic congregations and associations, to include all organizations categorized as nonprofit. Synthesizing literatures on nonprofit organizations and civic communities, I argue that nonprofits can be considered locally oriented and civically engaged as they are …
Psychological Biases Affect Hedonic Ratings, Wannita Jirangrat
Psychological Biases Affect Hedonic Ratings, Wannita Jirangrat
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Psychological biases in consumer testing may lead to misinterpretation of results and lower experimental power. Reports on various hedonic scales associated with psychological biases induced by sample presentation are limited in the literature. An appropriate experimental protocol could enable sensory scientists to accurately determine if a product is more or less liked. Overall, in this study some drawbacks of hedonic scales were revealed and some recommendations were made under specific circumstances. A more powerful design (SPRCBD) helped minimize positional and First Serving Order (FSO) biases in consumer tests by extracting more explained variances, resulting in decreased Type-II error in the …

Studying Mechanisms Of Ionizing Radiation Resistance In Bacteria: Evidence For Multiple Pathways, Kathiresan Selvam
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Our lab created ionizing radiation (IR) resistant populations of E. coli MG1655 through twenty cycles of exposure to IR and outgrowth. To identify the genetic alterations responsible for increased IR tolerance, a total of seven isolates from the evolved final population were re-sequenced. However, the individual isolates sequence analysis revealed wide variety of unique genomic alterations with little overlap between the seven isolates and therefore, did not reveal the clear picture of the mutations responsible for IR resistance. Our current research focused on distinguishing the relevant mutations from the non-relevant mutations that contribute to IR resistance by using two methods: …

Development Of Safe And Ready To Eat Frozen Oyster Products Using Microwave Steam-Venting Technology, Luis Alberto Espinoza
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The Gulf Coast region, principally Louisiana, leads the nation in oyster production. The National Marine Fisheries Service reported that 19.7 million pounds of oyster meat, valued at $62.3 million dollars were harvested from the Gulf Coast region in 2010. One of the main concerns for this industry is the health risk associated with the consumption of oysters, particularly for at-risk populations. Oysters are filter feeders. They tend to concentrate microbes present in surrounding waters, some of which can cause severe illness in susceptible humans. Among pathogens that contaminate the gastrointestinal system of oysters, Vibrio spp (especially V. parahaemolyticus and V. …

Development And Evaluation Of Molecular-Based Assays For Detecting Salmonella Serovars In Various Food Commodities, Qianru Yang
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
As a leading cause of foodborne illnesses and outbreaks, Salmonella poses a major public health risk in the United States and worldwide. Various food commodities including meat and poultry, eggs, and fresh produce can serve as the transmission vehicles for Salmonella infections. To better ensure the safety of these products and protect public health, rapid, accurate, and reliable detection methods for Salmonella are needed. Molecular-based methods like loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP), have gained wide applications in Salmonella detection, owning to their rapidity, specificity, and sensitivity. However, there is a paucity of data on the robustness of these assays. And very …

Molecular Dynamics Simulation Studies Of Interaction Of Amphiphilic Molecules With Lipid Bilayers, Jieqiong Lin
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
We use molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the behavior of various amphiphilic molecules in aqueous solutions in the presence of vitamin E or lipid bilayers. Our research studies focus on two molecular systems. First, we investigate the effect of DMSO on structural properties of DMPC bilayers and calculate bilayers permeability coefficients for both water and DMSO molecules at low DMSO concentration. The simulations show that the increase of DMSO concentration in solution leads to an increase of the permeability of water through the bilayers. The permeability increase might explain the unusual ability of DMSO, even at relatively low concentrations, to …
Poultry Litter Ash As A Phosphorus Source For Greenhouse Crop Production, Daniel Evan Wells
Poultry Litter Ash As A Phosphorus Source For Greenhouse Crop Production, Daniel Evan Wells
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Phosphorus (P) is an essential nutrient for all life forms, including plants, but is a limited agricultural resource whose future availability is in question. Therefore, identification of alternative forms of P fertilizers is important. Poultry litter ash (PLA), a byproduct of bioenergy production, contains high concentrations of P comparable to conventional fertilizers. Forms of P contained in PLA have been characterized as having low water solubility. Nutrient losses during containerized plant production are high due to excessive inputs of water and nutrients and low nutrient sorption capacities of common horticultural substrate components. Environmental concerns over reduced water quality intensify this …
