Evaluation Of Yield And Quality Parameters Of Phosphorous-Solubilizing And N-Fixing Bacteria Inoculated In Wheat (Triticum Aestivum L.), Sancar Bulut Jan 2013

Evaluation Of Yield And Quality Parameters Of Phosphorous-Solubilizing And N-Fixing Bacteria Inoculated In Wheat (Triticum Aestivum L.), Sancar Bulut

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Considering current agricultural practices and certain indicators, it is impossible to comment on sustainability of these practices. Chemical fertilizers are among such unsustainable practices. Because of increasing mineral fertilizer costs and negative environmental impacts of these fertilizers, the interest in biological nitrogen fixation is increasing within the scope of sustainable agriculture (without significant yield losses). Therefore, effects of phosphorus-solubilizing (Bacillus megatherium var. phosphaticum [M-13]) and nitrogen-fixing (Stenotrophomonas maltophilia [82] and Ralstonia pickettii [73]) bacteria and chemical fertilizer treatments on wheat yield and quality parameters were compared with control treatment in present study. Significant differences were observed among treatments with regard …

Utilization Of Color Parameters To Estimate Moisture Content And Nutrient Levels Of Peanut Leaves, Muharrem Keski̇n, Sema Karanlik, Serap Görücü Keski̇n, Yurtsever Soysal

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Leaf nutrient levels are traditionally quantified by laboratory chemical analysis, which is time-consuming and requires intensive labor and investment. The objective of this study was to predict the moisture content (MC) and nutrient content of peanut leaves from color parameters (CIE Lab) using a chromameter. This method is faster and requires less labor and investment compared to laboratory chemical analysis. Fifty peanut leaf samples were collected from a commercial peanut field. The samples were analyzed for MC, N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, Mn, Zn, and Cu concentrations after color parameters were acquired by chromameter. A positive and high correlation …

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Broad interest in reducing greenhouse gas emissions requires a better understanding of controls on carbon dioxide (CO_2) release under different agricultural management practices. The objective of this study was to investigate and model seasonal variation of soil CO_2 emissions from an apple orchard field (Malus domestica L. 'Starkrimson'). Soil CO_2 emissions from an apple orchard managed with common practices were measured weekly over a 3-year period (May 2008 to May 2011) from both under the crowns of trees (CO_2-UC) and between rows (CO_2-BR) using a soda lime technique and were modeled using available environmental data. The study area is located …

Treatments To Reduce The Risk Of Vibrio Species In Vitro And In Shucked Oysters, Ronson Renard Scott

LSU Master's Theses

"Vibrio parahaemolyticus" (Vp) and "Vibrio vulnificus" (Vv) are halophilic bacteria naturally occurring in estuarine environments that may concentrate in filter feeding shellfish. Consumption of raw or under-cooked seafood contaminated with Vp or Vv may lead to the development of acute gastroenteritis or fatal septicemia in at-risk individuals, respectively. This research encompassed two separate but related projects: evaluation of a low temperature pasteurization (LTP) technique for the reduction of Vp and Vv in commercial quantities of shucked oysters (SO) and the investigation of the efficacy of a citrus fruit extract, BIOSECUR® F440D in reducing/eliminating Vv in vitro. Commercially available SO ("Crassostrea …

Influence Of "Added" Whey Protein Isolate On Probiotic Properties Of Yogurt Culture Bacteria And Yogurt Characteristics, Luis Alfonso Vargas Lopez

LSU Master's Theses

Consumers are becoming conscious of their diet, increasing protein intake and avoiding carbohydrates and fats. Whey proteins have branch chain amino acids responsible for muscle building. Whey protein isolate (WPI) contains more than 90% protein. The effect of incremental addition of WPI on probiotic characteristics of pure cultures and cultures in yogurt and yogurt characteristics are not known. The hypothesis was that “added” WPI will influence the characteristics of yogurt culture bacteria in pure form and in yogurt. The objectives were: to determine the influence of added WPI on (1) acid and bile tolerance, growth and protease activity of pure …

The Use Of Duddingtonia Flagrans For Gastrointestinal Parasitic Nematode Control In Feces Of Exotic Artiodactylids At Disney's Animal Kingdom®, Jenna Terry Jan 2013

The Use Of Duddingtonia Flagrans For Gastrointestinal Parasitic Nematode Control In Feces Of Exotic Artiodactylids At Disney's Animal Kingdom®, Jenna Terry

LSU Master's Theses

Gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) are parasites of major concern for domestic and exotic ruminant species around the world. In the past, zoological facilities used anthelmintics as their primary control method. Challenges in accurate dosing and administration of anthelmintics to exotic hoofstock contributed to the development of resistant nematode populations in zoological settings. The historic dependency on anthelmintics to control GIN populations is no longer an option. Biological alternatives are urgently needed, in both exotic and domestic ruminants, in the war against resistance. One such alternative is the use of the nematophagous fungus, Duddingtonia flagrans. Three independent studies were conducted: A nine …

On Human Biological Diversity : Variation In Sexual Dimorphism Of The Skull Between African-Americans And European-Americans, Amanda Grace Kittoe

LSU Master's Theses

This study assesses sexual dimorphism of the skull in samples of African-Americans (AA) and European-Americans (EA). Morphology of the cranium is classically referenced as an indicator of sexual dimorphism in the fields of bioarchaeology and forensic anthropology. Variation in size and shape of cranial elements has been found to differ significantly between ancestral populations. Abundant research suggests that patterns of sexual dimorphism also vary between ancestries. This study uses a sample of 55 AA females, 50 AA males, 49 EA females, and 49 EA males from the Hamann-Todd Collection at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History and the WM Bass …

Agricultural Transitions In Northwestern Argentina, Kimberly Reynolds Jan 2013

Agricultural Transitions In Northwestern Argentina, Kimberly Reynolds

University Honors Theses

Worldwide, agriculture has seen a transition from small scale subsistence farming to large scale commercial operations, often associated with green revolution technologies and support by government policies and western models of economic development. Argentina with its history as a salient agricultural exporter serves as a valuable example of the agricultural transition from subsistence to commercial production. In the small town of San Pedro de Cololao, Tucuman, we studied the agricultural transitions that are taking place and analyzed the role that socioeconomic, cultural and political factors play in the shift.

Through the case studies of agricultural practices in San Pedro de …

Meat Labeling Through The Looking Glass, Bruce Friedrich Jan 2013

Meat Labeling Through The Looking Glass, Bruce Friedrich

Animal Law Review

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) regulates meat labeling under the statutory authority of the Federal Meat Inspection Act (FMIA). The FMIA’s labeling preemption clause prohibits labeling requirements beyond federal requirements, and would thus preclude state causes of action on the basis of deceptive labels that were properly approved under federal law. Through the eyes of Kat, a hypothetical consumer concerned with the origins of the meat she purchases for her family, this Article argues that consumers should be able to pursue state law claims based on fraudulent animal welfare labels on packages of meat. This is true for …

Legislation To Protect The Welfare Of Fish, Kelly Levenda Jan 2013

Legislation To Protect The Welfare Of Fish, Kelly Levenda

Animal Law Review

This Article examines the marginalization of fish under current animal welfare laws and regulations, explores the treatment of farm-raised fish during transport and slaughter, and proposes legislation and regulations in these two areas. While evidence indicates that fish are capable of experiencing pain, fear, and suffering—the traditional considerations informing concepts of animal welfare—current pre-slaughter transport and slaughter practices are completely uninformed by notions of fish welfare. Comparing the cognitive and sensory capacities of fish to other animals currently receiving animal welfare recognition through official regulation, this Article argues that protections afforded to animals during transport and slaughter should similarly apply …

Shocked, Horrified, Sickened: How Cigarettes (And The Lessons From The Tobacco Litigation) Can Take Years Off Animal-Based Food Industries, Amanda Winalski Jan 2013

Shocked, Horrified, Sickened: How Cigarettes (And The Lessons From The Tobacco Litigation) Can Take Years Off Animal-Based Food Industries, Amanda Winalski

Animal Law Review

Animal-based food industries—meat, egg, and dairy—have a history of opposing even relatively minor attempts to reduce human consumption of animal-based foods. In the face of growing evidence that eating meat, eggs, and dairy is detrimental to human health, these industries and their supporters maintain the opposite: that these foods are essential for a healthy diet and have no negative impact as normally consumed. Recognizing parallels between animal-based food industries and another industry heavily invested in maintaining the notion that its product was benign as normally consumed, this Article argues the tobacco litigation saga holds instructive lessons for combatting the current …

A Case For Patient Empowerment Through Education, Gabrielle Hatton Jan 2013

A Case For Patient Empowerment Through Education, Gabrielle Hatton

Quill & Scope

Non-communicable diseases are now the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in the United States. These non-communicable diseases are primarily influenced by sustainable health behaviors such as eating, exercise, and substance use. In order for patients to be held accountable for their health behavior, they must be properly educated on the relationship between behavior and disease prevention. The investment in primary and second-ary health education should be a top strategy in decreasing the incidence of chronic diseases and health care spending in the United States.

The High Cost Of The Nation's Current Framework For Education Federalism, Kimberly J. Robinson Jan 2013

The High Cost Of The Nation's Current Framework For Education Federalism, Kimberly J. Robinson

Law Faculty Publications

This Article will show the consistent ways that the current understanding of education federalism within the United States has hindered three of the major reform efforts to promote a more equitable distribution of educational opportunity: school desegregation, school finance litigation, and, most recently, NCLB. In exploring how education federalism has undermined these efforts, this Article adds to the understanding of other scholars who have critiqued these reforms and examined why the nation has failed to guarantee equal educational opportunity. For example, scholars have argued that the failure to undertake earnest efforts to achieve equal educational opportunity is caused by a …

Taxing Privacy, Hayes R. Holderness Jan 2013

Taxing Privacy, Hayes R. Holderness

Law Faculty Publications

In the United States, many low-income citizens are being held to a harsher standard than wealthier citizens — these low-income citizens are being asked to relinquish their privacy in order to obtain the public assistance they need, whereas wealthier individuals are not subjected to similar levels of public scrutiny for government benefits that they claim. Giving up privacy can have devastating effects on individuals’ lives — they may suffer various dignitary harms, may experience repressed abilities to express themselves, and may even be coerced into important life decisions by the government. This situation presents a unique problem to the neediest …

Determination Of Cane Berry Pomaces Benefits Through In Vitro Model For Human Colonic Fermentation, M'Famara Goita Jan 2013

Determination Of Cane Berry Pomaces Benefits Through In Vitro Model For Human Colonic Fermentation, M'Famara Goita

LSU Master's Theses

Cane berry pomaces have traditionally been considered waste products with little or no value. Yet these pomaces’ high levels of phenolic compounds such as anthocyanins, is a good source of dietary fiber. Because the pomaces are low in sugar and rich in fiber and dietary antioxidants, they have potential as food ingredients for the health food market. The pomace delivers health benefits associated with high fiber and the antioxidant polyphenolic compounds associated with whole fruits and juices without the high sugar content. Some dietary fibers are substrates for anaerobic fermentation by the microbiome in the lower gastrointestinal (GI) tract. The …
