Elements: Elementary Teachers Of Science – Building Collaborations Between Content And Pedagogy Communities, Krista Adams, Jenny Melander
Elements: Elementary Teachers Of Science – Building Collaborations Between Content And Pedagogy Communities, Krista Adams, Jenny Melander
Discipline-Based Education Research Group Speaker Series
The current UNL elementary teaching program does not include a science methods practicum in which pre‐service elementary teachers could observe and teach reformed based science lessons in the classroom setting. The science methods course was modified during Spring 2013 to address this missing component. The exploratory course engages pre‐service teachers in designing and implementing a science unit (a series of lessons) to be taught as a science club in an after school program for K – 5th grade students. In Fall 2013, the course experiences expanded to include collaborating with biomedical engineering students in connecting real‐world applications to teaching science. …

Myb10 And Myb72 Are Required For Growth Under Iron-Limiting Conditions, Christine M. Palmer, Maria N. Hindt, Holger Schmidt, Stephan Clemens, Mary Lou Guerinot

Iron is essential for photosynthesis and is often a limiting nutrient for plant productivity. Plants respond to conditions of iron deficiency by increasing transcript abundance of key genes involved in iron homeostasis, but only a few regulators of these genes have been identified. Using genome-wide expression analysis, we searched for transcription factors that are induced within 24 hours after transferring plants to iron-deficient growth conditions. Out of nearly 100 transcription factors shown to be up-regulated, we identified MYB10 and MYB72 as the most highly induced transcription factors. Here, we show that MYB10 and MYB72 are functionally redundant and are required …
Table For One, Food For Two: A Socio-Economic Perspective On American Obesity, Celestina Victoria Brunetti
Table For One, Food For Two: A Socio-Economic Perspective On American Obesity, Celestina Victoria Brunetti
Honors Theses - Providence Campus
Research indicates that obesity is linked to socio-economic factors and genetics. Both have an impact on whether a person is or becomes obese. The paper focuses on the impact of the change in food supply along with socio-economic factors, specifically access, time, and cost, and how these factors have affected the American obesity epidemic. This was assessed in part through a case study of the Smith Hill area of Providence, Rhode Island, a food desert that is comprised mainly of Americans near the poverty line, and the Wellspring La Jolla camp—a camp for overweight children from upper-middle class families. The …

Highlights From The Functional Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms Associated With Human Muscle Size And Strength Or Famuss Study, Linda S. Pescatello, Paul D. Thompson
Open Access Author Fund Awardees' Articles
The purpose of the Functional Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms Associated with Human Muscle Size and Strength study or FAMuSS was to identify genetic factors that dictated the response of health-related fitness phenotypes to resistance exercise training (RT). The phenotypes examined were baseline muscle strength and muscle, fat, and bone volume and their response to RT. FAMuSS participants were 1300 young (24 years), healthy men (42%) and women (58%) that were primarily of European-American descent. They were genotyped for ~500 polymorphisms and completed the Paffenbarger Physical Activity Questionnaire to assess energy expenditure and time spent in light, moderate, and vigorous intensity habitual …

Snap And The School Meal Programs, Judith Bartfeld
University of Kentucky Center for Poverty Research Discussion Paper Series
The Great Recession and its immediate aftermath have brought increasing attention both to food insecurity among children and to the associated food safety net. After a decade of largely stable food insecurity rates, the share of children living in food insecure households jumped by one-third between 2007 and 2008, and has remained stubbornly high since then. As of 2012, 21.6% of all children lived in food insecure households (Coleman-Jensen et al. 2013). The scope and reach of the food safety net for children has likewise grown – a response to rising need, efforts to reduce administrative and logistical barriers to …

Response Of Near-Isogenic Sorghum Lines, Differing At The P Locus For Plant Colour, To Grain Mould And Head Smut Fungi, Deanna L. Funnell-Harris, L. K. Prom, Scott E. Sattler, Jeffrey F. Pedersen
Response Of Near-Isogenic Sorghum Lines, Differing At The P Locus For Plant Colour, To Grain Mould And Head Smut Fungi, Deanna L. Funnell-Harris, L. K. Prom, Scott E. Sattler, Jeffrey F. Pedersen
Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications
Leaves and stalks of many sorghum genotypes accumulate dark red or purple pigments upon wounding while some plants, called ‘tan,’ do not. Grains with unpigmented ‘white’ pericarps grown on tan plants are more desirable for food. The hypothesis tested was that pigments in plants protected grain against the panicle diseases grain mould and head smut. Near-isogenic tan or purple plant color genotypes with white grain were planted at Lincoln and Ithaca, NE and Corpus Christi, TX. The field grown grain was plated onto semi-selective media to detect the presence of grain colonisation by mould genera Alternaria, Fusarium and Curvularia. …

This Article examines the future role of the FDA in the regulation of the dietary supplement industry. To address the role of the FDA in the twenty-first century with respect to the dietary supplement industry, Part I of this Article begins by describing the dietary supplement industry and the role of the FDA in this industry. In Part II, this Article provides a brief exposé of the tactics used by the tobacco industry to evade regulation. The purpose of Part II is to provide insight into the tobacco industry’s ability to manipulate consumers and discount scientific proof of the harmful …

Early Flowering Mutant Chia And Uses Thereof, David Hildebrand, Watchareewan Jamboonsri, Timothy Phillips
Plant and Soil Sciences Faculty Patents
The invention relates to early flowering Chia (Salvia hispanica L.) strains that are suitable for culturing in a temperate area for seed production. Mutations are introduced to wild type chia seeds. Desired mutant progeny having normal appearance and an altered flora organ development is subsequently identified.

How Medicaid Expansions And Future Community Health Center Funding Will Shape Capacity To Meet The Nation's Primary Care Needs, Leighton C. Ku, Julia Zur, Emily Jones, Peter Shin, Sara J. Rosenbaum
Geiger Gibson/RCHN Community Health Foundation Research Collaborative
A new report by Drs. L. Ku, J. Zur, E. Jones, P. Shin and S. Rosenbaum examines the impact of federal and state policy decisions on community health centers and their ability to continue providing primary care to the nation's poorest residents. The report estimates that under a worst-case scenario the nation's health centers would be forced to contract, leaving an estimated 1 million low-income people without access to health care services by 2020.

The Effect Of Cytokinin And Abscisic Acid On Iron Stress Response In Tomatoes, Mark L. Bernards, Dr. Von D. Jolley
The Effect Of Cytokinin And Abscisic Acid On Iron Stress Response In Tomatoes, Mark L. Bernards, Dr. Von D. Jolley
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Iron is an essential nutrient for healthy plant growth. Dicotyledenous plants respond to insufficient iron with a variety of mechanisms. For example, they may release hydrogen ions or exude reductants (such as caffeic acid) from the roots to acidify the rhizosphere, reduce Fe 3+ to Fe 2+ through enzymes at the root surface, and accumulate organic acids (primarily citrate) in the roots (Brown, 1978). Iron-efficient tomato T3238FER responds to iron stress signals in the roots by activating these mechanisms. Iron-inefficient T3238fer does not activate these mechanisms when subjected to iron stress.
