Background: Although obesity rates are high among Latino children, relatively few studies of parental feeding practices have examined Latino families as a separate group. Culturally-based approaches to measurement development can begin to identify parental feeding practices in specific cultural groups. This study used qualitative and quantitative methods to develop and test the Parental Feeding Practices (PFP) Questionnaire for use with Mexican American parents. Items reflected both parent’s use of control over child eating and child-centered feeding practices.
Methods: In the qualitative phase of the research, 35 Latino parents participated in focus groups. Items for the PFP were developed from focus …

Cost-Benefit Analysis Of Farmer Training In Ghanaian Cocoa Farming, Mike Norton
Cost-Benefit Analysis Of Farmer Training In Ghanaian Cocoa Farming, Mike Norton
Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal
While billions of dollars flow into low-income countries each year to ease poverty, assessing their effectiveness beyond the life of a development program proves challengin. In 2009, the World Cocoa Foundation (WCF) undertook the Cocoa Livelihoods Program (CLP) to strengthen cocoa-growing communities with training and credit programs. Using primary 2010-2011 production data collected in Ghana, this study estimates the net present value (NPV) change associated with CLP training over 50 years (two cocoa tree life cycles), assuming producers can utilize what they have learned well after the courses are completed. Applying regression analyses to determine the effect of CLP on …
A Frailty Approach For Survival Analysis With Error-Prone Covariate, Sehee Kim, Yi Li, Donna Spiegelman
A Frailty Approach For Survival Analysis With Error-Prone Covariate, Sehee Kim, Yi Li, Donna Spiegelman
The University of Michigan Department of Biostatistics Working Paper Series
This paper discovers an inherent relationship between the survival model with covariate measurement error and the frailty model. The discovery motivates our using a frailty-based estimating equation to draw inference for the proportional hazards model with error-prone covariates. Our established framework accommodates general distributional structures for the error-prone covariates, not restricted to a linear additive measurement error model or Gaussian measurement error. When the conditional distribution of the frailty given the surrogate is unknown, it is estimated through a semiparametric copula function. The proposed copula-based approach enables us to fit flexible measurement error models without the curse of dimensionality as …

Morphology, Gas Exchange, And Chlorophyll Content Of Longleaf Pine Seedlings In Response To Rooting Volume, Copper Root Pruning, And Nitrogen Supply In A Container Nursery, R. Kasten Dumroese, Shi-Jean Susana Sung, Jeremiah R. Pinto, Amy Ross-Davis, D. Andrew Scott
United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Few pine species develop a seedling grass stage; this growth phase, characterized by strong, carrot-like taproots and a stem-less nature, poses unique challenges during nursery production. Fertilization levels beyond optimum could result in excessive diameter growth that reduces seedling quality as measured by the root bound index (RBI). We grew longleaf pine (Pinus palustris), a grass stage species, in containers of four different volumes (60–336 ml) either coated with copper oxychloride or left untreated and fertilized at low, medium, or high levels of nitrogen (N). In general, N concentration of tissues rose as N rate increased, with larger …

Horticulture is a major foreign exchange earner in Kenya and provides employment to approximately 75% of the population. However, the growth of the horticultural industry is constrained by pests such as the leafminer flies, Liriomyza sativae, L. trifolii and L. huidobrensis (Diptera: Agromyzidae). These pests do not only cause damage to crops, but are also tagged as quarantine pests, resulting in export rejections, loss of export markets and consequently loss of revenue to smallholders. The management of leafminers worldwide has commonly relied on the use of chemical insecticides, but due to associated negative effects thereof, biological control using parasitoids and …
The State Of Food Insecurity In Maputo, Mozambique, Inês Raimundo, Jonathan Crush, Wade Pendleton
The State Of Food Insecurity In Maputo, Mozambique, Inês Raimundo, Jonathan Crush, Wade Pendleton
Hungry Cities Partnership
Food insecurity is a fact of life for the vast majority of households across Maputo’s poverty belt. The Maputo urban food security survey done by AFSUN as part of its baseline survey of 11 Southern African cities found that households exist in a constant state of food insecurity manifested in a lack of access to sufficient affordable food, poor dietary quality and undernutrition. Income is meagre and only those households with access to wage income have any chance of holding food insecurity at bay. With a vibrant informal food economy, Maputo’s poor are surrounded by fresh and processed food. Food …
Nutrition Care Manual, Carolyn Schubert, Amanda Hedrick
Nutrition Care Manual, Carolyn Schubert, Amanda Hedrick
Libraries
Developed by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, Nutrition Care Manual serves as an evidence-based, point-of-care tool for students, educators, and professionals. The content covers the most common nutrition issues, professional background information, treatment plans, and patient education information. However, the user interface is confusing with few paths for logical search or navigation and lacks many of the common features users expect from most electronic resources, such as permalinks or mobile viewing. While the content and flexibility meet a previously unfulfilled need in allied health resources, the interface problems hinder maximum utilization of the content quickly.

Some non-pathogenic trypanosomatids maintain a mutualistic relationship with a betaproteobacterium of the Alcaligenaceae family. Intensive nutritional exchanges have been reported between the two partners, indicating that these protozoa are excellent biological models to study metabolic co-evolution. We previously sequenced and herein investigate the entire genomes of five trypanosomatids which harbor a symbiotic bacterium (SHTs for Symbiont-Haboring Trypanosomatids) and the respective bacteria (TPEs for Trypanosomatid Proteobacterial Endosymbiont), as well as two trypanosomatids without symbionts (RTs for Regular Trypanosomatids), for the presence of genes of the classical pathways for vitamin biosynthesis. Our data show that genes …

This convergent mixed methods study examined 35 healthy, independent living individuals' (over 85 years) perceptions of their relationship with their primary health provider (PHP) and health practices. The relationship between PHP relationship perceptions and locus of control (LOC), resilience, and self-efficacy was explored through surveys and interviews. The majority indicated they visited their PHP just for preventative care; the number of PHP visits per year was significantly lower than reported for individuals over 85 by the CDC, possible reasons for this finding are provided. A positive relationship between LOC, resiliency, and self-efficacy for the oldest-old was found. Few participants indicated …

Various strategies that block malaria transmission from an infected human host to a female Anopheline mosquito that involve killing of the blood fed mosquito have been studied as a potential strategy to control malaria. These include the immunization of animal hosts with either whole homogenized blood fed mosquito midguts or their extracts. In 1939, William Trager first demonstrated anti-vector immunity by immunizing guinea pigs and rabbits with extracts of the tick Dermacentor variabilis. This immunological targeting of tick midgut antigens led to the commercial development of a vaccine against Boophilus microplus ticks licenced in 1985.This study investigated the mosquitocidal effects …

From bird flocks to fish schools and ungulate herds to insect swarms, social biological aggregations are found across the natural world. An ongoing challenge in the mathematical modeling of aggregations is to strengthen the connection between models and biological data by quantifying the rules that individuals follow. We model aggregation of the pea aphid, Acyrthosiphon pisum. Specifically, we conduct experiments to track the motion of aphids walking in a featureless circular arena in order to deduce individual-level rules. We observe that each aphid transitions stochastically between a moving and a stationary state. Moving aphids follow a correlated random walk. …
