The Effect Of Freezing As A Storage Method On Anthocyanin Concentration In Blueberries, Marin E. Plumb Jan 2013

The Effect Of Freezing As A Storage Method On Anthocyanin Concentration In Blueberries, Marin E. Plumb

Undergraduate Honors Papers

Blueberries are rich in a water-soluble class of pigments known as anthocyanins which are known antioxidants. Antioxidants help prevent many diseases by stabilizing free radicals, but are prone to losses in food during storage. The goal of this study was to test the effect of freezing as a storage method on anthocyanin concentration and antioxidant activity over time. Blueberries from Canada and Argentina were frozen for up to 5 months and periodically tested for anthocyanin concentration and antioxidant activity. Anthocyanins were extracted using a mixture of methanol, acetic acid, and water, and evaporation under vacuum. They were separated using column …

The Influence Of Growth Stage On Carcass Compositionand Factors Associated With Marbling Development In Beef Cattle, S.A. Kern, R.H. Pritchard, S.M. Scramlin, B.P. Holland, A.D. Blair, K.R. Underwood Jan 2013

The Influence Of Growth Stage On Carcass Compositionand Factors Associated With Marbling Development In Beef Cattle, S.A. Kern, R.H. Pritchard, S.M. Scramlin, B.P. Holland, A.D. Blair, K.R. Underwood

South Dakota Beef Report, 2013

There are many cellular regulatory factors that ultimately determine the intramuscular fat, or marbling content and quality of beef carcasses. Identifying factors which play a critical role in the development of intramuscular fat throughout the feeding period and determining how cattle feeders can manipulate these factors will be crucial to continue improving beef quality. Ideally, marbling must increase without excess accumulation of adipose in depots that are undesirable and economically detrimental (subcutaneous and visceral). The results of this study are novel as they show not only what cellular factors play a role in marbling development, but also how their expression …

The Influence Of Maternal Energy Status During Mid‐Gestationon Beef Offspring Carcass Characteristics And Meat Quality, D. A Mohrhauser, A.R. Taylor, K.R. Underwood, R.H. Pritchard, A.E. Wertz-Lutz, A.D. Weaver Jan 2013

The Influence Of Maternal Energy Status During Mid‐Gestationon Beef Offspring Carcass Characteristics And Meat Quality, D. A Mohrhauser, A.R. Taylor, K.R. Underwood, R.H. Pritchard, A.E. Wertz-Lutz, A.D. Weaver

South Dakota Beef Report, 2013

Research has suggested that maternal under‐nutrition may cause the development of a thrifty phenotype in the offspring, potentially resulting in greater adiposity and reduced muscle mass. These alterations in fat and muscle development could have lasting impacts on offspring growth, carcass characteristics, and meat quality. Thus, the objective of this study was to determine the influence of maternal energy status during mid‐gestation on offspring carcass characteristics and meat quality. To alter maternal energy status, cows either grazed pasture or were fed in a dry‐lot at 80% of the energy requirements for body weight maintenance during a mean period of 109 …

Variable Levels Of Atmospheric Oxygen Do Not Affect Microanatomy And Limb Bone Geometry In Alligator Mississippiensis, Susan Lee Lujan

Theses Digitization Project

Striking changes in atmospheric oxygen levels have occured since the beginning of the Phanerozic 542 million years ago. Alligators belong to a clade of vertebrates with a long evolutionary history spanning much of this variability in atmospheric oxygen. An investigation into the effects of hypoxia and hyperoxia on skeletal growth and physiology in alligators may help to reconstruct the life history of archosaurs, explain patterns in the fossil record, and broaden our understanding of the processes underlying long term success of this clade.

Local Use And Management Of Tasba (Senna Obtusifolia) In The Traditional Food System Of Sanguere Paul, North Cameroon, Mary E. Snyder

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

The purpose of this study is to examine the importance of the wild edible weed tasba (Senna obtusifolia) in Sanguéré Paul, Cameroon by examining how households use and manage the plant. This study found that local management of tasba is minimal compared to other traditional vegetables. Tasba was collected most frequently from en brousse or the communal, fallowed land which is often too degraded for traditional field crops to grow. Women subsistence farmers were closely involved with tasba as they are the ones responsible for food production within the family. Socioeconomic differences between women affects how they manage tasba and …

Phytoplankton In Virginia Lakes And Reservoirs, Harold G. Marshall

Virginia Journal of Science

This study involves a phytoplankton summer/autumn survey in 46 Virginia lakes and reservoirs during 2010-2012. A total of 307 taxa were identified which included several filamentous and colonial cyanabacteria in bloom concentrations. With the exception of one natural lake, the other sites sampled represent impoundments created decades ago, with the majority presently classified as meso- or eutrophic. Among the cyanobacteria were 6 known toxin producers (Anabaena circinalis, Anabaena spiroides, Aphanizomenon flos-aquae, Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii, Limnothrix redekei, and Microcystis aeruginosa). The study characterizes phytoplankton populations in these aging freshwater habitats taken from a large number …

Relationship Between Personality And Exercise Motivation In Weight Loss, Leanna Beth Bowles Jan 2013

Relationship Between Personality And Exercise Motivation In Weight Loss, Leanna Beth Bowles

Online Theses and Dissertations

Previous research has investigated the relationship between motivation and personality in relation to exercise participation, while the purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between these two factors in relation to weight loss. Weight and fitness scores were measured initially and at 15 month follow-up. Participants completed personality and motivation inventories at follow-up. Contrary to the hypothesis, external motivation was positively correlated with weight loss; a finding that could be due to the program design or unique to weight loss. Neuroticism was positively correlated with external motivation and negatively correlated with identified regulation. Improved fitness score was negatively …

Urban Forest Justice And The Rights To Wild Foods, Medicines, And Materials In The City, Melissa R. Poe, Rebecca J. Mclain, Marla R. Emery, Patrick T. Hurley Jan 2013

Urban Forest Justice And The Rights To Wild Foods, Medicines, And Materials In The City, Melissa R. Poe, Rebecca J. Mclain, Marla R. Emery, Patrick T. Hurley

Institute for Sustainable Solutions Publications and Presentations

Urban forests are multifunctional socio-ecological landscapes, yet some of their social benefits remain poorly understood. This paper draws on ethnographic evidence from Seattle, Washington to demonstrate that urban forests contain nontimber forest products that contribute a variety of wild foods, medicines, and materials for the wellbeing of urban residents. We show that gathering wild plants and fungi in urban forests is a persistent subsistence and livelihood practice that provides sociocultural and material benefits to city residents, and creates opportunities for connecting with nature and enhancing social ties. We suggest that an orientation toward human-nature interactions in cities that conceptualizes the …

The “Reproductive Destiny” Of Women: Constructing Women Solely As Reproductive Entities In Oral Contraceptive Medical Texts, Andrea Carson Jan 2013

The “Reproductive Destiny” Of Women: Constructing Women Solely As Reproductive Entities In Oral Contraceptive Medical Texts, Andrea Carson

Cultural Analysis and Social Theory Major Research Papers

This major research paper analyzes the representation of women and sexual reproduction in Western oral contraceptive medical texts. Drawing on previous feminist and sociological literature on the medicalization of women’s sexuality and reproduction, I suggest that these texts draw upon a particular discourse that confines/restricts the social construction of women as reproductive entities. This study is based on a discourse analysis of 10 oral contraceptive medical texts, published between 1965 and 2007. Drawing upon the theoretical frameworks of feminism and medicalization, I interrogate how womanhood and motherhood become inexplicably linked and how women are homogenised based on their reproductive capacities. …
