Journal Articles: Cellular & Integrative Physiology

Manganese superoxide dismutase, encoded by the Sod2 gene, is a ubiquitously expressed mitochondrial antioxidant enzyme that is essential for mammalian life. Mice born with constitutive genetic knockout of Sod2 do not survive the neonatal stage, which renders the longitudinal study of the biochemical and metabolic effects of Sod2 loss difficult. However, multiple studies have demonstrated that tissue-specific knockout of Sod2 in murine liver yields no observable gross pathology or injury to the mouse. We hypothesized that Sod2 loss may have sub-pathologic effects on liver biology, including the acquisition of reactive oxygen species-mediated mitochondrial DNA mutations. To evaluate this, we established …

Nearly 13 million new cancer cases and 7.6 million cancer deaths occur worldwide each year; 63% of cancer deaths occur in low and middle-income countries. A substantial portion of all cancers are attributable to carcinogenic exposures in the environment and the workplace.

The objective of this study was to develop an evidence-based global vision and strategy for the primary prevention of environmental and occupational cancer.

The study concluded that opportunities exist to revitalize comprehensive global cancer control policies by incorporating primary interventions against environmental and occupational carcinogens.

Associations Between Cadmium Exposure And Neurocognitive Test Scores In A Cross-Sectional Study Of Us Adults, Timothy Ciesielski, David C. Bellinger, Joel Schwartz, Russ Hauser, Robert O. Wright Feb 2013

Associations Between Cadmium Exposure And Neurocognitive Test Scores In A Cross-Sectional Study Of Us Adults, Timothy Ciesielski, David C. Bellinger, Joel Schwartz, Russ Hauser, Robert O. Wright

Dartmouth Scholarship

Background: Low-level environmental cadmium exposure and neurotoxicity has not been well studied in adults. Our goal was to evaluate associations between neurocognitive exam scores and a biomarker of cumulative cadmium exposure among adults in the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES III).

Methods: NHANES III is a nationally representative cross-sectional survey of the U.S. population conducted between 1988 and 1994. We analyzed data from a subset of participants, age 20–59, who participated in a computer-based neurocognitive evaluation. There were four outcome measures: the Simple Reaction Time Test (SRTT: visual motor speed), the Symbol Digit Substitution Test (SDST: attention/perception), …

Tools For Sustainability: Water Footprints, John Hannan Feb 2013

Tools For Sustainability: Water Footprints, John Hannan

Landscapes: the Journal of the International Centre for Landscape and Language

There have been significant global developments in water footprinting in the past few years and a growing adoption and application of the water footprint concept to improve water management outcomes. This article provides an overview of the principles and ideas underlying water footprints and their current status in sanctioned water dialogue and governance in Australia. Arguments are advanced as to why and how water footprint initiatives generally, and water footprint labelling of consumer products specifically, can contribute to the efficient use and sustainability of freshwater resources. The article concludes that any initiative will require both the cooperation and goodwill of …

Everywhere And Nowhere, Liana Christensen Feb 2013

Everywhere And Nowhere, Liana Christensen

Landscapes: the Journal of the International Centre for Landscape and Language

In 1788 Europeans arrived here to stay. Since then, between eighteen and twenty mammal species have been lost, depending on who‘s counting. Gone, too, are the Paradise Parrot and the Dwarf Emu. Alarmingly high numbers of animal (and plant) species hover just this side of oblivion. Not infrequently in Australia‘s natural history the first sighting of an animal by a colonial collector is followed fairly swiftly by a long disappearance. Very few come back. For the most part, expanding populations of exotic predators and feral competitors, combined with shrinking islands of natural habitats mean that the average Australian has few …

Inward Fdi In The United States And Its Policy Context, Lucyna G. Kornecki Ph.D. Feb 2013

Inward Fdi In The United States And Its Policy Context, Lucyna G. Kornecki Ph.D.

Accounting, Economics, Finance, and Information Sciences - Daytona Beach

Inward foreign direct investment (IFDI) represents an integral part of the United States (U.S.)economy, with its stock growing from US$ 83 billion in 1980 to US$ 3.5 trillion in 2011. The United States, which had earlier been primarily a home for multinational enterprises (MNEs) rather than a host for affiliates of foreign MNEs, has become a preferred host country for FDI since the 1980s. Foreign MNEs have contributed robust flows of FDI into diverse industries of the U.S. economy, and total FDI inflows reached US$ 227 billion in 2011, equivalent to 15% of global inflows, the single largest share of …

The Relationship Between Breastfeeding and Postpartum Depressive Symptoms in Women

from Ecuador, Mexico, and Puerto Rico

Jan Weingrad Smith, PhD

University of Connecticut, 2012

This study used a secondary data analysis to describe the relationship between breastfeeding and the development of postpartum depressive symptoms in a low-income cohort of women from Ecuador, Mexico, and Puerto Rico in the United States. It also explored the risk of developing postpartum depressive symptoms in low-income women from these communities regardless of their decision to breastfeed. Data were collected between 2006 and 2012 at a Federally Qualified Community Health Center Prenatal Center in New …

Every Other Row Furrow Irrigation Trial, Jason Mast Feb 2013

Every Other Row Furrow Irrigation Trial, Jason Mast

Agricultural Education and Communication

Abstract

Silage corn yields are limited by irrigation effectiveness in the Central Valley of California. This experiment was conducted to determine if silage yield would suffer after altering irrigation methods and timing. The effects of irrigation method and timing were tested on field corn [Zea mays (DKC 67-86)]. The study was carried out in Denair, California on a Whitney Rocklin sandy loam. Silage tonnage, grain yield, and plant height were compared across four treatments with three repetitions of each treatment. The treatments were every other row, the grower’s standard practice, deficit, and a control. The experiment showed that every other …

Pda, Circulation, And Over-Budget Requests: Harnessing Data To Inform Library Strategies, Antje Mays

Dacus Library Faculty Publications

This article presents the data-rich findings of an experiment with enlisting patron-driven/demand-driven acquisitions (DDA) of ebooks in two ways. The first experiment entailed comparison of DDA eBook usage against newly ordered hardcopy materials’ circulation, both overall and ebook vs. print usage within the same subject areas. Secondly, this study experimented with DDA ebooks as a backup plan for unfunded requests left over at the end of the fiscal year.

Blood Oxidative-Stress Markers During A High-Altitude Trek, Lindsey E. Miller, Graham R. Mcginnis, Brian Kliszczewicz, Dustin Slivka, Walter Hailes, John Cuddy, Charles Dumke, Brent Ruby, John C. Quindry

Integrative Physiology and Athletic Training Faculty Publications

Oxidative stress occurs as a result of altitude-induced hypobaric hypoxia and physical exercise. The effect of exercise on oxidative stress under hypobaric hypoxia is not well understood. Purpose: To determine the effect of high-altitude exercise on blood oxidative stress. Nine male participants completed a 2-d trek up and down Mt Rainer, in North America, at a peak altitude of 4,393 m. Day 1 consisted of steady-pace climbing for 6.25 hr to a final elevation of 3,000 m. The 4,393-m summit was reached on Day 2 in approximately 5 hr. Climb rest intervals varied but were consistent between participants, with approximately …
