Enacting Legislation To Identify And Treat Children With Conduct Disorders, Donald J. Barnett, Ola Barnett
Enacting Legislation To Identify And Treat Children With Conduct Disorders, Donald J. Barnett, Ola Barnett
Pepperdine Law Review
The identification of conduct disordered children, that is, those children who are susceptible to becoming delinquent, is the first necessary step that must be undertaken if society's efforts to control a spiraling crime rate are to be successful. It is the authors' underlying premise that since the traditional approaches to rehabilitation have proven ineffective, it is incumbent upon the various state legislatures to become receptive to new methods and programs designed to prevent delinquency. The distinguishing feature of these alternatives would be early intervention and treatment. Admittedly, the authors note, many of these programs are experimental and based on the …

Rats Acquire Stronger Preference For Flavors Consumed Towards The End Of A High-Fat Meal, Kevin P. Myers
Rats Acquire Stronger Preference For Flavors Consumed Towards The End Of A High-Fat Meal, Kevin P. Myers
Faculty Journal Articles
Rats learn to prefer flavors associated with postingestive effects of nutrients. The physiological signals underlying this postingestive reward are unknown. We have previously shown that rats readily learn to prefer a flavor that was consumed early in a multi-flavored meal when glucose is infused intragastrically (IG), suggesting rapid postingestive reward onset. The present experiments investigate the timing of postingestive fat reward, by providing distinctive flavors in the first and second halves of meals accompanied by IG fat infusion. Learning stronger preference for the earlier or later flavor would indicate when the rewarding postingestive effects are sensed. Rats consumed sweetened, calorically-dilute …
The Rise Of Urban Agriculture: A Cautionary Tale – No Rules, Big Problems, Matthew V. Bradshaw
The Rise Of Urban Agriculture: A Cautionary Tale – No Rules, Big Problems, Matthew V. Bradshaw
William & Mary Business Law Review
This Note identifies the underlying cause of the collapse of the family farm, namely the failed effort of the U.S. Government to save it through the institution and ongoing promulgation of the Farm Bill. Through subsidy and direct payment regimes, federal legislation has enabled large commodity producers to enjoy protection from market risk while squeezing out smaller growers. Because of growing consumer distrust in large-scale agricultural production, the urban agriculture movement and nontraditional market systems continue to grow in popularity and footprint across the United States. Many municipalities have already recognized the vast benefits that an urban agriculture regime can …

Purification And Characterization Of Acidic Protease From Aspergillus Oryzae Bcrc 30118, Li-Jung Yin, Ya-Hui Chou, Shann-Tzong Jiang
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
The acidic protease was purified from 4-day cultivation of Aspergillus oryzae BCRC 30118 by DEAE Sephacel and Sephacryl S-200 HR chromatographs. The specific activity, yield and purification fold were 117.62 kU/mg, 15.1% and 6.6, respectively. The molecular weight (M) was 41.0 kDa, while the optimal pH and temperature were 3.0 and 60°C, respectively. It was stable at pH 3.0-6.0 and 4-35°C. However, it was inhibited by Fe2+, Hg2+, Fe3+ and pepstatin A, and slightly by leupeptin and TPCK. According to substrate specificity and inhibitor study, it was a cysteine protease with activation energy of 37.5 kcal/mol. Its Km, Vmax, Kcat …

Glucosensing, Hypoglycemia, And The Brain, Candace Reno
Glucosensing, Hypoglycemia, And The Brain, Candace Reno
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
Glucose homeostasis can be peripherally and centrally mediated. Within the periphery, GLUT4 in muscle and adipose tissue is required for normal glucose homeostasis and disruption of GLUT4 translocation in these tissues leads to glucose intolerance and insulin resistance, hallmarks of Type 2 diabetes. Within the brain, specialized glucose sensing neurons regulate whole body glucose homeostasis. Unlike GLUT4's role in the periphery, brain GLUT4 regulation of glucose tolerance is not well defined. Understanding how brain glucose sensing, mediated by GLUT4, regulates glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity will aid in the development of treatment strategies to protect against the pathogenesis of diabetes. …

Neutering Dogs: Effects On Joint Disorders And Cancers In Golden Retrievers, Gretel Torres De La Riva, Benjamin L. Hart, Thomas B. Farver, Anita M. Oberbauer, Locksley L. Mcv Messam, Neil H. Willits, Lynette A. Hart
Endocrinology Collection
In contrast to European countries, the overwhelming majority of dogs in the U.S. are neutered (including spaying), usually done before one year of age. Given the importance of gonadal hormones in growth and development, this cultural contrast invites an analysis of the multiple organ systems that may be adversely affected by neutering. Using a single breed-specific dataset, the objective was to examine the variables of gender and age at the time of neutering versus leaving dogs gonadally intact, on all diseases occurring with sufficient frequency for statistical analyses. Given its popularity and vulnerability to various cancers and joint disorders, the …

The Development And Testing Of The Codependency-Overeating Model In Undergraduate Social Science Students In A Mississippi College, Denise Bynum
Dissertations
Overeating is a common eating disorder and often leads to obesity and to significant physical, emotional and social problems often warranting nursing care. The psychological and behavioral factors surrounding overeating are noted frequently in the literature, but are not emphasized in most prevention and treatment programs for overeating. Codependency has expanded beyond the chemical dependency field and describes the dysfunctional pattern of behavior of an individual in a relationship with another person or from survival in a dysfunctional family of origin. This pattern of behavior includes the neglect of personal needs, focus and dependency on others, boundary/control issues, low self-worth …

Situated at the northwest end of Santa Cruz County and occupying circa 30 square miles of sharply contrasted terrain, the Scott Creek Watershed concentrates within its geomorphological boundaries, at least 10-12% of California's flora, both native and introduced. Paradoxically, the use/abuse that the watershed has sustained over the past 140+ years, has not necessarily diminished the biodiversity and perhaps parallels the naturally disruptive but biologically energizing processes (fire, flooding, landslides and erosion), which have also been historically documented for the area for +60 years. This is an early edition of an extensive document by James A. West. Please visit the …

Missing At Random And Ignorability For Inferences About Subsets Of Parameters With Missing Data, Roderick J. Little, Sahar Zanganeh
Missing At Random And Ignorability For Inferences About Subsets Of Parameters With Missing Data, Roderick J. Little, Sahar Zanganeh
The University of Michigan Department of Biostatistics Working Paper Series
For likelihood-based inferences from data with missing values, Rubin (1976) showed that the missing data mechanism can be ignored when (a) the missing data are missing at random (MAR), in the sense that missingness does not depend on the missing values after conditioning on the observed data, and (b) the parameters of the data model and the missing-data mechanism are distinct; that is, there are no a priori ties, via parameter space restrictions or prior distributions, between the parameters of the data model and the parameters of the model for the mechanism. Rubin described (a) and (b) as the "weakest …
Meaningful Space In A Digital Age, Ben Malczewski
Meaningful Space In A Digital Age, Ben Malczewski
Online Northwest
Extracting from the ALA book The Library 2025, the author considers our relationship with our physical surroundings and objects from a multidisciplinary perspective (behavioral/neurological) and reflects on their roles in creating experience and memory, as well as inward/outward concepts of identity, self, and community. We’ll then graduate the idea to address how the library's notion of content (from analog to digital) will undergo a further evolution to "dynamic," and introduce how concepts such as "dialectal design" and the "occasioning of space" will play vital roles in capturing and projecting the essence of the Library.
