Blacks And Whites In The Cuba Have Equal Prevalence Of Hypertension: Confirmation From A New Population Survey, Pedro Ordúñez, Jay S. Kaufman, Mikhail Benet, Alain Morejon, Luis C. Silva, David A. Shoham, Richard S. Cooper
Faculty Publications
Background: The excess burden of hypertension among blacks has been a prominent feature of the heath disparities literature, and many scientists presume it to be a stable and inevitable phenomenon. The underlying causes of this disparity can only be disentangled in a setting in which the population does not experience racial stratification of socioeconomic opportunities. While such conditions of racial equality remain uncommon, they may be approximated in Cuba, a country with a persistent policy of social inclusion over the last 5 decades. Methods. We report on a 2010-2011 stratified probability sample of those aged 15-74 years from the urban …

Cns Control Of Glucose Metabolism: Response To Environmental Challenges, Deanna M. Arble, Darleen A. Sandoval
Cns Control Of Glucose Metabolism: Response To Environmental Challenges, Deanna M. Arble, Darleen A. Sandoval
Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications
Over the last 15 years, considerable work has accumulated to support the role of the CNS in regulating postprandial glucose levels. As discussed in the first section of this review, the CNS receives and integrates information from afferent neurons, circulating hormones, and postprandially generated nutrients to subsequently direct changes in glucose output by the liver and glucose uptake by peripheral tissues. The second major component of this review focuses on the effects of external pressures, including high fat diet and changes to the light:dark cycle on CNS-regulating glucose homeostasis. We also discuss the interaction between these different pressures and how …

Sex-Specific Correlations Of Individual Heterozygosity, Parasite Load, And Scalation Asymmetry In A Sexually Dichromatic Lizard, Pei-Jen L. Shaner, Ying-Ru Chen, Jhan-Wei Lin, Jason J. Kolbe, Si-Min Lin
Sex-Specific Correlations Of Individual Heterozygosity, Parasite Load, And Scalation Asymmetry In A Sexually Dichromatic Lizard, Pei-Jen L. Shaner, Ying-Ru Chen, Jhan-Wei Lin, Jason J. Kolbe, Si-Min Lin
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Heterozygosity-fitness correlations (HFCs) provide insights into the genetic bases of individual fitness variation in natural populations. However, despite decades of study, the biological significance of HFCs is still under debate. In this study, we investigated HFCs in a large population of the sexually dimorphic lizard Takydromus viridipunctatus (Lacertidae). Because of the high prevalence of parasitism from trombiculid mites in this lizard, we expect individual fitness (i.e., survival) to decrease with increasing parasite load. Furthermore, because morphological asymmetry is likely to influence individuals' mobility (i.e., limb asymmetry) and male biting ability during copulation (i.e., head asymmetry) in this species, we also …

Deterioration Of Metal–Organic Framework Crystal Structure During Fabrication Of Poly(L-Lactic Acid) Mixed-Matrix Membranes, Ajay Kathuria, Mohamad G. Abiad, Rafael Auras
Industrial Technology and Packaging
Poly(l-lactic acid) (PLLA) and metal–organic framework (MOF) mixed-matrix membranes were prepared by melt extrusion of PLLA with 5% (w/w) of either activated or water-saturated Cu3(BTC)2 (Cu3(C9H3O6)2(H2O)3·xH2O, HKUST-1). The morphology and the stability of injection-molded samples were evaluated using thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, gel permeation chromatography, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The presence of activated and saturated MOF crystals increased the cold crystallization onset temperature as compared to neat PLLA. This can be attributed to the …
Laws And Social Norms: Unintended Consequences Of Obesity Laws, Susan Yeh
Laws And Social Norms: Unintended Consequences Of Obesity Laws, Susan Yeh
University of Cincinnati Law Review
Traditional law and economic analysis considers how laws directly incentivize socially optimal behaviors. Meanwhile, a growing theoretical literature posits that beyond deterrence or incentives, laws also communicate normative judgments that can have effects unanticipated by classical predictions. This Article presents empirical evidence supporting the broader legal theory that laws can express social values, leading to shifts in social norms. Using data on adolescent peer networks in the United States, I find that where anti-obesity policies are stricter, social stigma increases for obese girls, though obesity rates do not necessarily decrease. These results are robust and consistent with a model in …

Fertilizer: How Much Is In Each Bale?, Dennis Hancock
Fertilizer: How Much Is In Each Bale?, Dennis Hancock
Kentucky Alfalfa and Stored Forage Conference
What do you see when you look at a bale? Certainly, many would say it is a source of feed for our livestock. Others see a commodity that is sold to their customers. These are the most important aspects of any forage. But, there is one other intrinsic value worth noting… its nutrient content. In a sense, it is a bale of fertilizer.

At War With Their Bodies Or At War With Their Minds? A Glimpse Into The Lives And Minds Of Female Yo-Yo Dieters – The Curtain Has Lifted In U.K.?, Huda Iqbal Ahmed Qazi, Harshad Keval
Journal of International Women's Studies
Yo-yo dieting is a common phenomenon yet little interdisciplinary research has been carried out on dieting, food and nutrition in the social context. This study investigated the effects of yo-yo dieting on social and psychological well-being using qualitative methods. Data were collected by conducting semi-structured interviews with women who yo-yo diet. A total of 9 participants, 20-51 years old, were recruited by purposive and snowball sampling techniques from the University of Roehampton, London, U.K., where the first author was a student at the time of the study. Thematic analysis derived four major themes: the physical and/or mental impact of yo-yo …
Preliminary Exploration Of Bystander Intention To Stand Up For A Female-Peer Targeted In Sexual Harassment In Greek Academia, Stiliani “Ani” Chroni, Stefania Grigoriou, Antonis Hatzigeorgiadis, Yannis Theodorakis
Journal of International Women's Studies
University students’ intentions to stand up for a female-peer victimized in a sexual harassment incident by peer and/or professor as perpetrator were explored using the planned behavior theory. The participants were 296 Greek male and female undergraduate students. Using a standard planned behavior theory questionnaire, hypothetical scenarios of sexual harassment conveyed through (a) unwanted verbal comments of sexual content, (b) unwanted physical contact, and (c) gender based taunting, were presented to participants. In all scenarios, bystander intention to stand up was predicted. Specifically, we found that it is more likely for a student-bystander to intervene when perceiving a strong social …
Ethnic Conflict And Forced Displacement: Narratives Of Azeri Idp And Refugee Women From The Nagorno-Karabakh War, Mehrangiz Najafizadeh
Ethnic Conflict And Forced Displacement: Narratives Of Azeri Idp And Refugee Women From The Nagorno-Karabakh War, Mehrangiz Najafizadeh
Journal of International Women's Studies
The region that now constitutes the Republic of Azerbaijan has witnessed a lengthy history of conflict between Azeris and ethnic Armenians living in Azerbaijan. This longstanding conflict has had severe consequences for Azerbaijan, and Azeri women have been especially affected as hundreds of thousands have been forced from their homes and now live as refugees or as internally displaced persons (IDPs). In this article, I examine Armenian-Azeri ethnic conflict and the plight of Azeri IDP/refugee women both in social historical context and through fieldwork that I have been conducting in Azerbaijan. I first establish the broader sociopolitical context by providing …
International Dimensions Of Discrimination And Violence Against Girls: A Human Rights Perspective, Yvonne Rafferty
International Dimensions Of Discrimination And Violence Against Girls: A Human Rights Perspective, Yvonne Rafferty
Journal of International Women's Studies
In many cultures, being born female can consign the girl child to the peripheries of society where her safety is denied and her human rights are routinely violated. At each and every stage of development, girls are more likely than boys to confront a host of disadvantages associated with discrimination and violence, although the social norms and cultural rules that influence girls are most intensely felt as she struggles to develop into adulthood. At the onset of puberty, or even before, some girls are pulled out of school and forced into early marriage and high-risk pregnancy. Others become victims of …
