Nitric Oxide And Its Metabolites In The Critical Phase Of Illness: Rapid Biomarkers In The Making, Asad Mian, Mayank Aranke, Nathan S. Bryan

Department of Emergency Medicine

The potential of nitric oxide (NO) as a rapid assay biomarker, one that could provide a quantum leap in acute care, remains largely untapped. NO plays a crucial role as bronchodilator, vasodilator and inflammatory mediator. The main objective of this review is to demonstrate how NO is a molecule of heavy interest in various acute disease states along the emergency department and critical care spectrum: respiratory infections, central nervous system infections, asthma, acute kidney injury, sepsis, septic shock, and myocardial ischemia, to name just a few. We discuss how NO and its oxidative metabolites, nitrite and nitrate, are readily detectable …

Effects Of Aging On Apoptosis Gene Expression In Oral Mucosal Tissues, Octavio A. Gonzalez, Michael John Novak, Sreenatha S. Kirakodu, Arnold J. Stromberg, Shu Shen, Luis Orraca, Janis Gonzalez-Martinez, Jeffrey L. Ebersole

Center for Oral Health Research Faculty Publications

Apoptotic processes are important for physiologic renewal of an intact epithelial barrier and contribute some antimicrobial resistance for bacteria and viruses, as well as anti-inflammatory effects that benefits the mucosa. The oral cavity presents a model of host-bacterial interactions at mucosal surfaces, in which a panoply of microorganisms colonizes various niches in the oral cavity and creates complex multispecies biofilms that challenge the gingival tissues. This report details gene expression in apoptotic pathways that occur in oral mucosal tissues across the lifespan, using a nonhuman primate model. Macaca mulatta primates from 2 to 23 years of age (n = …

Faculty Publications

A 5-day method for determining the soluble silicon (Si) concentrations in nonliquid fertilizer products was developed using a sodium carbonate (Na 2CO3)-ammonium nitrate (NH4NO3) extractant followed by visible spectroscopy with heteropoly blue analysis at 660 nm. The 5-Day Na2CO3-NH4NO3 Soluble Si Extraction Method can be applied to quantify the plant-available Si in solid fertilizer products at levels ranging from 0.2 to 8.4% Si with an LOD of 0.06%, and LOQ of 0.20%. This Si extraction method for fertilizers correlates well with plant uptake of Si (r2 = 0.96 for a range of solid fertilizers) and is applicable to solid Si …

Gender-Aware Disaster Care: Simple Interventions That Can Reduce Impact, Suffering, And Post-Disaster Emergency Healthcare Costs, Roxanne Richter

DRU Workshop 2013 Presentations – Disaster Resistant University Workshop: Linking Mitigation and Resilience

As EMS planners and providers, we take many special populations’ needs into account in a disaster - infants, elderly, disabled, and so on - but we should not overlook the critical distinctions in gender-specific care, which are based not only on a woman’s physiological makeup, but within her psychosocial framework. This training session will identify key factors in female-specific care, including 12 risk factors that affect vulnerability, impact, and exposure; PTSD and pain; triage and advocacy; and supplies and services.

Current research points to a pattern of gender differentiation in all areas of the disaster process -preparedness, response, impact, risk …

Examining The Relationship Between Information Obtained At Kindergarten Registration And Reading Comprehension Six Years Later, Paige Swartz

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this correlational study was to determine if variables known upon a group of students' enrollment in kindergarten had a significant relationship with their high-stakes reading assessment results obtained six years later, in the students' fifth grade year. Archival data was gathered from a rural northern Georgia school district. After a correlation matrix was constructed to examine the relationships among all variables of interest, bivariate linear regressions were used to determine whether the predictor variables explained any variance in the results of the fifth grade high-stakes reading assessment. Results indicated that one of the four predictor variables (vocabulary) …

Educational Intervention To Promote And Facilitate Smoking Cessation In Pregnant Women, Jessica Stadick

Theses and Dissertations

Smoking during pregnancy is the single most preventable and modifiable risk factor that is responsible for poor maternal and fetal outcomes, yet it remains a major public health problem. Despite the abundance of well-known risk factors and adverse health outcomes associated with maternal smoking, many women continue to smoke during pregnancy. Maternal smoking is responsible for low birth weight babies, preterm deliveries, and sudden infant death syndrome and long term chronic health conditions of the child. During pregnancy women have an increased desire to quit smoking and health care providers need to take advantage of this opportune time and help …

Increasing California Dairy Exports To Japan And South Korea, Kristina Soper

Dairy Science

The opportunities for increasing exports of California dairy products to the Japanese and South Korean markets were determined by identifying current obstacles in the California dairy industry and determining the characteristics of consumers in the Japanese and South Korean markets. As the largest milk-producing state and the supplier of 7.5% of total U.S. dairy exports, California’s economic activity greatly affects the rest of the nation and the world. The trends in the California dairy industry include increasing total milk production and per-cow milk production, a diminishing number of total dairy operations, and a rising number of large dairy operations. These …
