Rediscovering The Core Of Public Health, Steven Teutsch, Jonathan E. Fielding
Rediscovering The Core Of Public Health, Steven Teutsch, Jonathan E. Fielding
Frontiers in Public Health Services and Systems Research
The success of public health has been its ability to understand contemporary health problems, to communicate the needs successfully, to identify solutions, and to implement them through programs and policies. In the past 50 years, those successes can be attributed largely to control of infectious disease, improved maternal and child health, delivery of other personal health care services, and changes in behaviors, particularly smoking. Yet health is primarily a product of our social, cultural, and physical environments. To continue to improve the nation’s health and reduce disparities, public health needs to return to its historical roots and engage with other …

Fiber-Free White Flour With Fructose Offers A Better Model Of Metabolic Syndrome, Faridah Amin, Anwar Hassan Gilani
Fiber-Free White Flour With Fructose Offers A Better Model Of Metabolic Syndrome, Faridah Amin, Anwar Hassan Gilani
Department of Biological & Biomedical Sciences
BACKGROUND: The metabolic syndrome (MS) is a combination of metabolic abnormalities that lead to an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases. Due to its rising incidence and demanding life-long use of multiple drugs, there is a growing interest in testing and developing new allopathic, complementary and alternative therapies for controlling or curing disorders of MS. The discovery of new therapeutic modalities requires animal models of disease and currently available models have limitations. Developing an appropriate animal model for MS to achieve various therapeutic targets remains a challenge and this study aims to develop a rat model which closely depicts MS in …

Hardcastle, Adrian H. Taylor, Martin P. Bailey, Robert A. Harley, Martin S. Hagger
Peninsula Medical School
BACKGROUND: Intensive diet and physical activity interventions have been found to reduce cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk, but are resource intensive. The American Heart Association recently recommended motivational interviewing (MI) as an effective approach for low-intensity interventions to promote health-related outcomes such as weight loss. However, there is limited research evaluating the long-term effectiveness of MI-based interventions on health-related outcomes associated with CVD risk. The current research evaluated the effectiveness of a six-month low-intensity MI intervention in a UK primary-care setting in maintaining reductions in CVD risk factors at12 months post-intervention. METHODS: Primary-care patients were randomised to an intervention group that …

Addressing The Challenges Of Child And Family Homelessness, Kerri Tobin, Joseph Murphy
Addressing The Challenges Of Child And Family Homelessness, Kerri Tobin, Joseph Murphy
Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk
Homeless children in families comprise the fastest-growing group of homeless persons in the United States. Indeed, the American Academy of Pediatrics considers homelessness to be an issue with which pediatricians should be concerned. In this article, we review existing literature to provide a background for researchers, policymakers, and social service providers hoping to understand the phenomenon of child and family homelessness and various strategies used to address it. We begin with a definition and description of the population of homeless families with children. We then offer a broad consideration of the effects of child and family homelessness, from physical health …

Family Matters: Links Between Family Structure And Early Child Health, Laura L. Freeman, Mackenzie Brewer
Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk
This paper reviews the research of the past two decades that addresses the relationship between family structure and early child health outcomes. Specifically, we focus on family structure’s influence on child health during pregnancy, birth, and infancy. We briefly summarize the most pervasive changes to family structure in the US during recent decades and discuss how early child health is linked to future outcomes for children and adults. We review research that highlights the mechanisms linking family structure to early child health and identify key risk and protective factors for children from the prenatal period through infancy. We conclude with …
Family Structure And Obesity Among U.S. Children, Jennifer M. Augustine Ph.D., Rachel T. Kimbro
Family Structure And Obesity Among U.S. Children, Jennifer M. Augustine Ph.D., Rachel T. Kimbro
Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk
Child obesity in the U.S. is a significant public health issue, particularly among children from disadvantaged backgrounds. Thus, the roles of parents’ human and financial capital and racial and ethnic background have become important topics of social science and public health research on child obesity. Less often discussed, however, is the role of family structure, which is an important predictor of child well-being and indicator of family socioeconomic status. The goal of this study, therefore, is to investigate how preschool aged children’s risk of obesity varies across a diverse set of family structures and whether these differences in obesity are …

Mosakowski Institute for Public Enterprise
The youth of Massachusetts are of primary concern to legislators and citizens. This briefing report features three essays by experts — Fern Johnson, Deborah Frank, and Donna Haig Friedman — who focus on three aspects of children in need: children in foster care who need adoption, children who are hungry, and children who are homeless. Each report has further and more detailed suggestions for helping these children in need; below is a summary of the problems we face.

Type Ii Diabetes And Dietary Preferences In A Rapidly Urbanizing Region Of West Africa, Megan Doherty
Master of Public Health Capstone Presentations
This study aims to identify themes in food preferences, knowledge, attitudes and behaviors (KAB) among a mix of rural and urban Ghanaians in the greater Kumasi region; to inform health interventions targeting better patient management of type II diabetes in a rapidly urbanizing region of Ghana; and to inform social marketing strategies by providing insight into consumption patterns. Urban centers in Sub-Saharan Africa have been especially impacted by the persistence of infectious disease and accompanying rise in non-communicable disease prevalence, including type II diabetes. In fact, type II diabetes recently registered as tenth among top causes of death in Kumasi, …

Population Structure And The Colonization Route Of One Of The Oldest North American Invasive Insects: Stories From The Worn Road Of The Hessian Fly, Mayetiola Destructor (Say)., Philip K. Morton, Brandon J. Schemerhorn
Department of Entomology Faculty Publications
An integral part to understanding the biology of an invasive species is determining its origin, particularly in pest species. As one of the oldest known invasive species, the goals of this study were to evaluate the evidence of a westward expansion of Hessian fly into North America, from a potential singular introduction event, and the population genetic structure of current populations. Levels of genetic diversity and population structure in the Hessian fly were compared across North America, Europe, North Africa, Western Asia, and New Zealand. Furthermore, Old World populations were evaluated as possible sources of introduction. We tested diversity and …

Development And Evaluation Of The Eastern Pennsylvania And Delaware Geriatric Education Center’S (Epad Gec) Geriatric Oncology Online Toolkit, Mariana R. Kuperman
Master of Public Health Capstone Presentations
Older adults have higher cancer rates than younger adults. Treating geriatric cancer patients is a challenge because they present with comorbidities, poly-pharmacy, physical frailty, and/or cognitive impairment. The interprofessional oncology treatment team may not be adequately trained to meet the special needs of geriatric cancer patients. The EPaD GEC focuses on interprofessional geriatric education targeting students, faculty and practitioners by developing and disseminating interprofessional geriatric training programs, including self-directed online learning modules. The Geriatric Oncology Care Module focuses on specialized considerations in the treatment/care of older cancer patients. The purpose of this project is to develop a Geriatric Oncology toolkit …

Catholics On The Margins In India: Dalits And Adivasis, Leo D. Lefebure
Catholics On The Margins In India: Dalits And Adivasis, Leo D. Lefebure
Claritas: Journal of Dialogue and Culture
This article discusses the lives of the Catholic Dalit and adivasi communities in India and surveys recent theologies developed in this context. These communities constitute the majority of Catholics in India today, but they have frequently been neglected in theological discussions, and they continue to suffer discrimination both in Indian society and in the Catholic Church. The author reviews a number of interpretations of biblical theology in relation to Dalit experience, as well as the Christology of a pioneering adivasi theologian and a Trinitarian theology developed in relation to adivasi life. The article concludes with reflections of the author on …

Expansion Of Breast Cancer Stem Cells With Fibrous Scaffolds, Sheng Feng, Pang-Kuo Lo, Shou Liu, Xinfeng Liu, Hexin Chen, Qian Wang
Faculty Publications
Cancer stem cells (CSCs) are hypothesized as tumor-initiating cells within tumors and main contributors of tumor growth, metastasis and recurrence. Mammary cancer cells, MCF-7 cells, were cultured on 3D polycaprolactone (PCL) fibrous scaffolds, showing an increased proportion of CSCs. The expression of stem cell markers, including OCT3/4 and SOX2, and breast CSC-specific markers, SOX4 and CD49f, was significantly upregulated, and the mammosphere-forming capability in cells cultured on PCL fibrous scaffolds increased. The fibrous scaffolds also induced the elongation of MCF-7 cells and extended cell proliferation. The increase of CSC properties after being cultured on fibrous scaffolds was further confirmed with …

Sugar Promotes Vegetative Phase Change In Arabidopsis Thaliana By Repressing The Expression Of Mir156a And Mir156c, Li Yang, Mingli Xu, Yeonjong Koo, Jia He, R. Scott Poethig
Faculty Publications
Nutrients shape the growth, maturation, and aging of plants and animals. In plants, the juvenile to adult transition (vegetative phase change) is initiated by a decrease in miR156. In Arabidopsis, we found that exogenous sugar decreased the abundance of miR156, whereas reduced photosynthesis increased the level of this miRNA. This effect was correlated with a change in the timing of vegetative phase change, and was primarily attributable to a change in the expression of two genes, MIR156A and MIR156C, which were found to play dominant roles in this transition. The glucose-induced repression of miR156 was dependent on the …
