Religiosity, Spirituality, And The Metabolic Syndrome Among U.S. Hispanics/Latinos In The Sociocultural Ancillary Study Of The Hispanic Community Health Study/Study Of Latinos (Hchs/Sol), Carrie E. Brintz

Open Access Theses

Hispanics/Latinos in the U.S. experience a disproportionate amount of socioeconomic adversities and culturally specific stressors. In addition, they have higher rates of obesity and diabetes than other ethnic groups and may have higher rates of the metabolic syndrome. Religiosity and Spirituality (R/S) are integral parts of Hispanic culture, and have been shown to be protective of various health outcomes such as all-cause mortality and CVD in the general population. Health outcomes and possible protective factors such as R/S have not been well studied in Hispanics. The proposed study examined the relationship between multiple dimensions of R/S and the metabolic syndrome …

The Endosymbiont Arsenophonus Is Widespread In Soybean Aphid, Aphis Glycines, But Does Not Provide Protection From Parasitoids Or A Fungal Pathogen, Jason A. Wulff, Karrie A. Buckman, Kongming Wu, George E. Heimpel, Jennifer A. White

Entomology Faculty Publications

Aphids commonly harbor bacterial facultative symbionts that have a variety of effects upon their aphid hosts, including defense against hymenopteran parasitoids and fungal pathogens. The soybean aphid, Aphis glycines Matsumura (Hemiptera: Aphididae), is infected with the symbiont Arsenophonus sp., which has an unknown role in its aphid host. Our research goals were to document the infection frequency and diversity of the symbiont in field-collected soybean aphids, and to determine whether Arsenophonus is defending soybean aphid against natural enemies. We performed diagnostic PCR and sequenced four Arsenophonus genes in soybean aphids from their native and introduced range to estimate infection frequency …

A Transnational And Intergenerational Account Of Value Preference Patterns: Revisiting Needs-Gratification And Post-Materialist Theories, Fouad Bou Zeineddine Apr 2013

A Transnational And Intergenerational Account Of Value Preference Patterns: Revisiting Needs-Gratification And Post-Materialist Theories, Fouad Bou Zeineddine

Master's Theses

The socio-political values predominant in a particular society will reflect the correspondent needs of that society, and these needs can include factors other than material acquisition. In contrast to needs-gratification theory (Maslow, 1970), and post-materialist theory (Inglehart, 1971), this paper discusses agency in terms of relational autonomy (Oshana, 2006), as it pertains to power. I argue that a) personal and national economic affluence or security may not be sufficient to describe social ecology nor fully describe the ways that power can influence values, b) individual and collective relational power is utilitarian and essential, c) fulfillment of material and social needs …

Contributions Of Apolipoprotein E And Environmental Factors In Alzheimer’S Disease, Kelly C. Mcmullen

Senior Honors Theses

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a debilitating neurodegenerative disorder, which currently affects nearly 5.5 million people in the United States alone. Clinical features often exhibited in AD include memory loss, unusual behavior, personality changes, and impaired cognitive function. The primary molecular hallmarks of AD include deposits of senile plaques and neurofibrillary tangles in brain tissue. A myriad of risk factors are associated with the disease, but this review will focus on Apolipoprotein E polymorphisms and certain environmental factors. Understanding the role of Apolipoprotein E in AD pathology may aid in the development of certain drug therapies and possible cures for AD. …

The Influence Of Diet On The Mammalian Gut Microbiome, Brian David Muegge Apr 2013

The Influence Of Diet On The Mammalian Gut Microbiome, Brian David Muegge

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

The mammalian gut is residence to a large microbial community whose collective set of millions of genes: microbiome) encodes a vast array of functions, including many that process dietary components. Few tools are available to change the microbiome's properties to promote host health because the factors governing community assembly and operation are poorly understood. My thesis focused on the impact of one factor, host diet.

I used a variety of experimental and computational methods to perform a comparative metagenomic study of the fecal communities of 39 diverse mammals to assess microbiome variation. These animals included herbivores, omnivores and carnivores representing …

Angiotensin Type 1 Receptor Resistance To Blockade In The Opossum Proximal Tubule Cell Due To Variations In The Binding Pocket, Ravi Nistala, Bradley T. Andresen, Lakshmi Pulakat, Alex Meuth, Catherine Sinak, Chirag Mandavia, Thomas Thekkumkara, Robert C. Speth, Adam Whaley-Connell, James R. Sowers

HPD Articles

Blockade of the angiotensin (ANG) II receptor type 1 (AT(1)R) with angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) is widely used in the treatment of hypertension. However, ARBs are variably effective in reducing blood pressure, likely due, in part, to polymorphisms in the ARB binding pocket of the AT(1)R. Therefore, we need a better understanding of variations/polymorphisms that alter binding of ARBs in heterogeneous patient populations. The opossum proximal tubule cell (OKP) line is commonly used in research to evaluate renal sodium handling and therefore blood pressure. Investigating this issue, we found natural sequence variations in the opossum AT(1)R paralleling those observed in …

Holobiont Nutrition: Considering The Role Of The Gastrointestinal Microbiota In The Health Benefits Of Whole Grains, Jens Walter, Ines Martinez, Devin J. Rose Apr 2013

Holobiont Nutrition: Considering The Role Of The Gastrointestinal Microbiota In The Health Benefits Of Whole Grains, Jens Walter, Ines Martinez, Devin J. Rose

Food for Health: Publications

Intake of whole grains and other food products high in dietary fiber have long been linked to the prevention of chronic diseases associated with inflammation. A contribution of the gastrointestinal microbiota to these effects has been suggested, but little is known on how whole grains interact with gut bacteria. We have recently published the first human trial that made use of next-generation sequencing to determine the effect of whole grains (whole grain barley, brown rice or a mixture of the two) on fecal microbiota structure and tested for associations between the gut microbiota and blood markers of inflammation, glucose and …

Chemical Warfare Agents In Plants: Biodefensive Terpenes From Sagebrush, Belinda Stierman Apr 2013

Chemical Warfare Agents In Plants: Biodefensive Terpenes From Sagebrush, Belinda Stierman

College of Arts and Sciences Poster Presentations

To prevent being eaten, some plants create compounds that are toxic to herbivores, and herbivores respond by creating new ways to metabolize these toxins. For example, sagebrush produces bio-defensive terpenes to deter foraging by sage grouse. A recent investigation to characterize plant secondary metabolites (PSM's) in sagebrush resulted in a correlation between terpene concentration and nutritional content in local sagebrush to the habitat selection of sage grouse. This study identified many of the terpenes in sagebrush, but not all of them. A highly volatile and elusive terpene is suspected to be an important PSM that significantly affects sage grouse foraging. …

A Literature Review Of Dietary Resveratrol Supplements: Do They Mimic The Effects Of Endurance Exercise?, Natalie Mcquillan Apr 2013

A Literature Review Of Dietary Resveratrol Supplements: Do They Mimic The Effects Of Endurance Exercise?, Natalie Mcquillan

Honors Projects

Resveratrol is a polyphenol whose best dietary sources are red wine, red grapes, and peanuts. It has become a popular dietary supplement because it has been suggested to be responsible for the cardioprotective effects of red wine. Resveratrol may also mimic the effects of calorie-restriction to increase longevity, as shown in several animal studies. Resveratrol is thought to exert its effects primarily by activating a class of proteins called sirtuins. These proteins are NAD+-dependent deacetylases that potentially regulate metabolism and gene expression. A further increase in the popularity of resveratrol supplements occurred following reports that it may also …

Systematics Of Clavicipitaceous Fungi Associated With Morning Glories Based On Rpb1 Sequence Data, Saroj Simkhada Apr 2013

Systematics Of Clavicipitaceous Fungi Associated With Morning Glories Based On Rpb1 Sequence Data, Saroj Simkhada

Academic Summit

The main goal of this research is to examine systematics of claviceps associated with morning glories. This study tests two hypotheses reflecting evolutionary relationships of these fungi :(1) fungal-morning glory relationships may reflect biogeographic patterns, (2) comparative methods may detect congruency in host/symbiont phylogenies. This study reports largest subunit of RNA polymeraseII (rpb1) sequence data. Hosts morning glories of Amnicola clade are found in different geographical regions eliminating biogeographic hypothesis. On comparing host/symbiont phylogenies, congruence suggested ancient relationship. However, minor genetic divergence indicated by sequence data suggests that claviceps found within morning glories of different regions, could be single species.

Method For Measuring The Contribution Of The Vastus Lateralis To Cycling In Incremental Tests To Fatigue In Women, Tori Haggett, Hunter Wilhoit, Nathan Klabunde

Furman Engaged!

The purpose of this study is to determine whether or not there is a significant increase in the muscle activity of the vastus lateralis at different stages of a resistance ramp test to fatigue during cycling. The vastus lateralis is the quadriceps muscle on the lateral side of the leg. Basically, this study is figuring out if this muscle is more active at a higher power, or higher resistance, during cycling.

A Comparative Study Of The United States Response To Haiti's 2010 Earthquake And Indonesia's Indian Ocean Tsunami In 2004, Yineth Sanchez

Undergraduate Student Symposium

The 2010 Haitian Earthquake resulted in approximately 220,500 casualties and 1.8 million people displaced. Similarly, the Indian Ocean Tsunami in 2004 caused catastrophic effects in the southeast region of the globe devastating more than twelve countries in less than ten minutes. In Indonesia alone, the tsunami caused 225,000 deaths and left 1.7 million individuals displaced. Both of these disasters were regarded as national emergencies for their respective countries. During the initial recovery period, Haiti and Indonesia faced serious relief challenges that led them to ask the international community for assistance. As one of the major global contributors of aid in …
