Paternalism And Psychic Taxes: The Government's Use Of Negative Emotions To Save Us From Ourselves, Gary M. Lucas Jr
Paternalism And Psychic Taxes: The Government's Use Of Negative Emotions To Save Us From Ourselves, Gary M. Lucas Jr
Faculty Scholarship
Paternalism has become increasingly popular among policymakers. Governments at all levels are seriously considering or have recently adopted many paternalistic proposals. For example, the Obama Administration has increased cigarette taxes and adopted a tax on indoor tanning. Similarly, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has proposed a ban on the sale of soda and other sugary drinks in containers larger than sixteen ounces. All of these policies are motivated to some degree by a desire to save people from themselves.
This Article analyzes whether the government should use "psychic taxes" as a tool for achieving paternalistic goals. A psychic tax …

Neighboring In Strip City: A Situational Analysis Of Strip Clubs, Land Use Conflict, And Occupational Health In Portland, Oregon, Moriah Mcsharry Mcgrath
Dissertations and Theses
A lack of land use controls on sexually oriented businesses contributes to the unique configuration of Portland, Oregon's strip clubs: nearly fifty clubs are distributed throughout the city's neighborhoods. Considered a locally unwanted land use (LULU) by many, these strip clubs are regulated by a variety of formal and informal social processes in the absence of zoning. This qualitative study explores drivers and constraints shaping the spatial configuration of Portland's strip club industry as well as influences on land use conflict at strip club sites and working conditions for women who work as exotic dancers in the clubs. Data collection …

Effects Of Shoe Donations On Children’S Time Allocation Toms Shoes In El Salvador, Flor Calvo
Master's Theses
What are the impacts of TOMS shoe donations in rural El Salvador? This paper tries to answer the question by studying the changes in time allocation among children age 6 to 12 years in El Salvador. By taking advantage of a Randomized Control Trial performed between January 15, 2012 and February 21, 2013 I study time allocation differences between baseline and follow-up periods among treatment and control groups. The primary findings of the study show that children part of treatment communities reduced the time spent on school related activities by approximately 0.657 hours per day while increasing the time spent …

Mechanisms Of Nutrient Limitation And Nutrient Acquisition In Managed And Unmanaged Forest Ecosystems, Matthew A. Vadeboncoeur
Mechanisms Of Nutrient Limitation And Nutrient Acquisition In Managed And Unmanaged Forest Ecosystems, Matthew A. Vadeboncoeur
Doctoral Dissertations
Understanding the interactions between global change, human and natural disturbances, and other factors on biogeochemical processes in forests is necessary to ensure the sustainability of forest management. Here I report the results of several investigations into nutrient acquisition processes in the forests of New Hampshire. I begin with a meta-analysis of fertilization studies showing that phosphorus (P) and calcium (Ca) as well as nitrogen (N) may limit primary production in deciduous forests of the region. Because these limiting nutrients are all removed from the ecosystem when trees are harvested, I compared nutrient budgets under a range of harvesting scenarios with …
Perceptions Of Loss And Grief Experiences Within Religious Burial And Funeral, Hyacinth C. Okafor
Perceptions Of Loss And Grief Experiences Within Religious Burial And Funeral, Hyacinth C. Okafor
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Abstract
The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore perceptions of loss and grief experiences within religious rites and rituals vis-à-vis the context of counseling. Literature indicated the need for a better understanding of grief and loss experiences from bereaved individuals’ perspectives and the context within which loss and grief experiences occur (Dillenburger & Keenan, 2005; Stroebe, Hansson, Schut, & Stroebe, 2008). Participants for this study included 10 purposefully selected Catholic members from two Catholic Church parishes in Nigeria, Africa. All participants had experienced loss and grief, had participated in Catholic burial and funeral rites and rituals, and were …
Mapping The Beta-Sheet Structure Of The Yeast Prion Sup35 Through Creation Of Targeted Mutant Forms, Emily K. Davis, James D. Knox, Daniel Palacios
Mapping The Beta-Sheet Structure Of The Yeast Prion Sup35 Through Creation Of Targeted Mutant Forms, Emily K. Davis, James D. Knox, Daniel Palacios
Science and Social Sciences
Proteins with an aggregated form rich in beta-sheet structure are known as amyloids, of which a subset are infectious. These infectious proteins are known as prions and cause diseases including bovine spongiform encephalopathy (“Mad Cow” disease). Several prions have been identified in the baker’s yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae. One of the most well-studied yeast prions is the protein Sup35. To understand the fine protein structure of Sup35 better, we used PCR-based mutagenesis to introduce a lysine residue (a charged amino acid) at five defined places in the protein sequence of Sup35. We describe our process for creating these mutant versions and …

Alaska Native Females: Understanding Body Image Dissatisfaction In A Culturally Diverse Country, Karaline M. Naegele
Alaska Native Females: Understanding Body Image Dissatisfaction In A Culturally Diverse Country, Karaline M. Naegele
Education
The current study was conducted to expand literature on body image dissatisfaction (BID) in Alaska Native females. As BID has been a concern for European American females, and many minority groups in America, professionals should examine all cultural groups for the presence of BID. The research was comprised of qualitative interviewing methods. Interviews were conducted with Alaska Native female participants between the ages of 18 and 23 years, attending the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Research questions addressed whether or not Alaska Native females experience BID, and if so how BID develops and manifests for this population. The study found that …
Synthesis And Antifungal Evaluation Of Barbiturate Saponins And Progress Towards Cysteinyl Metal Peptides, Monika Madhav
Synthesis And Antifungal Evaluation Of Barbiturate Saponins And Progress Towards Cysteinyl Metal Peptides, Monika Madhav
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Invasive fungal infections are a major threat to immune-compromised patients. There is a critical need to develop new antifungal agents because of increasing resistance to the common antifungal drugs.
In the first part of this dissertation, methods for preparation of novel barbiturate saponin as antifungals and their biological activities would be described. Barbiturates and steroidal saponins have shown remarkable antifungal activity in the biological assays. Therefore, attempts were directed to combine the barbiturate with the steroid to give novel antifungal agents. The need for extensive SAR studies and to better understand these compounds efforts were directed to synthesize novel saponin …

A Temporal Comparison Of The Eelgrass (Zostera Marina L.) Food Web And Community Structure At Izembek Lagoon, Alaska From The Mid-1970'S To 2008, Amy C. Tippery
Marine Biology
This thesis investigates food web and community structure in Izembek Lagoon, Alaska, an ecologically important sub-arctic seagrass system. Unprecedented environmental changes in high latitudes, such as increased sea-surface temperatures and a shorter duration of shore-fast sea ice, may now favor seagrass over phytoplankton production as compared to forty years ago. Any resulting shifts in food web and community dynamics could have substantial consequences given the importance of seagrass habitat for Alaskan fisheries, global migratory bird populations and benthic energy transformation. Recent (2008) stable isotope (C and N) values and benthic community metrics were gathered and compared to results from a …

Megaherbivores And Cattle Alter Edge Effects Around Ecosystem Hotspots In An African Savanna, Lauren M. Porensky, Solveig Franziska Bucher, Kari E. Veblen, Anna C. Treydte, Truman P. Young
Wildland Resources Faculty Publications
Wild mammalian herbivores and cattle are fundamental drivers of African savanna ecosystems and have strong impacts on woody vegetation. However, few experimental studies have investigated the separate and combined influences of different large herbivores on spatial vegetation patterning. In East Africa, temporary cattle corrals (bomas) develop after abandonment into productive, treeless 'glades' that attract both domestic and wild herbivores. Edges of glades exhibit unusually high densities of large trees. We used a long-term, broad-scale manipulative experiment to test whether megaherbivores (elephants and giraffes), wild meso-herbivores (15–1000kg), or cattle caused shifts in woody plant abundances in glate edges. We also examined …
The Corporatization Of America's Healthcare System: Implications For Compassion Fatigue Among Nurses, Erika L. Gathron
The Corporatization Of America's Healthcare System: Implications For Compassion Fatigue Among Nurses, Erika L. Gathron
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to expand on the existing framework for the analysis of compassion fatigue by exploring contributing factors not traditionally examined such as increases in the number of patients assigned to each nurse, more hours of work per shift, the use of non-licensed clinical personnel instead of licensed clinical personnel, and changes in work flow management. This thesis explores one main research question: How does the corporatization of America’s healthcare system contribute to nurse’s lived experience of compassion fatigue? Michael Burawoy’s extended case method is deployed in order to gain a broader understanding of compassion fatigue. …

Resource Partitioning Between Breeding Common (Uria Aalge) And Thick-Billed Murres (Uria Lomvia), Christopher Paul Barger
Resource Partitioning Between Breeding Common (Uria Aalge) And Thick-Billed Murres (Uria Lomvia), Christopher Paul Barger
Biological Sciences
In seabirds, food availability is a driver of ecological and evolutionary processes. Here we examine how changes in food availability and energy demands affect both inter-specific resource partitioning and the genetic diversity within a species. We examined the effects of interannual fluctuations in food availability and predictable seasonal increases in energy demands on prey partitioning between breeding common (Uric aalge) and thick-billed (U. lomvia) murres. We observed strong spatial, temporal and dietary differences in the use of prey resources between the species. We found that partitioning increased as food availability declined and as energy demands increased during chick-rearing. We conclude …
Effects Of Diet Quality And Quantity On Caribou And Reindeer (Rangifer Tarandus), Daniel Paul Thompson
Effects Of Diet Quality And Quantity On Caribou And Reindeer (Rangifer Tarandus), Daniel Paul Thompson
Biological Sciences
Caribou and reindeer (Rangifer tarandus) encounter natural and anthropogenic disturbances across the landscape. In late winter, Rangifer encounter acute food from disturbances such as icing events. Furthermore, as shrubs expand into the Arctic tundra, the proportion of low quality browse may increase in the summer diet of Rangifer. This study evaluated how Rangifer tolerate 1) fluctuations in food quantity in late winter and 2) changes in forage quality over the summer. Rangifer can compensate for food shortages by increasing intake after restriction, which would allow animals to restore body mass quickly during migration. High body fat reserves increase the tolerance …

Understanding Institutional And Social Factors Relating To The Provisioning Of Water And Sanitation Services In Rural Alaska: Perspectives On Community Self-Reliance From Nine Native Villages Of Interior Alaska, Mercedes FáTima Ochante CáCeres
Arctic and Northern Studies
The global community acknowledges the essential nature of potable water and proper sanitation to the realization of human rights. Since 1959 federal, state and tribal efforts have focused on the goal of equitably providing these services to Alaska Native villages. However, demographic and geographical realities along with limited resources pose formidable challenges to achieving this lofty goal. This thesis explores the challenges to providing safe drinking water in remote Interior Alaska villages and their impact on self-reliance from the perspectives of knowledgeable village residents. Findings from a grounded theory analysis reveal that despite competence and concerted efforts to meet community …

Growth And Energetic Condition Of Dolly Varden Char In Coastal Arctic Waters, Jason T. Stolarski
Growth And Energetic Condition Of Dolly Varden Char In Coastal Arctic Waters, Jason T. Stolarski
Fisheries
Dolly Varden char Salvelinus malma are a dominant member of the nearshore Arctic icthyofauna and support one of the largest subsistence fisheries within Arctic coastal communities in Alaska. Despite this importance, numerous aspects of Dolly Varden ecology remain poorly understood, which inhibits efforts to assess the biological consequences of anthropogenic disturbances such as hydrocarbon extraction and climate change within nearshore areas. The goal of this research was to develop and apply new techniques to measure and assess the biological integrity of Dolly Varden populations. To do so, I evaluated the precision of age determination generated from scales, otoliths, and fin …
