Current Status Of Shodhgangotri: Repository Of Indian Research In Progress, Shantashree S. Sengupta
Current Status Of Shodhgangotri: Repository Of Indian Research In Progress, Shantashree S. Sengupta
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Across the globe, new research projects are undertaken every year by the researchers. There should be some system which will maintain a database of ongoing research work in order to avoid duplication of research. Some universities and institutions in foreign countries maintain database of research in progress. In India, various universities and institutions like INFLIBNET, DELNET, NASSDOC, IISc, CSIR and University of Mysore etc. have their Electronic thesis and dissertation (ETD) repository providing open or login based access to full-text ETDs. But, none of these have any database of Research in Progress. Recently, INFLIBNET introduced ShodhGangotri, which has been built …
Application Of Hydrogen Peroxide As Brown Tide Bloom Control Agent, Varunpreet Randhawa
Application Of Hydrogen Peroxide As Brown Tide Bloom Control Agent, Varunpreet Randhawa
Dissertations
Harmful algal blooms (HABs) are growing problem across the globe. One such HAB that’s recurring in the coastal waters of New York and New Jersey since mid-1980s, and has been reported in other countries recently, is brown tide bloom. The causal organism is a minute pel agophyte (cell diameter ~- 2µ m) Aureococcus anophagefferens. The brown tide bloom has been responsible for the severe ecological damage and economic loss (e.g. shellfishery) in the affected areas. This research focuses on finding a method to control brown tide blooms and explores the potential of natural chemical biocide hydrogen peroxide (H2 …

Computational Modeling Of Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (Tdcs) In Obesity: Impact Of Head Fat And Dose Guidelines☆, Dennis Q. Truong, Greta Magerowski, George L. Blackburn, Marom Bikson, Miguel Alonso-Alonso
Publications and Research
Recent studies show that acute neuromodulation of the prefrontal cortex with transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) can decrease food craving, attentional bias to food, and actual food intake. These data suggest potential clinical applications for tDCS in the field of obesity. However, optimal stimulation parameters in obese individuals are uncertain. One fundamental concern is whether a thick, low-conductivity layer of subcutaneous fat around the head can affect current density distribution and require dose adjustments during tDCS administration. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of head fat on the distribution of current during tDCS and evaluate whether …

Physiology Faculty Publications
INTRODUCTION: Development of secondary hyperalgesia following a cutaneous injury is a centrally mediated, robust phenomenon. The pathophysiological role of endogenous opioid signalling to the development of hyperalgesia is unclear. Recent animal studies, carried out after the resolution of inflammatory pain, have demonstrated reinstatement of tactile hypersensitivity following administration of μ-opioid-receptor-antagonists. In the present study in humans, we analyzed the effect of naloxone when given after the resolution of secondary hyperalgesia following a first-degree burn injury.
METHODS: Twenty-two healthy volunteers were included in this placebo-controlled, randomized, double-blind, cross-over study. Following baseline assessment of thermal and mechanical thresholds, a first-degree burn injury …

An Interdisciplinary Approach To Documenting Knowledge: Plants And Their Uses In Southern Greenland, Simone S. Whitecloud, Lenore A. Grenoble
An Interdisciplinary Approach To Documenting Knowledge: Plants And Their Uses In Southern Greenland, Simone S. Whitecloud, Lenore A. Grenoble
Dartmouth Scholarship
Local Greenlanders assume that traditional knowledge of plant uses in Greenland has been lost due to extensive Danish contact and modernization. We used an interdisciplinary approach to reconstruct this lost knowledge: the biologist provided botanical identification, plant uses, methods of collection, preparation, and storage, while the linguist provided access to the linguistic identification of the plants, both in Greenland and in a pan-Inuit context, and access to the historical documentation. We conducted open-ended and semi-structured interviews at two sites in South Greenland to document plant names and uses. Our findings indicate that local knowledge of is greater than believed. We …
A Case Study Of After-School Activities In One School That Is Making Progress In Closing The Achievement Gap, Susan Robin Shugerman
A Case Study Of After-School Activities In One School That Is Making Progress In Closing The Achievement Gap, Susan Robin Shugerman
Dissertations and Theses
Closing the achievement gap has been a national conversation for several decades and a priority for educators and researchers. By looking closely at one school which is showing exceptional success with closing the achievement gap for low income students and English language learners, this study seeks to understand how school personnel and parents view after-school activities and ways in which those activities may be impacting students who are making significant gains in spite of the achievement gap. After-school activities have been shown to bring many positive outcomes for students. That said, there is much that we do not yet know …

Infusing Service-Learning Into Academic Abc's: Awareness, Behavior, Community Collaboration, Mary E. Tanner, Cindy L. Brown
PRISM: A Journal of Regional Engagement
As part of a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Service-Learning grant, a service-learning project was integrated into two college programs. The overall purpose of this project was to address identified community needs concerning nutrition, health-related issues, food security, and food sustainability. First-year college students developed and implemented a community nutrition survey, and created a list of community resources. These students then shared their survey results and overall impressions of the experience with public health nursing students, who then addressed community needs through a variety of service-learning interventions. Some of these interventions included mobilizing church volunteers to increase the availability …

Comparison Of The Effects Of Toxic Cyanobacteria On The Reproductive Success Of Eurytemora Affinis Populations In The Baltic Sea And Green Bay, Wisconsin, Amanda Dwyer
Lawrence University Honors Projects
The Northern Baltic Sea, off the southern coast of Finland, and Green Bay, off Lake Michigan in Wisconsin, both experience large toxic cyanobacteria blooms, especially during the summer and early fall months. Nodularia spumigena is the toxic algae in the Baltic Sea and produces the toxin Nodularin. Nodularin is a toxin that has branched from the toxin Microcystin, which is produced by Microcystis, the toxic algae forming blooms in Green Bay. While the toxin often acts as a defense mechanism to deter zooplankton from grazing, the calenoid copepod Eurytemora affinis, with populations in both the Baltic and Green Bay, …

Propagation Of Homalodisca Coagulata Virus-01 Via Homalodisca Vitripennis Cell Culture, Anna Biesbrock
Biology Theses
The glassy-winged sharpshooter (Homalodisca vitripennis) is a highly vagile and polyphagous insect, which feeds on more than 100 plant species throughout the southwestern United States. Sharpshooters are the predominant vector of Xylella fastidiosa (Xf), a xylem-limited bacterium that is the causal agent of Pierce's disease (PD) of grapevine. Infected H. vitripennis transmit the bacterium while feeding. The rise of PD has been economically damaging for agriculture and H. vitripennis have become a target for disease control. A dicistrovirus identified as Homalodisca coagulata virus-01 (HoCV-01) has been associated with an increase in mortality rates within infected H. vitripennis populations. A host …
Bactericera Cockerelli: Range Expansion, Candidatus Liberibacter Solanacaerum Detection, And Microbial Community Analysis, Alex Arp
Biology Theses
The potato psyllid (Bactericera cockerelli) is an emerging pest of solanacious crops. Traditionally their range expanded from Guatemala north through the central United States and into southern California. Recent expansions have led to potato psyllids residing as far south as Nicaragua and as for north as Washington State. Potato psyllids were also accidentally imported into New Zealand. These expansions are alarming because potato psyllids transmit Candidatus Liberibacter solanacaerum (Lso), the bacteria associated with Zebra Chip disease in potato, which results in millions of dollars in damages annually. In this study, potato psyllid and Zebra Chip range expansion into Central America …

Effect Of Salts On The Co-Fermentation Of Glucose And Xylose By A Genetically Engineered Strain Of Saccharomyces Cerevisiae., Elizabeth Casey, Nathan S. Mosier, Jiri Adamec, Zachary Stockdale, Nancy Ho, Miroslav Sedlak
School of Agricultural & Biological Engineering Faculty Publications
Background
A challenge currently facing the cellulosic biofuel industry is the efficient fermentation of both C5 and C6 sugars in the presence of inhibitors. To overcome this challenge, microorganisms that are capable of mixed-sugar fermentation need to be further developed for increased inhibitor tolerance. However, this requires an understanding of the physiological impact of inhibitors on the microorganism. This paper investigates the effect of salts on Saccharomyces cerevisiae 424A(LNH-ST), a yeast strain capable of effectively co-fermenting glucose and xylose.
Results
In this study, we show that salts can be significant inhibitors of S. cerevisiae. All 6 pairs of anions …

Probiotics, Prebiotics And Immunomodulation Of Gut Mucosal Defences: Homeostasis And Immunopathology., Holly Hardy, Jennifer Harris, Eleanor Lyon, Jane Beal, Andrew D. Foey
School of Biomedical Sciences
Probiotics are beneficial microbes that confer a realistic health benefit on the host, which in combination with prebiotics, (indigestible dietary fibre/carbohydrate), also confer a health benefit on the host via products resulting from anaerobic fermentation. There is a growing body of evidence documenting the immune-modulatory ability of probiotic bacteria, it is therefore reasonable to suggest that this is potentiated via a combination of prebiotics and probiotics as a symbiotic mix. The need for probiotic formulations has been appreciated for the health benefits in "topping up your good bacteria" or indeed in an attempt to normalise the dysbiotic microbiota associated with …

Vitamin D And The Athlete: Risks, Recommendations, And Benefits, Dana Ogan, Kelly Pritchett
All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences
Vitamin D is well known for its role in calcium regulation and bone health, but emerging literature tells of vitamin D’s central role in other vital body processes, such as: signaling gene response, protein synthesis, hormone synthesis, immune response, plus, cell turnover and regeneration. The discovery of the vitamin D receptor within the muscle suggested a significant role for vitamin D in muscle tissue function. This discovery led researchers to question the impact that vitamin D deficiency could have on athletic performance and injury. With over 77% of the general population considered vitamin D insufficient, it’s likely that many athletes …

Background: Cat fleas, Ctenocephalides felis, are known biological vectors for Rickettsia felis. Rickettsial transmission can be vertical via transovarial transmission within a flea population, as well as horizontal between fleas through a bloodmeal. The previously undescribed infection kinetics of bloodmeal-acquired R. felis in cat fleas provides insight into the R. felis-flea interaction. Findings. In the present study, dissemination of R. felis in previously uninfected cat fleas fed an R. felis-infected bloodmeal was investigated. At weekly intervals for 28 days, rickettsial propagation, accumulation, and dissemination in gut epithelial cells, specifically in the hindgut and the specialized cells in the neck region …
