Plymouth Institute of Education

Health and Physical Education (HPE) as an Australian curriculum learning area is associated with holistic lifelong health and wellbeing. Research suggests that the optimum time for children to learn and refine their motor skills and to be introduced to positive HPE experiences is during preschool and early primary school years. This report presents the key findings of an investigation into primary school principals’ perceptions of a university pre-service teacher education course where the graduate teacher is qualified as both a generalist primary classroom teacher and a HPE specialist.

Creating A New Kind Of Hero At Wellstar Health System, Donald H. Campbell Jul 2013

Creating A New Kind Of Hero At Wellstar Health System, Donald H. Campbell

Journal of Executive Education

When Dr. Marcus Welby practiced medicine things were different. A diagnosis was not always simple but a cure was never far out of sight. More importantly the roles of physician, patient, nurse and family were clear. The doctor was in charge. His actions were never questioned. Operating on an infectious disease model of medical care where every illness had a cause, an effect, and a cure, he was revered as the holder of the key to the cure. He held most, if not all of the information. Communication was typically one way. No one ever questioned the information, its source, …

Zinc is an essential mineral for humans and plants and is involved in many physiological and biochemical processes. In humans, Zn deficiency has been associated with retarded growth and reduction of immune response. In plants, Zn is an essential component of more than 300 enzymes including RNA polymerase, alkaline phosphatase, alcohol dehydrogenase, Cu/Zn superoxidase dismutase, and carbonic anhydrase. The accumulation of Zn in plants involves many genes and characterization of the role of these genes will be useful in biofortification. Here we report the identification and phlyogenetic and sequence characterization of the 23 members of the ZIP (ZRT, IRT like …

A Legume Biofortification Quandary: Variability And Genetic Control Of Seed Coat Micronutrient Accumulation In Common Beans, Matthew W. Blair, Paulo Izquierdo, Carolina Astudillo, Michael A. Grusak Jul 2013

A Legume Biofortification Quandary: Variability And Genetic Control Of Seed Coat Micronutrient Accumulation In Common Beans, Matthew W. Blair, Paulo Izquierdo, Carolina Astudillo, Michael A. Grusak

Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Faculty Research

Common beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.), like many legumes, are rich in iron, zinc, and certain other microelements that are generally found to be in low concentrations in cereals, other seed crops, and root or tubers and therefore are good candidates for biofortification. But a quandary exists in common bean biofortification: namely that the distribution of iron has been found to be variable between the principal parts of seed; namely the cotyledonary tissue, embryo axis and seed coat. The seed coat represents ten or more percent of the seed weight and must be considered specifically as it accumulates much of …

Pediatric Palliative Care For Youth With Hiv/Aids: Systematic Review Of The Literature, Megan L. Wilkins, Ronald H. Dallas, Kathleen E. Fanone, Maureen E. Lyon Jul 2013

Pediatric Palliative Care For Youth With Hiv/Aids: Systematic Review Of The Literature, Megan L. Wilkins, Ronald H. Dallas, Kathleen E. Fanone, Maureen E. Lyon

Pediatrics Faculty Publications

Improvement in treatment has led to decreased death in youth with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in developed countries. Despite this, youth with HIV are still at risk for increased mortality and morbidity compared with their uninfected counterparts. In developing countries, high numbers of youth die from acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS)-related illnesses due to lack of access to consistent antiretroviral treatment. As a result, pediatric palliative care is a relevant topic for those providing care to youth with HIV. A systematic review was conducted to gather information regarding the status of the literature related to pediatric palliative care and medical …

Social Entrepreneurship And Communication For Development And Social Change, Emile G. Mcanany Jul 2013

Social Entrepreneurship And Communication For Development And Social Change, Emile G. Mcanany

Communication

This article argues that social entrepreneurship has not yet been adequately defined even though it is increasingly being used in social change/development practice. Muhammad Yunus, creator of the Grameen Bank and microlending, and Bill Drayton, founder of the global change agency Ashoka, have practiced social change through social entrepreneurship for more than 30 years. Increasingly, the development community has been adopting many of its practices. The basic process of social entrepreneurship involves: defining a social goal for the solution of a serious problem; innovation in solving the problem; ability to expand the organization to serve large numbers of people (scaling …

Genetic Determinants Of Habitual Physical Activity And Overweight And Obesity, Harold Lee

Master's Theses

We tested 6 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with obesity from genome wide association studies for their association with physical activity (PA). Healthy European-American women (n=265) and men (n=230) (23.5±0.3yr, 24.6±0.2kg•m-2) were genotyped for MC4R (rs17782313), FTO (rs9939609), TMEM18 (rs6548238), NEGR1 (rs2815752), SH2B1 (rs7498665), and KCTD15 (rs11084753), and completed the Paffenbarger PA Questionnaire. We examined gene interactions by summing the number of obesity effect alleles. RESULTS: Normal weight subjects with MC4R T expended 1981.2±741.7kcal∙wk-1 less than non-carriers in total PA (p=0.008), 1825.9±650.2 kcal∙wk-1 less in sports/recreation (p=0.027), and 1231.3±552.7 kcal∙wk-1 less …

The Prison Child Dilemma: An Assessment Of Human Rights Infringements And Custodial Autonomy In Bolivian Prisons, Natasha Sheybani

UROP Posters

The primary focus of this study is to assess the healthcare conditions and availability for imprisoned women and children in Bolivia. The international community has recently been faced with an overwhelming dilemma of children being subjected unjustly to prison conditions due to circumstances of parental incarceration. Commonly referred to as prison children, these dependents, ranging from newborns to adolescent minors in age, often follow their convicted mothers to prison due to lack of a better alternative. Research has indicated that while there is a tremendous threat to the safety, development, and general wellbeing of innocent children residing in prison, one …

Bracketing In Phenomenology: Only Undertaken In The Data Collection And Analysis Process, Zenobia C.Y. Chan, Yuen-Ling Fung, Wai-Tong Chien Jul 2013

Bracketing In Phenomenology: Only Undertaken In The Data Collection And Analysis Process, Zenobia C.Y. Chan, Yuen-Ling Fung, Wai-Tong Chien

The Qualitative Report

Our aim with this article is to demonstrate how the researchers use bracketing as a method of demonstrating the validity after initiating a phenomenological study. Although bracketing is a method of demonstrating the validity of the da ta collection and analysis process in most phenomenological studies, how the researchers use them in practice is rarely demonstrated explicitly. We collected data through our experiences in preparing a phenomenological research study. We suggest that the concept of bracketing should be adopted upon initiating the research proposal and not merely in the data collection and analysis process. We propose four strategies for doing …

Mechanobiological Response Of Stem Cells Derived From The Periodontal Ligament And Dental Pulp To Compressive Loading, Anthony Nicholas Khoury

Open Access Theses

Among the debilitating disorders associated with the musculoskeletal system, osteoarthritis and osteogenesis are the most prevalent disorders. These diseases are commonplace among people throughout the world and related healthcare options do little to improve on the condition. While the causes are yet to be fully understood, novel approaches involving stem cell treatments are currently being evaluated. The understanding of metabolic, formation, and degradation processes is simply a stepping-stone leading to the formulation of an innovative treatment. The goal of this study was to assess the chondrogenic and osteogenic differentiation potential of stem cells derived from two different cell lines in …

Participants were asked to report information within the current school year. Data showed that children in foster care were involved in bullying primarily in the school setting. Implication for and the importance of further research within this field were discussed.

Validation Of The Adapted Cogstate Brief Battery In Hematopoietic Cell Transplant Patients, Bethany Gourley Jul 2013

Validation Of The Adapted Cogstate Brief Battery In Hematopoietic Cell Transplant Patients, Bethany Gourley

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

A small literature has documented cognitive deficits in adult hematopoietic cell transplant (HCT) survivors across the transplant trajectory, primarily occurring in memory, executive function, attention, and processing speed. Although HCT-associated cognitive decline occurring within one year of transplantation is well documented, only two studies have longitudinally investigated cognitive function in HCT survivors beyond one year. Furthermore, studies demonstrating neuropsychological decline have made use of numerous measures and varying impairment criteria, making the compilation of findings across studies challenging. Another difficulty with the current literature base is the use of traditional neuropsychological tests that are susceptible to practice effects and thus …
