Nursing Administration Of The 3-Ounce Water Swallow Screen, Heather L. Warner Dr. Dec 2013

Nursing Administration Of The 3-Ounce Water Swallow Screen, Heather L. Warner Dr.

Doctoral Dissertations

Introduction

Accurate and timely evaluation of swallowing is necessary to determine how to safely administer medications, maintain adequate nutrition and hydration, and avoid deleterious sequelae of prandial aspiration pneumonia. Use of a validated and reliable screening tool for determination of aspiration risk is a critical component of dysphagia management. The 3-ounce water swallow challenge (Suiter & Leder, 2008) is a validated and reliable screening tool that is well supported in the literature.

Statement of the Problem

While use of the 3-ounce water swallow challenge (Suiter & Leder 2008) administered by speech-language pathologists (SLPs) is supported by current research, who else …

The Effect Of 10-S Maximal Sprints Performed Prior To And Immediately Following Moderate Intensity Exercise On Glucoregulation Of Individuals With Type 1 Diabetes, Jennifer Maher Raeburn

Open Access Dissertations

Objective: To examine the efficacy of a 10-s maximal sprint performed immediately prior to and following a 40-min, moderate-intensity bout of exercise, as a means of maintaining plasma glucose concentration during both exercise and 120 min of recovery in those with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). Research Design and Methods: Seven moderately active males with T1DM performed a continuous graded exercise test on a cycle ergometer to determine peak power output (Wpeak). Subjects then reported to the laboratory on two separate occasions after an overnight 8-h fast and either rested (CON) or performed a 10-s maximal effort sprint (150% Wpeak) …

An Integrated Approach To Diabetes Prevention: Anthropology, Public Health, And Community Engagement, Janet Page-Reeves, Shiraz I. Mishra, Joshua Niforatos, Lidia Regino, Andrew Gingerich, Robert Bulten

The Qualitative Report

Diabetes is an enormous public health problem with particular concern within Hispanic communities and among individuals with low wealth. However, attempts to expand the public health paradigm to include social determinants of health rarely include analysis of social and contextual factors considered outside the purview of health research. As a result, conceptualization of the dynamics of diabetes health disparities remains shallow. We argue that using a holistic anthropological lens has the potential to offer insights regarding the nature of the interface between broader social determinants, health outcomes and health disparity. In a primarily Hispanic, immigrant community in Albuquerque, New Mexico, …

Vibrio Cholerae As A Predator: Lessons From Evolutionary Principles, Stefan Pukatzki, Daniele Provenzano Dec 2013

Vibrio Cholerae As A Predator: Lessons From Evolutionary Principles, Stefan Pukatzki, Daniele Provenzano

School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Biology)

Diarrheal diseases are the second-most common cause of death among children under the age of five worldwide. Cholera alone, caused by the marine bacterium Vibrio cholerae, is responsible for several million cases and over 120,000 deaths annually. When contaminated water is ingested, V. cholerae passes through the gastric acid barrier, penetrates the mucin layer of the small intestine, and adheres to the underlying epithelial lining. V. cholerae multiplies rapidly, secretes cholera toxin, and exits the human host in vast numbers during diarrheal purges. How V. cholerae rapidly reaches such high numbers during each purge is not clearly understood. We propose …

Kasky V. Nike: Lurking First Amendment Time Bomb For Marketers?, Michael J. Landry

Atlantic Marketing Journal

While attention has focused on the U. S. Supreme Court protecting corporate political speech, the Court has left untouched a California Supreme Court ruling of significance to marketers in their efforts to use advertising and public relations to offset what they view as unfair criticism. The case, Kasky v. Nike, stems from 1995 accusations that athletic footwear and apparel manufacturer Nike exploited and abused employees in Asian sweatshops. Through advertising and public relations efforts, Nike denied the claims. In 1998, Californian Mark Kasky sued, claiming Nike’s denials violated laws regarding unfair competition and false advertising and, because the denials were …

Preventive Health Care Information Delivery Systems: Is Social Media Relevant?, Joseph D. Cangelosi Dr., Edward Ranelli, David Kim

Atlantic Marketing Journal

Preventive Health Care (PHC) is the awareness and efforts a person undertakes to enhance and preserve physical, mental, and emotional health for today and the future. This research examines the importance of online delivery systems as sources of PHC information. It examines how health care consumers respond to various online PHC delivery systems, with a special emphasis on social media (SM). Specifically different demographic groups are compared to determine the importance each group places on various online delivery systems. The results of a survey showed the 35-44 year old group placing the greatest importance of retrieving PHC information online. Older …

Solvitur Ambulando: It Is Solved By Walking, Megan Dickerson

Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk

Though a significant portion of the conversation around “play provision” focuses on the quality and availability of community playgrounds, the majority of children’s play occurs in transitional spaces: sidewalks and other spaces not designed for children but used by children daily. This Perspective from the Field briefly reviews the late 19th century roots of the American playground and argues that though a focus on playground provision may draw attention to the importance of safe play spaces, a focus on playgrounds alone is limiting. Given playgrounds’ historical rootings, the omnipresent KFC (Kit, Fence and Carpet) playground begins to seem a …

Real School Gardens Program: Learning Gardens And Teacher Training To Improve Student Engagement And Academic Performance In Low-Performing Elementary Schools, Jeanne Mccarty

Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk

Children who grow up in poverty are less likely to graduate high school, enter college and find economic stability. REAL School Gardens believes the right educational opportunities – ones that engage and motive children to learn – can break this cycle. The REAL School Gardens Program builds learning gardens and offers teacher training to improve academic engagement and performance in low-income elementary schools. Since its launch, REAL School Gardens has partnered with 92 low-income schools, and preliminary findings show that 84% of students experiencing hands-on academic lessons in a REAL School Garden report high levels of engagement, specifically in math …

The Uptake Hydrogenase In The Unicellular Diazotrophic Cyanobacterium Cyanothece Sp. Strain Pcc 7822 Protects Nitrogenase From Oxygen Toxicity., Xiaohui Zhang, Debby Sherman, Louis A. Sherman

Department of Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Cyanothece sp. strain PCC 7822 is a unicellular, diazotrophic cyanobacterium that can produce large quantities of H2 when grown diazotrophically. This strain is also capable of genetic manipulations and can represent a good model for improving H2 production from cyanobacteria. To this end, a knockout mutation was made in the hupL gene (ΔhupL), and we determined how this would affect the amount of H2 produced. The ΔhupL mutant demonstrated virtually no nitrogenase activity or H2 production when grown under N2-fixing conditions. To ensure that this mutation only affected the hupL gene, …

Identity And Gender Constructs In "Written On The Body", Paige Van De Winkle Dec 2013

Identity And Gender Constructs In "Written On The Body", Paige Van De Winkle

Honors Theses

In Jeanette Winterson's novel Written on the Body, the ungendered narrator leads the reader through his/her love story with Louise. At moments, the narrator appears to reveal his/her gender, but these moments only reveal the reader's own assumptions about gender and identity which prove to be social constructions, and inconclusive evidence about the narator's gender. The novel shows that gender is not an inherent part of identity, and emphasizes themes that are universal and more important than gender differences, such as biology and the body. The body proves to be beautiful and universal, and gender is an insignificant part …

Rapid Test For Determining The Presence Of Oleic Acid, Serena Chambers

Honors Theses

Food allergies have a large impact on the lives of millions of people worldwide. More recently, the allergic reaction to peanuts and peanut-related products has become a popular issue since the reaction they cause is one of the most severe. Food related allergies claim roughly 250 lives each year in the United States alone, with peanut related allergies accounting for almost 60% percent of those deaths. This research is designed to produce a rapid test effective in determining the presence of oleic acid, an allergen found in peanut oil. Oleic acid makes up over 50% percent of the peanut oil …
