A "Time-Conscious" Christmas Carol, Jack Lundquist
A "Time-Conscious" Christmas Carol, Jack Lundquist
Theses and Dissertations
Shortly after Charles Dickens's A Christmas Carol was released in 1843, a tradition of adaptation began which has continued seemingly unabated to the present day. Consequently, the tale has become so widely known that one is arguably as likely to have first encountered the iconic miser Scrooge through any number of audio-visual adaptations as through the original work itself. Significant critical attention has been paid to the nature of Scrooge's drastic change from miser to philanthropist. Many would argue that the change, happening both literally and figuratively overnight, is not representative of a genuine psychological transformation. On Christmas day, 2010, …
Intercalibration Of Quikscat And Oscat Land Backscatter, John Colin Barrus
Intercalibration Of Quikscat And Oscat Land Backscatter, John Colin Barrus
Theses and Dissertations
The Ku-band SeaWinds-on-QuikSCAT scatterometer (QuikSCAT) operated continuously from 1999 to 2009. Though its primary mission was to estimate global ocean winds, QuikSCAT has proven useful in a variety of geophysical studies using land backscatter measurements. The end of the primary QuikSCAT mission in 2009 has prompted interest for continuing the QuikSCAT land dataset with other scatterometers. The Oceansat-2 scatterometer (OSCAT), launched in 2009, is a viable candidate for continuing the QuikSCAT time series because of the similarities of both sensors in function and design. An important difference in the sensors is that they operate at slightly different incidence angles. Continuing …
Greeting Message, Voice Intonation, And Reward Offered In Telemarketing Calls, Eilin Aimee Diaz Fondeur
Greeting Message, Voice Intonation, And Reward Offered In Telemarketing Calls, Eilin Aimee Diaz Fondeur
Theses
This study determined what types of appeals were more likely to gain compliance in telemarketing calls using two samples of adults and seniors. Eight different conditions were tested with combinations of greeting messages, tones of voice, and rewards offered. Significant differences were found in favor of using an eager greeting message and aggressive tone of voice. A vigilant greeting message and an aggressive tone of voice produced the greatest number of hang ups. A significant difference was found between offering a reward or not in the pitch for seniors but not for adults. Results provide support for using the peripheral …
Understory Vegetation Response To Mechanical Mastication Of Piñon And Juniper Woodlands, Jordan Ann Bybee
Understory Vegetation Response To Mechanical Mastication Of Piñon And Juniper Woodlands, Jordan Ann Bybee
Theses and Dissertations
Piñon and juniper encroachment and infilling can alter ecosystem processes and decrease resilience and resistance in sagebrush grasslands. Land managers employ a variety of techniques to eliminate these trees and mitigate their negative effects. Mechanical mastication or shredding is an increasingly popular method of removing these trees in Utah. It is a versatile treatment that can reduce canopy fuels, increase infiltration, and reduced sediment loss. We compared vegetation cover for annual and perennial vegetation functional groups on shredded and adjacent unshredded areas across a range of sites. Our approach was to categorize sites by ecological site type (encroachment or tree) …
Entertainment News Production: A Case Study, Ashley Derthick
Entertainment News Production: A Case Study, Ashley Derthick
Honors Theses
This study reviews literature on the construction of celebrities and the production of entertainment news, including how celebrities and coverage is deemed appropriate and relevant to cover. First, a brief overview of the entertainment news industry and the early stages of “celebrities” as historically referenced will be discussed along with the current significance of entertainment news. The phenomenon of stardom and the ways and procedures to which a celebrity becomes relevant will be detailed using mainly the work of Richard Dyer and the processes and theories he has outlined. The social impact of stardom including why the public is fascinated …
Evidence And Implications Of Weight Clustering Among Adolescents, Jennifer C. Acker
Evidence And Implications Of Weight Clustering Among Adolescents, Jennifer C. Acker
Master's Theses
Both obesity and eating disorders (ED) are increasingly conceptualized from an ecological model of health, which emphasizes the importance of individual and contextual variables. The peer context is particularly important for understanding adolescents’ weight related attitudes and behaviors; however, specific peer processes that impact obesity and EDs are unclear. Because social comparison is common during adolescence, how teens view their body in comparison to the body size of their close friends may be influential. The purpose of this study is to examine how adolescents’ perceptions of their friends’ body sizes relate to their weight-related cognitions, behaviors, and mental health symptoms, …

Role Of Nitrogen Defects In Nitrogen-Doped Carbon For Catalyst Support And Electric Double-Layer Capacitor, Sujan Shrestha
Role Of Nitrogen Defects In Nitrogen-Doped Carbon For Catalyst Support And Electric Double-Layer Capacitor, Sujan Shrestha
Doctoral Dissertations
Electrochemical applications of carbon are wide and varied. They are used as electrodes for batteries, capacitors and proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). This is possible due to their excellent electrical conductivity, variable nanostructure and cost-effectiveness. Besides these properties, physicochemical properties such as microstructure and surface chemistry play a significant role in the performance of carbon as electrodes in these applications. In supercapacitors or ultracapacitors, surface oxygen functionalities can increase capacitance due to non-faradaic reactions between redox couples such as quinine and hydroquinone while in PEMFCs, surface functionalities can determine catalyst size distribution and dispersion. However, surface oxygen functionalities also …

Lightning Strikes Twice: An Examination Of The Political Factors Associated With State-Level Death Sentences And Executions In The United States, 1930-2012, Ethan Christopher Amidon
Dissertations
Over the course of the last 50 years, scholars have emphasized the role that political processes play in shaping the nature of capital punishment practices. Empirical studies that have examined the relationship between political factors and capital punishment have attributed variation in the imposition of death sentences and the execution of offenders across jurisdictions in the United States to the politicization of criminal justice policies and practices and the shift in public sentiment towards more punitive ideologies that began in the 1970s. Even though historians have argued that capital punishment practices have always been shaped by political considerations, empirical research …

The Role Of Culture In Image Restoration: A Cross-Cultural Analysis Of The Strategies Used By John Edwards And Dominique Strauss-Khan, Isabel Artime
Open Access Theses
Image has become a commodity, an essential asset to both individuals and organizations. When image is threatened, we are compelled to do repair work to help us save face. In the 1990s, William Benoit developed an encompassing theory of image restoration, guiding us through the different options available to organizations and individuals involved in a crisis. However, the study of image restoration has traditionally remained highly ethnocentric, focused on Western culture and assuming that individuals and organizations respond to crises in similar ways, regardless of the particular aspects of the culture to which they belong. This study applies Hofstede's model …
