Teaching The Skills To Question: A Credit-Course Approach To Critical Information Literacy, Ian Beilin, Anne E. Leonard Dec 2013

Teaching The Skills To Question: A Credit-Course Approach To Critical Information Literacy, Ian Beilin, Anne E. Leonard

Urban Library Journal

Critical Information Literacy does not dispense with teaching ‘rules’ (of grammar, citation, research, writing, etc.), but also places these elements within larger frameworks of critical dialogue, creative thinking and learning, and political and historical inquiry. All of these elements together empower students far more than a mastering of the rules and techniques of research. “Research and Documentation for the Information Age” is the critical information literacy course currently offered by the Library department at New York City College of Technology. With the luxury of three credits, we emphasize integration of library skills into all facets of assignments rather than presenting …

Pre - Service Teachers’ Perceptions Of Disability As Represented In Children’S Television Programs--Research, Laura S. Clarke, Dusty Columbia Embury, Anna Epperly, Jennifer Christensen Dec 2013

Pre - Service Teachers’ Perceptions Of Disability As Represented In Children’S Television Programs--Research, Laura S. Clarke, Dusty Columbia Embury, Anna Epperly, Jennifer Christensen

Journal of Excellence in College Teaching and Learning

As colleges and universities prepare pre-service teachers to teach in inclusive classrooms, it is important to understand college students’ schema of diversity. Part of creating an inclusive classroom culture is to understand how children view similarities and differences in others, and how to create a culture of acceptance. One way to create a culture of understanding is to use media representations and popular children’s television shows as a springboard for conversation and acceptance, but before pre-service teachers can use media, they have to first understand the characteristics and qualification criteria for students with disabilities, and also how the community at …

Who Edits The Editors? Snake Hill And Archaeological Reports, Al B. Wesolowsky Dec 2013

Who Edits The Editors? Snake Hill And Archaeological Reports, Al B. Wesolowsky

Northeast Historical Archaeology

A review of Snake Hill: An Investigation of a Military Cemetery from the War of 1812, edited by Susan Pfeiffer and Ronald F. Williamson, provides a coign of vantage regarding two aspects of particular concern to historical archaeologists. One is the increasing number of historical cemeteries that, because of recent legislation and a broadening of research domains, are being investiagted by archaeologists. The other, closely related, aspect is the need for strong editorial oversight in preparing for the press reports that comprise the contributions of diverse specialists. Snake Hill was a good project that resulted in a report that, while …

Death At Snake Hill: A Review Of The Popular Report, Edward L. Bell Dec 2013

Death At Snake Hill: A Review Of The Popular Report, Edward L. Bell

Northeast Historical Archaeology

The popular account of an archaeological investigation of a War of 1812 cemetery in Ontario offers a fine example of the need to relay research results to our interested constituents. Popular reports should emphasize not only the scientific and historical value of archaeological resources, but also encourage public support for adequate preservation planning. Like politics, popular archaeological accounts are highly effective when they appeal to local constituents' interests.

A Retrospective On Archaeology At Fort William Henry, 1952-1993: Retelling The Tale Of The Last Of The Mohicans, David R. Starbuck Dec 2013

A Retrospective On Archaeology At Fort William Henry, 1952-1993: Retelling The Tale Of The Last Of The Mohicans, David R. Starbuck

Northeast Historical Archaeology

Fort William Henry was a British frontier fort constructed on the orders of Sir William Johnson in September of 1755 at the southern end of Lake George in upstate New York. After its destruction by a French army under the leadership of the Marquis de Montcalm in August of 1757, at which time many of its defenders were "massacred", the outline of the fort lay exposed until 1952 when archaeological excavations began to expose the charred ruins of the fort. Regrettably, while this was one of the largest excavations ever conducted on a site of the French and Indian War, …

Signs Of Autonomy: Facilitating Independence And Inquiry In Deaf Science Classrooms, Sami Kahn, Allan Feldman, Michele L. Cooke Dec 2013

Signs Of Autonomy: Facilitating Independence And Inquiry In Deaf Science Classrooms, Sami Kahn, Allan Feldman, Michele L. Cooke

Journal of Science Education for Students with Disabilities

Deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) persons are underrepresented in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). One of the major barriers to STEM careers is DHH students’ extremely low college graduation rates. While social and literacy barriers play a critical role in this phenomenon, student autonomy has also been cited as a major contributor. DHH students have been characterized as dependent learners, a learning style possibly reinforced by reliance on adults for disproportionate amounts of information, as well as a tendency of deaf educators to teach in highly structured, explicit manners. Dependent learning styles can impede autonomy …

Exploring The Oncogenic Role Of P27 In Regulating Tumor Progression, Dekuang Zhao Dec 2013

Exploring The Oncogenic Role Of P27 In Regulating Tumor Progression, Dekuang Zhao

Open Access Dissertations

p27 is a cell cycle regulator and an atypical tumor suppressor. However, p27 gene deletions or mutations are rarely observed in human cancers. Instead, p27 is frequently degraded or mislocalized to the cytoplasm in aggressive human cancers. Phosphorylation at T157 or T198 by different PI3K effector kinases leads to p27 cytoplasmic accumulation. However, the functional contribution of phosphorylated and cytoplasmic p27 to cancer progression remains unknown. By introducing a cell cycle defective (CK-) and double phosphomimetic p27 mutant (T157D/T198D or DD), we found that phosphorylation of p27 at T157 or T198 by PI3K/mTOR directly regulated tumor cell migration and invasion. …

It also describes students who have taken the class: native Spanish speakers, heritage speakers, returned missionaries, students from lower-levels, students with a background in another Romance language, and presents information as to how well the class has met the needs of each group of students, as well as suggestions to better meet student needs. Results indicate that there is a general satisfaction with the first …

Ambientalismos De La Vida Cotidiana: Políticas De Coalición, Reproducción Social Y Justicia Ambiental, Giovanna Di Chiro Dec 2013

Ambientalismos De La Vida Cotidiana: Políticas De Coalición, Reproducción Social Y Justicia Ambiental, Giovanna Di Chiro

Environmental Studies Faculty Works

This paper examines the intersectional, coalition politics forged by activists in US environmental justice and women's rights organisations. This coalitional politics articulates environmental and feminist concerns and rejects the limitations of a narrow-focused politics in favour of a more strategic, relational vision of social and environmental change. Framed by the Marxist-feminist concept of “social reproduction”, the analysis addresses the complex ways that globalised capitalism has transformed state and corporate responsibilities for social reproduction. The neoliberal policies of privatisation and deregulation have eroded the assurance of a liveable wage, affordable healthcare, decent education, breathable air, and clean water. Drawing on several …

Time For A Paradigm Shift: The New Acrl Information Literacy Competency Standards For Higher Education, Marcus Banks Dec 2013

Time For A Paradigm Shift: The New Acrl Information Literacy Competency Standards For Higher Education, Marcus Banks

Communications in Information Literacy

Academic librarians should expand our understanding of what counts as an authoritative resource, and be unafraid to challenge long-established wisdom in this domain. Wikipedia is far from perfect, but neither is the Encyclopedia Britannica. Wikipedia is updated daily, while the Britannica is no longer printed. If we cling to the Britannica as a symbol of authoritativeness, we will become obsolete ourselves. One way to prevent this fate is to reframe our collective thinking. In 2014 the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) will issue a revised version of the Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education. The task force …

Building Healthy Work Environments In Academic Communities And Healthcare Settings: The Ultimate "Giving Back To Move Forward", David P. Hrabe

Biennial Convention (CONV)

Session presented on: Monday, November 18, 2013:

The health and wellness of the American people is in critical condition. Although cardiovascular disease is technically the leading cause of death in Americans, behaviors are truly the number one killer, due to smoking, overeating, lack of physical activity, non-adherence to medications and suicidal gestures. Overweight and obesity will soon surpass tobacco as the number one cause of preventable death and disease in the United States. With the rapid increase in the prevalence of overweight and obesity, the Centers for Disease Control predict that one out of three Americans will have diabetes by …

The Cope Healthy Lifestyles Teen Randomized Controlled Trial: Immediate And Six Month Effects On High School Adolescents' Bmi, Psychosocial Outcomes And Academic Performance, Bernadette Mazurek Melnyk

Biennial Convention (CONV)

Session presented on: Sunday, November 17, 2013:

The high prevalence of overweight/obesity and mental health disorders in adolescents call for the urgent testing of theory-based preventive interventions that can be easily incorporated into high school curriculums. Overweight teens have multiple adverse health outcomes, including depression, anxiety, poor social skills and academic problems. Despite the prevalence of these problems, there are few rigorously conducted experimental studies that have tested health promotion interventions to improve the healthy lifestyle behaviors, psychosocial outcomes and academic performance of at-risk adolescents. The purpose of this symposium is to describe the immediate and six month post-intervention findings …

Purpose: A strong movement led by agencies invested in nursing and healthcare outcomes exists in the United States to increase the numbers of baccalaureate (BS) and higher degreed nurses and along with it a fervent advocacy for seamless academic progression. Outcomes are found to be more favorable with BS prepared RNs. Yet the current percent of associate degreed (AD) RNs who go on for BS and higher education is relatively low. What encourages some AD RNs to return for BS level education, while many more do not to return? This presentation aims to …

Session presented on: Sunday, November 17, 2013:

Clear, critical thinking and communication are imperatives in providing quality nursing care. We are challenged more than ever before with the effect of fatigue on outcomes. What is fatigue? It is a factor that has been linked to stress, safety, and performance decrements in numerous work environments. Fatigue is a reality in nursing. Every day, during every shift, nurses experience fatigue of mind, body and spirit. Workload, work hours, work structures and other factors can indirectly or directly cause fatigue within the profession. The public expects, and deserves, professional, caring, competent, and compassionate …

Proposing A Metaliteracy Model To Redefine Information Literacy, Trudi E. Jacobson, Thomas P. Mackey Dec 2013

Proposing A Metaliteracy Model To Redefine Information Literacy, Trudi E. Jacobson, Thomas P. Mackey

Communications in Information Literacy

Metaliteracy is envisioned as a comprehensive model for information literacy to advance critical thinking and reflection in social media, open learning settings, and online communities. At this critical time in higher education, an expansion of the original definition of information literacy is required to include the interactive production and sharing of original and repurposed digital materials. Metaliteracy provides an overarching and unifying framework that builds on the core information literacy competencies while addressing the revolutionary changes in how learners communicate, create, and distribute information in participatory environments. Central to the metaliteracy model is a metacognitive component that encourages learners to …
