Temporal Cycles, Sarah Anne Shearer
Temporal Cycles, Sarah Anne Shearer
LSU Master's Theses
Temporal Cycles explores how systems and changes in the human body parallel those in nature. The investigation takes the form of a print installation, which captures the essence of bodily processes. The serial nature of printmaking and the organic world plays an important role as biomorphic forms and hourglass shapes are repeated in numerous renditions that breathe, pulse, expand, wither, ovulate, and transform. Labyrinths of pattern, texture, and color connect the symbolic forms as the installation tracks the evolution of processes in the body, and the forms reveal themselves through their pictorial associations.

Quantification Of Total And Oil-Degrading Bacteria In Louisiana Marsh Sediment Following The Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill Using Cultivation And Real-Time Pcr Assays, Kristopher Nolan Ackoury
LSU Master's Theses
Although the impacts of the Deepwater Horizon (DWH) oil spill on the bacterial communities in several Gulf of Mexico habitats have been described, little if any research has been published evaluating the impacts of the spill on bacterial populations in the most severely oiled salt marsh soils of Barataria Bay, Louisiana. The aim of this study was to define the effects of the spill on the total and oil-degrading bacterial communities in these marshes. Using quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) and traditional cultivation methods bacterial communities from contaminated marsh soils were examined thirteen, twenty-two, and twenty-nine months after the initial oiling …
A Study On The Cleaning And Modification Of Metal Surfaces By Direct Current Cathodic Electrolytic Plasma Process, Jiandong Liang
A Study On The Cleaning And Modification Of Metal Surfaces By Direct Current Cathodic Electrolytic Plasma Process, Jiandong Liang
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The processes of surface treatments or surface modifications, more formally known as surface engineering, tailor the surfaces of engineering materials. The treatments are usually intended to change physical properties such as thermal or electrical conductivity, modify the surface dimensions, i.e. roughness, etc. A novel surface treatment method, Electrolytic Plasma Process (EPP), was developed for coating purposes, in its early developmental stage. In this work, the major effort is to avoid using any environmental hazardous chemical (coatings) and to extend such its application to some new fields. The general response of the substrate material under electrolytic plasma process was summarized including …

Treatments To Reduce The Risk Of Vibrio Species In Vitro And In Shucked Oysters, Ronson Renard Scott
LSU Master's Theses
"Vibrio parahaemolyticus" (Vp) and "Vibrio vulnificus" (Vv) are halophilic bacteria naturally occurring in estuarine environments that may concentrate in filter feeding shellfish. Consumption of raw or under-cooked seafood contaminated with Vp or Vv may lead to the development of acute gastroenteritis or fatal septicemia in at-risk individuals, respectively. This research encompassed two separate but related projects: evaluation of a low temperature pasteurization (LTP) technique for the reduction of Vp and Vv in commercial quantities of shucked oysters (SO) and the investigation of the efficacy of a citrus fruit extract, BIOSECUR® F440D in reducing/eliminating Vv in vitro. Commercially available SO ("Crassostrea …
Lowbrow Art : The Unlikely Defender Of Art History's Tradition, Joseph R. Givens
Lowbrow Art : The Unlikely Defender Of Art History's Tradition, Joseph R. Givens
LSU Master's Theses
This thesis has as twofold purpose. First, it will show that Lowbrow Art fits into the framework of art history and is worthy of art history’s attention. Second, it will argue for a revalidation of “traditional” art historical methods by proving that the methods are applicable to a marginalized contemporary art movement. Lowbrow Art is one of the most distinctive and vibrant art movements in the world, but there has yet to be a thorough examination of this style. Despite the undeniable worldwide success of the Lowbrow Art movement, it remains relatively obscure in academic discourse. Perhaps one reason why …

Surface Studies Of Organic Thin Films Using Scanning Probe Microscopy And Nanofabrication, Venetia Denae Lyles
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Porphyrins and metalloporphyrins have unique chemical and electronic properties and thus provide useful model structures for nanoscale studies of the role of chemical structure for electronic properties. Porphyrins have been proposed as viable materials for molecular-based information-storage devices, gas sensors, photovoltaic cells, organic light-emitting diodes and molecular wires. The function and efficiency of porphyrins in devices is largely attributable to molecular architecture and how the molecules are self-organized. Modifications of the porphyrin macrocycle, peripheral groups or bound metal ions can generate a range of electrical, photoelectrical or magnetic properties. The conductive properties are greatly influenced at the molecular level by …

Super-Aptamer Bio-Imprinted Hydrogels : An Investigation Into The Optimization And Characterization Of Cross-Linked Polymeric Materials Displaying Macromolecular Amplified Responses, Nicholas Alexander Gariano
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
It is becoming more important to detect ultra-low concentrations of analytes for biomedical, environmental, and national security applications. Equally important is that new methods should be easy to use, inexpensive, portable, and if possible allow detection using the naked eye. Detection of low concentrations of analytes generally cannot be achieved directly, but requires signal amplification by catalysts, macromolecules, metal surfaces or supramolecular aggregates. The rapidly progressing field of macromolecular signal amplification has been advanced using conjugated polymers, chirality in polymers, solvating polymers and polymerization/depolymerization strategies. The use of molecularly imprinted polymers is ideal for creation of novel sensors to meet …

LSU Doctoral Dissertations
In this dissertation, nanostructures of octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) and were prepared using particle lithography and evaluated using characterizations with atomic force microscopy (AFM). The nanostructures of OTS were used as a resist for patterning fibronectin, an extracellular matrix protein. Particle lithography provides a practical and reproducible approach to generate billions of nanostructures comprised of organic thin films or nanomaterials. A film of mesospheres can be applied as a surface mask to define the periodicity and size of nanopatterns using processes of self-assembly. A close-packed arrangement of mesospheres is produced spontaneously when monodisperse solutions of latex or silica are dried on a …

Enculturational Practices In The Teaching Of Proof In Mathematics, Indira Venkata Chillara
Enculturational Practices In The Teaching Of Proof In Mathematics, Indira Venkata Chillara
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Mathematics education reform is informed by constructivist theories that forefront student learning of concepts, and by sociocultural theories whose focus is on students’ mastery of mathematical practices. As Cobb (1994) pointed out, these theorizations are inconsistent with one another, leading to conflict as some theorists seek to promote their approach as the correct one. Alternatively, Cobb, and many others in the social constructivism or the situated cognition camps, seek some sort of integration or balancing of these priorities in pedagogical theorizing. Kirshner (2002, 2004, 2008) argued that instead of either selecting one theory or balancing/coordinating the two theories, we should …
Family-Related Risk Factors And Their Associations With Behavior Problems Of Children In Foster Care, Jena Leigh Ourso
Family-Related Risk Factors And Their Associations With Behavior Problems Of Children In Foster Care, Jena Leigh Ourso
LSU Master's Theses
Children in foster care are at risk for problems associated with breakdowns in their ecological system. Possible explanations for this may be that children’s daily interactions in early childhood are primarily with their parents. The relationship between child and parent (the dyad) is a crucial part of the way children grow and develop. Past research focuses on the child’s behavior problems as separate and isolated instead of focusing on the behavior problems as a symptom of the dysfunction in the dyad. This study explored the role of two specific risk factors for children in foster care and how these may …

Advancing The Field Of Polypeptoids Through The Synthesis Of Novel Architectures And Thermoresponsive Polymers, Samuel Henry Lahasky
Advancing The Field Of Polypeptoids Through The Synthesis Of Novel Architectures And Thermoresponsive Polymers, Samuel Henry Lahasky
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Peptidomimetic polymers are an emerging class of polymers that are structurally related to polypeptides. Due to their structural similarities, these polymers can be used to study some of the physical aspects of polypeptides (for example, protein folding). They are also increasingly being used in the fields of biology and drug-delivery. Some members of peptidomimetic polymers include polyacrylamides, polyoxazolines and polypeptoids. Polymer synthesis and characterization has been performed for both polyacrylamides and polyoxazolines, with research dating back to the 1950s and 1980s respectively. Research in the field of polypeptoids has not been as extensive; however, emerging synthetic strategies are allowing for …

Toward Digitizing The Human Experience : A New Resource For Natural Language Processing, Jerry Scott Weltman
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
A long-standing goal of Artificial Intelligence is to program computers that understand natural language. A basic obstacle is that computers lack the common sense that even small children acquire simply by experiencing life, and no one has devised a way to program this experience into a computer. This dissertation presents a methodology and proof-of-concept software system that enables non-experts, with some training, to create simple experiences. For the purposes of this dissertation, an experience is a series of time-ordered comic frames, annotated with the changing intentional and physical states of the characters and objects in each frame. Each frame represents …

Effects Of A Brief Mindfulness Intervention On Negative Affect And Urge To Drink Among College Student Drinkers, Christine Vinci
Effects Of A Brief Mindfulness Intervention On Negative Affect And Urge To Drink Among College Student Drinkers, Christine Vinci
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Problematic college student drinking can predict the subsequent development of severe alcohol use patterns. Several theories have proposed that negative affect (NA) plays a large role in the maintenance of substance use behaviors – a phenomenon supported in laboratory-based and clinical studies. It has been demonstrated that mindfulness meditation can improve the regulation of NA, suggesting that mindfulness may be very beneficial in treating problematic substance use behavior. The present study utilized a brief mindfulness intervention, followed by a NA mood induction in a sample of college student problematic drinkers (N = 207). A three by two by three factorial …

Nanoindentation Characterization Of Clay Minerals And Clay-Based Hybrid Bio-Geomaterials, Rohit Raj Pant
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Layered hydrous aluminosilicates are key constituent minerals in rocks, soils, and other parts of the Earth crust. Understanding mechanical properties of these aluminosilicates is crucial for seismic study, stability of parent rocks and geomaterials, and for geophysical subsurface exploration. Recently, growing prospects of clay based nanocomposites have renewed further interest in understanding the fundamental elastic and plastic properties of hydrous aluminosilicates. Their distinct, nanoscale layered crystal structure is known to result in anisotropic responses to loading, however, owing to their tiny sizes; it is a significant challenge to determine the anisotropic properties. There is a little data available in the …

Phase Composition Control Of Calcium Phosphate Nanoparticles For Tunable Drug Delivery Kinetics And Treatment Of Osteomyelitis. Part 2: Antibacterial And Osteoblastic Response, Vuk Uskoković, Tejal A. Dasai
Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research
Osteomyelitis has been traditionally treated by the combination of long-term antibiotic therapies and surgical removal of diseased tissue. The multifunctional material was developed in this study with the aim to improve this therapeutic approach by: (a) enabling locally delivered and sustained release of antibiotics at a tunable rate, so as to eliminate the need for repetitive administration of systemically distributed antibiotics; and (b) controllably dissolving itself, so as to promote natural remineralization of the portion of bone lost to disease. We report hereby on the effect of the previously synthesized calcium phosphates (CAPs) with tunable solubilities and drug release time …

Development Of A Framework For Scaling Surfactant Enhanced Co₂ Flooding From Laboratory Scale To Field Implementation, Gbolahan I. Afonja
Development Of A Framework For Scaling Surfactant Enhanced Co₂ Flooding From Laboratory Scale To Field Implementation, Gbolahan I. Afonja
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The efficiency of the use of CO2 as a displacement fluid in oil recovery is hampered by the existence of an unfavorable mobility ratio that is caused by the large difference in viscosity between the injected fluid (CO2) and the reservoir fluids. This viscosity contrast results in early CO2 breakthrough, viscous fingering, gas channeling, and consequently, the inability of CO2 to effectively contact much of the reservoir and the oil it contains. Improvement of sweep efficiency and mobility control in CO2 injection require solutions to these problems. The use of surfactants and other chemical means for mobility control has been …
