The Walker Art Center Website : A Study Of Cultural Administration, Rae Jung Wilburn
The Walker Art Center Website : A Study Of Cultural Administration, Rae Jung Wilburn
LSU Master's Theses
On December 1, 2011, the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota, launched a new website that presented a completely new format for its museum’s online presence and a new strategy for museums in general. The Walker’s new site adopts an online journalistic platform for its homepage, which it dubbed its “front page.” It functions as an online arts magazine showcasing the museum’s activities, exhibitions, informational resources and collections material, but also placed in a wider field of related cultural material aggregated from other online sources. Indeed, the new website is distinct from any previous museum website on these two points: …
On-The-Fly Tracing For Data-Centric Computing : Parallelization, Workflow And Applications, Lei Jiang
On-The-Fly Tracing For Data-Centric Computing : Parallelization, Workflow And Applications, Lei Jiang
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
As data-centric computing becomes the trend in science and engineering, more and more hardware systems, as well as middleware frameworks, are emerging to handle the intensive computations associated with big data. At the programming level, it is crucial to have corresponding programming paradigms for dealing with big data. Although MapReduce is now a known programming model for data-centric computing where parallelization is completely replaced by partitioning the computing task through data, not all programs particularly those using statistical computing and data mining algorithms with interdependence can be re-factorized in such a fashion. On the other hand, many traditional automatic parallelization …
The Reduction And Reoxidation Of Ceria : A Natural Abundance Oxygen Isotope Approach, Justin Alan Hayles
The Reduction And Reoxidation Of Ceria : A Natural Abundance Oxygen Isotope Approach, Justin Alan Hayles
LSU Master's Theses
Ceria (CeO2) is a fluorite type oxide that has been used extensively as an oxygen storage media in three-way catalysts, as an oxygen partial pressure regulator, as a fuel additive for the reduction of soot and for the production of syn-gas from water and carbon dioxide. It is known that exposing ceria powders to low pO2 and/or high temperature conditions will cause ceria to partially reduce. This partial reduction leads to the formation of oxygen vacancies, which up to a limit, do not significantly influence the crystal structure. When partially reduced ceria is exposed to high pO2 environments, such as …
An Analysis Of Femininity : How Popular Female Characters In The Media Portray Contemporary Womanhood, Stephanie Ortego Roussell
An Analysis Of Femininity : How Popular Female Characters In The Media Portray Contemporary Womanhood, Stephanie Ortego Roussell
LSU Master's Theses
The impact of the media on adolescent girls has received greater theoretical, legal and societal focus over the last few decades. Several studies link the development of women’s gendered identities, healthy sexual activity and self-efficacy to how the media portray women. Restrictive or unrealistic themes of womanhood or femininity in the media can impact a young girl’s social construction of identity and provide limited examples of what it means to be a woman in today’s society. This study qualitatively examines femininity in contemporary media by analyzing—via textual analysis and focus groups—how popular female characters embody, portray and promote different conceptualizations …
Dragged Into The Future : How Interent Communications And Media Legitimacy Facilitate Lagging Gender Norms, Skylar C. Gremillion
Dragged Into The Future : How Interent Communications And Media Legitimacy Facilitate Lagging Gender Norms, Skylar C. Gremillion
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Social interaction is the driving force of human society and extends far beyond one-on-one conversations – it is how we learn about the behavioral expectations, beliefs and symbols of our culture. Sometimes these beliefs and expectations are related to celebrations and events that bring cultures together. Through interaction we learn that we are expected to bring a gift to a birthday party and why we even choose to celebrate birthdays at all. Yet that same framework – which is tied to the way humans categorize each other to make interaction easier – also allows cultures to share biases about different …
A Microfluidic Bacteria Culturing Device With Maldi Mass Spectrometry Detection, Pratap Reddy Machavaram Siva
A Microfluidic Bacteria Culturing Device With Maldi Mass Spectrometry Detection, Pratap Reddy Machavaram Siva
LSU Master's Theses
A novel microfluidic device was developed for bacterial cell culturing using mass spectrometry as the detector. One of the challenges in proteomics is to achieve high sensitivity in the identification of proteins in complex samples with widely varying concentrations. The main limitations for proteomic studies are relatively slow and labor-intensive steps such as cell culturing and protein digestion of small sample quantities. Microfluidics is a promising approach to increase throughput and to reduce the time-consuming steps that are necessary for proteomics. When an analytical detection method is combined with microfluidics it can overcome limitations that are important in the analysis …
Uncovering Nodes In The Transnational Social Networks Of Hispanic Workers, James Powell Chaney
Uncovering Nodes In The Transnational Social Networks Of Hispanic Workers, James Powell Chaney
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation addresses the little studied but socially salient processes through which Latino migrant laborers find work, travel, and obtain documentation using transnational social networks spanning between their places of origin and destinations in the United States. This project focuses on the creation and maintenance of these transnational linkages with a particular interest in their expansion into locations throughout American South, the region with the highest growth rates of Hispanic populations. The aim is to understand how such migrant-labor processes influence migratory patterns and result in place creation, both in these case studies and more generally. The case studies in …

These methods improve existing classifiers to nearly optimal classifiers.
The Shoulder Suspension Of Bipedal Humans And The Head Suspension Of Quadrupedal Cats : A Reconstruction Of Macroevolutionary Changes Of Complex Systems Based On Nautral Experiments, Comparative Anatomy, And Biomechanical Analyses Of Extant Organisms, Michelle L. Osborn
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The biological processes in macroevolutionary transformations, which result in the origin of new species and supraspecific taxa, are not directly observable in organisms with long reproductive generations and need to be extrapolated and reconstructed from physiological, anatomical, and microevolutionary processes. This dissertation reconstructs the anatomical and biomechanical changes that affected the head-neck-shoulder apparatus during the macroevolutionary transformation of a quadrupedal mammal to a bipedal one by studying two model organisms, namely the human and the cat. I hypothesize that the anatomical differences in the head-neck-shoulder apparatus of the two organisms are caused by different force regimes that act on them. …

Alexandre Iacovleff : "Exotic Academicism" In Europe And America, (1914-1938), Kara Blanken
LSU Master's Theses
Art historians often refer to the interwar period of the early twentieth century as la retour à l’ordre. The twenty-one years from 1918 to 1939 represent a return to sober academicism, order, and classicism in art following the destruction and uncertainty caused by the First World War. This mentality of artistic “stability,” combined with the Western fascination for exotic cultures of Africa and Asia, formed the hallmarks of the Art Déco style. Alexandre Iacovleff was a Russian artist who embodied the international artistic spirit of Art Déco from 1914 until his death in 1938. His paintings and drawings, rendered in …

Peel-Off Lawyers: Legal Professionals In India's Corporate Law Firm Sector, Jayanth K. Krishnan
Peel-Off Lawyers: Legal Professionals In India's Corporate Law Firm Sector, Jayanth K. Krishnan
Articles by Maurer Faculty
This study is about hierarchy within the legal profession – how it presents itself, how it is retained, and how it is combated. The socio-legal literature on this subject is rich, with many roots tracing back to Professor Marc Galanter’s famous early 1970s article on the ‘Haves’ and ‘Have-Nots.’ Galanter’s piece and the work of those influenced by him rightly suggest that resources – institutional, financial, and demographic – contribute to whether lawyers are, and remain as, part of the ‘Haves.’ Yet, while resources of course greatly matter, as this study will argue other forces are significant as well. One …
The Employment And Economic Advancement Of African-Americans In The Twentieth Century, Kenneth G. Dau-Schmidt, Ryland Sherman
The Employment And Economic Advancement Of African-Americans In The Twentieth Century, Kenneth G. Dau-Schmidt, Ryland Sherman

In this article we examine the progress of African–Americans in the American labour market over the course of the twentieth century. We trace their progress as African-Americans moved from low-skill low-wage jobs in southern agriculture to a panoply of jobs including high-skill, high-wage jobs in industries and occupations across the country. We also document the migrations and improvements in educational achievement that have made this progress possible. We examine the progress yet to be made and especially the problems of lack of education and incarceration suffered by African–American males. Finally, we examine the importance of anti-discrimination laws and affirmative action in …
Validation Of The Remote Food Photography Method To Quantify Intake Of Infant Formula, Abby Duhe
Validation Of The Remote Food Photography Method To Quantify Intake Of Infant Formula, Abby Duhe
LSU Master's Theses
Childhood obesity rates have more than tripled since the 1970s, and this increased prevalence is cause for concern as childhood obesity increases the risk of adult obesity and other comorbid diseases. Evidence suggests that the origins of obesity can be identified in infanthood. Accurate methods of assessing food intake in infants can be utilized to establish effective feeding practices in infanthood and to assess the relationship between infant feeding practices and the risk of childhood obesity. Current methods are either subjective or have limited ability for widespread use beyond clinical research settings due to cost and high burden. The aim …

Rube Tube : Cbs, Rural Sitcoms, And The Image Of The South, 1957-1971, Sara K. Eskridge
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation examines the factors that led to the creation of the CBS rural comedy boom in the 1960s, as well as the reasons for its demise. For years, historians have dismissed the rural comedy craze as the networks catering to the growing number of southern viewers in the late 1950s. However, there were not enough to southern viewers to dictate a network’s entire programming schedule for the better part of a decade. Also, rural comedy was the domain of a single network, CBS. Had it really been a major thematic trend, all networks would have at least attempted to …
The Dimensions Of Judicial Impartiality, Charles G. Geyh
The Dimensions Of Judicial Impartiality, Charles G. Geyh
Articles by Maurer Faculty
Scholars have traditionally analyzed judicial impartiality piecemeal, in disconnected debates on discrete topics. As a consequence, current understandings of judicial impartiality are balkanized and muddled. This Article seeks to reconceptualize judicial impartiality comprehensively, across contexts. In an era when "we are all legal realists now," perfect impartiality-the complete absence of bias or prejudice-is at most an ideal; "impartial enough" has, of necessity, become the realistic goal. Understanding when imperfectly impartial is nonetheless impartial enough is aided by conceptualizing judicial impartiality in three distinct dimensions: a procedural dimension, in which impartiality affords parties a fair hearing; a political dimension, in which …
The American Judicature Society And Judicial Independence: Reflections At The Century Mark, Charles G. Geyh
The American Judicature Society And Judicial Independence: Reflections At The Century Mark, Charles G. Geyh
Articles by Maurer Faculty
A logical starting point in a symposium commemorating AJS at the century mark is with judicial independence – a sweeping topic with a complex architecture that gives structure to the AJS mission. The many and varied contributions that AJS has made to the administration of justice over the past one hundred years can best be understood and appreciated as means to further the overarching objective of promoting an independent and accountable judiciary.

Stable, aqueous, red-to-near infrared emission is critical for the use of silicon nanoparticles (Si NPs) in biological fluorescence assays, but such Si NPs have been difficult to attain. We report a synthesis and surface modification strategy that protects Si NPs and preserves red photoluminescence (PL) in water for more than 6 mo. The Si NPs were synthesized via high temperature reaction, liberated from an oxide matrix, and functionalized via hydrosilylation to yield hydrophobic particles. The hydrophobic Si NPs were phase transferred to water using the surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) with retention of red PL. CTAB apparently serves a double role …

ABSTRACT Chapter 1 describes the most stable isomer of porphyrin called porphycene. In this chapter photodynamic therapy (PDT) is explained, and the application of porphycenes in PDT is also described. Other biological applications and its uses in catalysis are also summarized here. The general chemical reactions of porphycenes are also explained. Chapter 2 involves the synthesis of pyrroles and bipyrroles. Functionalization of pyrrollic substituents is demonstrated using organometallic coupling reactions like Stille coupling and Grubbs olefin metathesis. The synthesis of divinyl bipyrroles is intended to provide an important precursor to porphycene synthesis via ring closing metathesis using Grubbs catalyst. Chapter …
Finite Element Modeling Of Hot-Mix Asphalt Performance In The Laboratory, Hao Ying
Finite Element Modeling Of Hot-Mix Asphalt Performance In The Laboratory, Hao Ying
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The theoretical investigation of Hot-Mix Asphalt (HMA) response in the dynamic modulus and the semi-circular bending (SCB) laboratory test procedures is necessary to understand the influence of various design parameters on the performance of the mix. In addition, laboratory tests such as the dynamic complex modulus assume that this material can be dealt with as a homogeneous material while overlooking the particulate nature of this composite. The ultimate goal of this study is to develop an advanced theoretical framework, based on three-dimensional (3D) finite element (FE) methods and digital image analysis techniques to describe the behavior of HMA in two …

Pore-To-Continuum Multiscale Modeling Of Two-Phase Flow In Porous Media, Qiang Sheng
Pore-To-Continuum Multiscale Modeling Of Two-Phase Flow In Porous Media, Qiang Sheng
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Abstract Pore-scale network modeling using 3D X-ray computed tomographic images (digital rock technology) has become integral to both research and commercial simulations in recent years. While this technology provides tremendous insight into pore-scale behavior, computational methods for integrating the results into practical, continuum-scale models remain fairly primitive. The general approach is to run pore-scale models and continuum models sequentially, where macroscopic parameters are simulated using the pore-scale models and then used in the continuum models as if they have been obtained from laboratory experiments. While a sequential coupling approach is appealing in some cases, an inability to run the two …

Development Of Soluble Dietary Fiber Based Nanofiber Delivery System For Alpha-Tocopherol, Juan Li
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The bioactive compound vitamin E is essential for human health. It has been reported to reduce the risk of cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and aging. One of the main concerns about the availability of vitamin E is the stability, or lack thereof, associated with the processing and storage of it. Degradation could occur when vitamin E is exposed to light, temperature or oxygen, which results in the loss of efficacy. Also, the application of vitamin E is limited because of its poor solubility in aqueous media. Among the tocopherols contained in the vitamin E family, α-tocopherol (α -TOC) has the …

Legislative text is distinguished by the frequency with which it specifies the meaning of the words it employs. More than 25,000 terms are defined in the United States Code alone. In few other contexts is there a perceived need to so carefully and repeatedly clarify meaning. This Article examines the roles played by definitions in a reader's understanding and application of a legislative text; it demonstrates that the effects of defining are not as straightforward as we might assume. The discussion is framed by the distinction between legislation as a communication vehicle and as an instrument of governance. In some …
