The Benefits And Barriers Of Physical Activity Among College Students, Berkley Henshaw, James G. Archibald
The Benefits And Barriers Of Physical Activity Among College Students, Berkley Henshaw, James G. Archibald
Journal of Higher Education & Student Affairs
According to the DHHS, one third of adults in the United States do not participate in enough physical activity (Coronado, Sos, Talbot, Do & Taylor, 2010). "Physical inactivity is a serious health problem among university students," (Irwin, 2007, p.40). This poses a great danger to students who have serious health issues. "Thirty-seven percent of the college student population is overweight, with 11 % being obese," (Berg, An, Ahluwalia, 2013, p. 389). Even though the benefits of participating in physical activity are proven to increase psychological and physiological health, many college students do not meet the minimal recommendations for physical activity …

Foreign Language Learning In A Non-School Environment: Effects Of Simulated Immersion Training On Affective Factors In Learners' Experience, Eunsook Mcniel-Cho
Doctoral Dissertations
This study explored the effects of immersion training on the learner's affective behaviors such as motivation and attitude, anxiety, and self-confidence in foreign language acquisition at the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center. Much research has been conducted on the effectiveness of immersion programs, but no previous research examined a short-term simulated immersion training that is integrated into a language course curriculum. Furthermore, no prior research exists on the effects of immersion on affective factors among military linguists.
This research method consisted of mixed quantitative and qualitative methods utilizing pretest score (DLAB), surveys, observations, and interviews. The study design was …
Asian American Women Leaders In The Pacific Coast: Their Pathway To Presidency In Two-Year Institutions, Joan Torne
Asian American Women Leaders In The Pacific Coast: Their Pathway To Presidency In Two-Year Institutions, Joan Torne
Doctoral Dissertations
The field of education continues to see an underrepresentation of women as presidents of colleges and universities especially Asian Americans in general. In comparison with other racial and ethnic groups, Asian Americans are the only group not equally represented in high executive positions such as the presidential. In addition, women, including Asian American women, continue to hold, disproportionately to men, fewer leadership positions in the workplace of today.
It was the intent of this qualitative study to gain an understanding the reasons for the slow progress of Asian Americans in obtaining presidential positions in higher education with the focus on …
Complicating Whiteness: Identifications Of Veteran White Teachers In Multicultural Settings, Anthony Miele
Complicating Whiteness: Identifications Of Veteran White Teachers In Multicultural Settings, Anthony Miele
Doctoral Dissertations
A scrupulous search of whiteness literatures in relation to multicultural education reveals a preponderance of scholarship noting White privilege and race evasiveness. Given contrasting scholarship arguing White identity as complicated, multifarious, and bound to social and historical context, concurrent with a dearth of scholarship that examines such complexity, studies that explore and complicate White racial identity are of vital importance in advancing discourse around whiteness in education. Moreover, studies on veteran White teachers in multicultural settings explore professional identifications that have emerged along a continuum within authentic educational contexts rather than pre-service teachers in decontextualized settings.
Exploring identifications of veteran …
The Theological Literacy, Beliefs, Attitudes, And Practices Of Lay Catholic Administrators Of The Catholic Secondary Schools In The Awka Diocese Of Nigeria, James Okafor
Doctoral Dissertations
Christ's call to evangelization is a mission the Catholic Church has perpetuated throughout history with its reliance upon its schools. In the 19th century, Catholic missionaries evangelized and catechized the Nigerian Igbo people through the schools they built. In 1970, the Nigerian government confiscated these schools, and converted them to secular institutions. It also closed Catholic Teacher Training Colleges.
In response to this, the Nigerian Conference of Catholic Bishops built diocesan Catholic schools, and those who ministered within them were charged with knowing and integrating the six tasks of catechesis--knowledge of the faith, liturgical life, moral formation, prayer, communal life, …
Being In Deep, Authentic, Dramatic Celebration: Narratives Of Community Cultural Workers For Social Change, Mi'jan Celie Tho-Biaz
Being In Deep, Authentic, Dramatic Celebration: Narratives Of Community Cultural Workers For Social Change, Mi'jan Celie Tho-Biaz
Doctoral Dissertations
The common discourse in the field of education in the United States during the years 2002 through 2013 centered on the approach of making schools accountable for their students' performance, while aiming to bring proficiency to all students regardless of their socio-economic background. Prior to this study, little research existed on cultural workers who teach, and their associated outcomes with marginalized populations of learners. To fill this gap in the research literature, this study explored the question: How do cultural workers define their work, and in what ways do they connect their stories to the current academic discourse on the …

"These Rights Go Beyond Borders And Pieces Of Paper": Urban High School Teachers And Newcomer Immigrant Youth Engaging In Human Rights Education, Juliet A. Schiller
Doctoral Dissertations
This qualitative study explored the ways that two ninth and tenth grade teachers and their newcomer immigrant students engaged in HRE using elements of critical pedagogy at an urban pubic high school. Research data included eight months of classroom observations and interviews with two teachers and nineteen of their students across four of their classrooms. In this study, the complexity of engaging in HRE with newcomer students was brought to light as two teachers enacted their vision of critical pedagogy, human rights content and learning goals, as well as English language instruction.
The findings in this study conveyed that engaging …
Performance Anxiety: Copyright Embodied And Disembodied, Rebecca Tushnet
Performance Anxiety: Copyright Embodied And Disembodied, Rebecca Tushnet
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
The primary economic and cultural significance of copyright today comes from works and rights that weren’t contemplated by the Framers of the Constitution’s Copyright Clause. Performance—both as protected work and as right—is where much of copyright’s expansion has had its greatest impact, as new technologies have made it possible to fix performances in records and films and as cultural change has propelled recorded music and audiovisual works to the forefront of the copyright industries. Yet copyright has never fully conceptualized performance, and this has led to persistent confusion about what copyright protects.
One key problem of performance from copyright’s perspective …

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
International law has responded weakly to the inequities in health care, public health, and the broader determinates of health that collectively cause the greatest loss of lives and human potential every year. Approximately one-third of global deaths can be attributed to enduring and unconscionable inequities. Despite significant progress in improving global health over the past several decades, these inequities persist. Current global governance for health is inadequate to the task of resolving these inequities, from lack of accountability and enforcement to inadequate funding and the absence of leadership required to respond to the threats to health that arise from other …
Make Me Walk, Make Me Talk, Do Whatever You Please: Barbie And Exceptions, Rebecca Tushnet
Make Me Walk, Make Me Talk, Do Whatever You Please: Barbie And Exceptions, Rebecca Tushnet
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
Barbie represents an aspiration to an ideal and also a never-ending mutability. Barbie is the perfect woman, and she is also grotesque, plasticized hyperreality, presenting a femininity exaggerated to the point of caricature. Barbie’s marketplace success, combined with (and likely related to) her overlapping and contradictory meanings, also allow her to embody some key exceptions to copyright and trademark law. Though Mattel’s lawsuits were not responsible for the initial recognition of those exceptions, they illuminate key principles and contrasts in American law. Mattel attempted to use both copyright and trademark to control the meaning of Barbie, reflecting a trend towards …

This essay reviews Power and Constraint: The Accountable Presidency After 9/11 by Jack Goldsmith (2012).
With The Terror Presidency, Professor Jack Goldsmith wrote, hands down, the very best analysis of the national security issues surrounding President George W. Bush's tenure. In Power and Constraint: The Accountable Presidency After 9/11, Goldsmith returns to the same set of problems, but adopts a different tack. He argues that the modern wartime Executive is constrained in new ways beyond the traditional system of checks and balances, and that these new constraints combine to create an effective system that checks executive power. Though …
The Wages Of Crying Judicial Restraint, Randy E. Barnett
The Wages Of Crying Judicial Restraint, Randy E. Barnett
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
Five Justices voted to affirm the proposition that the Constitution creates a government of limited and enumerated powers and that the courts will enforce those limits. To understand why this victory was possible, it is important to understand that there are not just two versions of federalism, pre‐New Deal and post‐New Deal. There is also a third version. The failure to recognize the third version goes a long way to explain why most of my academic colleagues predicted that the right would have no chance to prevail in our constitutional challenge to the individual insurance mandate.
The first version of …
The Rhetoric Of Email In Law Practice, Kristen Konrad Robbins-Tiscione
The Rhetoric Of Email In Law Practice, Kristen Konrad Robbins-Tiscione
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
This article responds to and appears alongside an article by Professor Kirsten Davis in the December 2013 issue of the Oregon Law Review. An interesting debate has arisen among legal writing faculty with respect to the primary form of communication today between attorneys, and between attorneys and clients. Although most legal writing faculty agree that teaching traditional memoranda continues to have pedagogical benefits for first-year students, there is disagreement on how to conceptualize and teach the use of email memoranda in law practice. Professor Davis argues that to think of and label “email memoranda” as something different from traditional memoranda …
Cardiologists Referring Patients For Periodontal Evaluation, Valerie Maxey
Cardiologists Referring Patients For Periodontal Evaluation, Valerie Maxey
EWU Masters Thesis Collection
"The association of periodontal disease and atherosclerotic vascular disease is proven in current scientific literature, however there is no empirical evidence that suggests cardiologists recognize this association or collaborate with dentists to address this association for patients. This study utilized qualitative research method to investigate the current beliefs and practices of five cardiologists. Using a standardized open-ended interview technique, the cardiologists were asked 12 interview questions designed to answer three research questions. Grounded theory method of analysis was followed in order to generate theories to answer the research questions. Results imply that while cardiologists accept the oral-systemic link as associative …

A Genetic Screen To Identify Novel Helicobacter Pylori Virulence Factors Using Saccharomyces Cerevisiae As A Model Eukaryotic Cell, Amelia M. Bothwell
EWU Masters Thesis Collection
"Helicobacter pylori is a spiral, gram-negative bacterium that colonizes the stomachs of approximately 50% of the World's population overall and is a major etiological agent of human gastric adenocarcinoma. Of infected individuals, only 10-15% develop severe gastric disease due to environmental factors, host genetic factors, and more significantly, genetic differences in the infecting H pylori strains. Type I strains of H pylori contain a 40-kb cytotoxin-associated pathogenicity island (cag PAl) that encodes and secretes the CagA protein into host epithelial cells via a type IV secretion system. To date, CagA is the only identified effector protein of the cag PAI. …

From Hypatia To Victor Hugo To Larry And Sergey: ‘All The World's Knowledge’ And Universal Authors’ Rights, Jane C. Ginsburg
Faculty Scholarship
Access to ‘all the world’s knowledge’ is an ancient aspiration; a less venerable, but equally vigorous, universalism strives for the borderless protection of authors’ rights. Late 19th-century law and politics brought us copyright universalism; 21st-century technology may bring us the universal digital library. But how can ‘all the world’s knowledge’ be delivered, on demand, to users anywhere in the world (with Internet access), if the copyrights of the creators and publishers of many of those works are supposed to be enforceable almost everywhere in the world? Does it follow that the universal digital library of the near future threatens copyright …

Broad-Spectrum Antibacterial Properties Of Metal-Ion Doped Borate Bioactive Glasses For Clinical Applications, Megan Ottomeyer
Broad-Spectrum Antibacterial Properties Of Metal-Ion Doped Borate Bioactive Glasses For Clinical Applications, Megan Ottomeyer
Masters Theses
"Bioactive glasses with antimicrobial properties can be implemented as coatings on medical devices and implants, as well as a treatment for tissue repair and prevention of common hospital-acquired infections such as MRSA A borate-containing glass, B3, is also undergoing clinical trials to assess wound-healing properties. The sensitivities of various bacteria to B3, B3-Ag, B3-Ga, and B3-I bioactive glasses were tested. In addition, the mechanism of action for the glasses was studied by spectroscopic enzyme kinetics experiments, Live-Dead staining fluorescence microscopy, and luminescence assays using two gene fusion strains of Escherichia coli.
It was found that gram-positive bacteria were more …
Liquid Phase Sintering Of 20bi(Zn₀.₅Ti₀.₅)O₃-80batio₃ Dielectrics With Bismuth-Zinc-Borate And Bismuth Borosilicate Glasses, David I. Shahin
Liquid Phase Sintering Of 20bi(Zn₀.₅Ti₀.₅)O₃-80batio₃ Dielectrics With Bismuth-Zinc-Borate And Bismuth Borosilicate Glasses, David I. Shahin
Masters Theses
"Dielectrics in the Bi(Zn₀.₅Ti₀.₅O₃-BaTiO₃ system (specifically 20BZT-80BT, in mol%) are promising candidates for high energy density capacitor applications due to broad temperature-dependent dielectric constant maxima and a relatively field-independent permittivity. Bulk samples require sintering temperatures of greater than 1180ºC to reach useful densities. Due to incompatibility of Bi with low-pO₂ processing, BZT-BT-based multilayer capacitors must utilize noble metal electrodes that resist oxidation during sintering. Sintering temperatures must be reduced to allow use of less expensive electrode materials (Cu, etc.). This work studies the reduced temperature sintering behavior and dielectric properties of BZT-BT sintered with 30 Bi₂O₃-30ZnO-40B₂O₃ and 50Bi₂O₃-25B₂O₃-25SiO₂ (mol%) liquid …
Communication Protocols For Integrated Fiber Optic Sensor Interrogator, Tameem Ahmed Khan
Communication Protocols For Integrated Fiber Optic Sensor Interrogator, Tameem Ahmed Khan
Masters Theses
"Fiber optic sensors have gained rapid recognition in sensing environmental factors such as strain, stress, acoustics, pressure, temperature among emerging other sensing applications. Major advantages of fiber based systems are small size, light weight, multiplex-ability of sensors on a single fiber, and immunity to Radio Frequency (RF) interference. However, single most major disadvantage of such technology is that traditionally the interrogation systems are typically bulky and heavy lab only equipment. Embed-ability of sensors into different structures and environments requires that the whole systems (sensors + interrogator) be small, modular and portable. This thesis presents such a custom Fiber optic Sensor …

Production Of 1,3-Propanediol From Glycerol Under Haloalkaline Conditions By Halanaerobium Hydrogeniformans, Daniel William Roush
Masters Theses
"With increased demands around the world to make modern lifestyles more environmentally friendly, the chemical commodity market has rapidly shifted. Through new technologies in chemical production, certain high value products have oversaturated the market and have become high-volume, low value waste products. The expansion of biodiesel production offers a prime example; high volumes of glycerol byproduct from this process have shifted glycerol from a high priced commodity to a common waste product. A number of microorganisms are known to synthesize the polymeric precursor 1,3-propanediol from glycerol; however, crude glycerol from biodiesel production creates a harsh environment for most microbes, and …
Insufficient Ct Data Reconstruction Based On Directional Total Variation (Dtv) Regularized Maximum Likelihood Expectation Maximization (Mlem) Method, Fahima Fahmida Islam
Insufficient Ct Data Reconstruction Based On Directional Total Variation (Dtv) Regularized Maximum Likelihood Expectation Maximization (Mlem) Method, Fahima Fahmida Islam
Masters Theses
"Sparse tomography is an efficient technique which saves time as well as minimizes cost. However, due to few angular data it implies the image reconstruction problem as ill-posed. In the ill posed problem, even with exact data constraints, the inversion cannot be uniquely performed. Therefore, selection of suitable method to optimize the reconstruction problems plays an important role in sparse data CT. Use of regularization function is a well-known method to control the artifacts in limited angle data acquisition. In this work, we propose directional total variation regularized ordered subset (OS) type image reconstruction method for neutron limited data CT. …
Tensile Failure During Structural Development Of Single-Layer Buckle Folds, Xiaolong Liu
Tensile Failure During Structural Development Of Single-Layer Buckle Folds, Xiaolong Liu
Masters Theses
"Folds and fold trains of sedimentary strata are among the most common structural traps systems for hydrocarbon reservoirs. The existence of tensile fractures associated to buckle folding is associated to the distribution of extensional strain in the outer arc of the fold hinges. This study investigates the conditions under which tensile stresses develop due to buckling in a realistic in situ stress scenario. By applying a 2D finite element modeling approach, the influence of realistic mechanical stratigraphy (including strain rate, overburden depth, competence contrasts, viscosity, and permeability) on the development of single-layer buckle folds with Newtonian viscous rheology is studied. …
