Recent discoveries of highly dispersed millisecond radio bursts by Thornton et al. in a survey with the Parkes radio telescope at 1.4 GHz point towards an emerging population of sources at cosmological distances whose origin is currently unclear. Here we demonstrate that the scattering effects at lower radio frequencies are less than previously thought, and that the bursts could be detectable at redshifts out to about $z=0.5$ in surveys below 1 GHz. Using a source model in which the bursts are standard candles with bolometric luminosities $\sim 8 \times 10^{44}$ ergs/s uniformly distributed per unit comoving volume, we derive an …

Normal Cochlear Lateral Wall Permeability To Fluorescent Macromolecules, Veronica E. Henson Jan 2013

Normal Cochlear Lateral Wall Permeability To Fluorescent Macromolecules, Veronica E. Henson

Independent Studies and Capstones

Damage to the stria vascularis resulting in leakage of macromolecules from the capillaries has been indicated in research as undermining the endocochlear potential. Results indicate normal paracellular diffusion and caveolae-mediated transcytosis, suggesting normal permeability that does not necessitate pathology or undermine the endocochlear potential.

Tympanometry In Children With Down Syndrome, Caitlin M. Heeren Jan 2013

Tympanometry In Children With Down Syndrome, Caitlin M. Heeren

Independent Studies and Capstones

The primary aim was to determine whether or not the current standard tympanogram used in those older than 6 months, i.e. the 226 Hz probe tone, is an accurate measure of middle ear effusion in children with Down syndrome. This study also attempted to determine whether or not the 1000 Hz tympanometric probe tone may be a better measurement of middle ear status for this population.

Survival, Injury, And Antibiotic Resistance Patterns Of Cronobacter Sakazakii And Escherichia Coli Resulting From Exposure To Low-Temperature Ground Water, Alisha L. Dailey Jan 2013

Survival, Injury, And Antibiotic Resistance Patterns Of Cronobacter Sakazakii And Escherichia Coli Resulting From Exposure To Low-Temperature Ground Water, Alisha L. Dailey

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Bacteria are constantly being exposed to changing conditions in the environment. Exposure to adverse conditions such as pH, temperature, and desiccation may cause stress to the bacteria, potentially resulting in loss of viability and growth. Cronobacter sakazakii and Escherichia coli were exposed to cold temperature (4°C) and room temperature (24°C) nutrient-limiting groundwater. As a function of time (0 to 15 days), samples were removed from the stress and analyzed. Response of stressed cells was evaluated by three approaches: (i) traditional viable cell counts (nonselective and selective media), (ii) substrate utilization patterns (BIOLOG GN microplates), and (iii) antibiotic resistance patterns (modified …

Translating The Fashion Story: Analyzing Fashion Captions In Two Women's Magazines, Ehimwenma O. Vosper-Woghiren

LSU Master's Theses

Fashion magazines are the most accessible source for women to learn the latest about fashion and trends. Publishing company Condé Nast owns many consumer fashion magazines including the American editions of Lucky and Vogue. Even though both magazines are classified under the genre of fashion, these magazines are branded differently. Vogue features editorial styling, which is garments arranged lavishly and creatively for the glossy fashion spreads. However, Lucky magazine contains both editorial and lifestyle styling. To reinforce the styled image, fashion magazines place captions in these editorials. Captions transform these garments into written language. Since each magazine uses different types …
