Mapping Dissertation Genre Ecology, Kate Lisbeth Pantelides Jan 2013

Mapping Dissertation Genre Ecology, Kate Lisbeth Pantelides

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Though the pervasive rumor that the “traditional” dissertation persists because of the “I suffered, so they too should suffer” mentality — the professor revenge theory — students are often the ones eager to pin down writing genres so that they can master them. However, hopes to stabilize and thus capture the secret or equation of the dissertation genre are futile, since genres, like language, are alive: rhetorical, evolving, and flexible. Thus, to demonstrate the contemporary context of the dissertation genre, the conflicting perspectives of university stakeholders, the forces working on the genre to enact change, and the process by which …

Functional And Mutational Analysis Of Human Recq-Like Dna Helicases In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Hamed Mirzaei-Souderjani Jan 2013

Functional And Mutational Analysis Of Human Recq-Like Dna Helicases In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Hamed Mirzaei-Souderjani

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

RecQ-like proteins are a family of DNA helicases that are evolutionary conserved from prokaryotes to eukaryotes. A large amount of experimental evidence suggests these proteins have a major role in the maintenance of genome stability. In humans five RecQ like helicase have been identified (RecQL1, BLM, WRN, RecQL4, and RecQL5), three of which are associated with rare genetic disorders with sever chromosomal and developmental abnormalities, and an elevated predisposition to cancer. Among the disease associated RecQ-like helicases, BLM and WRN have been subject to extensive research, while our collective knowledge about the function of RecQL4 is still very limited. Similarly, …

Scfslimb Ubiquitin Ligase Suppresses Condensin Ii–Mediated Nuclear Reorganization By Degrading Cap-H2, Daniel W. Buster, Scott G. Daniel, Huy Q. Nguyen, Sarah L. Windler, Lara C. Skwarek, Maureen Peterson Jan 2013

Scfslimb Ubiquitin Ligase Suppresses Condensin Ii–Mediated Nuclear Reorganization By Degrading Cap-H2, Daniel W. Buster, Scott G. Daniel, Huy Q. Nguyen, Sarah L. Windler, Lara C. Skwarek, Maureen Peterson

Dartmouth Scholarship

Condensin complexes play vital roles in chromosome condensation during mitosis and meiosis. Condensin II uniquely localizes to chromatin throughout the cell cycle and, in addition to its mitotic duties, modulates chromosome organization and gene expression during interphase. Mitotic condensin activity is regulated by phosphorylation, but mechanisms that regulate condensin II during interphase are unclear. Here, we report that condensin II is inactivated when its subunit Cap-H2 is targeted for degradation by the SCF(Slimb) ubiquitin ligase complex and that disruption of this process dramatically changed interphase chromatin organization. Inhibition of SCF(Slimb) function reorganized interphase chromosomes into dense, compact domains and disrupted …

Are California's Homeless Children Being Left Behind - Analyzing The Implementation Of Mckinney-Vento Education Rights In California, Taylor Pospichel Jan 2013

Are California's Homeless Children Being Left Behind - Analyzing The Implementation Of Mckinney-Vento Education Rights In California, Taylor Pospichel

UC Law Journal of Race and Economic Justice

The term "homeless" evokes the image of an individual adult begging for change on a city sidewalk. The growing problem of homeless families, and of homeless children in particular, has not achieved the same level of social consciousness. Perhaps for that reason, the services in place for homeless individuals are not equipped to address the needs of displaced children. Title VII of the federal McKinney-Vento Act addresses the problems homeless children face in attending and succeeding in school. California has similar measures in place. However, the needs of California's homeless children are not adequately met at present.

This note exan-mines …

Crimes Without Punishment: An Update On Violence Against Women And Impunity In Guatemala, Karen Musalo, Blaine Bookey Jan 2013

Crimes Without Punishment: An Update On Violence Against Women And Impunity In Guatemala, Karen Musalo, Blaine Bookey

UC Law Journal of Race and Economic Justice

In response to rates of violence against women that rank among the highest in the world, Guatemala enacted the Law Against Femicide and Other Forms of Violence Against Women in 2008. Unfortunately, the law does not seem to be rectifying the deeply rooted problem of gender-based violence that plagues Guatemala. A 2010 report by the Center for Gender & Refugee Studies and later investigation in collaboration with the Refugee and Human Rights Clinic at UC Hastings revealed the degree to which Guatemala is failing to protect women from gender-motivated attack.

This article first surveys the scope of the problem of …

The Affordable Care Act And Beyond: Opportunities For Advancing Health Equity And Social Justice, Rene Bowser Jan 2013

The Affordable Care Act And Beyond: Opportunities For Advancing Health Equity And Social Justice, Rene Bowser

UC Law Journal of Race and Economic Justice

In 2010, the most monumental health care legislation in forty-five years was enacted. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act ("ACA") makes changes great and small in virtually every important component of the American health care system. The new law's implications will not be known fully for many years because state governments and federal agencies are in the process of interpreting key provisions, drafting rules and devising general implementation strategies. And, uncertainty exists about the scope of the ACA because of the recent Supreme Court ruling in National Federal of Independent Business v. Sebelius. The court upheld nearly all of …

Using Morningstar’S Analytical Measures To Evaluate Investment Recommendations Made By Consumer Reports, C. Edward Chang, Thomas M. Krueger

College of Business

Instead of its typical analysis of automobiles and household gadgets, Consumer Reports ventured into the murky world of predicting investments performance in 2005 and 2007. Enough time has passed since these recommendations to conduct a rigorous investigation of Consumer Reports’ success. This study analyzes recommendations through examination of return, risk, and risk-adjusted return using the popular Morningstar ratings. Consumer Reports’ choices will be judged in relationship to mutual funds in the same category and index funds. It appears as though Consumer Reports provided a valuable service to its investing readership both times.

The Sunland Training Centers: Florida’S Institutes For Children With Intellectual Disabilities, Kim Curry Jan 2013

The Sunland Training Centers: Florida’S Institutes For Children With Intellectual Disabilities, Kim Curry

Florida Public Health Review

Developmental disabilities affect about one out of every six children in the United States. These conditions create significant financial and social costs to families and society. Specifically, questions have long arisen as to how best to manage the needs of persons with intellectual disabilities. Historically, the nomenclature used to address intellectual disabilities has evolved as has the philosophy of venues to provide optimal care and the development of specific skills for conducting this care. Considerable dissension still exists about the type and nature of institutional care for even the most profoundly disabled individuals. This paper reviews relevant history, including laws, …

An Investigation Of Waste Glass-Based Geopolymers Supplemented With Alumina, Mary U. Christiansen Jan 2013

An Investigation Of Waste Glass-Based Geopolymers Supplemented With Alumina, Mary U. Christiansen

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

An increased consideration of sustainability throughout society has resulted in a surge of research investigating sustainable alternatives to existing construction materials. A new binder system, called a geopolymer, is being investigated to supplement ordinary portland cement (OPC) concrete, which has come under scrutiny because of the CO2 emissions inherent in its production.

Geopolymers are produced from the alkali activation of a powdered aluminosilicate source by an alkaline solution, which results in a dense three-dimensional matrix of tetrahedrally linked aluminosilicates. Geopolymers have shown great potential as a building construction material, offering similar mechanical and durability properties to OPC. Additionally, geopolymers have …

Assessment Of Aspen And Northern Hardwoods Extent In Thirty Three Counties Of Upper/Lower Michigan, Sara Alian Jan 2013

Assessment Of Aspen And Northern Hardwoods Extent In Thirty Three Counties Of Upper/Lower Michigan, Sara Alian

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

The importance of the United States' wood and wood byproducts as biomass feedstocks is increasing as the concern about security and sustainability of global energy production continues to rise. Thus, second generation woody feedstock sources in Michigan, e.g., hybrid poplar and hybrid willow (Populus spp.), are viewed as a potential source of biomass for the proposed biofuel ethanol production plant in Kinross, MI. It is important to gain an understanding of the spatial distribution of current feedstock sources, harvesting accessibility via the transportation infrastructure and land ownerships in order to ensure long-term feedstock extent. This research provides insights …

Dysprosium Transport In Nd-Fe-B Pellets, Parawee Pumwongpitak Jan 2013

Dysprosium Transport In Nd-Fe-B Pellets, Parawee Pumwongpitak

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

The addition of heavy rare earth (RE) elements to Nd2Fe14B based magnets to form (Nd,Dy)2Fe14B is known to increase the coercivity and high temperature performance required for hybrid vehicle electric motors and other extreme temperature applications. Attempts to conserve heavy rare earth elements for high temperature (RE)2Fe14B based magnets have led to the development of a grain boundary diffusion process for bulk magnets. This process relies on transport of a heavy rare earth, such as Dy, into a bulk Nd2Fe14B magnet along pores, a low volume fraction of …

The Celebrity Burden: Celebrity Campaigns In The Pursuit Of Humanitarianism, Regina Akosua Dede Baiden Jan 2013

The Celebrity Burden: Celebrity Campaigns In The Pursuit Of Humanitarianism, Regina Akosua Dede Baiden

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Celebrity participation in humanitarianism and politics has received a lot of attention in recent times. Though many researchers have sought to explain the reasons underlying this phenomenon, there appears to be little information as to the efficacy of these celebrity efforts. The present research thus undertakes an analysis of the celebrity's participation through a study on the effectiveness of the celebrity-led campaign. To achieve this, I conduct a discourse and visual analysis of media publications surrounding two celebrity-led campaigns. The research leans heavy on theories underlining the celebrity mechanism and Street et al's framework on celebrity participation in politics. The …

Living With Differences: From Everyday Fundamentalisms To Invitational Communication, Lisa M. Watrous Jan 2013

Living With Differences: From Everyday Fundamentalisms To Invitational Communication, Lisa M. Watrous

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

This project examines fundamentalism understood as an everyday way of living poorly with difference. It demonstrates that the fundamentalist is not reducible to stereotypes of the terrorist, extremist, irrational madman, or religious zealot. All of these characterizations--common in mainstream media--depict the fundamentalist as them, and rarely, if ever, as us. Rather, this project understands fundamentalism in terms of fundamental interpretive constructs that constrain our ways of being-with others, skew our interpretive and responsive possibilities, distort our perceptions of difference, and affirm our poor treatment of others. Following Martin Heidegger's conception of the hermeneutic structure of existence, this dissertation calls attention …

Keweenaw National Historical Park: Heritage Partnerships In An Industrial Landscape, Scott F. See Jan 2013

Keweenaw National Historical Park: Heritage Partnerships In An Industrial Landscape, Scott F. See

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

This dissertation examines the genesis and development of Keweenaw National Historical Park in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. After the decline of a once-thriving copper mining industry, local residents pursued the creation of a national park as a way to encourage economic development, revitalize their community, and preserve their historic resources. Although they were ultimately successful in creating a national park, the park that was established was not the park that they envisioned. Over the next twenty years, the National Park Service, the park's federal Advisory Commission, and the communities on the Keweenaw Peninsula struggled to align unrealistic expectations with the actual …

Optical Waveguides And Structures For Short Haul Optical Communication Channels Within Printed Circuit Boards, Nicholas J. Riegel

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Optical waveguides have shown promising results for use within printed circuit boards. These optical waveguides have higher bandwidth than traditional copper transmission systems and are immune to electromagnetic interference. Design parameters for these optical waveguides are needed to ensure an optimal link budget. Modeling and simulation methods are used to determine the optimal design parameters needed in designing the waveguides. As a result, optical structures necessary for incorporating optical waveguides into printed circuit boards are designed and optimized.

Embedded siloxane polymer waveguides are investigated for their use in optical printed circuit boards. This material was chosen because it has low …

Development And Characterization Of Fluorescent Ph Sensors Based On Porous Silica And Hydrogel Support Matrices, Qili Hu

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

The hydrogen ion activity (pH) is a very important parameter in environment monitoring, biomedical research and other applications. Optical pH sensors have several advantages over traditional potentiometric pH measurement, such as high sensitivity, no need of constant calibration, easy for miniaturization and possibility for remote sensing. Several pH indicators has been successfully immobilized in three different solid porous materials to use as pH sensing probes.

The fluorescent pH indicator fluorescein-5-isothiocyanate (FITC) was covalently bound onto the internal surface of porous silica (pore size ~10 nm) and retained its pH sensitivity. The excited state pK* a of FITC in porous silica …
