Alien grass invasions in arid and semi-arid ecosystems are resulting in grass–fire cycles and ecosystem-level transformations that severely diminish ecosystem services. Our capacity to address the rapid and complex changes occurring in these ecosystems can be enhanced by developing an understanding of the environmental factors and ecosystem attributes that determine resilience of native ecosystems to stress and disturbance, and resistance to invasion. Cold desert shrublands occur over strong environmental gradients and exhibit significant differences in resilience and resistance. They provide an excellent opportunity to increase our understanding of these concepts. Herein, we examine a series of linked questions about (a) …

Gwu Professors Gaskins & Moore Discuss 50th Anniversary Of Kennedy’S Assassination, Office Of University Communications
Gardner-Webb NewsCenter Archive
The life of President John F. Kennedy ended 50 years ago on Nov. 22, 1963 by an assassin’s bullet, slightly less than three years from the day he first took office as 35th president of the United States. As the country prepares to commemorate the 50th anniversary of his death, many historians and political science experts are reviewing elements of his legacy that might have been recorded in history’s annals very differently if he had not been killed. Gardner-Webb University professors Dr. Ben Gaskins (political science) and Dr. Joseph Moore (history) view JFK’s assassination as a turning point in the …

How Are The Educational Institutes Of Ireland Embracing The Paradigm Shift Towards Bim?, Michael Mcdonald, Stephen Donohoe
Conference papers
Abstract ̶ The main objective of this paper is to evaluate how Building Information Modelling (BIM) is being implemented and embraced within Higher Education. The authors intend to examine the current delivery and aspirations of the sector.
As the Irish economy faces several more years of austerity, every opportunity must be seized to make design more efficient in Architecture, Engineering and Construction. Higher Educational Institutes must respond to ensure that graduates have the skill set to support this. This paper will examine how these institutions need to migrate away from the traditional iterative design approach/process to a more collaborative holistic …

Developing An Architecture Framework For Cloud-Based, Multi-User, Finite Element Pre-Processing, Jared Calvin Briggs
Developing An Architecture Framework For Cloud-Based, Multi-User, Finite Element Pre-Processing, Jared Calvin Briggs
Theses and Dissertations
This research proposes an architecture for a cloud-based, multi-user FEA pre-processing system, where multiple engineers can access and operate on the same model in a parallel environment. A prototype is discussed and tested, the results of which show that a multi-user preprocessor, where all computing is done on a central server that is hosted on a high performance system, provides significant benefits to the analysis team. These benefits include a shortened preprocessing time, and potentially higher-quality models.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to determine effects of amlodipine, a dihydropyridine calcium channel blocker, on development of angiotensin II (AngII)-induced vascular pathologies.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Male LDL receptor -/- mice were infused with vehicle, amlodipine (5 mg/kg/d), AngII (1,000 ng/kg/min), or AngII + amlodipine for 4 weeks through osmotic pumps (n=10/group). Mice were fed a saturated fat-enriched diet for 1 week prior to pump implantation and during 4 weeks of infusion. Infusion of amlodipine resulted in plasma concentrations of 32 ± 2 ng/ml and 27 ± 2 ng/ml for mice in saline + amlodipine and AngII + …

Safeguarding Federalism By Saving Health Reform: Implications Of National Federation Of Independent Business V. Sebelius, Brietta Clark
Safeguarding Federalism By Saving Health Reform: Implications Of National Federation Of Independent Business V. Sebelius, Brietta Clark
Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review
On June 28, 2012, the Supreme Court issued one of its most anticipated decisions in National Federation of Independent Business v. Sebelius (“NFIB”)—the constitutional challenge to the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (“ACA”). The ACA is President Obama’s signature accomplishment and creates a number of reforms intended to reduce cost, improve the quality of healthcare and health outcomes, and expand access to care. The main pillars of the ACA are the expansions of public and private insurance coverage. These expansions were the targets of a number of legal challenges by states, private individuals, and various organizations, with two reaching …
