Innovations In Evaluating Health Campaigns In Developing Countries, W. Douglas Evans, Marc Boulay, Rebecca Firestone, Rajiv N. Rimal
GW Health Communication and Marketing Symposium Series
When conducting research in resource-poor settings, what research-method textbooks prescribe often varies substantially from what actually gets implemented on the ground. Randomization often breaks down, extraneous noise often pollutes the purity of experimental designs, and other challenges emerge in the field. The panel will highlight some of those challenges and engage the audience in discussions about possible solutions. Dr. Boulay will illustrate an analytic approach that combines propensity score matching and mediation analysis to provide a more comprehensive evaluation of SBCC activities. Dr. Firestone will discuss PSI's experience using coarsened exact matching to strengthen evaluation of its behavior change communications …

Scholars’ Supreme Court Amicus Brief In Support Of Neither Party: Petrella V. Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Douglas Laycock, Mark P. Gergen, Doug Rendleman
Scholarly Articles
The appeal to the Supreme Court in Petrella v. Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer deals with the equitable defense of plaintiff’s laches before suing for copyright infringement. Laches is unreasonable and prejudicial delay. MGM allegedly violated plaintiff’s copyright repeatedly over a period of many years; the statute of limitations has not run on the most recent violations. Plaintiff argues that laches should never apply to a cause of action with a statute of limitations. Defendant argues that laches should bar all relief if defendant relied on plaintiff’s failure to sue earlier, without having to match defendant’s reliance to the remedies plaintiff seeks.

Gardner-Webb University Announces Pending Sale Of Radio Frequency 88.3 Fm, Office Of University Communications
Gardner-Webb NewsCenter Archive
Officials with Gardner-Webb University are announcing the pending sale of their long-standing FM radio frequency 88.3 upon approval from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). New Life 91.9 WRCM, part of Columbia International University (Columbia, S.C.), has agreed to purchase the frequency and expects the transition to be complete in the first quarter of 2014. “While the purchase of the frequency has been in negotiation for several months, all of the paperwork has now been filed with the FCC,” said WGWG General Manager Noel Manning.

Comparative Genome Analysis Of Ciprofloxacin-Resistant Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Reveals Genes Within Newly Identified High Variability Regions Associated With Drug Resistance Development, Hsun-Cheng Su, Jainab Khatun, Dona M. Kanavy, Morgan C. Giddings
Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations
The alarming rise of ciprofloxacin-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa has been reported in several clinical studies. Though the mutation of resistance genes and their role in drug resistance has been researched, the process by which the bacterium acquires high-level resistance is still not well understood. How does the genomic evolution of P. aeruginosa affect resistance development? Could the exposure of antibiotics to the bacteria enrich genomic variants that lead to the development of resistance, and if so, how are these variants distributed through the genome? To answer these questions, we performed 454 pyrosequencing and a whole genome analysis both before and after …

The Pseudo-Rigid-Body Model For Fast, Accurate, Non-Linear Elasticity, Anthony R. Hall
Theses and Dissertations
We introduce to computer graphics the Pseudo-Rigid-Body Mechanism (PRBM) and the chain algorithm from mechanical engineering, with a unified tutorial from disparate source materials. The PRBM has been used successfully to simplify the simulation of non-linearly elastic beams, using deflections of an analogous spring and rigid-body linkage. It offers computational efficiency as well as an automatic parameterization in terms of physically measurable, intuitive inputs which fit naturally into existing animation work flows for character articulation. The chain algorithm is a technique for simulating the deflection of complicated elastic bodies in terms of straight elastic elements, which has recently been extended …

As the nation remembers the assassination of President John F. Kennedy 50 years ago, individuals are reflecting on elements of his legacy that are sometimes overshadowed by his premature death. For instance, JFK utilized media, particularly photography and television, to effectively connect with his audience and to advance his political agenda. WGWG’s Jeff Powell talks with Dr. Lisa C. Luedeman of Gardner-Webb University’s Communication Studies department.

Student Performance In A Principle Of Microeconomics Course Under Hybrid And Face-To-Face Delivery, P. Verhoeven, T. Rudchenko
Faculty Articles
Designing a hybrid course entails the challenge of choosing learning activities for each of the face-to-face and online environments--and sequencing and coordinating the activities across the two environments--to promote student attainment of the course’s learning objectives. This paper presents a study comparing student performance in an undergraduate Principles of Microeconomics course taught by the same instructor under hybrid (n = 51) and face-to-face (n = 24) delivery. The percentage of hybrid students completing the course (71%) was not significantly different (chi-square = .61, p = .433) than that (79%) of the face-to-face students. A regression analysis controlling for student GPA …
