Diagnosed But Not Defeated: The Experiences Of African-American Males With Past Histories Of Enrollment In Special Education Who Successfully Attend Community College, Kennedi Strickland-Dixon Nov 2013

Diagnosed But Not Defeated: The Experiences Of African-American Males With Past Histories Of Enrollment In Special Education Who Successfully Attend Community College, Kennedi Strickland-Dixon

College of Education Theses and Dissertations

African-American males are disappearing at alarming rates before our eyes through racially driven practices that secure their position in the penal system and special education. Though many scholars in the field of education have highlighted alarming rates of incarceration and overrepresentation in special education for African-American males, society has accepted these practices as a normal standard ofliving for Black males in this country.

African-American males who have not become part of the penal system and have successfully matriculated into college are considered to be an exception to the rule rather than a standard to live up to. Though a plethora …

Outside The Realm: The Counter-Narratives Of African American Parent Involvement, Deborah Watson-Hill

College of Education Theses and Dissertations

The present study explores the experiences of African American parents and how they support their children’s education inside and outside the school realm. More specifically, the study examines African American parents’ level of involvement or engagement in their children’s education and the impact this has upon their children. In this study, parent involvement refers to school-sanctioned, school-authored activities in which parents participate. Parent engagement refers to those activities that parents arrange for themselves and their self-directed, relational interactions with school personnel. Moreover, parent involvement and parent engagement are not used interchangeably but as distinct terms. The participants in this study …

Brain Mapping Of The Mismatch Negativity Response To Vowel Variances Of Natural And Synthetic Phonemes, Lyndsy Marie Smith Nov 2013

Brain Mapping Of The Mismatch Negativity Response To Vowel Variances Of Natural And Synthetic Phonemes, Lyndsy Marie Smith

Theses and Dissertations

The mismatch negativity (MMN) is a specific event-related potential (ERP) component used frequently in the observation of auditory processing. The MMN is elicited by a deviant stimulus randomly presented in the presence of repeating stimuli. The current study utilized the MMN response in order to determine the temporal (timing) and linguistic processing of natural and synthetic vowel stimuli. It was hypothesized that a significant MMN response would be elicited by natural and synthetic vowel stimuli. Brain mapping of the MMN response was hypothesized to yield temporal resolution information, which would provide detail regarding the sequential processing differences between natural and …

Longitudinal Relations Between Dating Violence Victimization And Perpetration And Substance Use: The Moderating Role Of Gender And School Norms For Dating Violence, Katherine Taylor Nov 2013

Longitudinal Relations Between Dating Violence Victimization And Perpetration And Substance Use: The Moderating Role Of Gender And School Norms For Dating Violence, Katherine Taylor

Theses and Dissertations

Adolescent dating violence is commonly experienced by adolescents and is associated with a variety of negative outcomes. Stress and coping and social learning theories suggest that dating violence victimization may predict increased substance use and dating violence perpetration. However, few studies have assessed these relations over time, and existing studies have not assessed physical and psychological dating violence victimization separately nor focused on early adolescent populations. The current study addressed these gaps by examining longitudinal relations between physical and psychological dating violence victimization and substance use and physical and psychological dating violence perpetration among early adolescents. The extent to which …

Enigmatic Allegory, Sara Virginia Kinsey Nov 2013

Enigmatic Allegory, Sara Virginia Kinsey

Theses and Dissertations

My artwork is autobiographical and shaped by my experiences. Collectively, it serves as a visual journal expressing a range of emotions honoring meaningful people, portraying important places, and commemorating significant events in my life. My art documents the progression from turmoil, despair, and isolation to growth, recovery, and gratitude. I utilize a recurring set of subjective symbols which hold personal significance. These symbols, which include robots, eggs, chairs, shoes, and trash cans, help me create narratives and visual continuity across my body of work. I purposefully omit some information to mask the entirety of the story being told. Typically, these …

Ideal Dating And Sexual Partners For Low-Income Heterosexual African American Adolescents, Darnell Nathaniel Motley Nov 2013

Ideal Dating And Sexual Partners For Low-Income Heterosexual African American Adolescents, Darnell Nathaniel Motley

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

Dating and sexual relationships among adolescents have been identified as both normative and beneficial. However, the research examining the dating and sexual relationships of African American adolescents has been narrow in scope, focusing primarily on risks of intimate partner violence, pregnancy, and STI/HIV transmission. This myopic focus has left a gap in the literature as it relates to the normative aspects of dating and sexual relationships for these youth.

The present study sought to better understand the dating and sexual partner preferences of 51 African American adolescents (male = 32, female = 19) recruited from Chicago and San Francisco. The …

Fair Value Measurements Disclosure: Mandatory Adoption, Valuation And Disclosure Effects, Joseph Denard Reid Nov 2013

Fair Value Measurements Disclosure: Mandatory Adoption, Valuation And Disclosure Effects, Joseph Denard Reid

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The recent financial crisis caused fair value relevancy and appropriateness to be called to the forefront of academic research as the subject dominated the media headlines. To date, there is limited research available to adequately understand, interpret and evaluate the benefits and consequences of fair value valuation and related disclosures within a liquid market context. This three paper dissertation contributes to academic literature by providing some evidence of the effects of mandatory disclosure surrounding fair value in an illiquid or highly volatile market. The first paper examines the relationship between mandatory disclosure, implied cost of capital and financial reporting quality. …

Terror As A Social Movement Tactic: Applying The Multi-Institutional Politics Approach To The Case Of The Abu Sayyaf Group, Erika Mae Lorenzana Del Villar Nov 2013

Terror As A Social Movement Tactic: Applying The Multi-Institutional Politics Approach To The Case Of The Abu Sayyaf Group, Erika Mae Lorenzana Del Villar

Master's Theses

Solely equating terrorism with criminality discounts the social, political, cultural, and historical motivations that drive people to employ violence as a strategy for collective action. Using the multi-institutional politics approach to social movements (Armstrong and Bernstein 2008), this study explores the choice of the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) in the Philippines to employ terror and violence as the primary social movement tactic to pursue their Islamic separatist cause. Analysis of archival and open-source data, together with original interviews, reveal that the problem is multi-institutional – developmental, cultural, historical, social and political all at the same time. The choice of violence …

Diffusion Of Energy Efficient Technology In Commercial Buildings: An Analysis Of The Commercial Building Partnerships Program, Chrissi Argyro Antonopoulos Nov 2013

Diffusion Of Energy Efficient Technology In Commercial Buildings: An Analysis Of The Commercial Building Partnerships Program, Chrissi Argyro Antonopoulos

Dissertations and Theses

This study presents findings from survey and interview data investigating replication of green building measures by Commercial Building Partnership (CBP) partners that worked directly with the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL). PNNL partnered directly with 12 organizations on new and retrofit construction projects, which represented approximately 28 percent of the entire U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) CBP program. Through a feedback survey mechanism, along with personal interviews, quantitative and qualitative data were gathered relating to replication efforts by each organization. These data were analyzed to provide insight into two primary research areas: 1) CBP partners' replication efforts of green building …

Getting To Excellence: What Every Educator Should Know About Consequences Of Beliefs, Attitudes, And Paradigms For The Reconstruction Of An Academically Unacceptable Middle School, James A. Johnson, Jay Cummings, Margaret Stroud, Gatsy Moye' -Lavergne, Wilbert J. Andrews Jr.

The Bridge: Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Legal & Social Policy

In this chapter a discussion of a salient dimension of the external environment in which today’s educators find themselves practicing – the policy context - is presented. Critical elements of this discussion include a truncated history of the encroachment on local control of the schools and the ensuing standardized-tests-based accountability and standardized testing movement. We also pay some attention to growing efforts to push back against these movements. We conclude this chapter with perspectives of a set of scholarly informants on quality, equity, and adequacy. Our effort in this chapter is to trace the political distance traveled from education defined …

Urban Education Reform- Case Study: North Forest Independent School District, Jay K. Aiyer, Michael O. Adams, Subria Lapps Nov 2013

Urban Education Reform- Case Study: North Forest Independent School District, Jay K. Aiyer, Michael O. Adams, Subria Lapps

The Bridge: Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Legal & Social Policy

Education reformers and advocates have conducted extensive studies and produced significant research around various models of school turnaround and reform. As a case study for policy in relation to models for school district turnaround, we will explore Houston’s North Forest Independent School District (NFISD). The purpose of this paper is threefold. First, as a study of policy we will retroactively explore the key factors that led to the proposed closure of NFISD. Second, using existing strategies of school turnaround, we will explore potential models of reform that may be applied to NFISD. Third, we will discuss biases and recommendations concerning …

From Colonization To R.E.S.P.E.C.T.: How Federal Education Policy Fails Children And Educators Of Color, Rachelle Lanette Ard, Christopher B. Knaus Nov 2013

From Colonization To R.E.S.P.E.C.T.: How Federal Education Policy Fails Children And Educators Of Color, Rachelle Lanette Ard, Christopher B. Knaus

The Bridge: Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Legal & Social Policy

In this paper, we argue that national education policy has maintained educational inequality through continually avoiding the very causes of inequality. While a steady stream of re-formulated educational policy mantras lead educators to continually shift curriculum and assessment tools, these efforts ignore the unexamined racism that shapes schooling in the U.S. This paper frames federal policy efforts as designed to continue to benefit White educators (and educators of color aligned to White interests), while justifying educational inequality, measured loosely by false notions of academic achievement. These policy efforts promote economic inequality, promote racialized ideals of what an educator and educational …

The Falsity Of Life And The Truth Of Existence: A Thematic Exploration Into Ingmar Bergman's Works, Ru Pan Nov 2013

The Falsity Of Life And The Truth Of Existence: A Thematic Exploration Into Ingmar Bergman's Works, Ru Pan

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Human existence is one essential theme in the modern art. As a representative of the modern film art, Swedish film director Ingmar Bergman probed into the depth of despair and danger, exposing, through cinematic means, all the disguises of language, revealing the true circumstances of human existence. Bergman's representative works of different periods such as Persona, Autumn Sonata and The Life of Puppets reflected his artistic aspiration, which may be summarized as to unravel the pompous disguise of language, pierce through the frantic illusions of sexuality under the duress of power, and reveal the raging violence underlying close human ties.

Environmental Civility: Culture, Education, Enlightenment, And Wisdom, Sepänmaa Yrjö Nov 2013

Environmental Civility: Culture, Education, Enlightenment, And Wisdom, Sepänmaa Yrjö

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Culture and civility, enlightenment and wisdom all relate to the environment, and the environment relates to them. Environmental civility is a conscious and emotional skill or readiness, which permits a basically positive attitude and way of acting. Civility and wisdom are close to each other and nearly synonyms. Knowledge is the foundation, but it needs the partnership of an attitude that maintains and refines life. Civility is value-positive, but as such also critical. It means proper respect and appreciation of well-done work, and always seeking something better. Eco-humanism emphasizes the positive value of humankind and human work, positive footprints: we …

Our Gendered Food Chain, Jasmine T. Colahan Nov 2013

Our Gendered Food Chain, Jasmine T. Colahan

SURGE

Over the past four decades, the number of women-operated farms has nearly doubled. Including both primary and secondary operators, one million women make up thirty percent of all U.S. farmers.

Headlines such as “Females Take the Reins,” “Meet the New face of Agriculture,” “Old McDonald Might Be a Lady” demonstrate this gender shift. And, it is true in my life too. As I worked on the Painted Turtle Farm this summer, the majority of my role models, co-workers, and mentors working in agriculture, whether rural or urban, were primarily women. [excerpt]

I'M Not Gonna Be Like That Guy: Exploring The Montana Meth Project Through The Eyes Of That Guy, Jaysen Nicole Ferestad Nov 2013

I'M Not Gonna Be Like That Guy: Exploring The Montana Meth Project Through The Eyes Of That Guy, Jaysen Nicole Ferestad

Dissertations and Theses

Graphic images of meth addicts have swept across Montana in television, radio and print ads as part of the state's latest anti-drug campaign, the Montana Meth Project. From a labeling perspective, the negative portrayal of meth addicts in these ads has significant implications for meth addicts in terms of their reintegration. The unintended population of drug addicts potentially affected by public service campaigns has failed to gain attention in the literature despite the implications suggested by labeling theory. This poses a significant gap in our knowledge and understanding, which this study addresses through the voice of recovering meth addicts. This …

Project 10:13, Julianna Farias Nov 2013

Project 10:13, Julianna Farias

Honors Program Theses and Research Projects

Project 10:13 ultimately aims to fix the nation's drug problem and eventually change the country's legal structure regarding drug crimes. At this rate this trend is increasing, something must be done to slow down the acceleration of the problem. To do so, Project 10:13 will start with San Antonio, TX. One of the reasons for starting project 10:13 is my first-hand experience with the damage caused by drug abuse. My older sister, now 28, suffered from an addiction to drugs from the age of 16 to the age of 24. For my family and I, those eight years are indescribable. …

Revisioning A Japanese Spiritual Recovery Through Manga: Kobayashi Yoshinori’S ‘Gōmanism’ As Aesthetics And Ideology, James Mark Shields

Faculty Journal Articles

This essay provides a critical analysis of the aesthetic ideology of “Gomanism” in the manga of Kobayashi Yoshinori (b. 1953), particularly Yasukuniron (On Yasukuni, 2005) and Tennōron (On the Emperor, 2009), in order to flesh out the implications of the author’s “revisionist” approach to Japanese religion, politics and history.
