The Osh Family Of Proteins And Their Role In Caloric Restriction-Mediated Lifespan Extension In The Budding Yeast Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, William Douglas Craft
The Osh Family Of Proteins And Their Role In Caloric Restriction-Mediated Lifespan Extension In The Budding Yeast Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, William Douglas Craft
Theses and Dissertations
Oxysterol-binding protein homolouges (OSH) have been implicated in mediating non-vesicular sterol transport. Caloric restriction (CR) down-regulates sterol synthesis in a variety of organisms, including the budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. OSH6, when up-regulated, extends replicative lifespan. In contrast, OSH5 up-regulation shortens replicative lifespan. In this thesis I obtained evidence to show that the deletion of OSH5 extends replicative lifespan in normal media. Deletion of OSH5 in the presence of caloric restriction blocks the lifespan-extending properties of the CR media. My data demonstrate that the total cellular sterol levels of the longevity mutants are indistinguishable from that of wild type. This suggests …
Coalescence In Confinement: Cultural Synthesis And Identity In Michi Tanaka's Community Life, Kimberly L. Sanders
Coalescence In Confinement: Cultural Synthesis And Identity In Michi Tanaka's Community Life, Kimberly L. Sanders
Theses and Dissertations
Community Life by Michi Tanaka was one of eight government commissioned murals created by students at Rohwer Relocation Center in 1944 illustrating the Japanese American evacuation and relocation. The final versions of these works no longer exist. The preparatory drafts, however, remain intact and provide valuable information regarding the artists' experiences at Rohwer. Through an iconographic analysis of Tanaka's mural draft and an exploration of themes and principal elements in her life at camp such as religion, fashion and socialization, this thesis suggests that Community Life illustrates a cultural synthesis between two disparate cultures. This synthesis influenced the development of …

In Ambiguous Battle: The Promise (And Pathos) Of Public Domain Day, 2014, Jennifer Jenkins
Duke Law & Technology Review
On the first day of each year, Public Domain Day celebrates the moment when copyrights expire, and books, films, songs, and other creative works enter the public domain, where they become, in Justice Brandeis’s words, “free as the air to common use.” Educators, students, artists, and fans can use them with neither permission nor payment. Online archives can digitize and make them fully available without the threat of lawsuits or licensing demands. Sadly, in the United States, as a result of copyright term extensions, not a single published work will enter the public domain in 2014. In fact, almost no …

Convective Heat Transfer In Square And Cylindrical Porous Annulus / Salman Ahamed Khan Jagirdar, Jagirdar Salman Ahamed Khan
Student Works (2010-2019)
The convective heat transfer in porous media has attracted the considerable attention in the past few decades due to its wide applicability in various fields. The present work focuses on investigating the various aspects of convection such as conjugate heat transfer, conjugate double diffusion and mixed convection analysis with thermal equilibrium and thermal non-equilibrium modeling. The finite element method is used to discretize the governing non-linear partial differential equations. Galerkins method has been employed to accomplish the element stiffness matrix. An in-house computer code was developed to solve the resulting equations that describe the behavior of heat transfer in porous …

Chronic exposure to nicotine up-regulates high sensitivity nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) in the brain. This up-regulation partially underlies addiction and may also contribute to protection against Parkinson's disease. nAChRs containing the α6 subunit (α6* nAChRs) are expressed in neurons in several brain regions, but comparatively little is known about the effect of chronic nicotine on these nAChRs. We report here that nicotine up-regulates α6* nAChRs in several mouse brain regions (substantia nigra pars compacta, ventral tegmental area, medial habenula, and superior colliculus) and in neuroblastoma 2a cells. We present evidence that a coat protein complex I (COPI)-mediated process mediates this …

Arkansas's Early Home Demonstration Club Members: Making The Work Their Own, Elizabeth A. Hill
Theses and Dissertations
In its attempt to retain the nation's farmers and farm families on the land during the early twentieth century, the U. S. Department of Agriculture found that the situation in the South was particularly problematic as it included dilapidated farm homes, malnutrition, and "poverty of spirit." In order to combat these deficiencies, the home demonstration program taught farm women improved methods for accomplishing their household responsibilities. It also encouraged the women to better their families' living conditions through home improvements and labor-saving devices. This study explores how Arkansas's early home demonstration club members accepted, within their own limitations and spheres …

President Xi Jinping's call for a "new type of great-power relationship" in meetings in 2013 with President Obama raises important questions about the future of US-China relations. On the surface, it appeared that the two leaders were on the same page. At the June summit, Obama agreed with Xi that "working together cooperatively" and bringing US-China relations "to a new level" were sound ideas. When the G-20 countries convened at St. Petersburg in September, Obama said of Xi’s proposed new model: "we agreed to continue to build a new model of great power relations based on practical cooperation and constructively …

Sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P) is a crucial chemotactic factor in peripheral blood (PB) involved in the mobilization process and egress of hematopoietic stem/progenitor cells (HSPCs) from bone marrow (BM). Since S1P is present at high levels in erythrocytes, one might assume that, by increasing the plasma S1P level, the hemolysis of red blood cells would induce mobilization of HSPCs. To test this assumption, we induced hemolysis in mice by employing phenylhydrazine (PHZ). We observed that doubling the S1P level in PB from damaged erythrocytes induced only a marginally increased level of mobilization. However, if mice were exposed to PHZ together with the …

Localized Corrosion Behavior Of Sensitized 304 Stainless Steel By Scanning Reference Electrode Technique, Chen-Qing Ye, Rong-Gang Hu, Rui-Qing Hou, Xiao-Ping Wang, Rong-Gui Du, Chang-Jian Lin
Journal of Electrochemistry
Based on a home-built setup of scanning reference electrode technique, and combined with conventional electrochemical measurements, the localized corrosion behavior of sensitized 304 stainless steel (304ss) had been investigated in this work. The results showed that, the non-sensitized 304ss or 304ss sensitized at 550 oC was susceptible to pitting; while 304ss sensitized at 650 oC or 750 oC suffered severe intergranular corrosion in 10% FeCl3 solution.

Prevalence Of Drug Resistance Among New Cases Of Pulmonary Tuberculosis, Zaid Mohammed Ali Hamandi, Adnan M.Aljubouri
Iraqi Postgraduate Medical Journal
ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) is a disease that has affected humankind throughout recorded history and before.Presently, the number of deaths caused by TB worldwide exceeds that caused by any other organism. Drug-resistant tuberculosis is a man-made problem. Poor management can lead to the selection of M. tuberculosis with mutations conferring resistance to antituberculous drugs. Drug resistance is divided into two types: primary (resistance in persons who have never received anti-tuberculosis drugs for more than 1 month. These patients are initially infected with drug-resistant strains) and secondary, acquired, (resistance to anti-tuberculosis drugs, which arises during treatment due to poor compliance or …

The Role Of Astrocyte And Purinergic Signaling In Rtn Chemoreception, Ian C. Wenker
The Role Of Astrocyte And Purinergic Signaling In Rtn Chemoreception, Ian C. Wenker
Doctoral Dissertations
Central chemoreception is the mechanism by which the brain regulates breathing in response to changes in tissue pH/CO2. It is particularly important during sleep and its disruption has been associated with certain pathologies, including central sleep apnea and central congenital hypoventilation syndrome. A region of the brainstem called the retrotrapezoid nucleus (RTN) is thought to be an important site of central chemoreception. Recent evidence suggests that RTN chemoreception involves two mechanisms. The first appears to be H+-mediated activation of neurons via inhibition of pH-sensitive potassium channels. More recently, a second sensing mechanism has been identified; paracrine release of ATP in …

Master's Theses
This study explores the ways in which the Hip-hop movement is producing social change in Medellín, Colombia. Looking specifically at a Hip-hop school called Cuatro Elementos Skuela, which exists autonomously and with very little state support in the Medellín neighborhood of Aranjuez, I argue that young people are contributing to the reconstruction of the city’s social, cultural and economic fabric. I start by explaining the historical context of Medellín, describing the different sets of conflicts that unleashed high levels of violence and caused the fragmentation of the social, cultural and economic fabric. Moreover, I review the role of the …

Timing And Spectroscopy Requirements For A Plastic Scintillating Fiber Bundle Time-Of-Flight Neutron Spectrometer, Paul A. Clement
Theses and Dissertations
The design parameters of a Time-of-Flight (TOF) neutron spectrometer composed of BCF-12 plastic scintillating fibers were investigated. A GEANT4 transport model was developed for analyzing the interaction of 2.5 MeV neutrons with a 14 x 14 BCF-12 fiber bundle. The bundle simulation demonstrated that 0.359% of all neutrons incident on the bundle will double scatter. The timing and data collection e efficiencies of a Tektronix DPO7104 series digital oscilloscope were examined to determine the signal processing requirements for future fiber bundle measurements. The minimum detectable neutron energy was computed by taking into account the bundle scintillation e efficiency, light collection …
