Vlerësimi I Performancës Dhe Metodat Më Të Përdorura, Shpresa Gashi

Theses and Dissertations

Planning For Student Veteran And Military Member Support Programs At The University Of Nebraska-Lincoln, Daniel D. Moseman

Community and Regional Planning Program: Professional Projects

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) has recognized the importance of its student veteran and military member population and is undertaking a planning process to develop or improve its student veteran programs. The goal of this professional project is to present UNL with options and alternatives that could be used to develop these student veteran programs. The research associated with this project is timely and prudent, given the current reduction in military force size and the anticipated return of many thousand service members into post-secondary education.

This professional project provides information on three topics. First, research from credible sources determines the …

Libguides, Videos, And Screencasting: Technologies To Enhance And Promote Digital Wisdom In Information Literacy Instruction, Rafia Mirza, Jody Bailey

LOEX Conference Proceedings 2011

n this workshop, we will discuss how the information revolution affects teaching information literacy -- specifically, students' need for digital wisdom. Today, students are usually aware of what technology can do for them socially but do not know how to produce and critically assess digital knowledge in their scholarship. Demonstrating the production of digital objects will help promote digital wisdom in the classroom by making the process transparent. To this end, we will demonstrate the following:

- A LibGuide that is interactive, welcoming, personal, and helpful and that will focus on how to teach students or faculty about video editing. …

"Gun Control" Is Not A Research Question! Partnering With Teaching Faculty To Solve Problems And Refresh Library Instruction, Beverly Kutz

LOEX Conference Proceedings 2011

It's a classic problem: students in library instruction trying to research a topic without adequate preparation, or worse, having no topic at all. This was the number one problem identified when University of Tennessee Chattanooga library instructors and English Composition teaching faculty met in focus groups last summer. Learn how the UTC library used focus groups to partner with Freshman Composition teaching faculty to identify major problems, create innovative solutions, and collaborate to implement a completely refreshed 1st year library instruction program.

The results so far have been extremely satisfactory. Our partnership with Freshman English Composition faculty has resulted in …

Bridging The Gaps: Transliteracy As Effective Pedagogy, Lane Wilkinson Dec 2013

Bridging The Gaps: Transliteracy As Effective Pedagogy, Lane Wilkinson

LOEX Conference Proceedings 2011

'Transliteracy' is a topic that is quickly spreading around the library world. However, there is little agreement about what, exactly, transliteracy is. This presentation will situate transliteracy within the context of library instruction as an enhanced approach to information literacy. Students are surprisingly information literate as they make effortless cognitive shifts between Facebook and e-mail, smart-phones and desktops, or text-messaging and speaking. Yet, they often hit a wall with library databases, indexes, or other research tools. Transliteracy addresses this issue pedagogically by emphasizing and harnessing the cognitive processes underlying preexisting media and information use. The presentation will begin with an …

Information Visualization And Keyword Searching, Matt Conner, Melissa Browne

LOEX Conference Proceedings 2011

The session will provide an overview of advances in visual literacy and their relevance to library instruction and focus on the sub-field of information visualization as an emerging area that synthesizes trends in computer science, education, and psychology. Information visualization will then be related to the search behaviors of users which appear to be deteriorating under the influence of the internet. Three graphical pedagogies (based on information visualization) for teaching the generation of keywords will be discussed. The session will end with an update on research underway to test the effectiveness of the three pedagogies.

Muchos Mentores En Iowa: The Pedagogy Of Student To Student Mentoring In Information Literacy, Julia Bauder, Beth Bohstedt, Phillip Jones

LOEX Conference Proceedings 2011

At Grinnell College we believe that students can be the best teachers and that lasting learning also happens outside of the classroom. The Grinnell College Libraries' peer mentoring program is rooted in these beliefs. Our program has two components: advanced research help provided by reference assistants (RAs) at the reference desk; and basic information service provided by all students working at our public service desks. Throughout this presentation, attendees will be challenged to consider if peer information service is appropriate for their libraries and to articulate initial steps to explore and implement such a service.

Library Instruction Credibility: How Do We Establish It? How Do We Publicize It?, Frances A. May, Yunfei Du Dec 2013

Library Instruction Credibility: How Do We Establish It? How Do We Publicize It?, Frances A. May, Yunfei Du

LOEX Conference Proceedings 2011

What I would like to propose is not a presentation but a strategy session. Over the ten years I have spent as an instruction librarian, I have come to realize that what we need is quantitative data showing the benefits that students derive from library instruction. It needs to be gathered and published in non-library forums, such as educational or subject specific journals. Once the benefits are publicized and understood by educators and faculty, we may be able to move beyond the fifty minute, one shot instruction session, and make an information literate society a reality.

To do this, we …

Participants will have the opportunity to create a lesson plan for a PBL session while working in a PBL environment. The workshop will focus on creating learning objectives, creating PBL prompts, facilitating discussion, and leading a de-briefing session. PBL activities complement information literacy sessions because they ask the student to actively demonstrate competencies, and allow the instructor to act as a "guide on the side."

Behaviorism's Impact On Advertising: Then And Now, Abigail Bartholomew Dec 2013

Behaviorism's Impact On Advertising: Then And Now, Abigail Bartholomew

College of Journalism and Mass Communications: Theses

Behaviorism as defined in 1913 by John B. Watson was a science that used repeated, observable human activity to develop hypotheses that would eventually predict and control responses. Through repeated experiments, Watson developed a thorough knowledge of what he defined as base human reactions. Stanley Resor, then president of J. Walter Thompson Agency, hired Watson to promote a partnership between advertising and science, and the subsequent 15 years of Watson’s career included some notable scientific contributions. This study shows that though these outcomes may not have provided many measurable positive results, they set into motion industry-wide change that continued to …

Brave New World Reloaded: Advocating For Basic Constitutional Search Protections To Apply To Cell Phones From Eavesdropping And Tracking By Government And Corporate Entities, Mark Berrios-Ayala

HIM 1990-2015

Imagine a world where someone’s personal information is constantly compromised, where federal government entities AKA Big Brother always knows what anyone is Googling, who an individual is texting, and their emoticons on Twitter. Government entities have been doing this for years; they never cared if they were breaking the law or their moral compass of human dignity. Every day the Federal government blatantly siphons data with programs from the original ECHELON to the new series like PRISM and Xkeyscore so they can keep their tabs on issues that are none of their business; namely, the personal lives of millions. Minimal Medium For Optimal Growth And Lipid Production Of The Microalgae Scenedesmus Dimorphus, Colin Welter, Jacob Schwenk, Bahar Kanani, John Van Blargan, Joanne M. Belovich

Chemical & Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

The culture of Scenedesmus dimorphus at the laboratory scale has often been in standard microalgae media, such as 3N-Basal Bold medium (3N-BB), which contains 15 different chemicals. Given the extremely tight profit margins of large-scale production of biofuel from microalgae, it is important to identify the minimally sufficient quantities of nutrients necessary to maximize lipid productivity. The individual and interactive effects of six groupings of the components of 3N-BB medium on growth rate, lipid content, and total biomass yield of S. dimorphus were determined. Trace metal and vitamin concentrations were reduced to 1/6 the level of 3N-BB medium without adversely …

Anthropology ETDs

This dissertation investigates the long-term impacts of tribal economic development programs on the cultural preservation efforts of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians (MBCI). Since the 1970s the Mississippi Choctaw have initiated many different economic enterprises ranging from manufacturing plants to resort development, owning and operating a diversified portfolio of manufacturing, service, retail, and tourism enterprises. This history of engaging with western business models offers a unique perspective for analyzing the long-term effects of these practices on a tribal community. My work with the MBCI engages a long debate over the use of capitalist business models in tribal economic development …

There has been limited research examining the pedagogical benefits of peer feedback for facilitating project-based learning in an online environment. Using a mixed method approach, this paper examines graduate students’ participation and perceptions of peer feedback activity that supports project-based learning in an online instructional design course. Our findings indicate that peer feedback can be implemented in an online learning environment to effectively support project-based learning. Students actively participated in the peer feedback activity and responded positively about how the peer feedback activity facilitated their project-based learning experiences. The results of content analysis exploring the peer feedback reveal that learners …

The Seven Heads Of The Beast In Revelation 17, Ranko Stefanovic

Faculty Publications

Any interpretation based on headline news or current events for the purpose of date setting and popular excitement is speculative and subjective. Some have done so based on Revelation 17. Such interpretations never result in the strengthening of our faith in prophecy; in actuality, they weaken our confidence in it. When understood properly, the prophecies of Revelation have practical purposes: to teach us how to live today and prepare us for the future. A right understanding of prophecy will also inspire and motivate us to try to reach others with the gospel message.

D.A.R.E. Day! Implementing Evidence-Based Drug Education In An Adventist Educational Setting, Harvey J. Burnett Jr. Dec 2013

D.A.R.E. Day! Implementing Evidence-Based Drug Education In An Adventist Educational Setting, Harvey J. Burnett Jr.

Faculty Publications

Since 1983, the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) program has become one of the most popular and widely used school-based prevention programs to help empower youth to make responsible choices about drug use as well as to deal with violent behaviors such as bullying. Because young people in both Adventist and non-Adventist circles are often exposed to drugs through their peers, the media, or family members, incorporating programs like D.A.R.E. within the Seventh-day Adventist educational environment can provide a vital tool in equipping our young people to make responsible and safe choices about drugs.
