How Global Is Globalization?, Jac C. Heckelman, Andrew T. Young Dec 2013

How Global Is Globalization?, Jac C. Heckelman, Andrew T. Young

Economics Faculty Working Papers Series

We examine a balanced panel of globalization indices for 129 countries over the years 1991- 2010. We report evidence of cross-country sigma convergence in the overall globalization index. Sigma convergence also holds for each of the economic, political, and social globalization indices, as well as each sub-index within these indices. However, the evidence for stochastic convergence, based on panel unit root tests, is only strong for the political globalization index. Regarding the economic and social dimensions of globalization, respectively, we find evidence for stochastic convergence only in the flows and cultural proximity sub-indices. For the OECD subsample, evidence supports stochastic …

Prey Plasticity Responses To A Native And Nonnative Predator, Alexandra Hooks Dec 2013

Prey Plasticity Responses To A Native And Nonnative Predator, Alexandra Hooks

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Phenotypic plasticity in response to environmental stimuli is exceedingly common across systems and taxa. For instance, predation risk in many gastropods can induce a variety of defenses including growing thicker shells, growing shells of different shapes, and developing apertural teeth. However, the role of coevolution between species that produce these defense responses and their consumers is not well known. This thesis examines the responses of an ovoviviparous gastropod (Littorina saxatilis) with low dispersal from three different habitats (marsh habitat, rocky habitat, and cobble stone habitat) to the presence of chemical cues from a native (Dyspanopeus sayi) and nonnative (Hemigrapsus sanguineus) …

Physical And Chemical Modifications Of Surface Properties Lead To Alterations In Osteoblast Behavior, Kathryn Elizabeth Dorst Dec 2013

Physical And Chemical Modifications Of Surface Properties Lead To Alterations In Osteoblast Behavior, Kathryn Elizabeth Dorst

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Proper formation of the bone extracellular matrix (ECM), or osteoid, depends on the surface properties of pre-existing tissue and the aqueous chemical environment. Both of these factors greatly influence osteoblast migration, cytoskeletal organization, and calcium nodule production, important aspects when considering the biocompatibility of bone implants. By perturbing the physical and/or chemical micro-environment, it may be possible to elucidate effects on cellular function. To examine these factors, murine pre-osteoblasts (MC3T3-E1 subclones 4 and 24) were seeded on polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) substrates containing " wide" micro-patterned ridges (20 μ m width, 30 μ m pitch, & 2 μ m height), " narrow" …

An In Vitro Study Of The Anti-Biofilm Properties Of Proanthocyanidin And Chitosan In Pseudomonas Syringae Pv. Papulans, Kai Song

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Biofilm-forming bacteria are a form of planktonic microorganisms that can become resistant against conventional antibiotics. Because they are difficult to eradicate, biofilm-forming bacteria are extremely problematic for the medical industry areas. Thus, materials that can distort biofilm structure would be helpful for eliminating chronic infection and decreasing bacterial resistance. The primary objective of this study is to evaluate the anti-biofilm effect of two bio-derived substances, proanthocyanidin and chitosan. Proanthocyanidins are secondary plant metabolites that are reported to have antibiotic and antioxidant functions. Chitosan is a deacetylated derivative of chitin, which is abundant in the exoskeleton of crustaceans and insects. It …

Plasmonic Nanoclusters Based On Conjugated Polymer For Controlled Optical Output, Xuyi Wang

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Rational design and assembly of colloidal metal nanoparticles with fluorescent materials like organic dyes, conjugated polymers or colloidal quantum dots has stimulated intense research interest in the past decade in view of obtaining nanomaterials with controllable optical properties and with applicability in optoelectronics and biosensing. The interaction between a fluorescent molecule and a metal nanoparticle, also known as plasmon-exciton interaction, is determined by several factors such as type, shape and size of the metal nanoparticle, electronic properties of the fluorescent molecule, metal nanoparticle-fluorescence molecule separation distance and local nanoenvironment. By tuning one or more of such factors one can achieve …

These nanoclusters supported on various semiconductors, such as TiO2 and CdS showed outstanding catalytic properties for …

Does Lunatic Fringe Modify Itself?, Usman Aslam Dec 2013

Does Lunatic Fringe Modify Itself?, Usman Aslam

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Notch signaling plays an essential role in metazoan development, and dysregulation of its activity has been recognized as a cause for many diseases. The extracellular domain of the Notch receptor has numerous tandem epidermal growth factor-like repeats modified with O-fucose and O-glucose glycans that play important roles in Notch function. Elongation of O-fucose by β 3-N-acetylglucosaminyltransferases of the Fringe family is known to modulate Notch activity. In addition, preliminary data from the Haltiwanger laboratory suggests that one of the Fringe enzymes, Lunatic Fringe, may modify itself. Lunatic Fringe does not contain any epidermal growth factor-like repeats and is not known …

Structural And Biochemical Analysis Of The Hnrnpab Tandem Rrm Rna Binding Domain, Daniel Catt Dec 2013

Structural And Biochemical Analysis Of The Hnrnpab Tandem Rrm Rna Binding Domain, Daniel Catt

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Post-transcriptional trafficking of mRNA within the cell provides for spatial regulation of protein expression. Cis-acting localization elements known as zip codes located often in 3' untranslated regions (UTRs) of mRNA transcripts play a strong role in directing distribution within the cell through recognition by RNA-binding proteins. Hnrnpab is a protein with putative roles in this process with RNA-binding properties likely directed through tandem RNA Recognition Motifs (RRMs) that form a cooperative RNA Binding Domain (RBD). We purified this Hnrnpab RBD and carried out electrophoretic mobility shift assays (EMSAs) using the zip code region from the ActB gene to demonstrate high …

Identification Of Specific Residues Necessary For The Eviction Of H2a.Z-Containing Nucleosomes, Karole Nicole D'Orazio Dec 2013

Identification Of Specific Residues Necessary For The Eviction Of H2a.Z-Containing Nucleosomes, Karole Nicole D'Orazio

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

In this study, I investigated how the well-conserved histone variant H2A.Z is removed from promoters to prepare genes for transcription. H2A.Z is found at the majority of nucleosomes near promoters in place of the canonical histone H2A. Why H2A.Z is localized to gene promoters in all eukaryotes is unclear. One hypothesis is that H2A.Z marks nucleosomes for disassembly, thereby opening up promoters to give room for the transcription machinery to assemble. How H2A.Z-containing nucleosomes are removed from promoter sites is also unknown, but the Luk laboratory has recently found that ATP is necessary for this process. We propose that there …

Circulating Complexes Of The Vitamin D Binding Protein With G-Actin Induce Lung Injury By Targeting Endothelial Cells, Lingyin Ge Dec 2013

Circulating Complexes Of The Vitamin D Binding Protein With G-Actin Induce Lung Injury By Targeting Endothelial Cells, Lingyin Ge

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Actin is the most abundant and highly conserved intracellular protein in all eukaryotic cells. Cell necrosis can release actin into the extracellular environment where conditions favor spontaneous generation of F-actin filaments. A robust extracellular actin scavenger system consisting of gelsolin and the vitamin D binding protein (DBP) has evolved to sever F-actin filaments (gelsolin) then bind G-actin monomers (DBP) for subsequent clearance. This study investigated the role of DBP in this process using the DBP null mouse that has a systemic deficiency of DBP. Intravenous injection of G-actin into wild-type (DBP+/+) and DBP null (DBP-/-) mice showed that, contrary to …

Structure And Assembly Of Saccharomyces Cerevisiae Outer Spore Wall, Pei-Chen Coney Lin Dec 2013

Structure And Assembly Of Saccharomyces Cerevisiae Outer Spore Wall, Pei-Chen Coney Lin

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

In Saccharomycs cerevisiae, spores are a quiescent, stress-resistant cell type, which can survive for extended periods of time in unfavorable conditions until nutrient conditions are suitable. The outer layers of the spore wall contain chitosan and dityrosine, which are macromolecules specific for the spore. These layers are critical for resistance of the spores to adverse environmental stresses. The dityrosine layer is an unique polymer component of cross-linked N, N'-bisformyl dityrosine. This layer provides a shield from protein-sized attack such as lytic enzymes. For structural studies, we took advantage of the insolubility of the spore wall materials by using solid-state NMR …

Structural Characterization Of Individual Domains Of An Energy Dependent Mitochondrial Protease, Faiza Sheikh Dec 2013

Structural Characterization Of Individual Domains Of An Energy Dependent Mitochondrial Protease, Faiza Sheikh

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The ATP- dependent i-AAA protease pulls in and unwinds improperly folded and short-lived membrane proteins in order to maintain the integrity of the mitochondrial inner membrane. The i-AAA protease consists of an N-terminal domain, a single trans-membrane domain, a AAA ATPase domain and a metalloprotease domain. The role of the AAA domain is to unfold and translocate targeted proteins to protease domain where they are degraded. To further our understanding of the mechanism of this important enzyme, I sought to isolate and gain structural information on the individual domains of the i-AAA protease from the thermophilic eukaryote Myceliophthoya thermophile. I …

Development Of Iodinated Graphene Nanoplatelets Through Redox Reaction For Their Use As Ct Contrast Agents, Aditi Parag Gadgil Dec 2013

Development Of Iodinated Graphene Nanoplatelets Through Redox Reaction For Their Use As Ct Contrast Agents, Aditi Parag Gadgil

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Iodinated organic compounds currently dominate the market of contrast media for CAT imaging. When these compounds have to be used in large quantities for multiple CAT scans, it can result in adverse effects ranging from mild to severe. Secondly, iodine being the only element which gives the essential optical properties to the agent, large quantity of iodine is needed in preparing these compounds. Recently, graphene-based compounds are being researched for their exceptional optical properties, and their compatibility with the body tissues. If combined with iodine, they are believed to give a significant contrast with a less dose of the agent. …

An Exploration Of Alkyne-Alkyne Cross-Coupling Reactions And Attempts Towards Controlled Polymerization Of Diiodooctatetrayne, Allison Black Dec 2013

An Exploration Of Alkyne-Alkyne Cross-Coupling Reactions And Attempts Towards Controlled Polymerization Of Diiodooctatetrayne, Allison Black

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Polyynes are one-dimensional rigid carbon rods composed of alternating triple and single bonds. They have attracted much interest due to their electronic, optical, and physical properties. These carbon oligomers can serve as possible precursors to polydiacetylenes or graphitic ribbons, as subjecting ordered aggregates to heat and/ or irradiation can lead to topochemical polymerization. Furthermore, polyynes can act as models for understanding conjugation, and may be used to predict the properties of carbyne, the linear allotrope of carbon. In this work, model Stille and Cadiot-Chodkiewicz coupling reactions using iodoalkyne substrates were thoroughly investigated. Once optimal conditions were determined for each system, …

Untangling The Interactions: Structural Basis Of Nitric Oxide Regulated Cyclic-Di-Gmp Metabolism In Bacteria, Tanaya Lahiri Dec 2013

Untangling The Interactions: Structural Basis Of Nitric Oxide Regulated Cyclic-Di-Gmp Metabolism In Bacteria, Tanaya Lahiri

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Bacteria use numerous small molecules for cellular signaling. These primary and secondary messengers act within the cell to relay signal transduction and regulate distinct pathways. Among these the diatomic gas molecule nitric oxide (NO) and the nucleotide cyclic-di-GMP play central role in virulence, quorum sensing, and biofilm formation. In this dissertation, we have focused on H-NOX, a heme-nitric oxide/oxygen binding protein in the biofilm-dwelling bacterium Shewanella woodyi (Sw), which mediates NO-induced biofilm dispersal by modulating the activity of a dual-functioning diguanylate cyclase/phosphodiesterase enzyme that we have named HaCE, (H-NOX-associated cyclic-di-GMP enzyme). These enzymes tightly regulate the intracellular spatio-temporal concentrations of …

Designing A New Class Of Electrocatalysts For Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cells: Probing Size, Composition, And Structure Dependent Electrocatalytic Performance In High-Quality, One-Dimensional Noble Metal Nanostructures, Christopher Koenigsmann

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

A key challenge in the practical commercialization of PEMFCs is the extremely high cost and relatively poor durability of carbon supported Pt nanoparticle (Pt NP/C) electrocatalysts utilized in both the anode and cathode half-cells. Herein, we synthesize and characterize a new class of high-quality one-dimensional noble metal nanostructures as a potentially new and promising structural paradigm for the next generation of electrocatalyst materials. Specifically, we investigate the nature of the complex interplay amongst size, chemical composition, and electrocatalytic performance in high-quality elemental and bimetallic 1D noble metal nanowire systems with an emphasis on achieving efficient and sustainable methods for catalyst …

Poly(Diiododiacetylene): A Potential Precursor For New All-Carbon Materials, Daniel Joseph Resch Dec 2013

Poly(Diiododiacetylene): A Potential Precursor For New All-Carbon Materials, Daniel Joseph Resch

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Poly(diiododiacetylene) (PIDA) is a polymer consisting entirely of carbon and iodine. The polymer is prepared by cocrystallizing a bis(nitrile) oxalamide host with the monomer diiodobutadiyne. These compounds are held together by a halogen bond and an ordered 1,4-topochemical polymerization occurs in the solid state. The formation of the monomer cocrystals was found to be highly solvent dependent. Acetonitrile was found to greatly improve the yield of cocrystals over solvents used in the past. Cocrystals could not be obtained from other solvents such as dimethoxyethane and acetone. THF did give some cocrystal but the yield was poor. The use of acetonitrile …

Behavioral Polarization And Partisan Sorting: How Identity Alignment Drives Polarized Politics, Lilliana Hall Mason

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Partisan sorting is capable of driving mass political behavior. As work in social psychology demonstrates, social identities such as party, ideology, religion and race are powerful motivators of bias, activism and anger. Furthermore, when multiple social identities come into alignment, this alignment strengthens the effects of these identities on behavior, and strengthens the cognitive and motivational bases of ingroup bias and negative emotion by increasing the perceived differences between the groups, regardless of the true differences between them. Thus the effect of political identities and the alignment between them can occur independently of the extremity or importance of an individual's …

Protecting The Faithful From Their Faith: A Proposal For Snake-Handling In West Virginia, Robert W. Kerns Jr.

West Virginia Law Review

In the hills of Appalachia sing the hymns of the faithful, preaching a belief in the handling of snakes to prove loyalty to God. In West Virginia, persons may take up poisonous reptiles and pass them amidst crowds in the name of religion without legal restraints. While other states prohibit snake- handling in the name of safety, West Virginia law remains void on the issue. This Article introduces the practice of snake-handling and examines the risks posed by taking up poisonous animals whose bite may cause serious injury or death. This Article then suggests how the West Virginia law may …

The Paradoxes Of Restitution, Mark A. Edwards Dec 2013

The Paradoxes Of Restitution, Mark A. Edwards

West Virginia Law Review

Restitution following mass dispossession is often considered both ideal and impossible. Why? This Article identifies two previously unnamed paradoxes that undermine the possibility of restitution: the time-unworthiness paradox and the collective responsibility paradox. After developing these ideas, the Article examines them in the context of a particularly difficult and intractable case of dispossession and restitution. The Article draws upon interviews with restitution claimants whose stories reveal the paradoxes of restitution.
