Can We Graze 300+ Days?, Glen Aiken Oct 2013

Can We Graze 300+ Days?, Glen Aiken

Kentucky Grazing Conference

Dependence on stored feeds during the winter months has been necessary in order to maintain body condition and meet nutrient requirements of cattle herds; unfortunately, cost of stored feeds typically are a major part of the farm budget. We know, all too well, that hay shortages and unstable feed ingredient markets have reduced profit potential in cattle production. This has further placed higher demands on supplies of co-product feeds to cause prices of these alternative feeds to rise and make them less cost effective. There will likely be less reliance on concentrate and co-product feeds as the forage-based livestock industry …

Pastures For Horses, Robert Coleman Oct 2013

Pastures For Horses, Robert Coleman

Kentucky Grazing Conference

The horse evolved as a grazing animal. In order to consume enough forage to meet the horses’ nutritional needs a significant amount of time would be spent each day grazing. The pattern of selecting forage-moving to the next area starting to graze again can easily translate into 14 to 16 hours of grazing activity each day. The level of grazing activity will also be affected by the available forage and the daily access to pasture.

Pastures For Goats And Sheep, Greg Brann Oct 2013

Pastures For Goats And Sheep, Greg Brann

Kentucky Grazing Conference

Pasture for sheep is not that different than that for cattle but pasture for goats is very different. Sheep are grazers like cattle whereas goats are browsers like deer. Even though grass and clover are not a goats preference if all of the forage present is grass and clover goats will eat it. Due to goats and sheep being more prey animals than cattle they don’t like to wade off into tall vegetation, also it takes more energy for them to move through tall growth. Many plants that we traditionally consider weeds become desirable forbs when goats or sheep are …

The Role Of Weed Control In Profitable Pastures, Scott Flynn, Pat Burch Oct 2013

The Role Of Weed Control In Profitable Pastures, Scott Flynn, Pat Burch

Kentucky Grazing Conference

Pasture weeds compete for resources such as space, water, and nutrients. This competition reduces forage yield which in turn reduces the carrying capacity of a pasture. Although herbicide applications are needed to gain a quick upper hand on weed control most producers are deterred due to cost, the potential loss of pasture legumes, labor, or the belief that herbicide applications are required frequently to keep weed population under control. However, herbicide use in pastures should not be looked at in this manner but instead as an investment that can pay for itself very quickly and easily, and be long-term especially …

Role Of Legumes In Pastures, Garry D. Lacefield Oct 2013

Role Of Legumes In Pastures, Garry D. Lacefield

Kentucky Grazing Conference

Successful livestock production is dependent on forage programs which supply large quantities of adequate quality, homegrown feed. A major percentage of the feed units for beef (83%) and dairy (61%) cattle come from forages. In addition, forages supply an estimated 91%, 72%, 15% and 99% of the nutrients consumed by sheep and goats, horses, swine and ruminant wildlife, respectively.

(How I Think About) Kentucky's Pastures: One Of Kentucky's Untapped Resources, Jimmy C. Henning Oct 2013

(How I Think About) Kentucky's Pastures: One Of Kentucky's Untapped Resources, Jimmy C. Henning

Kentucky Grazing Conference

One of the privileges of old(er) age is the prerogative to take liberties with assigned tasks. At the risk of confusing producers and offending more scientifically-current forage scientists, the topic of pasture as an untapped resource presented an opportunity to address task from an unexpected angle. Certainly, Kentucky’s pastures are a resource with untapped potential. But the idea that their value as a resource depends on how we think about them is one worth pursuing.

An Examination Of How Women And Underrepresented Racial/Ethnic Minorities Experience Barriers In Biomedical Research And Medical Programs, Devasmita Chakraverty Oct 2013

An Examination Of How Women And Underrepresented Racial/Ethnic Minorities Experience Barriers In Biomedical Research And Medical Programs, Devasmita Chakraverty

Discipline-Based Education Research Group Speaker Series

Women in medicine and biomedical research often face challenges to their retention, promotion, and advancement to leadership positions (McPhillips et al., 2007); they take longer to advance their careers, tend to serve at less research‐intensive institutions and have shorter tenures compared to their male colleagues (White, McDade, Yamagata, & Morahan, 2012). Additionally, Blacks and Hispanics are the two largest minority groups that are vastly underrepresented in medicine and biomedical research in the United States (AAMC, 2012; NSF, 2011). The purpose of this study is to examine specific barriers reported by students and post‐degree professionals in the field through the following …

The Growth Of Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes On Atomic Force Microscope Tips, Michael Clemens, Dr. Robert Davis Oct 2013

The Growth Of Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes On Atomic Force Microscope Tips, Michael Clemens, Dr. Robert Davis

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) is a powerful instrument that has many applications in various fields of scientific research. It has the ability to image surfaces without requiring a high vacuum and has the ability to image samples that are in a fluid. It also is able to image surfaces without damaging them, and doesn’t require as much time in sample preparation. It has the resolution capability on the order of tens of nanometers (nm), which is one millionth of a meter. These qualities make the AFM very useful in doing scientific research.

Understanding The Absorption Edge Energy Shift Of Thorium Dioxide, Uranium Oxide, And Uranium Nitride In The Euv *Or* Optical Applications Of Uranium Thin-Film Compounds For The Extreme Ultraviolet And Soft X-Ray Region, Richard L. Sandberg, Dr. David D. Allred Oct 2013

David D. Allred

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Recently, the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) and soft x-ray region of the electromagnetic spectrum (between about 1 and 100 nm in wavelength or 20 eV to 5 keV photon energy) has become increasingly important in technological applications. The next generation of optical technologies will include EUV astronomy, high resolution soft x-ray microscopy for medical/materials science imaging, and EUV computer lithography. These technologies all require optical devices: mirrors, lenses, and other imaging equipment. The Brigham Young University’s EUV Optics research team has been studying the properties of uranium as an EUV optical material for several years. Here I review the research I …

Charactering Titanium Dioxide By Use Of Transmission Electron Microscope, Jason Neff, Dr. Richard Vanfleet Oct 2013

Charactering Titanium Dioxide By Use Of Transmission Electron Microscope, Jason Neff, Dr. Richard Vanfleet

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The original title submitted for my research was “Stacking Faults in GaN”. This study was aimed at employing the use of the Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) to understand and image defects in the crystal lattice of Gallium Nitride (GaN) that lead to stacking faults. Because of difficulties in the preparation of the material we decided to use the resources and time granted us to work on a project in conjunction with some individuals in the chemistry department. This new project is consistent with the prior investigation, in that the same procedures would be followed, with the same equipment, but with …

A Real-Time 3d Engine For Students, Joshua Gustafson, Dr. Robert P. Burton Oct 2013

A Real-Time 3d Engine For Students, Joshua Gustafson, Dr. Robert P. Burton

Journal of Undergraduate Research

A real-time 3D engine is a software system which allows a computer to generate and display three-dimensional graphics at interactive speeds. Faster, more capable, and less expensive video hardware has encouraged improvement in real-time engines and a diversification of their applications. They have been used traditionally in applications such as games and simulators, but increasingly are appearing in other applications such as home modeling, ticket purchasing, and other uses. Real-time 3D engines are therefore an area of understandable interest and considerable value to students of Computer Science.

Preliminary Paleostress And Deformation Analysis Of The Backlimb Of The Miners Mountain Uplift, Capitol Reef National Park, Utah, Samuel Sorber Oct 2013

Preliminary Paleostress And Deformation Analysis Of The Backlimb Of The Miners Mountain Uplift, Capitol Reef National Park, Utah, Samuel Sorber

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Measurement of fracture sets and small-scale folds along the backlimb of the Miners Mountain uplift in the northern portion of Capitol Reef National Park reveal a paleostress direction of approximately 20° azimuth, nearly 45° counterclockwise from the principle stress observed by Bump and Davis (2003). Slickenlines along the plane of a major fault across the hinge of the Miners Mountain uplift reveal right-lateral oblique-normal movement along the fault. This information has potential significance in modeling basement involvement as well as the kinematic development of this uplift.
