Scalar Self-Force For Eccentric Orbits Around A Schwarzschild Black Hole, Ian Vega, Barry Wardell, Peter Diener, Samuel Cupp, Roland Haas Oct 2013

Scalar Self-Force For Eccentric Orbits Around A Schwarzschild Black Hole, Ian Vega, Barry Wardell, Peter Diener, Samuel Cupp, Roland Haas

Faculty Publications

We revisit the problem of computing the self-force on a scalar charge moving along an eccentric geodesic orbit around a Schwarzschild black hole. This work extends previous scalar self-force calculations for circular orbits, which were based on a regular "effective" point-particle source and a full 3D evolution code. We find good agreement between our results and previous calculations based on a (1+1) time-domain code. Finally, our data visualization is unconventional: we plot the self-force through full radial cycles to create "self-force loops," which reveal many interesting features that are less apparent in standard presentations of eccentric-orbit self-force data. © 2013 …

Transfer Pricing: Un Guidelines — Brazil, Richard Thompson Ainsworth Oct 2013

Transfer Pricing: Un Guidelines — Brazil, Richard Thompson Ainsworth

Faculty Scholarship

The UN Practical Manual on Transfer Pricing for Developing Countries endeavors to provide “clearer guidance on the policy and administrative aspects of applying transfer pricing analysis.” Chapter 10 is particularly noteworthy. It sets out specific country practices. The rules in Brazil, China, India and South Africa are offered as templates for developing countries to follow.

This article considers the Brazilian contribution to Chapter 10. Although some writers believe that developing countries should adopt the Brazilian model this article suggests otherwise. Even though it is a theoretically simple system, some aspects of the Brazilian model consistently work to the fiscal disadvantage …

Understanding Islam Through Art Education, Amy Blake Spencer, Donna Kay Beattie Oct 2013

Understanding Islam Through Art Education, Amy Blake Spencer, Donna Kay Beattie

Journal of Undergraduate Research

With the magnitude of the conflicts in the middle-east, it is increasingly important to teach students tolerance for people of the Islamic faith. As an Art Educator, I found this an ideal time and opportunity to research the many aspects of Islamic art and to encapsulate these principles into a visual arts curriculum unit for students at the ninth and tenth grade levels. The unit includes all elements of Art Education: Art History, Studio, Aesthetics, Art Criticism, and Visual Culture.

Identification Of Extreme Precipitation Threat Across Midlatitude Regions Based On Short-Wave Circulations, Shih-Yu (Simon) Wang, Robert E. Davies, Robert R. Gillies Oct 2013

Identification Of Extreme Precipitation Threat Across Midlatitude Regions Based On Short-Wave Circulations, Shih-Yu (Simon) Wang, Robert E. Davies, Robert R. Gillies

Plants, Soils, and Climate Faculty Publications

The most severe thunderstorms, producing extreme precipitation, occur over subtropical and midlatitude regions. Atmospheric conditions conducive to organized, intense thunderstorms commonly involve the coupling of a low-level jet (LLJ) with a synoptic short wave. The midlatitude synoptic activity is frequently modulated by the circumglobal teleconnection (CGT), in which meridional gradients of the jet stream act as a guide for short Rossby waves. Previous research has linked extreme precipitation events with either the CGT or the LLJ but has not linked the two circulation features together. In this study, a circulation-based index was developed by combining (a) the degree of the …

Humidity And Temperature Effect On Properties Of Transmission Gratings Recorded In Pva/Aa-Based Photopolymer Layers, Tatsiana Mikulchyk, Suzanne Martin, Izabela Naydenova Oct 2013

Humidity And Temperature Effect On Properties Of Transmission Gratings Recorded In Pva/Aa-Based Photopolymer Layers, Tatsiana Mikulchyk, Suzanne Martin, Izabela Naydenova

Articles

This paper explores the effects of humidity on gratings recorded in a polyvinylalcohol–acrylamide photopolymer medium. Investigation of the behaviour of transmission gratings exposed to high humidity is of significant interest for two reasons, firstly because the grating's sensitivity to humidity can be exploited for the development of irreversible humidity indicators, secondly because too much sensitivity to humidity can limit the use of these materials in applications where an environmentally stable hologram is needed. In this paper we focus on the effect of high humidity on the properties of volume phase transmission gratings recorded in PVA/AA photopolymer layers in the temperature …

Examining The Relationship Between Drought Development And Rapid Changes In The Evaporative Stress Index, Jason A. Otkin, Martha C. Anderson, Christopher Hain, Mark D. Svoboda

National Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications

In this study, the ability of a new drought metric based on thermal infrared remote sensing imagery to provide early warning of an elevated risk for drought intensification is assessed. This new metric, called the rapid change index (RCI), is designed to highlight areas undergoing rapid changes in moisture stress as inferred from weekly changes in the evaporative stress index (ESI) generated using the Atmosphere–Land Exchange Inverse (ALEXI) surface energy balance model. Two case study analyses across the central United States revealed that the initial appearance of negative RCI values indicative of rapid increases in moisture stress preceded the introduction …

Polymers Functioning As Artificial Muscles, Nicholas Stanonis, William Pitt Oct 2013

Polymers Functioning As Artificial Muscles, Nicholas Stanonis, William Pitt

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Current research in the field of polymers has led to the development of synthetic muscles that function similar to biological muscles. Scientists have engineered polymers to contract up to one thousand times their original volume when exposed to changes in light, temperature, voltage, or pH. The ability to contract and relax makes these polymers ideal artificial muscles. Currently, artificial muscles are being applied in the field of robotics. NASA is in the process of developing a dust wiper for their planetary rovers that operates with an artificial muscle. A common goal that many scientists are working towards is the implementation …

Comparison Of The Variance In The R-Value Calculated Using The Power Law In If Steel To Experimental Measurements, Craig Przybyla, Dr. Brent Adams Oct 2013

Comparison Of The Variance In The R-Value Calculated Using The Power Law In If Steel To Experimental Measurements, Craig Przybyla, Dr. Brent Adams

Journal of Undergraduate Research

As advances in engineering and technology increasingly require engineers and scientists to work in smaller length scales, they must have a greater understanding about how materials and their properties behave at these scales. This is true particularly in the field of mechanical engineering with the development of MicroElectroMechanical Systems or MEMS. These are tiny mechanical systems that are only measured in micrometers and that can only be seen with the aid of high powered microscopes. In order to build MEMS that are reliable and perform as they should, engineers not only must have an understanding of the material properties of …

Algorithmic Composition Using A Computational Model Of Music, Morgan Quigley, Dr. Steve Ricks Oct 2013

Algorithmic Composition Using A Computational Model Of Music, Morgan Quigley, Dr. Steve Ricks

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Algorithmic composition involves the application of systematic mathematical methods to the compositional process. Sequences of pitches, rhythms, or other musical elements are manipulated as if they were abstract mathematical symbols, and the resultant music contains patterns that can either be simple enough to recognize audibly or so complex that they are revealed only through detailed score analysis.

Towards A Growth Mindset In Assessment, Geoff N. Masters Oct 2013

Towards A Growth Mindset In Assessment, Geoff N. Masters

Assessment and Reporting

The approaches we take to assessing learning, the kinds of tasks we assign and the way we report success or failure at school send powerful messages to students not only about their own learning, but also about the nature of learning itself. Assessment and reporting processes shape student, parent and community beliefs about learning – sometimes in unintended ways.

This essay describes three general approaches to evaluating and providing feedback on the outcomes of learning. Each approach is based on a particular way of thinking about what it means to learn successfully, and each has implications for how students view …

New Constant-Force Mechanism Configurations, Bart D. Frischknecht, Dr. Larry L. Howell Oct 2013

New Constant-Force Mechanism Configurations, Bart D. Frischknecht, Dr. Larry L. Howell

Journal of Undergraduate Research

In machine design it is often desirable to correlate output force with displacement. Incorporating a translational spring into the design creates a linear relationship between force and displacement. In contrast, if a constant output force is desired independent of displacement, solutions include pneumatic or hydraulic systems or complicated systems of weights or springs. A simple lightweight mechanical device that exhibits constant-force output over a significant displacement would have the potential of replacing complicated current systems. It could also provide an improved solution for systems where a constant-force output is desirable but has not yet been proven feasible.

Sounds Of A People: An Ethnomusicological Study In Rio De Janeiro, Scott Harwood Homer, Dr. Ron Brough Oct 2013

Sounds Of A People: An Ethnomusicological Study In Rio De Janeiro, Scott Harwood Homer, Dr. Ron Brough

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The music of Brazil has a rich heritage and great diversity. Its rhythms, developed by street musicians, are sophisticated and challenging. The people I met know well the songs they hear live and on the radio, and the musicians respond to this by constantly performing creative arrangements of what is formally called “Brazilian Popular Music” (MPB in Portuguese). The result is a culture in which music is a pleasurable part of daily life for most everyone.

Prototype Modeling Vs. Item Response Theory – A Paradigm Shift For Measurement Professionals, Joseph Yeager, Linda Sommer, Juliette Faughnan, Christophe Geerkens Oct 2013

Prototype Modeling Vs. Item Response Theory – A Paradigm Shift For Measurement Professionals, Joseph Yeager, Linda Sommer, Juliette Faughnan, Christophe Geerkens

The Qualitative Report

In science, the usual research mode is to discover cause - and - effect mechanisms operating behind superficial reality. Aviation, for example, uses prototype modeling to develop improved aircraft from one generation to the next. In stark contrast to prototype modeling’s search for causal mechanisms, assessment technologies remain dominated by probability strategies — which is why psychological assessment lags behind the hard sciences. A major difference in results exists between inferences produced through item response theory versus the cause - effect prototyping strategies of aerospace and other techno - savvy industries. Parallel to aerospace strategies, systems analysis of language, using …
