Global Fossil Energy Markets And Climate Change Mitigation: An Analysis With Remind, Nico Bauer, Ioanna Mouratiadou, Gunnar Luderer, Lavinia Baumstark, Robert J. Brecha, Ottmar Edenhofer, Elmar Kriegler Oct 2013

Global Fossil Energy Markets And Climate Change Mitigation: An Analysis With Remind, Nico Bauer, Ioanna Mouratiadou, Gunnar Luderer, Lavinia Baumstark, Robert J. Brecha, Ottmar Edenhofer, Elmar Kriegler

Physics Faculty Publications

We analyze the dynamics of global fossil resource markets under different assumptions for the supply of fossil fuel resources, development pathways for energy demand, and climate policy settings. Resource markets, in particular the oil market, are characterized by a large discrepancy between costs of resource extraction and commodity prices on international markets. We explain this observation in terms of (a) the intertemporal scarcity rent, (b) regional price differentials arising from trade and transport costs, (c) heterogeneity and inertia in the extraction sector. These effects are captured by the REMIND model. We use the model to explore economic effects of changes …

Only Hindsight: Where Are The Historian Futurists?, John M. Rudy

Interpreting the Civil War: Connecting the Civil War to the American Public

A friend who is planning a pie-in-the-sky conference (about which I'm super excited) texted me today with a quick question. "Who would be a good 'Historian of the Future?'" he asked, adding the bonus that I could dream big. "Money no object," the next text read.

I was at a loss for a few minutes. Who is the historian of the future? Who is trying to visualize that skill-set, categorize that life, read the trends of the past and plot the course of history yet to come? [excerpt]

Development Of A New Sugar Receptor, William D. Thomas, Dr. Paul B. Savage Oct 2013

Development Of A New Sugar Receptor, William D. Thomas, Dr. Paul B. Savage

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Oligosaccharides are enormously rich in structural information. They are often branched and can be bonded together by a variety of different linkages, unlike polypeptides which contain identical peptide bonds.1 For this reason, polysaccharides play a crucial role in cell recognition.2 Although carbohydrate recognition is known to take place, the event is not well understood.3 In order to better understand the hydrophobic interactions that enhance binding between sugar based receptors and various small hydrophobic molecules in aqueous solvents, the synthesis of a glucose based cavity was attempted (see Fig. 3). The cavity was carefully designed to maximize hydrophobic interactions with small …

Operational Multi-Angle Hyperspectral Sensing For Feature Detection, Charles R. Bostater, Donald K. Brooks Oct 2013

Operational Multi-Angle Hyperspectral Sensing For Feature Detection, Charles R. Bostater, Donald K. Brooks

Ocean Engineering and Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

Remote sensing results of land and water surfaces from airborne and satellite platforms are dependent upon the illumination geometry and the sensor viewing geometry. Correction of pushbroom hyperspectral imagery can be achieved using bidirectional reflectance factors (BRF's) image features based upon their multi-angle hyperspectral signatures. Ground validation of features and targets utilize non-imaging sensors such as hemispherical goniometers. In this paper, a new linear translation based hyperspectral imaging goniometer system is described. Imagery and hyperspectral signatures obtained from a rotation stage platform and the new linear non-hemispherical goniometer system shows applications and a multi-angle correction approach for multi-angle hyperspectral pushbroom …

Global Change Factors On Ecosystem Invasibility, Raj Lal, Jeffrey Dukes, Michael J. Schuster, Nick G. Smith Oct 2013

Global Change Factors On Ecosystem Invasibility, Raj Lal, Jeffrey Dukes, Michael J. Schuster, Nick G. Smith

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Current climate and human-induced changes are projected to alter many regimes of ecosystem functioning. It is projected that invasive species, nonnative species that can be of great detriment to an ecosystem, will benefit under these conditions. The Prairie Invasion and Climate Experiment (PRICLE) studies the effects of two global change factors – N addition and altered precipitation – on invasive species success and the traits that are selected for in a mixed-grass prairie ecosystem. PRICLE is a two by two factorial design over three replications in a restored mixed-grass prairie ecosystem. The major findings from the community traits examination of …

Formation Of Nanodiamonds At Near-Ambient Conditions Via Microplasma Dissociation Of Ethanol Vapour, Ajay Kumar, Pin Ann Lin, Albert Xue, Boyi Hao, Yoke Khin Yap, R. Mohan Sankaran Oct 2013

Formation Of Nanodiamonds At Near-Ambient Conditions Via Microplasma Dissociation Of Ethanol Vapour, Ajay Kumar, Pin Ann Lin, Albert Xue, Boyi Hao, Yoke Khin Yap, R. Mohan Sankaran

Department of Physics Publications

Clusters of diamond-phase carbon, known as nanodiamonds, exhibit novel mechanical, optical and biological properties that have elicited interest for a wide range of technological applications. Although diamond is predicted to be more stable than graphite at the nanoscale, extreme environments are typically used to produce nanodiamonds. Here we show that nanodiamonds can be stably formed in the gas phase at atmospheric pressure and neutral gas temperatures <100 °C by dissociation of ethanol vapour in a novel microplasma process. Addition of hydrogen gas to the process allows in flight purification by selective etching of the non-diamond carbon and stabilization of the nanodiamonds. The nanodiamond particles are predominantly between 2 and 5 nm in diameter, and exhibit cubic diamond, n-diamond and lonsdaleite crystal structures, similar to nanodiamonds recovered from meteoritic residues. These results may help explain the origin of nanodiamonds in the cosmos, and offer a simple and inexpensive route for the …

Challenges In Estimating The Causal Effect Of An Intervention With Pre-Post Data (Part 1): Definition & Identification Of The Causal Parameter, Ann M. Weber, Mark J. Van Der Laan, Maya L. Petersen Oct 2013

Challenges In Estimating The Causal Effect Of An Intervention With Pre-Post Data (Part 1): Definition & Identification Of The Causal Parameter, Ann M. Weber, Mark J. Van Der Laan, Maya L. Petersen

U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

There is mixed evidence of the effectiveness of interventions operating on a large scale. Although the lack of consistent results is generally attributed to problems of implementation or governance of the program, the failure to find a statistically significant effect (or the success of finding one) may be due to choices made in the evaluation. To demonstrate the potential limitations and pitfalls of the usual analytic methods used for estimating causal effects, we apply the first half of a roadmap for causal inference to a pre-post evaluation of a community-level, national nutrition program. Selection into the program was non-random and …

Distel: A Distributed El+ Ontology Classifier, Raghava Mutharaju, Pascal Hitzler, Prabhaker Mateti Oct 2013

Distel: A Distributed El+ Ontology Classifier, Raghava Mutharaju, Pascal Hitzler, Prabhaker Mateti

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

OWL 2 EL ontologies are used to model and reason over data from diverse domains such as biomedicine, geography and road traffic. Data in these domains is increasing at a rate quicker than the increase in main memory and computation power of a single machine. Recent efforts in OWL reasoning algorithms lead to the decrease in classification time from several hours to a few seconds even for large ontologies like SNOMED CT. This is especially true for ontologies in the description logic EL+ (a fragment of the OWL 2 EL profile). Reasoners such as Pellet, Hermit, ELK etc. make …

Stringsauto And Mapsss Results For Oaei 2013, Michelle Cheatham, Pascal Hitzler Oct 2013

Stringsauto And Mapsss Results For Oaei 2013, Michelle Cheatham, Pascal Hitzler

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

StringsAuto and MapSSS are two closely related ontology alignment systems. The StringsAuto matcher seeks to explore the limits of a syntactic-only approach to alignment. The MapSSS system then expands on this work by embedding the syntactic matching of StringsAuto within a more complete alignment system that also makes use of semantic and structural information. In this paper we describe the basic operation of the two systems and discuss their performance in the OAEI 2013 evaluation.

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Works

We report results on the high-field magneto-optical response of four aqueous, lyotropic, chromonic liquid crystal formulations in the isotropic phase. Measurements of the field-induced birefringence at temperatures above the isotropic-nematic coexistence region at high magnetic fields reveal qualitative differences in different materials; these differences can be attributed to the nature of aggregation and are discussed within the context of competing aggregation models. Extending these measurements to very high fields and large optical phase differences reveals the presence of an unexpected optical phenomenon: magnetic field-induced circular birefringence, measured in the Voigt geometry, in a system containing no molecularly chiral species. Possible …

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Ag nanostructures with surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) activities have been fabricated by applying laser-direct writing (LDW) technique on silver oxide (AgOx) thin films. By controlling the laser powers, multi-level Raman imaging of organic molecules adsorbed on the nanostructures has been observed. This phenomenon is further investigated by atomic-force microscopy and electromagnetic calculation. The SERS-active nanostructure is also fabricated on transparent and flexible substrate to demonstrate our promising strategy for the development of novel and low-cost sensing chip.

Longitudinal Emittance Blowup In The Large Hadron Collider, P. Baudrenghien, T. Mastoridis Oct 2013

Longitudinal Emittance Blowup In The Large Hadron Collider, P. Baudrenghien, T. Mastoridis

Physics

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) relies on Landau damping for longitudinal stability. To avoid decreasing the stability margin at high energy, the longitudinal emittance must be continuously increased during the acceleration ramp. Longitudinal blowup provides the required emittance growth. The method was implemented through the summer of 2010. Band-limited RF phase-noise is injected in the main accelerating cavities during the whole ramp of about 11 min. Synchrotron frequencies change along the energy ramp, but the digitally created noise tracks the frequency change. The position of the noise-band, relative to the nominal synchrotron frequency, and the bandwidth of the spectrum are …

The Science And Psychology Of Survival, Thomas Kroll

Arboretum Lectures

Our brains and bodies are wired to survive-whether you are lost in the mountains, lost in a foreign city, or just feeling lost in a crowd. It's not about how many matches, maps, or knives you have, but how adaptable you are and how persistent you are about wanting to live.
