Corrosion Behavior Of A High Strength Low Alloy Steel Under Hydrostatic Pressure In Deep Ocean, Hai-Jing Sun, Li Liu, Ying Li

Journal of Electrochemistry

The corrosion behavior of a high strength low alloy steel (HSLA steel) in 3.5% NaCl solution under hydrostatic pressure (HP) in deep ocean has been investigated by performing weight loss measurement, obtaining potentiodynamic polarization curve and emplying electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) using the set up for simulation of deep sea environment in laboratory. The results were compared with that at atmospheric pressure and the influence of HP was emphatically discussed. The results revealed identical corrosion mechanism for HSLA steel at 3.5 × 106 Pa and 1 × 105 Pa. Howevere, the development of such a corrosion process was …

Corrosion Resistance Of Low Pressure Cold Sprayed Al Coating On Q235 Steel In Seawater, Xiang-Bo Li, Li-Kun Xu, Shan-Guang Qiu, Jia Wang, Guo-Sheng Huang, Cai-Chang Dong

Journal of Electrochemistry

Taking aluminium (Al) powder mixed with 10% (by volume) of Al2O3 powder as raw materials, the Al coating was prepared on the Q235 carbon steel substrate using a portable low pressure cold spraying equipment. Through the measurements of the corrosion potential and potentiodynamic polarization, the electrochemical corrosion behavior of the low pressure cold sprayed Al coating in seawater was studied in comparison with those of the Al coatings deposited with high pressure cold spray and thermal spray processes. At the same time, the surface and cross-section morphologies of these coatings were observed with scanning electron microscope. The …

Corrosion Behavior Of Zinc Covered With Thin Electrolyte Layers Under External Electric Field, Xu-Jie Yuan, Jun-Xi Zhang, Shi-Ming Zhang, Tian Tan, Qi-Meng Chen Oct 2013

Corrosion Behavior Of Zinc Covered With Thin Electrolyte Layers Under External Electric Field, Xu-Jie Yuan, Jun-Xi Zhang, Shi-Ming Zhang, Tian Tan, Qi-Meng Chen

Journal of Electrochemistry

The corrosion behavior of zinc covered with thin electrolyte layers (TELs) under an application of external electric field was investigated by performing corrosion potential and cathodic polarization current measurements. The results showed that the Ecorr and ic values first increased and then decreased with the increase of electrolyte layer thickness. Pure zinc exhibited the maximum corrosion potential as the TELs increased to 400 μm under the controls of cathodic process and corrosion products. The application of external electric field resulted in either a negative shift in corrosion potential of zinc or an increase of cathodic current. The effect of external …

Generation And Formal Analysis Of Algorithmic Fractals In Hyperspaces, Minglei Xu, Dr. Robert P. Burton Oct 2013

Generation And Formal Analysis Of Algorithmic Fractals In Hyperspaces, Minglei Xu, Dr. Robert P. Burton

Journal of Undergraduate Research

n-D fractals, where n> 4, have long been under scrutiny for their mathematical properties and artistic values. Multi-dimensional space filling curves, for instance, are a focus for contemporary topologists. Notable works in this area include the uses of quaternions, commutative hyper-complex calculus, and, most recently, doubling processes. However, all these discoveries have been limited to algebraic fractals such as the Mandelbrot set and the Julia sets. Algorithmic fractals are equally interesting since they serve as bridges connecting chaos theory to well studied formal language theory.1 2-D and 3-D algorithmic fractals are conventionally generated and analyzed using L-systems and iterated function …

Dartmouth Scholarship

We have analysed the XMM–Newton and Chandra data overlapping ∼16.5 deg2 of Sloan Digital Sky Survey Stripe 82, including ∼4.6 deg2 of proprietary XMM–Newton data that we present here. In total, 3362 unique X-ray sources are detected at high significance. We derive the XMM–Newton number counts and compare them with our previously reported Chandra logN–logS relations and other X-ray surveys. The Stripe 82 X-ray source lists have been matched to multiwavelength catalogues using a maximum likelihood estimator algorithm. We discovered the highest redshift (z = 5.86) quasar yet identified in an X-ray survey. We …

An Apparent Angular Unconformity In Western Connecticut, Stanley Schleifer, Nazrul I. Khandaker, Adisa Charles, Hernando Martinez, Shirley Jackson, Chiemeka Ihebom

Publications and Research

The recent extension, to the north, of the U. S. Route 7 ‘superhighway’ in the town of Brookfield, Connecticut has involved the excavation of crystalline bedrock of lower Paleozoic to upper Proterozoic age in the area. The road cuts produced by this excavation have exposed some interesting features of structure and lithology. An outcrop, observed by the authors off the east side of route 7, at grid coordinates 41.482444 N, 73.415307 W is of particular interest. It appears, to the casual observer to be an angular unconformity. Maps and publications regarding this area of Western Connecticut support the likelihood of …

"Fighting Against Ourselves, Why History Continues To Repeat Itself?", Rysheema J. Dixon

Capstone Collection

My capstone will focus on how self-mobilization among Blacks and Indians can affect change in the United States and India to build a stronger sense of community and improve their rights to education. This paper outlines multiple approaches to fighting against oppressors, combating ethnic to ethnic conflicts and obtaining educational rights. Many cultures have difficulty teaching and learning from one another and it inhibits them from fighting for their rights as citizens. Indians in India and Black Americans have similar background stories in reference to slavery and the caste system but live in two different realities. Identity also plays an …

Bumps In The Road: An Investigation Of Students’ Decisions Regarding Graduate School, Samantha Wendler Oct 2013

Bumps In The Road: An Investigation Of Students’ Decisions Regarding Graduate School, Samantha Wendler

NERA Conference Proceedings 2013

The value of higher education, including graduate education, has been a recent subject of debate. However, economic benefits of advanced degrees have been shown, including higher salary and lower unemployment rates. In general, the benefit of a graduate education seems to outweigh the costs. Despite these benefits, some otherwise prepared individuals choose not to attend graduate school. Others who enroll never complete their degree. We examined characteristics of these groups, including the value they place on graduate education, compared to those who still plan on attending, currently attend, or completed their degree.

Differences And Similarities Between U.S. And Non-U.S. Citizens In Graduate School Perceptions, Experiences And Career Preparation, Fred Cline

NERA Conference Proceedings 2013

International students account for a significant percentage of enrollees in graduate programs in the United States. Nearly 30% of the doctoral degrees awarded in the U.S. go to non-U.S. citizens, and about two-thirds remain in the U.S. for their career. This study compares survey results from 1,000 international and 4,200 U.S. respondents on their beliefs about the value of a graduate degree, the quality and sources of information they received about graduate school and careers, and their job satisfaction after completing their degree. Findings suggest that international students need additional support and information when considering careers related to graduate degrees.

State Exam Scores In Course Grade Calculation: Review Of Current Practice And Some Proposed Guidelines, Zachary B. Warner

NERA Conference Proceedings 2013

Many states use EOC exams as graduation requirements and some require the inclusion of student EOC exam scores in the calculation of final course grades. This practice has some advantages, including ensuring that student grades reflect state standards. Still, there are many considerations when taking a score from a standardized measure and incorporating it into a classroom grading system. This paper reviews current practice around this issue in several states and highlights the challenges faced by a state, district, or school wishing to combine EOC exam scores and course grades. Guidelines for policymakers are included and educational implications are discussed.

The Effectiveness Of Learning Communities On Students' Knowledge Acquisition And Perceived Self-Efficacy, Andrea S. Salis

NERA Conference Proceedings 2013

Previous literature has shown that the use of learning communities in higher education enhances student academic performance, social engagement and retention. Much of the literature on learning communities has focused on students attending two or more courses that may be linked by learning goals, assignments or projects. This study examines the students’ academic performance and perceived self-efficacy in the learning community – “Get Active- Be Healthy” that links a lecture-based health course with an experiential learning, physical activity course.
