Doctoral
This research consists of a portfolio of original musical compositions, accompanied by a commentary which examines the aesthetic and technical aspects of each piece and of the body of work as a whole. It traces the development of a mature and original compositional style. The works presented share a focus on the concept of line. This concept is explored in a range of diverse instrumentations (orchestra, choral, solo instrument/voice, chamber ensemble, electronics) and diverse compositional methods (fully-notated scores, graphic scores, devised improvised schemes). The emphasis is on lines that are constrained within a particular pitch register, while being explored fully …

Social Group Detection Based Routing In Delay Tolerant Networks, Roy Cabaniss, Srinivasa S. Vulli, Sanjay Madria
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
When implementing Mobile Ad Hoc Networks, a key characteristic of the network is the mobility pattern of the nodes. Based on the application, nodes can follow semi-predictable patterns, such as the routes followed by Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks, or the more strict schedules followed by aerial reconnaissance. Optimal routing schemes tend to take advantage of information regarding these patterns. In social environments, such as wildlife tracking or sending messages between humans, the devices and/or users will follow regular contact habits, tending to encounter social groups in which they participate. By identifying these groups, the patterns are used to optimize routing …

Physics & Astronomy: Faculty Publications
This paper reports the results of a theoretical and experimental study of how the initial circulation of ring-shaped Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) can be probed by time-of-flight (TOF) images. We have studied the dynamics of a BEC after release from a toroidal trap potential by solving the three-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation. The trap and condensate characteristics matched those of a recent experiment. The circulation, experimentally imparted to the condensate by stirring, was simulated by imprinting a linear azimuthal phase on the initial condensate wave function. The simulated TOF images were in good agreement with the experimental data. We find that upon …
The Effects Of Teacher Preparation Programs On Novice Teachers Regarding Classroom Management, Academic Preparation, Time Management, And Self Efficacy, Dolores Carr
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This study examines the national concern regarding types of teacher preparation programs (traditional, alternative) and their effects on classroom management, academic preparation, time management, and self-efficacy of novice teachers. What are the decisions and influences that determine highly qualified teachers; can these traits be learned? Does the type of training a teacher receives determine his/her effectiveness? Who determines the standards for teacher preparation programs? What are the challenges facing teacher preparation programs? Who will be responsible for reform and improvement? A review of literature provides direction in answering these questions. The findings uncovered that the type of teacher preparation programs, …
Between The Man And Beast: Reactions To Evolutionary Science In Alfred, Lord Tennyson's Idylls Of The King And T. H. White's The Once And Future King, Mary Feldman
Masters Theses
The development and popular acceptance of evolutionary theory in the nineteenth century, of which Charles Darwin was perhaps the leading voice, produced perhaps the greatest cultural cataclysm of the Modern age. It held theological and philosophical implications beyond the scientific realm, profoundly impacting the humanities as well as science. The Arthurian legend, a story that has been told and retold for centuries before and after Darwin, offers us a unique opportunity to examine how a preexisting story was radically altered in the light of evolution. Alfred, Lord Tennyson's Idylls of the King and T. H. White's The Once and Future …

Directed Search For Continuous Gravitational Waves From The Galactic Center, J. Aasi, Marco Cavaglia, For Full List Of Authors, See Publisher's Website.
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
We present the results of a directed search for continuous gravitational waves from unknown, isolated neutron stars in the Galactic center region, performed on two years of data from LIGO's fifth science run from two LIGO detectors. The search uses a semicoherent approach, analyzing coherently 630 segments, each spanning 11.5 hours, and then incoherently combining the results of the single segments. It covers gravitational wave frequencies in a range from 78 to 496 Hz and a frequency-dependent range of first-order spindown values down to -7.86 x 10-8 Hz/s at the highest frequency. No gravitational waves were detected. The 90% …
Plasmonic Scaling Of Superconducting Metamaterials, Cihan Kurter, John A. Abrahams, Gennady Shvets, Steven Mark Anlage
Plasmonic Scaling Of Superconducting Metamaterials, Cihan Kurter, John A. Abrahams, Gennady Shvets, Steven Mark Anlage
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
Superconducting metamaterials are utilized to study the approach to the plasmonic limit simply by tuning temperature to modify the superfluid density, and thus the superfluid plasma frequency. We examine the persistence of artificial magnetism in a metamaterial made with superconductors in the plasmonic limit, and compare to the electromagnetic behavior of normal metals as a function of frequency as the plasma frequency is approached from below. Spiral-shaped Nb thin film meta-atoms of scaled dimensions are employed to explore the plasmonic behavior in these superconducting metamaterials, and the scaling condition allows extraction of the temperature dependent superfluid density, which is found …

Nitroxide-Functionalized Graphene Oxide From Graphite Oxide, Yazmin I. Avila-Vega, Cesar C. Leyva-Porras, Marcela Mireles, Manuel Quevedo-Lopez, Javier Macossay-Torres, Jose Bonilla-Cruz
School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Chemistry)
A facile method for preparing functionalized graphene oxide single layers with nitroxide groups is reported herein. Highly oxidized graphite oxide (GO=90.6%) was obtained, slightly modifying an improved Hummer’s method. Oxoammonium salts (OS) were investigated to introduce nitroxide groups to GO, resulting in a one-step functionalization and exfoliation. The mechanisms of functionalization/exfoliation are proposed, where the oxidation of aromatic alcohols to ketone groups, and the formation of alkoxyamine species are suggested. Two kinds of functionalized graphene oxide layers (GOFT1 and GOFT2) were obtained by controlling the amount of OS added. GOFT1 and GOFT2 exhibited a high interlayer spacing (d0001 = 1.12nm), …
Symmetry Robust Descriptor For Non-Rigid Surface Matching, Zhiyuan Zhang, Kangkang Yin, Kelvin W. C. Foong
Symmetry Robust Descriptor For Non-Rigid Surface Matching, Zhiyuan Zhang, Kangkang Yin, Kelvin W. C. Foong
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In this paper, we propose a novel shape descriptor that is robust in differentiating intrinsic symmetric points on geometric surfaces. Our motivation is that even the state-of-theart shape descriptors and non-rigid surface matching algorithms suffer from symmetry flips. They cannot differentiate surface points that are symmetric or near symmetric. Hence a left hand of one human model may be matched to a right hand of another. Our Symmetry Robust Descriptor (SRD) is based on a signed angle field, which can be calculated from the gradient fields of the harmonic fields of two point pairs. Experiments show that the proposed shape …

Implementation Of Limit States And Load Resistance Design Of Slopes, Rodrigo Salgado, Sang Inn Woo, Faraz S. Tehrani, Yanbei Zhang, Monica Prezzi
JTRP Technical Reports
A logical framework is developed for load and resistance factor design (LRFD) of slopes based on reliability analysis. LRFD of slopes with resistance factors developed in this manner ensures that a target probability of slope failure is not exceeded. Three different target probabilities of failure (0.0001, 0.001 and 0.01) are considered in this report. The ultimate limit state for slope stability (formation of a slip surface and considerable movement along this slip surface) is defined using the Bishop simplified method with a factor of safety equal to unity. Gaussian random field theory is used to generate random realizations of a …

On Closed Subsets Of Non-Commutative Association Schemes Of Rank 6, Jose Vera
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
The notion of an association scheme is a generalization of the concept of a group. In fact, the so-called thin association schemes correspond in a well-understood way to groups. In this thesis, we look at the structure of non-commutative association schemes of rank 6. We will show that a non-normal closed subset of a noncommutative association scheme of rank 6, must have rank 2. The so-called Coxeter schemes of rank 6 which we present in Section 4 provide examples of association schemes of rank 6 with non-normal closed subsets of rank 2. It is shown that normal closed subsets of …

Chemistry and Chemical Engineering Faculty Publications
The preparation of nanoAg@montmorillonite composite materials and their catalytic activity is reported in this article. The nanoAg@montmorillonite composite materials were prepared by the adsorption of silver NPs, with an average size about 30 nm, from their aqueous dispersion onto two types of montmorillonite with different chemical composition. Silver NPs were prepared via modified Tollens process, which involves the reduction of [Ag(NH 3)2]+complex cation by maltose. The amount of silver NPs anchored onto the MMT surfaces was determined by UV-VIS spectroscopy; the decrease in absorbance of the dispersion after the adsorption was monitored. Prepared nanocomposite materials were subsequently characterized by means …

Transformative Engagement In Deliberative Democracies: Exploring A Framework For Engagement Using A Creative, Braided Approach, Janell C. Walther
Department of Communication Studies: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Policymakers, scientists, academics, and organizational leaders have long been interested in the best way to engage, persuade, and educate stakeholders, no matter the topic (e.g., Mazer, 2013; Bell et al, 2013). While exploration of information dissemination and presentation is growing (Jones, 2013; Gutkind, 2005), particularly within highly mediatized networked societies (Castells, 2008), the necessity for engaging, persuading, and educating citizens in the public sphere through diverse approaches is increasingly obvious. In particular, it is important and relevant to creatively engage stakeholders and decision-makers in an interactive dialogue to allow for fuller understanding about complex topics, especially in the realm of …

We study differential graded algebras (DGAs) whose homology is an exterior algebra over a commutative ring R on a generator of degree n, and also certain types of differential modules over these DGAs. We obtain a complete classification with R = Z or R = Fp and n ≥ –1. The examples are unexpectedly interesting.
Scalar Differential Equation For Slowly-Varying Thickness-Shear Modes In At-Cut Quartz Resonators With Surface Impedance For Acoustic Wave Sensor Application, Huijing He, Jiashi Yang, John A. Kosinski
Scalar Differential Equation For Slowly-Varying Thickness-Shear Modes In At-Cut Quartz Resonators With Surface Impedance For Acoustic Wave Sensor Application, Huijing He, Jiashi Yang, John A. Kosinski
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications
For time-harmonic motions, we generalize a 2-D scalar differential equation derived previously by Tiersten for slowly-varying thickness-shear vibrations of AT-cut quartz resonators. The purpose of the generalization is to include the effects of surface acoustic impedance from, e.g., mass layers or fluids for sensor applications. In addition to the variation of fields along the plate thickness, which is considered in the usual 1-D acoustic wave sensor models, the equation obtained also describes in-plane variations of the fields, and therefore can be used to study the vibrations of finite plate sensors with edge effects. The equation is compared with the theory …
Auroral Ion Upflows: Sources, High Altitude Dynamics, And Neutral Wind Effects, Meghan R. Burleigh
Auroral Ion Upflows: Sources, High Altitude Dynamics, And Neutral Wind Effects, Meghan R. Burleigh
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
Large upwellings of thermal plasma are commonly observed in the high-latitude, topside ionosphere. These auroral ion upflows have a range of potential sources including frictional heating, electron precipitation, neutral winds, and higher-altitude density cavities. The unique signatures and detailed evolution of these upflows are examined through the use of Incoherent Scatter Radar data and a sophisticated ionospheric fluid model.
A survey of solar cycle 23 shows that at Sondrestrom upflows occur most often in the cusp region and midnight auroral zone. Simplified force balance analysis and steady state velocity calculations are applied to a few select events to elucidate the …

We explore and critically reflect on the process of science and engineering research assistant skill development both within laboratory-based research teams and, when no team is present, whithin the faculty supervisor-research assistant interactions. Using a performance-based measure of research skill development, we identify research assistants who, over the course of an academic year of service as a researcher, markedly developed, modestly developed, or failed to develop their research skills. Interviews with these research assistants and their faculty supervisors, seen through the lens of cognitive apprenticeship, provide insight into this variation. We found that within the contours of supervisory relationships and …

E-Commerce Regulation: Necessity, Futility, Disconnect, Eliza Mik
Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law
Existing e-commerce regulations constitute a premature and unnecessary interference in the natural evolution of commercial practices and technologies. I question not just their quality, mainly attributable to the technological ignorance of the regulator, but their very necessity. I observe the practical futility of drafting effective regulatory instruments in areas subject to continuous and unpredictable technological change. I criticize the overly homogenous approach to "everything Internet" (i.e. everything involving the Internet requires new law) as well as the creation of new regulatory spheres and legal categories. Some might claim that it is too early for a critical retrospective of this subject. …
