Synthesis And Investigations Of Type I And Ii Clathrates Of Group 14, Michael Blosser Jan 2013

Synthesis And Investigations Of Type I And Ii Clathrates Of Group 14, Michael Blosser

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Clathrates are a class of new materials that have an open-framework structure that allows guest atoms or molecules to be enclosed inside of their polyhedral framework. Varying the number, weight, and size of the guest species in a particular framework allows one to alter the physical properties of the clathrate. This relationship enables one to further the fundamental understanding of the physics and chemistry of the clathrate structure and use this knowledge to "tune" certain properties. This "tunability" of inorganic clathrates is of great interest as it allows one to optimize their physical properties; making them promising candidates for a …

Magnetism In Complex Oxides Probed By Magnetocaloric Effect And Transverse Susceptibility, Nicholas Steven Bingham Jan 2013

Magnetism In Complex Oxides Probed By Magnetocaloric Effect And Transverse Susceptibility, Nicholas Steven Bingham

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Magnetic oxides exhibit rich complexity in their fundamental physical properties determined by the intricate interplay between structural, electronic and magnetic degrees of freedom. The common themes that are often present in these systems are the phase coexistence, strong magnetostructural coupling, and possible spin frustration induced by lattice geometry. While a complete understanding of the ground state magnetic properties and cooperative phenomena in this class of compounds is key to manipulating their functionality for applications, it remains among the most challenging problems facing condensed-matter physics today. To address these outstanding issues, it is essential to employ experimental methods that allow for …

Effect Of Cement Chemistry And Properties On Activation Energy, Andre J. Bien-Aime Jan 2013

Effect Of Cement Chemistry And Properties On Activation Energy, Andre J. Bien-Aime

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this work is to examine the effect of cement chemistry and physical properties on activation energy. Research efforts indicated that time dependent concrete properties such as strength, heat evolution, and thermal cracking are predictable through the concept of activation energy. Equivalent age concept, which uses the activation energy is key to such predictions. Furthermore, research has shown that Portland cement concrete properties are affected by particles size distribution, Blaine fineness, mineralogy and chemical composition. In this study, four Portland cements were used to evaluate different methods of activation energy determination based on strength and heat of hydration …

Nietzsche And Heidegger On The Cartesian Atomism Of Thought, Steven Burgess Jan 2013

Nietzsche And Heidegger On The Cartesian Atomism Of Thought, Steven Burgess

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

My dissertation has two main parts. In the first half, I draw out an underlying presupposition of Descartes' philosophy: what I term "atomism of thought." Descartes employs a radical procedure of doubt in order to show that the first principle of his philosophy, the cogito, is an unshakeable foundation of knowledge. In the dialogue that follows his dissemination of the Meditations, Descartes reveals that a whole set of concepts and rational principles innate in our minds are never doubted. These fundamental units of thought are indivisible, distinct, and isolated, and enable the possibility of any rational demonstration. Atoms of …

A Study On Lane-Change Recognition Using Support Vector Machine, Weiping Deng Jan 2013

A Study On Lane-Change Recognition Using Support Vector Machine, Weiping Deng

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This research focuses primary on recognition of lane-change behaviors using support vector machines (SVMs). Previous research and statistical results show that the vast majority of motor vehicle accidents are caused by driver behavior and errors. Therefore, the interpretation and evaluation of driver behavior is important for road safety analysis and improvement. The main limit to understanding driver behavior is the data availability. In particular, a full-scale lane-change data set is difficult to collect in a real traffic environment because of the safety and cost issues. Considering the data demands of the recognition model development and the obstacles of field data …

A Study Of Permutation Polynomials Over Finite Fields, Neranga Fernando

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Let p be a prime and q = pk. The polynomial gn,q isin Fp[x] defined by the functional equation Sigmaa isin Fq (x+a)n = gn,q(xq- x) gives rise to many permutation polynomials over finite fields. We are interested in triples (n,e;q) for which gn,q is a permutation polynomial of Fqe. In Chapters 2, 3, and 4 of this dissertation, we present many new families of permutation polynomials in the form of gn,q. The permutation behavior of gn,q is becoming increasingly more …

The Effects Of Temporal Preparation On Reaction Time, Glen Robert Forester Jan 2013

The Effects Of Temporal Preparation On Reaction Time, Glen Robert Forester

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

When responding to external stimuli, preparation reduces Reaction Time (RT). One form of preparation known as temporal preparation results from advance knowledge about when a stimulus will appear. We used Event Related Potentials to investigate how increasing temporal preparation decreases RT during a speeded, choice RT task by manipulating temporal preparation within subjects. In order to determine which cognitive processes are speeded, the latencies of the Lateralized Readiness Potential (LRP) and P300 were examined across two levels of temporal preparation. In line with previous research the stimulus locked LRP, but not the response locked LRP, was speeded when temporal preparation …

Challenges And Rewards Of Single Crystal Flux Growth: Physical Properties Of Structurally Related Ln-Ru-Al Intermetallics, Gregory Morrison Jan 2013

Challenges And Rewards Of Single Crystal Flux Growth: Physical Properties Of Structurally Related Ln-Ru-Al Intermetallics, Gregory Morrison

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The availability of single crystals is vital for understanding the intrinsic properties of crystalline materials. The flux growth method is a versatile technique which may be used to grow single crystals. However, their synthesis can often be challenging, especially when a competing phase is very robust. Herein, we study the growth competition between structurally related compounds in the Ln-Ru-Al phase space. We demonstrate the benefits of single crystals and suggest methods to grow competing phases. CeRu2Al10 has garnered interest due to its higher ordering temperate than expected from de Gennes scaling and its metal-to-insulator transition at the same temperature. Here, …

A Revised View Of The Judicial Hunch, Linda L. Berger Jan 2013

A Revised View Of The Judicial Hunch, Linda L. Berger

Scholarly Works

Judicial intuition is misunderstood. Labeled as cognitive bias, it is held responsible for stereotypes of character and credibility. Framed as mental shortcut, it is blamed for overconfident and mistaken predictions. Depicted as flashes of insight, it takes credit for unearned wisdom. The true value of judicial intuition falls somewhere in between. When judges are making judgments about people (he looks trustworthy) or the future (she will be the better parent), the critics are correct: intuition based on past experience may close minds. Once a judge recognizes a familiar pattern in a few details, she may fail to see the whole …

The United States maintains a reputation as a vibrant, participatory democracy. Yet, paradoxically, formal civics education has essentially disappeared from America's public high schools, particularly urban public schools serving low-income and minority students. The Marshall-Brennan Constitutional Literacy Project, which is offered at almost zero cost to public schools and districts, developed as a response to the need for civics education in high schools and as a way to train future lawyers in public speaking, leadership, and counseling. To support the growth of the Marshall-Brennan project all over the country, the authors of this Essay came together to study the Marshall-Brennan …

Interpreting Individual Classifications Of Hierarchical Networks, Will Landecker, Michael David Thomure, Luis M.A. Bettencourt, Melanie Mitchell, Garrett T. Kenyon, Steven P. Brumby Jan 2013

Interpreting Individual Classifications Of Hierarchical Networks, Will Landecker, Michael David Thomure, Luis M.A. Bettencourt, Melanie Mitchell, Garrett T. Kenyon, Steven P. Brumby

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Hierarchical networks are known to achieve high classification accuracy on difficult machine-learning tasks. For many applications, a clear explanation of why the data was classified a certain way is just as important as the classification itself. However, the complexity of hierarchical networks makes them ill-suited for existing explanation methods. We propose a new method, contribution propagation, that gives per-instance explanations of a trained network's classifications. We give theoretical foundations for the proposed method, and evaluate its correctness empirically. Finally, we use the resulting explanations to reveal unexpected behavior of networks that achieve high accuracy on visual object-recognition tasks using well-known …
