A Neuro-Genetic Model In Gdp Forecasting: Case Study Albania, Dezdemona Gjylapi, Vladimir Kasemi

UBT International Conference

The aim of this paper is to design a neural network model trained with genetic algorithms, called 'neuro-genetic' model, and to use it in Gross Domestic Product (GDP) forecasting. GDP is an economic indicator that represents the value at market prices of all goods and services produced within a country in a given period (usually a year). Its forecasting is of particular importance for the fiscal and monetary policy makers in the preparation of timetables aiming macroeconomic stability and su stainable economic growth. We use ten factors that affect the determination of the GDP for the Albania’s GDP forecasting. The …

The Influence Of Digital Culture In Tectonics And The Language Of Form In Architecture Toyo Ito, Greg Lynn, Patrick Schoumaker, Denada Veizaj, Gjergii Islami

UBT International Conference

The last three decades show how is evolved a complicated relation between architecture and digital technologies, through an absolute skepticism to moments of enthusiasm. The new rhetoric of digital technologies tents to embrace fundamental concepts of architecture, by theorizing another time as in the modern tradition, correlations between form-space-structure. The objective of this paper is to verify the hypothesis which admits that digital culture is changing the relations between space-form and tectonics. In the ambiguous contemporaneity, on the symbioses between spirit and the digital, Toyo Ito’s outcome seems to be the one of the most convincing. This paper tents to …

Comparison Of Local Image Descriptors For Plant Identification From Leaf Images, Lameski Petre, Zdravevski Eftim, Kulakov Andrea

UBT International Conference

In this paper we present several descriptors used for the task of Plant recognition based on the images of leaves. The set of descriptors include texture based descriptors, fractal descriptors as well as some of the state of the art descriptors for image retrieval and object recognition in images. The descriptors are generated from the leaf images taken from single leaves on homogenous background. The descriptors are then used for training classifiers from a dataset of leaf images. The comparison of the obtained results will be presented in this paper.

Swarm Intelligence As An Optimization Technique, Alma Bregaj Nov 2013

Swarm Intelligence As An Optimization Technique, Alma Bregaj

UBT International Conference

Optimization techniques inspired by swarm intelligence have become increasingly popular during the last years. Swarm intelligence is based on nature-inspired behaviours and is successfully applied to optimisation problems in a variety of fields. The advantage of these approaches over traditional techniques is their robustness and flexibility. These properties make swarm intelligence a successful design paradigm for algorithms that deal with increasingly complex problems. In this paper I am focused on the comparison between different swarm-based optimisation algorithms and I have presented some examples of real practical applications of these algorithms.

Broadening What We Perceive: A Method For Analyzing Gesture And Language, Caro C. Williams-Pierce Nov 2013

Broadening What We Perceive: A Method For Analyzing Gesture And Language, Caro C. Williams-Pierce

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Scholarship

Gesture and language are deeply intertwined, and attending to both simultaneously when examining mathematical processes is a complex yet rewarding task. We share our budding research methodology for analyzing gesture and language and discuss the methodology from a generic perspective that can be easily adapted to different contexts, participants, and mathematical domains. We further share our problem-specific gesture coding scheme as an example of the grain size and foci of such schemes. Finally, we close by discussing the importance of gesture and language to understanding mathematical justifications and proofs.

Strategically Chosen Examples Leading To Proof Insight: A Case Study Of A Mathematician’S Proving Process., Caro C. Williams-Pierce

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Scholarship

Examples play a critical role in the exploration and proving of conjectures. Although proof has been studied extensively, the precise ways in which examples might facilitate successful proofs are not well documented or understood. Working within a larger set of studies that argue for the value of examples in proof-related activity, in this paper we present a case study of one mathematician’s work on a conjecture in which his strategic, intentional use of examples led to a proof of that conjecture. By examining his work in detail, we highlight specific mechanisms by which the mathematician’s examples led to successful proof …

Getting It Right The First Time: Robot Mission Guarantees In The Presence Of Uncertainty, Damian Lyons, Ron Arkin, Paramesh Nirmal, Shu Jiang, Tsung-Ming Liu, Julia Deeb

Faculty Publications

Abstract—Certain robot missions need to perform predictably in a physical environment that may only be poorly characterized in advance. We have previously developed an approach to establishing performance guarantees for behavior-based controllers in a process-algebra framework. We extend that work here to include random variables, and we show how our prior results can be used to generate a Dynamic Bayesian Network for the coupled system of program and environment model. Verification is reduced to a filtering problem for this network. Finally, we present validation results that demonstrate the effectiveness of the verification of a multiple waypoint robot mission using this …

One-Day Treatment Of Small Molecule 8-Bromo-Cyclic Amp Analogue Induces Cell-Based Vegf Production For In Vitro Angiogenesis And Osteoblastic Differentiation, Kevin W.-H. Lo, Ho Man Kan, Keith A. Gagnon, Cato T. Laurencin

UCHC Articles - Research

Small molecule based regenerative engineering is emerging as a promising strategy for regenerating bone tissue. Small molecule cAMP analogues have been proposed as novel biofactors for bone repair and regeneration, and while promising, the effect that these small molecules have on angiogenesis, a critical requirement for successful bone regeneration, is still unclear. Our previous research demonstrated that the small molecule cAMP analogue 8-bromoadenosine-3’,5’-cyclic monophosphate (8-Br-cAMP) was able to promote initial osteoblast adhesion on a polymeric scaffold via cAMP signaling cascades. Here, we report that 8-Br-cAMP is capable of inducing in vitro cell-based VEGF production for angiogenesis promotion. We first demonstrated …

We present an X-ray spectral and temporal analysis of the variable active galaxy NGC 6814, observed with Suzaku during 2011 November. Remarkably, the X-ray spectrum shows no evidence for the soft excess commonly observed amongst other active galaxies, despite its relatively low level of obscuration, and is dominated across the whole Suzaku bandpass by the intrinsic powerlaw-like continuum. Despite this, we clearly detect the presence of a low-frequency hard lag of ~1600 s between the 0.5-2.0 and 2.0-5.0 keV energy bands at greater than 6σ significance, similar to those reported in the literature for a variety of other active galactic …

Joint Estimation Of Multiple Graphical Models From High Dimensional Time Series, Huitong Qiu, Fang Han, Han Liu, Brian Caffo Nov 2013

Joint Estimation Of Multiple Graphical Models From High Dimensional Time Series, Huitong Qiu, Fang Han, Han Liu, Brian Caffo

Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers

In this manuscript the problem of jointly estimating multiple graphical models in high dimensions is considered. It is assumed that the data are collected from n subjects, each of which consists of m non-independent observations. The graphical models of subjects vary, but are assumed to change smoothly corresponding to a measure of the closeness between subjects. A kernel based method for jointly estimating all graphical models is proposed. Theoretically, under a double asymptotic framework, where both (m,n) and the dimension d can increase, the explicit rate of convergence in parameter estimation is provided, thus characterizing the strength one can borrow …

Co Oxidation Over Au/Tio2 Catalyst: Pretreatment Effects, Catalyst Deactivation, And Carbonates Production, Johnny Saavedra, Camilah Powell, Basu Panthi, Christopher J. Pursell, Bert D. Chandler Nov 2013

Co Oxidation Over Au/Tio2 Catalyst: Pretreatment Effects, Catalyst Deactivation, And Carbonates Production, Johnny Saavedra, Camilah Powell, Basu Panthi, Christopher J. Pursell, Bert D. Chandler

Chemistry Faculty Research

A commercially available Au/TiO2 catalyst was subjected to a variety of thermal treatments in order to understand how variations in catalyst pretreatment procedures might affect CO oxidation catalysis. Catalytic activity was found to be inversely correlated to the temperature of the pretreatment. Infrared spectroscopy of adsorbed CO experiments, followed by a Temkin analysis of the data, indicated that the thermal treatments caused essentially no changes to the electronics of the Au particles; this, and a series of catalysis control experiments, and previous transmission electron microscopy (TEM) studies ruled out particle growth as a contributing factor to the activity loss. …

Delay Behavior Of On-Off Scheduling: Extending Idle Periods, Allen Roginsky, Ken Christensen, Mehrgan Mostowfi

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

On-off scheduling of systems that have the ability to sleep can be used to extend system idle periods and enable greater opportunities for energy savings from sleeping. In this paper, we achieve a theoretical understanding of the delay behavior of on-off scheduling as it may apply to communications links and other systems capable of sleeping. We consider a single-server coalescing queue with a scheduler that schedules on-off periods for the server in order to extend idle periods of the downstream link. At the start of an off period (duration To f f ) the server stops serving jobs immediately if …
