Mathematical Modelling Of Internal Heat Recovery In Flash Tank Heat Exchanger Cascades, Andrei Korobeinikov, John E. Mccarthy, Emma Mooney, Krum Semkov, James Varghese Jan 2013

Mathematical Modelling Of Internal Heat Recovery In Flash Tank Heat Exchanger Cascades, Andrei Korobeinikov, John E. Mccarthy, Emma Mooney, Krum Semkov, James Varghese

Mathematics Faculty Research

Flash tank evaporation combined with a condensing heat exchanger can be used when heat exchange is required between two streams and where at least one of these streams is difficult to handle (tends severely to scale, foul, causing blockages). To increase the efficiency of heat exchange, a cascade of these units in series can be used. Heat transfer relationships in such a cascade are very complex due to their interconnectivity, thus the impact of any changes proposed is difficult to predict. Moreover, the distribution of loads and driving forces in different stages and the number of designed stages faces tradeoffs …

Building A Taxonomy Of Litigation: Clusters Of Causes Of Action In Federal Complaints, Christina L. Boyd, David A. Hoffman, Zoran Obradovic, Kosta Ristovski

Scholarship@WashULaw

This project empirically explores civil litigation from its inception by examining the content of civil complaints. We utilize spectral cluster analysis on a newly compiled federal district court dataset of causes of action in complaints to illustrate the relationship of legal claims to one another, the broader composition of lawsuits in trial courts, and the breadth of pleading in individual complaints. Our results shed light not only on the networks of legal theories in civil litigation but also on how lawsuits are classified and the strategies that plaintiffs and their attorneys employ when commencing litigation. This approach permits us to …

Visual Analysis Of E-Textbooks For Senior High School In Indonesia, Ouda Ena Jan 2013

Visual Analysis Of E-Textbooks For Senior High School In Indonesia, Ouda Ena

Dissertations

The purpose of the study was to evaluate the visual images used as illustrations in the English electronic textbooks for grades ten, eleven, and twelve in Indonesia. Qualitative visual content analysis was employed as the methodology of the research. The analysis focused on whether these e-textbooks accommodated the religious, gender, ethnic, and socioeconomic diversity of the students. These four aspects of cultural diversity that influenced students learning in Indonesian contexts were crucial to examine because the students were so diverse as results of the geographical conditions and historical background of Indonesia. Eight English e-textbooks were examined. First, the result showed …

Where Is Equal Protection? Applying Strict Scrutiny To Use Of Race By Law Enforcement, Evan Gerstmann Jan 2013

Where Is Equal Protection? Applying Strict Scrutiny To Use Of Race By Law Enforcement, Evan Gerstmann

Political Science and International Relations Faculty Works

This article seeks to move the debate over the use of race by law enforcement beyond the current focus on racial profiling, arguing that the courts must apply strict scrutiny to all use of race by law enforcement, including the stopping and questioning of persons based on suspect descriptions that include race. The current debate implicitly (and sometimes explicitly) assumes that law enforcement’s use of race can be divided into unconstitutional racial profiling and all other uses of races, which are presumptively legitimate. However, when other institutions rely upon race, such as public universities implementing affirmative action programs, courts automatically …

Counting Links And Knots In Complete Graphs, Loren Abrams, Blake Mellor, Lowell Trott Jan 2013

Counting Links And Knots In Complete Graphs, Loren Abrams, Blake Mellor, Lowell Trott

Mathematics, Statistics and Data Science Faculty Works

We investigate the minimal number of links and knots in embeddings of complete partite graphs in S3. We provide exact values or bounds on the minimal number of links for all complete partite graphs with all but 4 vertices in one partition, or with 9 vertices in total. In particular, we find that the minimal number of links in an embedding of K4,4,1 is 74. We also provide exact values or bounds on the minimal number of knots for all complete partite graphs with 8 vertices.

Congruence Classes Of 2-Adic Valuations Of Stirling Numbers Of The Second Kind, Curtis Bennett, Edward Mosteig Jan 2013

Congruence Classes Of 2-Adic Valuations Of Stirling Numbers Of The Second Kind, Curtis Bennett, Edward Mosteig

Mathematics, Statistics and Data Science Faculty Works

We analyze congruence classes of S(n,k), the Stirling numbers of the second kind, modulo powers of 2. This analysis provides insight into a conjecture posed by Amdeberhan, Manna and Moll, which those authors established for k at most 5. We provide a framework that can be used to justify the conjecture by computational means, which we then complete for values of k between 5 and 20.

Conformal Gravity And The Alcubierre Warp Drive Metric, Gabriele U. Varieschi, Zily Burstein Jan 2013

Conformal Gravity And The Alcubierre Warp Drive Metric, Gabriele U. Varieschi, Zily Burstein

Physics Faculty Works

We present an analysis of the classic Alcubierre metric based on conformal gravity, rather than standard general relativity. The main characteristics of the resulting warp drive remain the same as in the original study by Alcubierre, that is, effective superluminal motion is a viable outcome of the metric. We show that for particular choices of the shaping function, the Alcubierre metric in the context of conformal gravity does not violate the weak energy condition, as was the case of the original solution. In particular, the resulting warp drive does not require the use of exotic matter. Therefore, if conformal gravity …

Self-Completeness And The Generalized Uncertainty Principle, Maximiliano Isi, Jonas Mureika, Piero Nicolini Jan 2013

Self-Completeness And The Generalized Uncertainty Principle, Maximiliano Isi, Jonas Mureika, Piero Nicolini

Physics Faculty Works

The generalized uncertainty principle discloses a self-complete characteristic of gravity, namely the possibility of masking any curvature singularity behind an event horizon as a result of matter compression at the Planck scale. In this paper we extend the above reasoning in order to overcome some current limitations to the framework, including the absence of a consistent metric describing such Planck-scale black holes. We implement a minimum-size black hole in terms of the extremal configuration of a neutral non-rotating metric, which we derived by mimicking the effects of the generalized uncertainty principle via a short scale modified version of Einstein gravity. …

In California, almost 40% of European American adults hold a BA degree, as do 23% of African Americans and 48% of Asians. However, only 11% of adult Latinas/os hold a BA degree or higher. Given that the majority of the school age population in the state is now Latina/o, this undereducation is not just an urgent problem, but foreshadows economic disaster for California.

The Writing Of Students With Asperger's Syndrome, Christine Zrimsek Jan 2013

The Writing Of Students With Asperger's Syndrome, Christine Zrimsek

Master's Theses and Capstones

The writing of 5 adolescent boys with Asperger's syndrome between the ages of 13 - 18 was examined relative to age and gender-matched typically-developing children. The investigator collected writing samples across three genres: narrative, expository, and persuasive. The samples were analyzed both quantitatively and qualitatively using a variety of measures. Consistent with the investigator's expectations, results indicated that, relative to controls, students with Asperger's syndrome performed significantly poorer on higher-order aspects of writing: coherence, cohesion, and perspective-taking while not significantly different on spelling, a lower-order aspect. An unpredicted finding was that the children with Asperger's syndrome made significantly more grammatical …

Yeast Eif4b Binds To The Head Of The 40s Ribosomal Subunit And Promotes Mrna Recruitment Through Its N-Terminal And Internal Repeat Domains, Sarah F. Mitchell Jan 2013

Yeast Eif4b Binds To The Head Of The 40s Ribosomal Subunit And Promotes Mrna Recruitment Through Its N-Terminal And Internal Repeat Domains, Sarah F. Mitchell

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Works

Eukaryotic translation initiation factor (eIF)4B stimulates recruitment of mRNA to the 43S ribosomal pre-initiation complex (PIC). Yeast eIF4B (yeIF4B), shown previously to bind single-stranded (ss) RNA, consists of an N-terminal domain (NTD), predicted to be unstructured in solution; an RNA-recognition motif (RRM); an unusual domain comprised of seven imperfect repeats of 26 amino acids; and a C-terminal domain. Although the mechanism of yeIF4B action has remained obscure, most models have suggested central roles for its RRM and ssRNA-binding activity. We have dissected the functions of yeIF4B's domains and show that the RRM and its ssRNA-binding activity are dispensable in vitro …

Hiv-1 Frameshift Efficiency Is Primarily Determined By The Stability Of Base Pairs Positioned At The Mrna Entrance Channel Of The Ribosome, Kathryn Mouzakis Jan 2013

Hiv-1 Frameshift Efficiency Is Primarily Determined By The Stability Of Base Pairs Positioned At The Mrna Entrance Channel Of The Ribosome, Kathryn Mouzakis

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Works

The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) requires a programmed -1 ribosomal frameshift for Pol gene expression. The HIV frameshift site consists of a heptanucleotide slippery sequence (UUUUUUA) followed by a spacer region and a downstream RNA stem-loop structure. Here we investigate the role of the RNA structure in promoting the -1 frameshift. The stem-loop was systematically altered to decouple the contributions of local and overall thermodynamic stability towards frameshift efficiency. No correlation between overall stability and frameshift efficiency is observed. In contrast, there is a strong correlation between frameshift efficiency and the local thermodynamic stability of the first 3-4 bp in …

Twisted Alexander Polynomials Of 2-Bridge Knots, Jim Hoste, Patrick D. Shanahan Jan 2013

Twisted Alexander Polynomials Of 2-Bridge Knots, Jim Hoste, Patrick D. Shanahan

Mathematics, Statistics and Data Science Faculty Works

We investigate the twisted Alexander polynomial of a 2-bridge knot associated to a Fox coloring. For several families of 2-bridge knots, including but not limited to, torus knots and genus-one knots, we derive formulae for these twisted Alexander polynomials. We use these formulae to confirm a conjecture of Hirasawa and Murasugi for these knots.

Torsion In One-Term Distributive Homology, Alissa S. Crans, Józef H. Przytycki, Krzysztof K. Putyra Jan 2013

Torsion In One-Term Distributive Homology, Alissa S. Crans, Józef H. Przytycki, Krzysztof K. Putyra

Mathematics, Statistics and Data Science Faculty Works

The one-term distributive homology was introduced by J.H.Przytycki as an atomic replacement of rack and quandle homology, which was first introduced and developed by R.Fenn, C.Rourke and B.Sanderson, and J.S.Carter, S.Kamada and M.Saito. This homology was initially suspected to be torsion-free, but we show in this paper that the one-term homology of a finite spindle can have torsion. We carefully analyze spindles of block decomposition of type (n,1) and introduce various techniques to compute their homology precisely. In addition, we show that any finite group can appear as the torsion subgroup of the first homology of some finite spindle. Finally, …

Cohomology Of Frobenius Algebras And The Yang-Baxter Equation, J. Scott Carter, Alissa S. Crans, Mohamed Elhamdadi, Enver Karadayi, Masahico Saito Jan 2013

Cohomology Of Frobenius Algebras And The Yang-Baxter Equation, J. Scott Carter, Alissa S. Crans, Mohamed Elhamdadi, Enver Karadayi, Masahico Saito

Mathematics, Statistics and Data Science Faculty Works

A cohomology theory for multiplications and comultiplications of Frobenius algebras is developed in low dimensions in analogy with Hochschild cohomology of bialgebras based on deformation theory. Concrete computations are provided for key examples. Skein theoretic constructions give rise to solutions to the Yang-Baxter equation using multiplications and comultiplications of Frobenius algebras, and 2-cocycles are used to obtain deformations of R-matrices thus obtained.

A Method Based On Total Variation For Network Modularity Optimization Using The Mbo Scheme, Huiyi Hu, Thomas Laurent, Mason A. Porter, Andrea L. Bertozzi Jan 2013

A Method Based On Total Variation For Network Modularity Optimization Using The Mbo Scheme, Huiyi Hu, Thomas Laurent, Mason A. Porter, Andrea L. Bertozzi

Mathematics, Statistics and Data Science Faculty Works

The study of network structure is pervasive in sociology, biology, computer science, and many other disciplines. One of the most important areas of network science is the algorithmic detection of cohesive groups of nodes called “communities.” One popular approach to finding communities is to maximize a quality function known as modularity to achieve some sort of optimal clustering of nodes. In this paper, we interpret the modularity function from a novel perspective: we reformulate modularity optimization as a minimization problem of an energy functional that consists of a total variation term and an $\ell_2$ balance term. By employing numerical techniques …

Automated Detection Of Vehicles With Machine Learning, Michael N. Johnstone, Andrew Woodward Jan 2013

Automated Detection Of Vehicles With Machine Learning, Michael N. Johnstone, Andrew Woodward

Australian Information Security Management Conference

Considering the significant volume of data generated by sensor systems and network hardware which is required to be analysed and intepreted by security analysts, the potential for human error is significant. This error can lead to consequent harm for some systems in the event of an adverse event not being detected. In this paper we compare two machine learning algorithms that can assist in supporting the security function effectively and present results that can be used to select the best algorithm for a specific domain. It is suggested that a naive Bayesian classiifer (NBC) and an artificial neural network (ANN) …

A Z-Based Formal Framework And Comprehensive Toolkit For The Extraction And Analysis Of Object-Oriented Design State Space And Structural Metrics, Raouf Alomainy Jan 2013

A Z-Based Formal Framework And Comprehensive Toolkit For The Extraction And Analysis Of Object-Oriented Design State Space And Structural Metrics, Raouf Alomainy

Dissertations

The syntax-based (structural) software metrics are quantitative measures of programs. They have been used to predict various software quality factors. There are many studies on software structural metrics over the years. However, these metrics lack a formal foundation that explains the nature of measurement. The objective of this research is to propose a Z-based theoretical framework for the extraction of object-oriented (OO) design state space and structural metrics to help guide and improve the design and development of software systems using mathematically rigorous methods. To show the framework works, we selected several representative categories of syntax-based metrics that measure different …

A Quantitative Model Of Relative Ethical Violation For Use In Military Decision-Making, Gregory S. Reed Jan 2013

A Quantitative Model Of Relative Ethical Violation For Use In Military Decision-Making, Gregory S. Reed

Dissertations

As the embodiment of rational cause-and-effect, game and decision theory methods dominated the second half of the 20th century and continue to flourish today. Machine ethics, a very nascent field, involves developing machines (either as tangible hardware or as mathematical or logical models) with ethics codified as principles and procedures, in turn allowing them to consider ethical "cause-and-effect" of potential actions. A model known as the Metric of Evil (the "Metric") was first conceived by a branch of the United States Army, primarily intended for use by the Army itself. The Metric was inspired by a perceived gap in military …

Numerical Modeling Of Multi-Component Spray Evaporation Process, Omid Samimi Abianeh Jan 2013

Numerical Modeling Of Multi-Component Spray Evaporation Process, Omid Samimi Abianeh

Dissertations

The overarching goal of this study is to develop a mathematical methodology for finding a fuel surrogate mixture composition and implementing computationally effective models that can predict the evaporation of multi-component fuel droplets/spray using a multidimensional Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) code. A new concept for modeling fuel surrogate is initially developed. Following this, a multi-component fuel droplets/spray coalescence model that builds on previously developed models is derived. Finally, a multi component fuel evaporation model is developed. All the sub-models are implemented for the first time in a multidimensional CFD code, and results are shown to be in good overall agreement …
