Brust-Schiffrin Synthesis Of Catalytic Bipodal Pdpt Nanoparticles With Some Mechanistic Insights, Sangbum Han, Vara P. Sheela, Wei Cao, Balasubramanian Ramjee Jan 2013

Brust-Schiffrin Synthesis Of Catalytic Bipodal Pdpt Nanoparticles With Some Mechanistic Insights, Sangbum Han, Vara P. Sheela, Wei Cao, Balasubramanian Ramjee

Applied Research Center Publications

Brust–Schiffrin reduction of Pd and Pt precursors in the presence of resorcinarene amine surfactant led to the formation of substantially Pt rich, PdPt bimetallic nanoparticles of a V-shape or variants on the V-shape. New insights into this reaction are provided on the basis of reversed Brust–Schiffrin syntheses, DLS, UV-vis, and NMR analysis. Based on our experiments we conclude that the resorcinarene amine surfactant is part of the inverse micelle formed from TOABr and it also selectively complexes with the Pd salts prior to their reduction. Remarkably, the composition of the bipodal nanoparticles could be varied substantially by varying the reaction …

Group Developed Weighing Matrices, K. T. Arasu, Jeffrey R. Hollon Jan 2013

Group Developed Weighing Matrices, K. T. Arasu, Jeffrey R. Hollon

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

A weighing matrix is a square matrix whose entries are 1, 0 or −1, such that the matrix times its transpose is some integer multiple of the identity matrix. We examine the case where these matrices are said to be devel- oped by an abelian group. Through a combination of extending previous results and by giving explicit constructions we will answer the question of existence for 318 such matrices of order and weight both below 100. At the end, we are left with 98 open cases out of a possible 1,022. Further, some of the new results provide insight into …

Fault-Tolerant Flow-Line Design: An Example From An Automotive Body Shop, Christopher Müller Jan 2013

Fault-Tolerant Flow-Line Design: An Example From An Automotive Body Shop, Christopher Müller

Open Access Master's Theses

Automotive companies employing highly automated assembly lines in their body shops struggle with the challenge of robots’ failures which result either in stoppages of the line or in manual backup of operations. These phenomena tend to impair the systems’ productivity as well as the products’ quality. Therefore, the consideration of robot failures in the design stage of an assembly line considerably gains in importance. In this thesis we develop an approach to configure a robotic assembly line such that it is more robust against robots’ failures. The principle idea is that in the event of a robot failure, working robots …

Multiple Brine Production And Storage Facility Location Problem For Snow Removal, Moritz Behrend Jan 2013

Multiple Brine Production And Storage Facility Location Problem For Snow Removal, Moritz Behrend

Open Access Master's Theses

In a departure from past practice, snow plow operations are now executed in a two phase approach: a preparation phase where brine is sprayed on roads, and a snow removal phase. In order to augment existing snow removal operations by the first phase, investments in new facilities such as silos for brine storage, and equipment such as brine spreaders are required. To maximize the impact of these investments, decisions such as the optimal location of silos and the selection of appropriate equipment must be carefully considered. This thesis addresses the facility location problem only.

The benefit of investing in facilities …

Laser-Assisted Heating Of A Plasmonic Nanofluid In A Microchannel, Timothy Walsh Jan 2013

Laser-Assisted Heating Of A Plasmonic Nanofluid In A Microchannel, Timothy Walsh

Open Access Master's Theses

The work presented in this study analyses the theoretical modeling and experimentation of laser-assisted heating of plasmonic nanofluids (PNFs) in a microchannel for accurate, efficient, and ultra-fast heating of a microdroplet. Suspended plasmonic nanoparticles exhibit strong light absorption and scattering upon the excitation of localized surface plasmons (LSPs), resulting in intense and rapid photothermal heating. Several multiple stepped computational models were utilized to theoretically characterize and verify the laser-assisted heating behavior of gold nanoshells (GNS) and gold nanorod (GNR) plasmonic nanofluid droplets in a microchannel. From the experimental investigation, a full range of controllable steady-state temperatures, room temperature to 100°C, …

The Ultrasonic Pulse-Echo Immersion Technique And Attenuation Coefficient Of Particulate Composites, Miguel Angel Goni Rodrigo Jan 2013

The Ultrasonic Pulse-Echo Immersion Technique And Attenuation Coefficient Of Particulate Composites, Miguel Angel Goni Rodrigo

Open Access Master's Theses

This thesis comprises two main sections, namely a critical evaluation of the use of the Ultrasonic pulse echo immersion technique to measure attenuation and an application of the same to particulate composites. The former consisted of testing the main assumptions adopted by the different approaches developed to carry out the attenuation coefficient measurement. The first assumption states that a perfectly bonded interface between water and specimen exists. A second assumption requires consistent reflection coefficients every time the specimen is immersed. Finally, some existing methods assume equal reflection coefficients on either side of any specimen during a particular immersion. Herein, it …

Testing Theory-Based Quantitative Predictions With New Behaviors, Leslie Ann Daline Brick Jan 2013

Testing Theory-Based Quantitative Predictions With New Behaviors, Leslie Ann Daline Brick

Open Access Master's Theses

Theory development is essential for the generation and support of research ideas. Traditional Null Hypothesis Significance Testing (NHST) has been the modus operandi for testing research questions across many branches of science since the early 20th century. The focus of a statistical test under the NHST framework considers the rejection or acceptance of a null hypothesis based on a conditional probability of the data given that the null hypothesis is true (i.e. a p-value). This approach provides no direct support for a specific theory, which often takes the form of an alternative hypothesis. Furthermore, rejection of a null hypothesis …

Wave Profile For Current Bearing Antiforce Waves, H. Morris, W. Childs, P. Pinkston, M. Hemmati, J. Christensen Jan 2013

Wave Profile For Current Bearing Antiforce Waves, H. Morris, W. Childs, P. Pinkston, M. Hemmati, J. Christensen

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

For fluid dynamical analysis of breakdown waves, we employ a one-dimensional, three-component (electrons, ions and neutral particles) fluid model to describe a steady-state, ionizing wave propagating counter to strong electric fields. The electron gas temperature and therefore the electron fluid pressure is assumed to be large enough to sustain the wave motion down the discharge tube. Such waves are referred to as antiforce waves. The complete set of equations describing such waves consists of the equations of conservation of mass, momentum and energy coupled with Poisson’s equation. Inclusion of current behind the wave front alters the set of electron fluid …

Relationship Between Land-Use And Water Quality In Spring-Fed Streams Of The Ozark National Forest, A. Smartt, S. Ganguly, M. A. Evans-White, B. E. Haggard

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Spring-fed streams are abundant in karst topographic regions such as the Ozarks, providing an important and valuable water resource. Many of these spring-fed streams presently receive agriculture runoff, but few studies have examined the impacts of this runoff on water quality. We examined water quality in Ozark spring-fed streams surrounded by either agricultural (N=3) or primarily forested land (N=3) in the riparian zone. We hypothesized that agricultural sites would have greater dissolved nutrient concentrations and conductivity than forested sites and that water quality would fluctuate with distance from the spring source. Conductivity (p

Morphometric Analysis Of Dinosaur Tracks From Southwest Arkansas, R. Shell, Stephen K. Boss Jan 2013

Morphometric Analysis Of Dinosaur Tracks From Southwest Arkansas, R. Shell, Stephen K. Boss

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Dinosaur trackways were discovered in Cretaceous De Queen Limestone strata in Howard County, Arkansas, in June 2011. Multiple trackways with variably sized tridactyl tracks were exposed in a commercial quarry, suggesting multiple theropod species or adult and juvenile tracks of a single species. Results of morphometric analyses of 32 plaster casts from selected trackways are reported in an effort to identify the specific track-making dinosaurs and differentiate large and small tracks. Track measurements included length and width of each track, the lengths and widths of each digit impression, and the angular spread (divarication) between digit impressions. Twenty-nine plaster casts were …

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Although vertebrates are a commonly studied group of animals, the distribution and natural history of many species within Arkansas is still not well understood or documented. However, recently several new distribution and natural history notes have been published in a continuing series regarding Arkansas’s vertebrates (e.g. Tumlison and Robison 2010; Connior et al. 2011, Connior et al. 2012). Thus, we continue to augment current literature with new records of distribution and provide notes on the natural history of selected vertebrates from Arkansas. All voucher specimens (physical or photographic) are deposited in the vertebrate collections at either Arkansas State University (ASUMZ), …

Accuracy Assessment Of The 2006 National Land Cover Database Percent Impervious Dataset, D. E. Long Ii, J. D. Carr, Hal O. Liechty, Chris Stuhlinger

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

An impervious surface is any surface that prevents water from infiltrating the ground. As impervious surface area increases within watersheds, stream networks and water quality are negatively impacted. The Multi-Resolution Land Characteristic Consortium developed a percent impervious dataset using Landsat imagery as part of the 2006 National Land Cover Database. This percent impervious dataset estimates imperviousness for each 30-meter cell in the land cover database. The percent impervious dataset permits study of impervious surfaces, can be used to identify impacted or critical areas, and allows for development of impact mitigation plans; however, the accuracy of this dataset is unknown. To …

Biomaterial-Induced Osteogenesis Of Mesenchymal Stem Cells By Surface Roughness And Functionalization, Pongkwan Sitasuwan Jan 2013

Biomaterial-Induced Osteogenesis Of Mesenchymal Stem Cells By Surface Roughness And Functionalization, Pongkwan Sitasuwan

Theses and Dissertations

For tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, it is important to understand factors directing the stem cell fate, including self-renewal, proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis. Bone marrow derived mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) have the potential to differentiate into osteoblasts, chondrocytes, adipocytes, and smooth muscle cells. Specifically, in the field of bone tissue engineering, BMSCs are commonly used for in vitro osteogenesis studies. However the mechanisms and signaling pathways that these cells recognize material surface and utilize to differentiate are still unclear. This dissertation focuses on investigating the effect of surface nanotopography and functionalization on the promotion of osteogenic differentiation of BMSCs. Surface …

Correlation Between Literacy Rates In Africa And Latin America And Economic Stability, Shawn Jordan Jan 2013

Correlation Between Literacy Rates In Africa And Latin America And Economic Stability, Shawn Jordan

Geography and the Environment: Graduate Student Capstones

Literacy rates in Africa and Latin America are on different ends of the spectrum. Africa is home to some of the poorest countries in the world and Latin America is not too far behind. Literacy rates generally correlate to wealth as a country. The plights of Africa and Latin America are a no different. In general, Africa has some of the lowest literacy rates in the world and has been the place for horrific fighting for decades. This epidemic has hit the women and children especially hard. Women in Africa have an illiteracy rate of 50% (allafrica.com 2010). This is …

Governing Common-Properties Of Low-Cost Flats In Selangor: Issues And Challenges, Hong Kok Wang Jan 2013

Governing Common-Properties Of Low-Cost Flats In Selangor: Issues And Challenges, Hong Kok Wang

Student Works (2010-2019)

Hardin’s (1968) seminal paper “The tragedy of the commons” has generated so much attention on common-pool resource (CPR) management and whose findings are still valid today shows the inadequacy of human nature in dealing with collective action, and the unique nature of “public goods” that few policy makers appreciate. In Malaysia, the social phenomenon where many common-areas of strata buildings are badly managed by developers/ property management companies/ parcel holders under the existing institutional arrangements of self-governance, lends credence to Hardin’s (1968) allegory. The research explored the contributing factors that make self-governance such a challenge where the maintenance of the …

Models Of Integrated Inventory System With Stock-Dependent Demand / Hafizah Zulkipli, Hafizah Zulkipli

Student Works (2010-2019)

This study is proposing two integrated inventory models by considering stockdependent demand. We presented a mathematical model where a vendor procures raw material in single/multiple instalment(s), processes them to make finished products, ships to single/multiple buyer(s) at single/multiple shipment(s) and stores them at the warehouse before presents at the display area with single/ multiple transfer(s). The first model operates with a single-vendor and a single-buyer by considering different shipment policies. Two types of shipment policies were considered in the first model: geometric shipment and geometricthen-equal shipment sizes. The optimum joint profits were obtained by using Wolfram Mathematica Version 7. Numerical …

Some Properties Associated With Certain Subclasses Of Univalent And Multivalent Functions / Wan Sabhi Salmi Bt Wan Hassan, Wan Sabhi Salmi Wan Hassan

Student Works (2010-2019)

This thesis investigates properties of certain analytic functions; in particular, functions which are univalent and multivalent in the unit disc U = {z 2 C : |z| < 1}. Let A denote the class of all normalised analytic functions of the form f(z) = z + X1 n=2 anzn. Interest is focused at several subclasses of A. Functions belonging to these subclasses are defined via some differential operator; namely the S˘al˘agean and Al- Oboudi operator. These classes formed are subclasses of S, the class of univalent functions. Let f 2 Bn() for > 0 and n = 0, 1, 2, . . . be defined by Re Dnf(z) z > . where Dn denote the S˘al˘agean operator. For functions f 2 Bn(), we obtain estimates for the second, third and fourth coefficients of the inverse functions. Further, we investigate similar coefficient problems for functions in the B n(), an extension of the above class defined via the Al-Oboudi operator. In addition, these are then applied to obtain …
